Well, your Lady O’s worked their tails off to earn a trip to the 2015 State volleyball tournament this week. Some could say they coasted through the end of their regular season and into the regional semifinals. But on Wednesday night, facing Bellevue Marquee for the fourth me this year and winners in each of the previous three contests, the O’s were pushed to their limit. Marquee played stellar volleyball, nearly flawless, and the Orioles? They looked a lile out of sorts. The passers weren’t passing, the seers not seng and the hiers were out of sync. Game one was all Bellevue for most the way and they jumped out to an 11-4 lead before Springville regrouped and baled back. Two me-outs and a Coach Howard pep talk prompted the girls to find their rhythm and get their feet under them. The O’s came back to a 19-17 deficit, then 23-19 and a 6-0 finish to give them the win. Sets two and three went to Marquee, 20-25 and 16-25 to set up the pivotal fourth set. Again, the Oriole’s answered. They pounced early and went up on the Mohawks, 14-7 and sailed to a 25-17 win. What remained was the e-breaking set and it was clear to the Oriole fans that momentum had shiſted to their side. You looked at the Oriole’s and you saw nothing but smiles, high fives, fist pumps and support for one another. The girls immediately set the tone and were up 11-5 when Bellevue called a me out. Marquee would make one last run, coming within two at 11-9 and then Coach Howard did his thing. He called a me out and challenged his girls to finish the set and they certainly did, winning it 15-9. What followed was a celebraon unlike no other. Students, families, coaches and players made the Maquoketa gym feel like Machovec. This win, the 31st of the year, earns Springville a return trip to the 2015 state tournament. Their second trip in three years me. They will open up with #4 Sidney (32-1)at 6pm this evening. The games of course are at the US Cellular Center in downtown Cedar Rapids. Rest those vocal chords and unleash them at the game Wednesday—Leg’s Go O’s!!!

VOLLEYBALL SURVIVES, WINS REGION AND ADVANCES TO STATE

If something comes too easy, they say it’s hard to appreciate. Well, your Lady O’s worked their tails off to earn a trip to the 2015 State volleyball tournament this week. Some could say they coasted through the end of their regular season and into the regional semifinals. But on Wednesday night, facing Bellevue Marquette for the fourth time this year and winners in each of the previous three contests, the O’s were pushed to their limit. Marquette played stellar volleyball, nearly flawless, and the Orioles? They looked a little out of sorts. The passers weren’t passing, the setters not setting and the hitters were out of sync. Game one was all Bellevue for most the way and they jumped out to an 11-4 lead before Springville regrouped and battled back. Two time-outs and a Coach Howard pep talk prompted the girls to find their rhythm and get their feet under them. The O’s came back to a 19-17 deficit, then 23-19 and a 6-0 finish to give them the win. Sets two and three went to Marquette, 20-25 and 16-25 to set up the pivotal fourth set. Again, the Oriole’s answered. They pounced early and went up on the Mohawks, 14-7 and sailed to a 25-17 win. What remained was the tie-breaking set and it was clear to the Oriole fans that momentum had shifted to their side. You looked at the Oriole’s and you saw nothing but smiles, high fives, fist pumps and support for one another. The girls immediately set the tone and were up 11-5 when Bellevue called a time out. CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty wild mascots out there and this week we look at Washington, North Carolina. The small town of 9,000 sits on the Pamlico River which alludes to the towns history. Original settlers were the Pamlico’s, a Native American tribe. So the High School competes as the “Pam-Pack”. They field teams in the usual athletic programs and wear the colors of navy blue and black. One notable resident of Washington, North Carolina is an NBA great - the Human Highlight Film, Dominique Wilkins.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… Great College match-ups this weekend—make your picks! Alabama at Mississippi State Memphis at Houston Oklahoma at Baylor Yale at Princeton Make your picks and for the tie-breaker, does Iowa QB CJ Beathard throw for more yards than the Hawks rush for? Or does the team’s offensive rushing yards total more than what Beathard throws for? This week’s winner is Robin Menster, she was 3 for 4 on her picks. Thanks for playing and have a great week.

STATE VOLLEYBALL TRIVIA… Did you know that Assistant Volleyball Coach Tiel Howard played in the 1991 state volleyball tournament? She played for Clarinda High School that year under head coach Denny Stanton (aka...Tiel’s father) —which by the way was the first year the tournament was held in Cedar Rapids!
