Today’s first reading describes a heroic military adventure. The hero is a handsome and clever young guerrilla leader who will one day reign as Israel’s most outstand-ing king. He is David, the shepherd, who was picked by King Saul as his royal musician and companion. After David killed the giant Goliath, he became so popular among Saul’s forces that the king grew envious. He tried to murder David and David fled into the desert, where he joined a band of guerrilla fighters. In today’s episode of the story, David and Abishai find King Saul asleep. Although Abishai wants to assassinate Saul, David will not allow him to harm the Lord’s appointed ruler. He simply takes Saul’s spear to let the king know that he could have destroyed him. By sparing his enemy, David shows that he will one day be a worthy leader of God’s people. / 1 Samuel 26: 2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-13Have you ever wondered what your body will look like after you have risen from the dead? The Christians at Corinth were curious about that question and they looked to Paul for an answer. Although he could not give them an exact description, he did give them an example based on the story of Adam in the Book of Genesis. He says that their spiritual bodies will be as different from their natural bodies as Adam’s body was from that of the Risen Christ. And he promises that faithful Christians will one day “bear the likeness” of the Son of God. / 1 Corinthians 15: 45-49In today’s Gospel, Jesus says those “three little words” that make being a Christian a true challenge: “Love your enemies.” The followers of Jesus must do more than be kind to their friends. Even sinners can do that much! Jesus challenges us to real-ize our potential as sons and daughters of God. We have the power to turn the other cheek, to lend without expecting repayment, to give generously to those who take advantage of us. Jesus does not pretend that it is easy to love our enemies. But he requires us to keep trying, to keep growing into fully mature Christians who can change the world by the power of love. / Luke 6: 27-38
