Perhaps Coach Howard and the girls should request rights to it for their theme song this season. The Lady O’s have had a successful week, picking up their first conference win against East Buchanan, dominang and winning their own invitaonal and then taking care of Maquoketa Valley on the road last night. Last week it started with a Thursday night conference opener at home and the girls were flawless, winning it in three; 25-14, 25-16 and 25-18. A very pleased Coach Howard told us, “I thought our team was very balanced against East Buchanan. All six front row players were able to record kills. Our seers did a great job mixing up the sets and tempo which I believe kept East Buch off balance in their blocking assignments. Our serving was aggressive tonight and provided a lot of opportunies for us to get into our offensive system. Kayla (East Buch) always has her team playing hard and they didn't give up, but I think our team really showed their ability to move the ball around and play smart." On Saturday, Machovec was busng at the seams with volleyball fans. The Springville Invitaonal brought in 8 teams from the area for a day long bale between 1A and 2A programs. The Oriole’s have placed as high as second in their annual event but this year second place just wouldn’t do—the O’s were their own tournament champions! The girls cruised past MFL and South Winneshiek before spling with Wilton but they won the ebreaking set 15-3 to advance. Aſter a very close 25-23, 25-23 semi-final win against Jesup the girls found themselves across the net from Wilton for the second me in the day. The Oriole’s dropped the first set, 21-25, won the second set decisively, 25-7 and then nipped the e-breaker 15-13 to become the Oriole Champions. "I can't say enough about how proud I and the rest of the staff are of the work our team put in today. We had to earn every win. This tournament was tough and balanced and our girls fought through several moments of adversity to pull out wins. I think we are seeing the payoff for all of the hard work these girls have done over the past few weeks. There were mes we could have dropped a match or two but the team fought hard and showed great heart and resolve. They stayed mentally tough under pressure and finished well. Today was a great day for the Oriole program”, said Coach Howard. And he connued with “ Our serving was key today and a big part of our success. Mikayla Nachazel had a another strong day and I think is finding her strength on the court as she had over 30 kills as did Megan Wagaman. Jordyn Johnson was solid today especially defensively. Chrissy Hoogland had no errors, and despite a lower number of aempts, Chrissy connues to be a big part of seng the tempo of our offense. Great team and program effort today”. On Tuesday, Springville headed to Maquoketa Valley and was able to pull off a road win to move to 2-0 in conference acon. The Lady Wildcats played them tough however, it went 4 sets but the O’s came out on top; 25-10, 20-25, 25-23 and 25-21. Coach Howard again referenced the perseverance of the girls, “The first set we were able to really run our offense which began with great serve receive passing and defense. The second set was dominated by great serving from Maq Valley and we weren't able to adjust fast enough to get ahead. The third and fourth sets we were able to get small leads early and maintain the advantage”. The girls remain road warriors this week as they’ll go to Midland on Thursday and square up in a re-match against a 1-2 Eagles team . Midland did beat the O’s in their tournament just three weeks ago so this is shaping up to be a beauty. Your Lady Orioles remain #8 in IGHSAU polls, they’re 14-6 overall, 2-0 in the Tri-Rivers and #1 with us! (Photo provided by Bobbi Dlouhy)

ORIOLE VOLLEYBALL—ALL THEY DO IS WIN-WIN-WIN

Somebody should write a song about that, “All I do is win win win”… oh wait, I think a guy named DJ Khalid has a hit by that title. Wednesday, September 23, 2015 Oriole Pride 2 CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS SHAVING TIMES

WITH EVERY OPPORTUNITY

Regardless of your sport, hobby or past time, you always want to perform at your highest level. Continuous improvement is what coaches strive for and excellence is what the athletes work for. This season’s cross country teams include athletes who have worked incredibly hard and each meet someone sets a new personal record. Head Coach Steve Pershing said that “the Springville-Central City cross country team had their best performances of the season at the Stormin’ Pointer Invitational Tuesday. The boys team surprised a lot of people in taking third place, finishing ahead of several quality teams”. Junior Sam Lorimer was the leader of the pack, he led his team with “his best time of the season in 17:39, finishing 4th”. Caleb Christiansen finished 20th while Brady Barner, Garrett Wolf, Logan Heath and Nathan Wade then finished 28th through, 31st, and Heath and Wade set new personal bests. “I knew the boys could score well if they could all get healthy. Now they know what they are capable of and are excited about the prospects for the rest of the season” said Coach Pershing. In girls competition, they were led by Junior stand-out Katelyn Gloeckner who lowered her school record by 20 seconds in 21:27 finishing 11th. Janelle Staal also improved her Freshman record to 22:02 in 18th place. Elle Scriver finshed 26th, Sariann Uhlenkamp took over 90 seconds off of her previous best in 24:13 to place 38th and Paige Wolf rounded out the scoring finishing 47th. Next up for the O’s is a Saturday morning meet at the Anamosa Invitational held at Jones County Central Park. Wednesday, September 23, 2015 Oriole Pride 3 ORIOLE FOOTBALL DROPS ROAD GAME

