Instrumentos de Viento Metal Stomvi, por Philip Biggs

Coincidiendo con el Festival Internacional de Trombón en Valencia, la invitación y la oportunidad de visitar la sede corporativa y de fabricación de instrumentos de viento Stomvi era demasiado buena para perdérselo. Así

que decidí salir un día antes para hacer una visita a esta empresa de renombre mundial - Stomvi. Tomé el vuelo temprano por la mañana desde

Stansted, llegué al aeropuerto de Valencia sano y salvo - y la temperatura al aterrizar a las 9.30 ya estaba alrededor de los 30 grados.

Mientras esperaba que llegaran mis maletas, ¿a quién vi? Pues nada menos que a

Andrea Tofanelli. "¿Qué estás haciendo en Valencia, Andrea?", le pregunté.

"Pensaba que todo lo que vería esta semana sería trombonistas." Andrea me

explicó que no solamente estaba en marcha un festival de trombón esos días, sino

que junto con Rex Richardson, Jordi Albert y José Cháfer eran profesores del CIMVO

2015, un festival de trompeta y un curso que tenía lugar a unos 50 kilómetros de

Valencia. Nos abrazamos, nos deseamos lo mejor unos a otros, esperando ya la

próxima ocasión en la que nos volveremos a ver.

El panorama del metal español es vibrante, como mínimo. El país tiene una rica

historia de bandas militares y de concierto; solamente en la zona de Valencia hay

literalmente cientos; en el país en su conjunto hay miles. España es rica en

instrumentos de metal.

Después de haber recogido las maletas y llegar al hotel era el momento de llamar a

Anna Trullàs, responsable de Comunicación y de Coordinación del Staff en Stomvi.

Habían pasado muchos años desde la última vez vi a Anna, cuando era la Mánager

de Spanish Brass y se encargaba de la administración del grupo de manera muy

eficiente. Anna me llevó los aproximadamente diez kilómetros que separan el

centro de Valencia del barrio de Xirivella, donde está la sede de Stomvi.

Fui recibido por Vicent Honorato, director e hijo de Vicent padre, que fundó la

compañía en 1984. Estoy acostumbrado a coincidir con Vicent en la Musikmesse de

Frankfurt donde expone los famosos instrumentos Stomvi, así que verlo en su

propia casa fue un gran placer. Es principalmente un negocio familiar, que no sólo

cuenta con el padre y el hijo, sino también con la madre Mari y su hija Ángela,

jugando papeles muy importantes dentro de la empresa. Stomvi emplea a 34

personas en toda la empresa y produce alrededor de 2.000 instrumentos por año.

El Presidente, Vicente padre, cuando contaba sólo con 28 años, creó su propia

empresa dedicada a la fabricación de joyería fina. A los 30 comenzó su nuevo

proyecto: la fabricación de instrumentos de metal. Fue inspirado por muchos

profesionales que creyeron en sus ideas creativas. Vicente aplica todos sus

conocimientos de la joyería a la fabricación artesanal de sus instrumentos Stomvi.

Una historia similar ocurrió en los siglos XVI y XVII en Nuremberg, donde los

talleres de instrumentos musicales eran desarrollados por los joyeros y artesanos

de la época. Los que conocen a Vicente dicen que tiene un oído musical talentoso y

una gran sensibilidad para percibir y apreciar la mejor afinación. Tiene una

envidiable reputación dentro de la industria de fabricación de metal de ser un

maestro artesano y un maestro en la fabricación de instrumentos - He oído

describirlo como el último perfeccionista.

Vicent y Anna me acompañaron en un recorrido por la fábrica. El énfasis está

totalmente puesto en la calidad en todo lo que hacen en Stomvi y, como la mayoría

de empresas de prestigio, Stomvi fabrica todas las partes del instrumento en sus

instalaciones. La maquinaria estaba funcionando a toda marcha - tapones de los

pistones, boquillas, sordinas - y eso fue antes de que llegáramos a la zona de

producción de instrumentos de metal! Stomvi es bien conocido por sus pistones

maravillosos, así que estaba muy interesado cuando Vicent me llevó a la zona

donde se producen. Ahí me encontré con un equipo de ingenieros altamente

cualificados y con experiencia. "Aquí en el montaje de los pistones, la consistencia

lo es todo", explica Vicent, "y tenemos un equipo de expertos con mucha

experiencia. Somos muy afortunados de contar con un personal maravilloso y muy

bien formado."

