ommercial aviation is constantly evolving; regional aviation is anexcellent example of this constant evolution. As many of you I am sure

are aware, the aviation industry is, at present, going through an intense periodof change - unknown until now - as a result of the global economic crisisand its side effects: falls in flight demand and income per passenger. AIRNOSTRUM is, in the face of these adverse conditions, making a great effortto adapt to this new situation. One of our aims is to turn AIR NOSTRUMinto the European regional aviation sector’s leading protagonist. We have always considered our company as flexible and today, morethan ever before, it is time to demonstrate this flexibility. With this in mind,and the changes taking place in the aviation sector, we have decided tore-dimension our aircraft fleet. Our objective is to provide an efficientanswer to the present demands of the market. The result is a reduction inthe total number of aircraft in our fleet whilst incorporating new aircraftwith greater seating capacity.The objectives included in the action plan we designed to survive thepresent aviation sector crisis are becoming a reality thanks to the recentagreements signed between AIR NOSTRUM and the aircraft manufacturers,Bombardier and ATR. As a result of the negotiations carried out, our presentaircraft fleet, comprising 68 aircraft units, will be, by 2016, reduced to atotal of 55 aircraft. I am pleased to inform you that AIR NOSTRUM closed an agreement in

Paris last month with Bombardier for the acquisition of 15 new CRJ1000NextGen regional jets following an agreement signed two years ago for theincorporation of 20 units of this new, higher capacity regional aviationjet manufactured by the above-mentioned Canadian aircraft manufacturer.AIR NOSTRUM is proud to become the launch customer for this new, 100-seater regional jet. Our plan is to introduce 35 units of this next generationregional jet into our aircraft fleet by 2016. This new aircraft model,acquired to replace AIR NOSTRUM’s 50-seater aircraft, is considered theregional aviation sector’s most technologically advanced, and one of themost environmentally friendly, regional jets on the market.We have also negotiated the renewal of our fleet of turboprop aircraftwith the acquisition of 10 new ATR72 aircraft units designed to provide,above all, greater cabin comfort. The new ATR72 has, thanks to itsadvanced technology, the lowest levels of fuel consumption and CO2gas emissions in its sector.The acquisition of the above-mentioned aircraft will provide AIRNOSTRUM with the most competitive and up-to-date aircraft fleetin Europe, placing it in an excellent position to cope with thedemanding market conditions of the future. The best way toimprove the quality of our passenger service, without losingthe advantage we hold over other airlines is, in our opinion,to create a fleet of technologically advanced aircraftoffering greater fuel efficiency and increased seatingcapacity.

