verlos.

IT’S ALL ABOUT CONTROL

From toddlerhood to old age, we grow in

mastery of our own lives, our bodies, and our

destiny. This mastery is hard won, and we don’t

let go of autonomy easily. Much of this self-

mastery involves the avoidance of pain or

discomfort, so when we hear things like “take up

your cross” and “lose your life,” we tend to resist

the message.

James says that faith without works is dead.

Ouch! That is really a direct message! One way

to look at this, as well as the part about losing

our life to find it, is that faith is a process of more

and more openness to God’s direction of our

lives. It is very hard for us to give up control, but

perhaps what we are being asked to do is not to

become passive and babyish, but to allow God to

direct where our self-mastery will lead and what

it will accomplish. We are asked to

relinquish the need to control the

results of our efforts; to risk, as Jesus

did, the loss of everything we are

working to achieve. We are asked to let

God take the lead and to control the

results, even though we may never see

those results.

News from the Padre/ Noticias de Nuestro Sacerdote

Perhaps you remember the scene in The Sound of Music when a troubled Maria decides to return to her abbey after

realizing she was in love with the father of the children to whom she was a governess. In her meeting with the Mother

Superior, Maria says, “When God closes a door, somewhere God opens a window.”

It is a variation of a famous proverb, from the inventor of the telephone, Alexander Graham Bell; “When one door

closes, another door opens.” Bell was no stranger to failures. Like any inventor, engineer, or scientist knows, failure is an

accepted and expected part of their discovery process. Sometimes when God closes a door, it simply breaks our heart!

Brokenness is something we encounter all too often. We are continually faced with: why this illness, why this death,

why this divorce, why this job loss, why this unexpected tragedy, why me?

In times of doubt, fear, loneliness, depression; times when hearts are troubled; this simple, non-biblical quote inspires

us to lean on our faith when we don’t quite understand why things aren’t going our way. It is good to remind ourselves to be

optimistic; even better, it is best when people are around us to heal broken hearts by opening them.

God has a multitude of doors waiting for us. So, at our annual outdoor 11:00 a.m. Mass next week, we will recognize

and thank our parish volunteers who so generously have opened doors of opportunity and have walked with those desirous

of growing in their faith. Over 50% of our parishioners are involved in one ministry or another. Regardless of their ministry,

our volunteers are Christ’s healing presence to those they minister to. These unsung heroes open the pathway to God by

sacrificing themselves. They are the concrete and tangible hands and hearts of Christ.

We have been blessed by God and enriched by all who have volunteered their time and talent in small and large ways

for the benefit of the many, and for the advancement of Gospel Values. There is no insignificant ministry, from councils and

committees to ushers, greeters, choirs, and lectors, from altar servers and Eucharist Ministers to teachers and advocates of

social justice, from Marriage coordinators to Baptismal instructors, and from money-counters and hospitality ministers, to

ministers of the sick, and those who serve the poorest of the poor; our parish honors and

gives thanks to all for being cheerful givers and faithful ministers. We acknowledge you with

gratefulness for opening doors and windows of opportunity to help us all grow in faith and be

a loving parish community.

comunidad parroquial y amorosa.
