Wednesday, January 6, 2016 Oriole Pride 2 ORIOLE BOYS KEEP PUSHING THE BALL

The Springville boys team has dropped three in a row but their style of play continues to improve. They aren’t afraid of a fast break and they love to press off a made basket. When their shots are falling they are a lot of fun to watch, but... their shots have to fall. Before the holiday break the boys closed out 2015 with a couple of tough home games that brought cold shooting percentages. Alburnett man-handled the boys on December 18th and ran away with a 58-32 win that saw the O’s shooting a frigid 25%. On the 22nd Calamus-Wheatland paid a visit and they were perhaps the best shooting team the boys have seen this season. Springville shot slightly better (35%) but it wasn’t enough as the Trojans jumped out to a 24-10 first quarter lead and didn’t look back, beating the O’s 67-49. That loss moved the Orioles to an even 4-4 record. On Tuesday of this week, the boys returned to season action and had a tough road test right away at Lisbon. Traditionally they play the Lions pretty tough and Tuesday was no different. A tight second quarter helped Lisbon pull away a bit and take a 29-16 lead to the locker room. Springville played pretty even in the second half but couldn’t get a defensive stop and the Lions beat the O’s 58-42 to move the boys to 4-5 overall, 3-2 in conference action. Another battle awaits as Friday, a stellar North Linn squad will enter Machovec with an undefeated record and a state ranking that probably doesn’t do them justice (tied for 10th in 1A). Varsity girls will take the floor at 6:15, we’ll see you there! Pictured right, JP Kane demonstrates a textbook box out on Tuesday

at Lisbon.

GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM KEEPS EATING UP OPPONENTS

This article may cause you to shout out loud, so if you are at work—or you have a napping child—go to a quiet area. The Springville girls basketball team is winning each game by an average of 36 points an outing. They’ve held three teams under 15 total points and are 9-0. As in undefeated, untested and unstoppable. They’re shooting 47% from the field and have three players with scoring averages in double figures. As a team they lead all 1A teams in assists and are 6th in the state among all programs. They make very few mistakes and you’d be hard pressed to find a flaw, oh ok, I guess you could say one flaw is that they’re too humble. In December the girls closed out the year with big wins at home. They first took on and easily managed the Alburnett Pirates, winning 46-28. Next up were the Warriors from Calamus-Wheatland. They beat them 61-28. After a little rest over the holidays, the girls returned to action on Tuesday at Lisbon and were right back to their impressive ways,

coming out with a blow out win, 53-24. The girls play together like no other cohesive group you’ll see. Springville is led by Senior Megan Wagaman who directs their offense and keeps them contained. “Wags” is averaging 11 points and 6 boards a game and also leads her team in the much coveted assist column with 44—5 per game average. Sophomore Rylee Menster is averaging 13 points a game and is the premier defensive player for the team—the conference—and I’d argue the entire state. You wont find her intensity on any other girls team. She leads in steals with 52 which is an average of 5 per game. Watching her frustrate point guards is well worth attending a ball game, trust me. Another Sophomore, Mikayla Nachazel (pictured left at Lisbon) is their presence on the inside. She leads in scoring with 17 a game and is tied with another Sophomore, Alyssa Jaeger for the lead in blocks with 10. Jaeger, a lanky kid who can play inside and outside, leads the girls in caroms with an average of 6 and a half a game. Then consider the rest of the chemists: Sophomore Madi Wagaman who is another defensive specialist with scoring abilities off the break; Senior Chrissy “The Beast” Hoogland who out-muscles everyone and I do mean everyone, in the paint; Syd Williams, a Senior who loves to launch the three along with adding that defensive spark when needed. All these kids provide basketball entertainment galore. Coach Sanderson says, “Our schedule toughens considerably over the weekend as we face arguably the two best teams on our schedule. Friday night we host North Linn (11-1, 5-0) who is fresh off an impressive victory over Maquoketa Valley. The winner of the game will take sole possession of first place in the west division. Saturday, we will play #3 Turkey Valley in the US Cellular Center at Rivalry Saturday”. Sounds like great days ahead Oriole fans, don’t miss a moment of it—see you on Friday in Machovec!

“STEWIE” MOVES ON AS A FIGHTIN’ ENGINEER

Tyler Stewart graduated from Springville in 2014 after a successful high school prep career in football, golf and baseball. Known by most as “Stewie”, Tyler left the Oriole foot-ball program as a Defensive District MVP and All-State player. He went on to college at Rose Hulman Institute of Technology and continues to play Football. While at Springville Tyler played on the offensive line and at linebacker on defense. Coach Martin tells us “Tyler graduated high school around 215 or so and is probably around 250 now. Has really put a lot of muscle

mass as you can imagine but says he has not lost much of his agility and/or speed. He came into Rose Hulman playing LB and has moved down to playing nose tackle. Coaches love his ability to find the ball and cause a problem in the backfield. Now in his second year he has been starting on defense and enjoying the chance to get a lot of playing time”. The Engineers finished 8-2 last season. Tyler is majoring in Chemical Engineering, he’s a Dean’s List student and is the son of Kristin Schrader and Steve Stewart.

Tyler wore # 28 as an Oriole and now wears #98 for the Engineers
