On Saturday of the Sixth Week of Great Lent, the Holy Church commemorates the Miracle of the Raising of St Lazaros by our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, six days before the Jewish Passover during which He suffered. (JOHN 11:45-57).

The Holy Church Glorifies the Raising of St Lazaros, as proof of the Divine Power of Jesus Christ and as evidence of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and in the General Resurrection of all the dead, as expressed in the Troparion of the Feast.

The Faithful – realising the great value accomplished by our Lord - Commemorates the Divine Miracle by singing:

“O Lord, Thy Voice destroyed the kingdom of Hades and the Word of Thine Authority raised from the grave the one who was dead four days, and Lazaros became once again the Saving First Fruits of the Regeneration of the world. All things are possible to Thee, O Master and King of all.”

At the same time the Holy Church reminds us also that this Event was the beginning of the resolute revolt of the Council of the Priests and Pharisees against our Saviour.

Performed before innumerable witnesses, the Great Miracle of the Resurrection of St Lazaros converted many to the Faith in Jesus Christ, which caused the strongest indignation against Him by the High Priests and Elders of Judah.

Consequently the Sanhedrin decided, upon the wicked instigation of the High Priest, Caiaphas, to arrest our Lord Jesus wherever it would be possible, without causing a public riot. (JOHN 11: 47-50)

Thus the Miraculous Resurrection of St Lazaros served His enemies as the final excuse for their condemning our Lord and Saviour to death.

Since the first century the Divine Services were established to Commemorate this Great Miracle before Holy Week.

In the fourth century the Holy Church of Christ considered the Miraculous Resurrection of St Lazaros to be a solemn Feast, which is evident from the set of Homilies for today that were written by St John Chrysostom, the Blessed St Augustine, and others.

In the seventh and eighth centuries the Sacred Church Hymnographers – St Andrew of Crete, St Cosmas of Maium and St John of Damascus - composed Festal Hymns and Canons for this Feast that are still sung to this day.

Praise Him with tuneful cymbals; praise Him with loud cymbals. Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Martha cried aloud to Mary: “Come, for the Teacher is here and is calling for thee!” And she went quickly to where her Lord wa. And when she saw Thee, she cried; she knelt; she worshipped. As she covered Thine Immaculate Feet with kisses, she said; “O Lord, if Thou had been here, our brother would not have died!”

Arise, O Lord, my God, lift up Thy Hand: do not forget Thy poor forever.

Four days after he had died Thou raised Lazaros in Bethany. As soon as Thou went to the tomb, Thy Voice became Life to the dead man; and Hades, groaning in fear, released him. Great was the Miracle! Most Merciful Lord: Glory to Thee!

I will give Thee thanks, O Lord, with my whole heart: I will tell of all Thy Wonders.

O Lord, even as Thou said to Martha: “I Am the Resurrection,” so Thou fulfilled Thy Word in action by calling back Lazaros from Hades. Resurrect me, also, for I am dead through passions, I beseech Thee, O Compassionate One Who Loves mankind.

Resurrected him who had been four days dead.

Praise God in His Saints; praise Him in the firmament of His Power.

Thou Resurrected Lazaros from Hades after he had been dead for four days, O Christ, thus before Thine own Death, and by means of one whom Thou Loved, foretokening the Liberation of all mankind from corruption. Therefore, adoring Thine Omnipotent Authority, we cry out; Blessed art Thou, O Saviour! Have Mercy on us!

Praise Him for His Mighty Acts; praise Him according to the greatness of His Majesty.

Martha and Mary to our Saviour said: If Thou had been here, O Lord, Lazaros would not have died. Then Christ, the Resurrection of those who in Death have slumbered, Resurrected from the dead the man already four days dead. Therefore, O Believers all: come let us adore Him Who is coming in Glory to Save our souls!

Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet; praise Him with lute and harp.

To Thy Disciples, O Christ, Thou granted the Tokens of Thy Divinity; but Thou humbled Thyself amongst the crowd, Thine Intention being to conceal it from them. Therefore, as the Foreknower of all things, and as God, Thou predicted to Thine Apostles the death of Lazaros. In the presence of the people in Bethany, as though Thou did ot know, as Man, Thou sought the place of Thy Friend’s burial. But when he, who had been four days dead, was Resurrected by Thee, he made Thy Divine Powers manifest. O Almighty One: Glory to Thee, O Lord!

Praise Him with timbrel and dance; praise Him with strings and flute.

Thou raised Thy Friend who was four days dead, O Christ, and brought an end to the lament of Martha and

O D E 1

Of old, when the Israelite had crossed the watery passage as if on dry land, fleeing fromt he misery of Egypt, he cried: “To God our Redeemer, let us sing!”

O D E 3 :

O Divine Master Builder of the Celestial Vault, as the only Lover of mankind and Founder of the Church: establish me, O Lord, in Love for Thee, the Believers’ firm Support and ultimate Object of all desire.

O D E 4

Thou art my Strength. Thou art my Power and Might, O Lord. Thou, my God, art also my Exultant Joy, Who deigned to visit our poverty, with ever leaving the Bosom of Thy Father at any time. To Thee, then do I cry out with Habbakoum the Prophet: To Thy Power be Glory, O Lover of mankind!

O D E 5

Why, O Lord, hast Thou cast me away from Thy Sight, O Never-setting Light, and this foreign darkness now has covered me, miserable as I am? Do, I pray, convert me, and to the Light of Thy Commandments guide my ways, I entreat Thee most fervently.

O D E 6

Be gracious to me, O Lod, for many are my iniquities; and bring me up from the deep of evils, I supplicate. And hear me, O God of my Salvation!

O D E 7

The Children of Judea, who of old, were deported and sent to Babylon, once trod on the fire of the furnace by holding to the Faith in the Trinity, and chanted: “Blessed art Thou, the God of our Fathers!”

O D E 8 :

We Praise, we Bless, and we Worship the Lord.

O Praise and Bless Him Who by the Hosts of Angels is extolled as King

The Pure Theotokos who in Her Womb Conceived the Divine Fire without being burnt, let us honour gloriously, O People, magnifying Her with never-silent Hymns!

>Glory to Thee, O God, Glory to Thee!

When they saw him, who had been dead for four days, walking, the people were amazed by the Miracle and cried to the Redeemer: With never-silent Hymns, O God, we Magnify Thee!

>Glory to Thee, O God, Glory to Thee!

In advance affirming Thy Glorious Arising, my Saviour, from Hades Thou liberated Lazaros who had been dead for four days. Hence, I Magnify Thee with Hymns.

>Glory to Thee, O God, Glory to Thee!

In honour of Thy Father and thus demonstrating that Thou were not against God, O Christ, Thou prayed to Him, when by an Act of Thy Free Will Thou raised on four-days-dead.

>Glory to Thee, O God, Glory to Thee!

An all-trustworthy witness of Thy Three-day rising, Thou showed to all in the person of Lazaros, when from the grave after four days Thou raised him, O my Christ.

> Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit

To demonstrate Thy human energy, my Saviour, Thou walk and weep, and Thou ask where is Lazaros; and to declare Thy Divinity, Thou raised him from the dead.

Now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.

Amen
