Industrial Project IV Presentation – Mr MC Mphego22-June-2016
• Design low cost smart home automation solution
• No sophisticated installations and home infrastructure excessive modifications using wireless communication.
• The designed system is Raspberry Pi based and also consists of an Arduino mainly for ADC and GPIO
expansion, various sensors to detect temperature & humidity, presence, smoke, light intensity detectors.
• The major concern in this case is affordability, usability and security
• The system offers multiple control and monitoring interfaces such as the use of mobile devices and/or
computers considering that they are connected to the same network as the home.
Introduction
Industrial Project IV Presentation – Mr MC Mphego22-June-2016
Background of Project
• The smart home automation is a wireless system that is supposed to be implemented in existing home
environments, without major changes in the existing infrastructure.
• The system lets the user control and monitor his/her home from his/her any smart device/computer that is
connected to their local network with an option to control their home from any where in the world.

Problem statement
• Today people are looking at ways and means to better their life-style using the latest technologies and any
new facility or hope appliance that promises to enhance their life-style is grabbed by the consumers.
• Wall switches are located in different parts of a house and thus requires manual operations like to switch on or
off these switches to control various appliances.
• The solution to this to making one’s life a lot easier is by means of automating household equipment/devices
e.g. Washing Machine by A.J Fisher 1908.[1]

Solutions to Real World Industrial Problem
Industrial Project IV Presentation – Mr MC Mphego22-June-2016
• A smart home automation system was designed and developed using Raspberry Pi and Arduino that controls
electrical devices and also monitors the environment at home from a remote location by an android smart phone
and/or computer.

Results/Outcome of Project
• The conceptual design for the smart home automation system was well-received, and the user was very
impressed with the effort and results of the design.
• After completing the engineering prototype, assemble and viewing the results, it is obvious to see that the
simulation of the home automation system achieves the desired goals.
• It shows the acting status of a smart home, which covers the areas of ease, comfort and flexibility.

Conclusion
• It is evident from this project work that an individual control home automation system can be cheaply made
from low-cost locally available components and can be used to control miscellaneous home appliances ranging
from the security lightings, television control, air conditioning system, security surveillance and even the entire
house lighting system.
• This system can be also implemented over Wi-Fi or LAN connectivity without much change to the design and
yet still be able to control a variety of home appliances. Hence, this system is scalable and flexible
• The advantage of our product is that there are no known competitors, as it has its own unique features.
Secondly, our project allows for greater development of products
• With our software, we could develop it for more complicated applications such as sophisticated home
surveillance and security with geolocation and monitoring, pet tracker or kid’s tracker
