SLOW STARTS HAUNT THE BOYS TEAM

LADY O’S—BACK ON A ROLL

The Springville girls basketball team dropped a tough loss last week on Rivalry Saturday, but they’ve rebounded nicely and are back to doing what they do, press, pass and score. On Friday they visited East Buchanan and weren’t very nice guests, they trounced the Bucs 65-21. “ We came out very aggressively in the first quarter” said Coach Sanderson (heck, I think they got off the bus in press formation). Coach continued and said the girls “forced a number of turnovers that led to a quick lead (18-0 in the first 3:20 of the game). We extended that lead to 31-6 at the end of the first quarter. We shot a blistering 14-22 (63%) and forced 10 turnovers in the opening frame. From that point we gradually extended the lead for the rest of the evening, including holding East Buchanan scoreless in the third quarter”. Friday’s win propelled them to Tuesday when the girls faced another match up with highly touted Maquoketa Valley (11-2). The Wildcats have played pretty flawless (losing only one other game) since the teams first meeting when the O’s handed them their first loss of the season in early December. The two squads are pretty evenly matched, Maquoketa Valley might even have a little size advantage and in the first half the two teams were caught up in a defensive battle. The O’s held the Wildcats scoreless in the second quarter to take a 11-5 lead into the break. The second half was a see saw battle between the two teams but as Sanderson explains, “we were more patient on offense and got a couple buckets in transition to stretch the lead to double-digits”. Springville earned a 36-28 win to move to 12-1 on the season. The Lady O’s will travel to Bellevue Marquette this Friday before returning home on Saturday to play hostess to the Midland Eagles. It may be cold outside but the girls keep Machovec nice and toasty. Come on out and feel it for yourself.

Tuesday’s game was Springville’s Sister Act as the O’s were led in rebounds by Senior Megan Wagaman (below left) and in points by Sophomore Madi Wagaman (below right).