If points were awarded for character and composure, the O’s would have won by a very large margin on Friday. Playing under wet conditions for the second time this season, waiting out a weather delay and playing against a team that did more talking than the panel in a Republican debate—Springville played a valiant game at Midland last Friday. The O’s fell to 1-4 after a 36-12 loss on the road to the Eagles. The ball game was moved up to a 5:30 start time because of poor weather and about mid-way in to the 2nd quarter there was a 30 minute delay called because of Mother Nature. “I think the delay allowed us to regroup with injuries and other things that got us out of what we wanted to do. Based on timing it ended up like a long halftime which this year we have been able to make some adjustments to help us. We were able to do some things that we have not practiced and having this extra time allowed for that to transfer well into the game”, said Coach Martin. The Oriole’s threatened twice on the Midland goal line late in the fourth but just couldn’t break the plane for a score. And while a 1-4 record doesn’t scream success, there certainly are lots of positives with this year’s team. “We are seeing more good things, just have to turn the corner in order to get some things to go our way. We have to stop beating ourselves with turnovers and timely penalties” added Martin. The guys have a week to regroup and prepare for just their second home game of the season when Turkey Valley travels to Allison Field on Friday. “Turkey Valley will not look to throw very much at all which will be a change from the past two weeks. This week we have to control the line of scrimmage and force them to get out of their comfort zone. We have some players banged up for a couple different reasons so have to have others step up even more than they did against Midland” says Coach Martin. It is also Youth Night and there will be a performance by the “Lil’ Cheerleader’s” as well—all ingredients for another great way to kick off your weekend—start time is set for 7pm. (Above is Senior QB Jacob Loehr handing it off to Junior Seth Blake with #88 John Evens making room. Below is Blake (#33) running and Senior Matt Carson in foreground looking for a body to block.

A FACE IN THE CROWD… Oriole Pride features a Springville fan, parent or student from time to

time. This week we caught up with Oriole teacher and Coach, Tyler Husak who took time out of the East Buchanan volleyball game to tell us the following: What was your favorite class in college? Fundamentals of Basketball at Central College Who do you text the most? Coach Sanderson of course What is the best pizza topping? Mushrooms What is your dream car? Anything that gets from point A to point B What do you keep in your second dresser drawer? Running Shorts (how fitting) Thanks Tyler, You just never know—at the next Oriole event You could be more than a Face in the Crowd!

CRAZY MASCOT OF THE WEEK… There’s some pretty wild mascots out there, this week we look at Point Hope, Alaska—on the Northwestern corner of the state and 200 miles NORTH of the Arctic Circle, is home to the Tikigaq School. Tikigaq is the 2nd largest public, K-12 school in Alaska with an enrollment of 250 students. Point Hope, founded as a whaling community over 1500 years ago, lends its heritage to the school Mascot - The Tikegaq Harpooner’s. They compete in few sports with the climate they are in, but their boys basketball team have won 3 consecutive state titles and are known for having an up-tempo style of play. The girls team is called the Harpoonerettes and have made it to the state finals but have yet to win. Tikigaq School curriculum includes a Whaling Class in which they learn the history and the skills of the trade.

WEEKLY PICKS CONTEST… This week we have a combo of Prep, College and Pro football games:

Midland at Elkader Central City at West Central Utah at Oregon Eagles at Jets Make your picks and for the tie-breaker, who throws more passes on Friday in the Springville game? Turkey Valley? Or the O’s? Not individual—as a team, which one ends with more pass attempts? Email us at [email protected] This week we needed the tie-breaker to pick the winner. Jeff Menster and Joel Rochleau were a perfect 4 for 4 but Rochleau nailed the tie-breaker and is this weeks champ. Thanks for playing and have a great week everyone.

THE FAMOUS AMONG US… OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT

Now call me silly, but there are some people who walk among us, and they turn a head or two. Now the heads are turned because they remind us of someone from time to time. This week we take yet another look (yes, we’ve printed this one before) at Springville dad, Kyle Blake. Tell me, does he not look like retired quarterback and NFL analyst Trent Dilfer? I mean—which one of these is the “real” Kyle Blake? Pretty crazy isn’t it?
