Today I can grumble about my health, or I can rejoice that I am alive.Today I can whine because I have to go to work, or I can shout for joy because I have ajob to do.Today I can murmur because I have to go to school, or eagerly open my mind andfill itwith rich new bits of knowledge.

Today I can lament over all that my parents didn't give me when I was growing up, or Icanfeel grateful that they allowed me to be born.Today I can cry because roses have thorns, or I can celebrate that thorns have roses.

Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped. And here I am, the sculptor who getsto do the shaping. What today will be like is, with God's help, up to me.

mates saw them off in great honour as was befitting by forming a guard of honour forthe lads final journey.

Canon Noel Mullin was a tower of strength to the families and to the community. The grief in the community is still palpable and what can one say? The lads weregreat mates, had everything to live for.To Niall and Liam's parents, we express our heartfelt sympathy to you and thank youfor their contribution to our community. They will never be forgotten.

    N u a ch t C h la ir , J u n e 2 00 7EDITORIAL

The community of Claregalway is still reeling from the deaths oftwo beloved local lads Niall Greaney and Liam Loughlin who losttheir lives in a tragic road accident recently.

Niall and Liam were two fine young lads with the world at theirfeet - exams over, America looming for the summer and theywere working hard in the Claregalway Hotel to earn money for thetrip. Alas this was not to happen as God had a bigger plan. Wenow have two more angels guarding us from above.

Both Niall and Liam were 19. Niall was due to celebrate his zothbirthday a few days after his death.

Both were sportsmen - hurling and football being their passion. They both wore their club jerseys with great pride. Their team

    May they rest in peace.

UPDATE FROM YOUR LOCALCOUNCILLOR JIM CUDDY, MAY 2007Bus Service and ShelterThese two matters are of ongoing concern to the people of Claregalway for quitesome time and I have written on several occasions to Bus Eireann in this regard.I can tell you that as a result of a conversation I had with the Regional ManagerMr. Brian Connolly in May the situation is as follows:"Bus Eireann have developed plans under Transport 21 for a major overhaul of Galway City andCounty Services including those from Claregalway. These plans include a significant increase inthe frequency of services from Claregalway to operate ever 30minutes. In addition, this routewould operate from Claregalway to Carnmore serving Galway Airport. However, an essentialelement of this plan is the realisation of the Bus priority measures outlined in the Galway strategicBus study published earlier this year. With regard to the Bus shelters, until recently, Bus Eireann did not provide bus shelters but ratherfranchised this function out to advertising agencies who would erect shelters on the basis thatthey could cover their costs from revenue derived from advertising at such locations. However,Bus Eireann has decided to engage in this activity themselves and are currently in the process ofapplying to Galway City Council for planning permission for Bus shelters at 13locations. It is theintention of Bus Eireann to roll out this project throughout the County in the near future.

LoughgeorgeJunctionI have been informed by the local area engineer of Galway County Council that work is to start inthe near future on traffic calming measures at the Loughgeorge junction. This work was due forcommencement last year. This will involve putting in some footpaths which are badly needed.

    Cloonacauneen and Cloonroad junctions-

As a result of several representations with regard to the perceived danger at both these junctions Ihave brought the local area engineer to view them and he is to request that the roads design officetake up the concerns and do what they can to improve safety at these points.

CongratulationsI would like to join with the many congratulations that have been extended to Deputy NoelGrealish on his recent re-election. Itwas so important that this area have its own T.D. who knowsfully the problems that have to be addressed. Itwas very encouraging to read in the local papersthat if Noel enters government that the Claregalway Bypass is his number one priority. That iswhat the people of this area have been asking for voted for.

When a family is given the news that their child has Cancer their world is suddenly turned upsidedown. Apart from the emotional upheaval these families have huge practical adjustments to maketo their lives. The majority of children with Cancer are treated in Our Lady's Hospital for SickChildren in Crumlin, Dublin. The treatment can sometimes last up to two years or more, withongoing tests to monitor the child after treatment.Established in 2006, CD's Helping Hands is a West ofIreland Charity and is based in Galway. Theinspiration for our charity has come from Caitlin Doherty. Caitlin is now four and is almost twoyears into her treatment for Leukemia. She lives in Claregalway with her younger brother Ruairiand her parents Karen and Michael.

CD's Helping Hands is a registered Charity (CHY17268) supported and endorsed by Our Lady'sHospital for Sick Children Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin, with established links with the PaediatricUnit in University College Hospital Galway, and by the many parents affected in the West ofIreland

The type of help we aim to provide is practical home help, free of charge to the family affected. For example, we will provide an extra pair of hands to help with the daily tasks in the home ofpreparing meals, cleaning; Maintenance of family routine; Home support; Child-minding (ofsiblings while parents are absent at hospital, school drop offs and pick ups); Home maintenance,(lawn cutting refuse etc) Supplementary assistance (for services not covered by HSE); Continuousliaison with family members to maintain the fabric of family life. We are starting with these simpleyet necessary support services and hope to extend them as time goes on.

In supporting CD's Helping Hands you will be responding and contributing assistance to a West ofIreland Charity, filling a major vacuum between public and voluntary health support services, andprotecting vulnerable families at possibly the most crucial time in their lives.
