    2301A Speed

    Control

    APPLICATIONS

The 2301A Speed Control controls thespeed or load of diesel or gas engines, orsteam or gas turbines.

The unit provides control in theisochronous mode, with droop availablethrough an externally wired potentiometer. The isochronous mode is used forconstant speed of the controlled primemover as long as it is able to providepower to satisfy the load.

The 2301A Speed Control is compatiblewith Woodward SPM-A synchronizers, load sensors, and other power generationcontrols. These controls can be added tothe system at any time, using the auxiliaryor SPM inputs to the 2301A SpeedControl.

The 2301A Speed Control is available forforward- or reverse-acting applications, and can be used with single or tandemactuators. High voltage models accept 88to 132 Vac or 90 to 150 Vac, and lowvoltage models accept 10 to 40 Vdc

    supply for control power.

2301A Speed Controls are also availablewith 4–20 mA speed-setting input (seeproduct specification 02301).

Two Set SpeedsThe control has potentiometer-set LowIdle and Rated Speed settings which areselected with a switch.

    DESCRIPTION

The 2301A Speed Control is housed in asheet-metal chassis and consists of asingle printed circuit board. Allpotentiometers are accessible from thefront of the chassis.

Speed range is set by an internal DIPswitch inside the aluminum cover of thecontrol. Speeds are based on thefrequency of a sensed gear (notnecessarily engine rpm).

Speed Trim A speed trim potentiometer or digitalreference unit may be connected to thecontrol to adjust prime-mover speed froma remote location.

Minimum Fuel A switch may be wired to the control tocall for minimum fuel to the prime mover. This contact is used for normal shutdown.

Failed Signal CircuitThe 2301A Speed Control constantlymonitors the signal from the magnetic

pickup. Should the signal be below aminimum threshold, the control sends aminimum-fuel signal to the actuator. Thiscircuit may be overridden while startingslow-cranking engines.

    SPECIAL FEATURES

Start Fuel Limit A special circuit in the control provides a limit to themaximum fuel setting while an engine is starting. Thisfeature helps limit exhaust smoke and engine damage.

Ramp Times Acceleration time from low idle to rated speed may beadjusted from 1 to 22 seconds. The ramp time fromrated to idle is always less than 1 second, regardless

of the setting of the ramp-time potentiometer.

Reset, Gain, Actuator CompensationThree adjustments are available to permit accurate, responsive engine control. The GAIN control adjustsresponse time to transient load changes. RESETadjusts the overshoot and undershoot which occurs inresponse to load swings. ACTUATORCOMPENSATION sets dynamic response time withina 0 to 500 millisecond range to match the timeconstant of the fuel system.

    Power Supply

2301A Speed Controls accept either a high- or a low-voltage power source. The low-voltage model operateson 10 to 40 Vdc, and the high-voltage model operateson either 88 to 130 Vac or 90 to 150 Vdc.
