Advent: Opening our Heartsto a Year of Mercy

Dear People and Friends of San Juan Bautista,

Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! Thisweek Pope Francis opens the ExtraordinaryJubilee of Mercy for the Universal Church onDecember 8th at Saint Peter’s Basilica inRome, followed by the Year of Mercyopening in local churches on December 13th.The Year symbolically begins with the Popeopening the Holy Door, of which he writes,“the Holy Door will become a Door ofMercy through which anyone who enters willexperience the love of God who consoles,pardons, and instils hope.”

Pope Francis in his Bull of Indictionexplains why he is proclaiming a Year of

Mercy:We must always have a need to contemplate the

mystery that is mercy. That fountain of joy, ofserenity and peace. It is essential to our salvation.Mercy: it is the word that reveals the mystery of theHoly Trinity. Mercy: Is the ultimate and supremeact with which God reaches out to us. Mercy: is thefundamental law that inhabits the heart of everyperson when they look at the siblings theyencounter on the path of life. Mercy: is the way thatunites God and man, because it opens the heart tohope of being loves forever, without limit in our sin.

There are moments in which we are called tohave our eyes fixed on mercy in order to beexemplary symbols of God’s work. It is because ofthis that I have announced an extraordinary Jubileeof Mercy as a proper time for the church, to bestronger and more efficient as a testimony for thebelievers.

Notice that the Holy Father not only intends that allChristians experience God’s mercy more fully, moredeeply, but wants each and every one of us to bewitnesses to this mercy active in our lives. This is what iscalled Intentional Discipleship. The intentional disciplelives in such a way that the love and mercy of the Fatherradiates from them so clearly that others want to becomedisciples as well.

As Isaiah’s words are applied today to John theBaptist: "Prepare the way of the Lord,” may we hear thiscall not only for us to remove all distractions, obstacles,fears and stubbornness to receive the Lord’s mercy andlove more fully into our lives, but be willing to becatalysts for others to be prepared to bask in the warmthand healing of the Father’s mercy. As we recognize howmercifully we are loved by the Lord, our longing andyearning increase in intensity: Maranatha! Come, LordJesus!

Estimados Hermanos y Amigos de San Juan Bautista,

Maranatá! ¡Ven, Señor Jesús! Esta semana PapaFrancisco comienza el Jubileo Extraordinario de laMisericordia de la Iglesia Universal el 8 deDiciembre en la Basílica de San Pedro en Roma,seguido por la apertura del Año de la Misericordiaen las iglesias locales el 13 de Diciembre.Simbólicamente el año comienza cuando el Papaabre la Puerta Santa, sobre la cual él escribe, "LaPuerta Santa se convertirá en una Puerta deMisericordia por la cual cualquier persona que entreexperimentará el amor de Dios que consuela,perdona y que infunde esperanza.

El Papa Francisco en su Bula explica porque elesta proclamando el Año de la Misericordia:

Siempre tenemos necesidad de contemplar el misteriode la misericordia. Es fuente de alegría, de serenidad y depaz. Es condición para nuestra salvación. Misericordia:es la palabra que revela el misterio de la SantísimaTrinidad. Misericordia: es el acto último y supremo con elcual Dios viene a nuestro encuentro. Misericordia: es laley fundamental que habita en el corazón de cada personacuando mira con ojos sinceros al hermano que encuentraen el camino de la vida. Misericordia: es la vía que uneDios y el hombre, porque abre el corazón a la esperanzade ser amados para siempre no obstante el límite denuestro pecado.

Hay momentos en los que de un modo mucho másintenso estamos llamados a tener la mirada fija en lamisericordia para poder ser también nosotros mismossigno eficaz del obrar del Padre. Es por esto que heanunciado un Jubileo Extraordinario de la Misericordiacomo tiempo propicio para la Iglesia, para que haga másfuerte y eficaz el testimonio de los creyentes. (2-3)

Tengamos en cuenta que el Santo Padre no sólo tiene laintención que todos los cristianos experimenten lamisericordia de Dios plenamente, más profundamente, perotambién quiere que todos y cada uno de nosotros seamostestigos de esta misericordia en nuestras vidas. Esto es loque se llama Discipulado Verdadero. El DiscípuloVerdadero vive de tal manera que el amor y la misericordiadel Padre se irradia en ellos tan claramente que otrostambién desean ser discípulos.