momentos vivimos un intenso periodo de cambios –como nunca anteshabíamos conocido– surgido de la difícil situación que atraviesala economía mundial y que fundamentalmente se resume en unamenor demanda de vuelos y una fuerte caída del ingreso medio porpasajero. Ante este adverso contexto, en AIR NOSTRUM estamostrabajando intensamente para adaptarnos al nuevo escenario con lafirme voluntad de convertirnos en el principal protagonista de laaviación regional en Europa. Siempre hemos sido una empresa muy flexible y hoy más quenunca tenemos que demostrarlo. Por eso varias de las medidasque hemos adoptado para afrontar esta época de transformacióndel sector aéreo están relacionadas con el redimensionamiento denuestra flota. Tenemos que dar una respuesta más eficaz al actualtamaño del mercado y responder a las nuevas demandas de lospasajeros y eso pasa por reducir el número total de aviones a la vezque incorporamos aeronaves con mayor capacidad. Estos eran dos de los principales objetivos contemplados por AIRNOSTRUM en el plan de acción desarrollado para afrontar la crisisdel sector, que se llevarán a cabo con la firma de dos contratos conlos fabricantes Bombardier y ATR. Dichos acuerdos permitirán anuestra compañía disponer de 55 aviones en 2016 frente a los 68 actuales,a la vez que aumentamos el número total de plazas en nuestra flota.El pasado mes de junio, AIR NOSTRUM cerró en París un acuerdo conBombardier para la adquisición de 15 nuevos reactores CRJ1000, que seunirán a otras 20 unidades de este modelo incluidas en el acuerdo firmadohace dos años para la incorporación de reactores de mayor módulo yúltima generación de la firma canadiense. De esta forma, AIR NOSTRUMse convertirá en el cliente lanzador de esta nueva aeronave regionalcon capacidad para 100 pasajeros y dispondrá en 2016 de una flota de35 CRJ1000. Este nuevo modelo, que sustituirá de manera paulatina a losmodelos de 50 plazas, es el producto tecnológicamente más avanzado delsector regional y el más respetuoso con el medio ambiente de entre losreactores existentes en el mercado.Del mismo modo hemos pactado la renovación de la flota de turbohélicesmediante la adquisición de 10 nuevos ATR 72, con interiores más confor-tables, nuevos motores más eficientes y el índice de emisiones de CO2más bajo de la aviación regional. Todos estos cambios nos permitirán contar con la flota más moderna ycompetitiva de la aviación regional europea, al tiempo que nos prepa-rarán definitivamente para afrontar con la mejor estrategia las exigentescondiciones de mercado previstas para el futuro. Solo con una flota deaviones nuevos de última generación, con mejor eficiencia energéticay de mayor capacidad, podremos mejorar la calidad que nuestrospasajeros perciben de AIR NOSTRUM, pero sin perder por ello laprincipal ventaja diferencial que siempre ha caracterizado a nuestracompañía: la permanente vocación de servicio al cliente.

Manuel Azaña, el presidente del Gobierno español, seacomoda junto a varios ministros y otros 3.000 espectadores en las gradasmilenarias del teatro romano “desenterrado al sol”, como diría el escritor Miguel deUnamuno. Todos esperan la aparición de Margarita Xirgu. Es el gran estreno deMedea, de Séneca, en una versión del propio Unamuno escrita ex profeso para estanoche y a petición de la actriz. La Xirgu está a punto de cumplir su sueño: devolvera este escenario de piedra su función original.

Merida, 18th June, 1933. Manuel Azaña, the President of the Spanish Government,makes himself comfortable together with a number of government ministers and3,000 other spectators in the millennial stands of the Roman Theatre, “desenterradoal sol” (disinterred by the sun) as the famous writer, Miguel de Unamuno, wouldsay. The spectators are waiting for Margarita Xirgu to appear in the premiere ofMedea by Seneca. The version about to be performed was written by Unamuno asrequested by Margarita Xirgu who is about to make one of her dreams come true,to see this ancient stone monument returned to its original function.

sa primera representación de hace 76 años, siglos después de las representacionesromanas, fue el germen del Festival de Mérida, una cita con el teatro clásico grecolatino

que convoca cada año a grandes nombres de la escena internacional y que se ha convertidoen el principal referente cultural de Extremadura, y uno de los principales de España. Sinembargo, este festival es sólo uno de los trece que acoge la región de junio a septiembre conmúsica, teatro, ambientaciones populares, mercadillos artesanales e incluso circo y magia,que invitan a emprender un viaje cultural en el tiempo y en decorados naturales al aire libre.

El calendario arranca en Cáceres el 10 de junio con el Festival de Teatro Clásico, que ensu vigésima edición, marcadamente europeísta –con montajes italianos, franceses y portu-gueses–, busca impulsar decididamente la candidatura de la ciudad como Capital Europeade la Cultura en 2016. Sólo durante los fines de semana, esta cita propone un reencuentrocon las letras del Siglo de Oro en escenarios montados al raso en las bellas plazoletasde la ciudad monumental, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco. Serán17 representaciones en 26 funciones, como El enfermo imaginario y Don Juan, de Molière;El sueño de una noche de verano y La comedia de los errores, de Shakespeare; o La vidaes sueño y La dama duende, de Calderón de la Barca.

