Hazardous Substance: Definition
A 'hazardous substance' is any substance (biological,
chemical, radiological, and/or physical), that has the
potential to cause harm to humans, animals, or the
environment, either by itself or through interaction with
other factors.
Hazardous Substance: Categories
Flammable – Octane Corrosive – Acid (HCl), Base(NaOH, NH3) Toxic - Hydrogen peroxide (>35%), Methyl Chloride Reactive – Organic peroxide, Perchloric acid Biological (infectious) – Oily/waste water Carcinogen (cancer-causing) - synthetic chemicals Radioactive-Americium(smoke detector), gamma ray Explosive – Urea nitrate, Ammonium chlorate,

• Keep containers closed when not in use
• Keep away from ignition sources
• Avoid contact with incompatible materials
• Only transfer to approved containers

• Clean up spills and dispose of waste properly
• Use proper ventilations when used in closed area

First Aid: Eyes Exposure
Don’t rub the eyes
Hold eyelids open and flush with water for 15 minutes
Be careful not to contaminate the other eye
Seek additional medical attention
First Aid: Skin Exposure
Remove the chemical causing the burn
Remove contaminated clothing and jewelry from
burn area
Wash the affected area copiously with a gentle flow
of water for at least 15 min.

Induce vomiting only if told to do so by Poison Control
Get immediate medical attention