Pasamos a la zona de fabricación de los instrumentos. STOMVI fabrica muchos

modelos, incluyendo la famosa gama Titán. Vi a hombres y mujeres artesanos

trabajando con habilidades exigentes y meticulosas. Vicent insistió en resaltar la

experiencia del equipo de fabricación Stomvi: "Estamos orgullosos de nuestro

equipo. Tenemos realmente un gran equipo aquí en Stomvi, hemos crecido y

madurado juntos. No somos autocomplacientes, pero estamos muy tranquilos,

incluso de nuestro recorrido hasta ahora en el negocio del instrumento de metal a

nivel mundial".

Hay muchos intérpretes fabulosos que tocan instrumentos Stomvi, sin ir más lejos

Dede Decker (trombón solista de la Sinfónica de Tenerife y una artista que aparece

en la edición de mayo de The Brass Herald) y también su colega Inés González,

también de la Sinfónica de Tenerife (trompa solista). Ciertamente, la gama Stomvi

Titán se está haciendo muy conocida en el Reino Unido, sobretodo con la corneta

soprano, la corneta en Sib y el fliscorno, utilizados por los mejores intérpretes de

las mejores bandas. Recuerdo bien un viaje muy memorable con Don Owen

(Stomvi Reino Unido) en Alemania en abril de este año, junto con nuestro amigo

común, Marcus Reynolds. Después de clasificar el tono de llamada de un

determinado teléfono, Don era muy optimista sobre el éxito entre los músicos

británicos de metal de la marca Stomvi en cuanto a la excelencia en la fabricación y

diseño.

La amplitud de la gama en el catálogo Stomvi es más que impresionante por decir

lo mínimo: para trompeta, cornetas y fliscorno están las gamas Zenith, Forte,

Clásica, Elite, Mahler y Mambo, así como los modelos S1, S2 y S3. Luego, por

supuesto la serie Titán, muy aclamada. Las trompas cuentan con tres instrumentos

de alta gama y los trombones tienen cinco modelos diferentes.

Recorriendo la fábrica con Vicent, realmente descubrí algo respecto a Stomvi - es

calidad, calidad, calidad. El compromiso con la calidad es más que evidente - y por

lo que parece esto es un planteamiento en todos los sentidos.

Era hora de acabar la visita y Anna me llevó de vuelta al centro de la ciudad de

Valencia. Era temprano por la tarde y la temperatura ahora se había disparado -

tiempo de tomar un refresco en un bar cerca de mi hotel. Mientras estaba sentado

en la terraza viendo el mundo pasar, a quién veo venir por la calle? Nada menos

que a Dede Decker, con su trombón Stomvi, por supuesto - es pequeño el mundo.

Charlamos sobre muchas cosas, del trombón y, por supuesto, de Stomvi!

Los instrumentos de metal producidos por Stomvi son muy impresionantes, al igual

que los artistas que tocan Stomvi. Y puedo decir con toda seguridad que las

técnicas de producción empleadas para hacer estos buenos instrumentos para el

mercado del metal en todo el mundo son igualmente impresionantes. Bravo

Stomvi!

Stomvi Brass Instruments, by Philip Biggs The Brass Herald October 2015 Coinciding with the International Trombone Festival in Valencia, the invitation and opportunity to visit the corporate and manufacturing

headquarters of Stomvi Brass Instruments was just too good not to be missed. So I decided to set off a day early to take in a visit to the world

renowned company - Stomvi. Taking the early morning flight from Stansted, I arrived at Valencia Airport safe and sound - and the temperature on the ground at 9.30am was already 30C.

Waiting for my bags to come through, who should I see but none other than Andrea

Toffanelli. “What are you doing in Valencia, Andrea?” I asked. “I thought all I would

see this week was trombone players.” Andrea explained that there was not just a

trombone festival going on, but he along with Rex Richardson, Jordi Albert and Jose

Chafer were professors at CIMVO 2015, a trumpet festival and workshop (lucky

delegates) which was taking place about 50 kilometres from Valencia. We

embraced, wished each other well and looked forward to the next time we shared

each other’s company.

The Spanish brass scene is vibrant, to say the least. The country has a rich history

of military and concert bands; in the Valencia area alone there are literally

hundreds; in the country as a whole there are tens of thousands. Spain is rich in

brass.