Como las palabras de Isaías se aplicación hoy en Juanel Bautista: "Preparen el camino del Señor," podemosnosotros escuchar este llamado no sólo para que nosotroseliminemos todas las distracciones, obstáculos, miedos yterquedades para recibir la misericordia del Señor y amormás plenamente en nuestras vidas, sino que también estardispuestos a ser promovedores para que otros puedan estarpreparados en tomar el calor y la sanadora misericordia delpadre. Al reconocer cuan amados somos por la misericordiadel Señor, nuestro deseo y anhelo aumentan en intensidad:Maranatá! ¡Ven, Señor Jesús!

En Diciembre de 1531, la virgen sele apareció a un Indio, Juan Diego. Enesta serie de apariciones a él, la virgenmanifestó su deseo de que una iglesia seconstruyera en el sitio de su aparición, lacolina de Tepeyac, exactamente a lasafueras de la capital Mexicana. los deseosde la virgen fueron cumplidos cuandoJuan Diego presentó un manto lleno derosas que ella le había dado para elincrédulo obispo. El manto apareciómilagrosamente impreso con la imagende la virgen.

Este manto se encuentra actualmenteen la basílica de Guadalupe, donde haestado desde que fuese transferido in1709 desde capillas anteriores, y es labase para cualquier reproducciónposterior de N. S. de Guadalupe.

La imagen de Nuestra Señora deGuadalupe es muy diferente. María es de aparienciaIndia, con sus manos juntas en oración y sus ojos mirandohacia abajo. Ella esta rodeada por una “mandorla”, unaaureola de rayos dorados y aparece de pie sobre una lunacreciente sostenida por un ángel alado.

El esquema de colores de la capa azul con estrellas ybordes dorados, y el manto rojo con bordados de oro,nunca cambia.

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es la patrona de lasAméricas y se le implora para curar enfermedades y parala protección contra el mal y la guerra. En total 24 papashan honrado en alguna forma oficial a Nuestra Señora deGuadalupe. Su Santidad Juan Pablo II visitó su Basílicaen su primer viaje al extranjero como Papa en 1979 y otravez en 1990. Se arrodilló ante su imagen, invocó suasistencia maternal y se dirigió a Ella como Madre de lasAméricas. En su última visita a México en 1999 JuanPablo II declaró a Nuestra Señora de GuadalupeEmperatriz de toda América.

The image of Nuestra Señora deGuadalupe is very distinct. Mary is Indian in appearance,with her hands together in prayer and her eyes cast down.She is surrounded by a “mandorla”, a halo of golden raysand she stands on a crescent moon which is supported bya winged angel.

The color scheme of the blue mantle with golden starsand trim, and the red robe with gold embroidery, neverchanges.

Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of theAmericas and is implored to remedy ills and forprotection against evil and war. In total, twenty-fourpopes have honored Our Lady of Guadalupe in someofficial form. His Holiness John Paul II visited herBasilica on his first trip as Pope to a foreign country in1979 and another time in 1990. He knelt before herimage, invoked her maternal assistance and addressed heras the Mother of the Americas. On his last visit toMexico in 1999, John Paul II declared Our Lady ofGuadalupe Empress of all the Americas.

Cook/Housekeeper: a part-time position (15-25 hrs/wk) whoseresponsibilities include: keeping the rectory offices and priests'living quarters clean, orderly and presentable at all times;cleaning the religious education building weekly, and providingfor the day-to-day operation of the rectory kitchen, includingplanning, cooking and serving meals for the priests and visitors.

Pastoral Visitor/Nurse: a part-time position (10 hrs/wk). Theposition involves visiting our parishioners who are homebound,in nursing homes and hospitals. This position requires amature, professional, responsible and committed individualwith excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonalskills. An understanding of parish structure and ministry isnecessary, as well as the need to maintain confidentiality. Mustbe a Catholic in good standing. Degree as a Registered Nurseand/or Licensed Practical Nurse (or equivalent) is required.
