WAGAMAN PLAYS IN IGCA ALL STAR VOLLEYBALL GAME

There’s a lot to be said of smaller school districts, I don’t need to list them for you. When our student athletes receive recognition from those rare, outside sources, it is refreshing and yes, flattering. We know what our kids are capable of and we know how hard working and humble they are, but when the rest of the state takes notice, we all feel an elevated sense of pride. Am I right? Senior Oriole, Megan Wagaman spent the weekend in Carroll, Iowa participating in the Iowa Girls Coaches Association annual All-Star volleyball game. 32 girls were selected to fill the squad of four teams, Wagaman was the only 1A player to be selected. The four teams, named after the three Regent institutions and Drake; Hawkeyes, Cyclones, Panthers and the Bulldogs were coached by high school coaches. Megan played for the Bulldogs and was coached by Iowa City West’s Randy Dolson. The Cyclones were coached by a familiar face—Springville’s own, Claude Howard. Megan finishes this season with incredible statistics; 1041 kills, 535 digs, 432 assists and 237 blocks (97 solo). Her team finished their year at the state tournament last week and “Wags” wrapped up her prep career among the elite players of this year in the all-star event Saturday. We congratulate Coach Howard on the prestigious honor of being selected to coach and we congratulate Megan for her selection. Megan is the daughter of Dee and Russ Wagaman.

Wednesday, November 25, 2015 Oriole Pride 2 VOLLEYBALL AND FOOTBALL HONORS START TO ROLL IN...

In Tri-Rivers All-Conference selections, the Orioles had 5 girls receive recognition. Junior setter Olivia Dlouhy received Honorable Mention while second team honors went to Sophomore Alyssa Jaeger and Senior Jordyn Johnson. First team members were Sophomore Mikayla Nachazel and Senior Megan Wagaman. The Orioles won the West division conference, then they won the conference tournament and went on to win the region before venturing off to state competition. Coach Howard, the team leader through it all was named the West division coach of the year. On the gridiron, the Orioles had 8 boys selected for all-district honors. Seniors Max Boland and John Evens were honorable mention selections. Second team defensive nods went to Juniors Austin Kirchman and Nick Stuppi. Junior Seth Blake received first team defensive honors and Sophomore Henry Hoogland was a first teamer on the offensive side. Senior quarterback and co-captain Jacob Loehr was tabbed as a first team honoree for the offensive team and Junior James Fitzgerald, a kicker head and shoulders above any other we’ve seen this year, was also named a first team all-district selection. Coach Martin has just told us that the Iowa Newspaper Association, all-state football announcements have just been released and both Blake and Fitzgerald were named as third team athletes. Congratulations to all the players and their coaches.

LADY ORIOLE BASKETBALL OPENS UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF—ON TOP…

After finishing the 2014 season as state runners up, the O’s start this year as the number one team in 1A polls. Three starters return and while we lost Sarah Matus in uniform, she joins the coaching ranks to lead the girls from a new role. Coach Sanderson and his crew captured a lot of attention in March while in Des Moines and they are certainly going to be watched by many this winter, it should be a great time in Machovec this year. In two scrimmages so far, the girls are looking good with wins over North Cedar and Regina. They open up at home on Tuesday, December 1st when they host Cedar Valley Christian—so get those seat cushions ready, basketball season is here!

BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM LOOKS AGGRESSIVE AND FAST… This season should be an interesting one for Coach Merritt. His team is looking to be quicker than we’ve seen in the past and they aren’t afraid to shoot the ball. The squad finished last year with a 9-13 record and enter this season with new leadership in Senior’s Max Boland, Carter Gillmore and Jacob Loehr. The guys opened up with a two quarter scrimmage against English Valleys High School on Monday night and they beat the Bears 23-10. Not one of the kids in uniform hesitates to launch a three and they push the ball up the floor too, it should be fun to watch them improve as the year goes on. They, like the girls will open up at home next Tuesday, December 1st against Cedar Valley. Let’s Go O’s!

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty crazy mascots out there, here’s your weekly dose of a U.S. high school with an out of the ordinary nick-name. The Chinook Sugarbeeters are located in Chinook, MT, population 1500. The school features colors of orange and black and their football team plays 8 man, they even won their state championship this past weekend. They earned their name from the communities early days when a large sugarbeet factory once operated in their town. The Beeter Booster club sells merchandise including shirts with “You can’t stop the beets” and “Beeter Pride” printed on them, or my favorite—caps that don “Remember Your Roots” .

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… another selection of some pretty important college games:

Ohio State vs Michigan Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State Notre Dame vs Stanford Iowa State vs West Virginia Make your picks and for the tie-breaker, predict the total number of touchdowns Iowa will have against Nebraska. This week’s winner is Cavanaugh Riley, he was 3 for 4 on his picks and repeats as the winner. Thanks for playing and have a great Thanksgiving Holiday!

YOUTH SPORTS OPENS UP BASKETBALL SEASON

Every year I make the comment that this really is “The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year”. Sure the holidays are upon us—but so is basketball season. Not just for the high school teams either. Springville’s Youth Sports teams are busy hitting the travel season as they practice and compete against area teams. These Little O’s will one day be our Springville Orioles so chances are, if you see the parking lot full on a Saturday, these kids are in action. (Photo on the left courtesy of Shauna Fah.
