Hasta 1903, el exhibidor compraba las películas al productor, pero ese año
el sistema convencional de distribución va a cambiar. Ahora el productor no vende las
películas, se las alquila al distribuidor. Esto supone la aparición de los distribuidores como
intermediarios. Este sistema de cambio de la venta al alquiler en la distribución comienza
a cuajar en 1905, año en que aparecen las primeras salas de cine. La primera apareció
en Pittsburg en 1905, se llamaban “Nickelodeon”, porque costaban 1 níquel (una moneda
de 5 centavos). El nombre odeón todavía se mantiene a veces.
Los Nickelodeon eran pequeñas salas de cine de menos de cien butacas,
pero que ofrecían sólo obras cinematográficas. Las sesiones se repetían durante todo el
día de 8 de la mañana a las 12 de la noche. Y esas sesiones de unos 20 min. se
acompañaban de pianistas que ponían emoción a las escenas.
Tuvieron un gran éxito, y un rápido desarrollo. Para 1910, existían ya
10.000 salas de éstas características. Las salas se ubicaban en los suburbios, porque
entonces estaba considerado como un mero entretenimiento, y estaba dirigido a
personas de clase trabajadora o inmigrantes (de poca cultura, que no entendía el teatro)
El cine no pedía ningún tipo de conocimiento (ni idioma) al espectador, y además era
barato.