Having collected my bags it was off to the hotel and to call Anna Trullàs,

Communications and Artists Manager at Stomvi. It had been many years since I

last saw Anna, when she was the Administrator of Spanish Brass and running the

administration of the group most efficiently. Anna drove me the ten kilometres or

so from the centre of Valencia to the suburb of Xirivella where Stomvi are based.

I was greeted by Vicent Honorato, Director and son of Vicent senior, who founded

of the Company back in 1984. I am used to meeting Vicent at the Musikmesse in

Frankfurt where he exhibits the famous Stomvi instruments, so to see him on his

home patch was a great pleasure. It’s quite a family business, with not just father

and son, but also mother Mari and daughter Angela playing major rolls within the

company. Stomvi employ 34 people throughout the company and produce around

2000 instruments per year.

President, Vicent senior, when aged only 28, created his own company devoted to

fine jewellery manufacture. At 30 he began his new project: brass instrument

manufacturing. He was inspired by many professionals who believed in his creative

ideas. Vicent applied all his jewellery knowledge to the handcrafted manufacture of

his Stomvi instruments. A similar story occurred in the XVI and XVII centuries in

Nuremberg, where the musical instrument workshops developed from the jewellers

and craftsmen of the time. Those that know Vicent senior say that he has a gifted

musical ear and a great sensibility to perceive and appreciate the finest tuning. He

has an enviable reputation within the brass manufacturing industry as being a

master craftsman and master instrument maker - I have heard him described as

the ultimate perfectionist.

Vicent and Anna took me on a tour of the factory. The emphasis is on total quality

in everything they do at Stomvi and, like most prestige companies, Stomvi make all

parts inhouse. The machinery was running at full tilt - valve caps, mouthpieces,

practise mutes - and that was before we hit the production of brass instruments!

Stomvi are well known for their wonderful valves, so I was greatly interested when

Vicent took me to the area where they are produced. Here I met a team of highly

skilled and experienced engineers. “Here in valve assembly consistency is

everything,” Vicent explained, “and here we have a team of experts with so much

experience. We are very well blessed here at Stomvi with wonderful, knowledgeable

staff.”

We then moved on to brass instrument manufacturing. Stomvi manufacture many

leading models, including the famous Titan range. I watched the skilled craftsman

and woman working with exacting and painstaking skills. Vicent was quick to point

out to me the experience of the Stomvi manufacturing team: “We’re proud of our

team. We are actually one big team here at Stomvi, we have grown and grown up

together. We are never complacent, but we are very quiet, even understated about

our journey so far in the worldwide brass instrument business.”

There are many fabulous players who play Stomvi instruments, not least Dede

Decker (principal trombone of the Tenerife Symphony and a featured artist in the

May issue of The Brass Herald) and also her colleague Ines Gonzales, also of the

Tenerife Symphony (principal horn) Certainly the Stomvi Titan range is making

itself well known in the UK, with the soprano cornet, Bb cornet and flugel horn now

being played by top players in top bands. I remember well a very memorable

journey with Don Owen (Stomvi UK) in Germany in April of this year together with

our mutual friend, Marcus Reynolds. After sorting out the ringtone of a certain

phone, Don was very upbeat about the success amongst British brass players of the

Stomvi brand regarding the manufacturing and design excellence.

The breadth of range in the Stomvi catalogue is most impressive to say the least:

for trumpet, cornets and flugel there are the Zenith, Forte, Classica, Elite, Mahler

and Mambo Series as well as the S1, S2 and S3 models. Then of course the highly

acclaimed Titan series. Horns boast three top rated Titan instruments, with

trombones boasting five different models of Titan.

Walking the ‘line’ with Vicent junior, I really did get it regarding Stomvi - it’s

quality, quality, quality. The commitment to quality is so apparent - and this seems

to me to be both a top down and bottom up approach.

It was time for the day shift to ‘clock off’ and Anna drove me back to Valencia city

centre. It was early afternoon and the temperature was now soaring - time for a

cool drink in a bar near my hotel. As I sat out on the pavement watching the world

go by, who should who come across the road? None other than Dede Decker, with

Stomvi trombone of course - it’s small world. We chatted about all things trombone

and, of course, Stomvi!

The brass instruments produced by Stomvi are very impressive indeed, as are the

artists that play Stomvi. And I can say most certainly the production techniques

employed to make these fine instruments for the worldwide brass market are

equally impressive. Bravo Stomvi!