El mismo día que baja el telón el festival cacereño lo sube el de Mérida, que en suedición más “internacional”, según sus organizadores, volverá a contemplar a otra Medea,encarnada por una de las chicas Almodóvar del momento: Blanca Portillo. Pero tambiénse verá a Rafael Álvarez El Brujo en El Evangelio de San Juan; a Eusebio Poncela, comoEdipo; a los agitadores cómicos de Animalario en Tito Andrónico o a Marcial Álvarez en lacomedia de Los gemelos, cuya dirección firma la inglesa Tamzin Townsend. El cartel del2009, que se extiende hasta el 30 de agosto, presenta 43 representaciones y numerosasactividades paralelas.

Alcántara, una pequeña villa cacereña de 1.700 habitantes, famosa por su puenteromano y por ser cuna de la Orden de Alcántara, reúne a otros seis clásicos, del 6 al 11 deagosto, junto a su convento del siglo XVI. En él se sucederán El Evangelio de San Juande Rafael Álvarez El Brujo, un Tartufo de la compañía Alquibla, La dama duende o laFuenteovejuna de Lope de Vega filtrada por la mirada inglesa de Laurence Boswell, dela Royal Shakespeare Company.

he classical play, Medea, starring Margarita Xirgu, took place 76 years ago,centuries after the original classical play. It was to become the seed of the

present-day Merida Classical Theatre Festival. Today, this impressive festival attractssome of the most important names on the international scene and is Extremadura’smost important cultural reference point, as well as a reference point for the rest ofSpain. It is, however, only one of the thirteen festivals taking place in Extremadurabetween June and September. Musical, theatrical and thematic events along withartisan markets and circus and magic shows have been prepared to take visitorson a cultural journey into the past in open-air areas, full of natural and monumentalscenery.

The festival season in Extremadura began on 10th June following the inaugurationof the 20th Caceres Classical Theatre Festival. This year’s festival programme wasimbued with a definite European feel to it with Italian, French and Portuguese works;the perfect scenario for promoting the city’s 2016 European Culture Capitalnomination. The works performed during this edition of the festival, in a reencounterwith the ‘Siglo de Oro’, took place on open-air stages located in the picturesquetown squares of this monumental city, declared a World Heritage Site by theUNESCO. A total of 17 representations and 26 performances took place thatincluded Moliere’s El Enfermo Imaginario and Don Juan; William Shakespeare’sA Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Comedy of Errors and Calderon de la Barca’sLa Vida es Sueño and La Dama Duende.

This year’s Merida Classical Theatre Festival, one of its most internationalaccording to the organisers, was inaugurated on 27th June. This edition includesMedea, this time portrayed by one of Pedro Almodovar’s ‘girls’, Blanca Portillo. Otherworks include Evangelio de San Juan with Rafael Alvarez ‘El Brujo’; Edipus withEusebio Poncela; the disruptive elections of Animalario in Tito Andonico and thecomedy, Los Gemelos, presenting Marcial Alvarez and the English director, TamzinTownsend. This year’s Merida Festival Programme has been extended to 30th Augustand will be offering 43 performances along with a large number of parallel activities.

Alcantara, a small town in Caceres with 1,700 inhabitants, famous for its RomanBridge and for being the cradle of the Order of Alcantara, will be presenting sixclassical theatrical works to take place between 6th and 11th August, next to thetown’s beautiful 16th century convent. The works include Evangelio de San Juanstarring Rafael Alvarez ‘El Brujo’, Tartufo performed by the Alquibla Theatre Group,

CITAS TAN VARIADAS COMO ATRACTIVASOtras cuatro iniciativas recrean el pasado extremeño con ambientaciones de época a

través de teatrillos callejeros, danzas medievales, mercadillos, banquetes y otras activi-dades en las que participan los propios ciudadanos: Cáceres Evocado, del 3 al 18 de julio,reconstruye la vida cotidiana española en el tiempo de Felipe III. Alburquerque, un pequeñomunicipio de Badajoz próximo a la frontera portuguesa, regresa, del 13 al 15 de agosto,al medievo en torno al amor ilegítimo del príncipe don Pedro I de Portugal con doña Inésde Castro, enviada por el rey de Portugal a este rincón extremeño. Hervás, al norte de laprovincia cacereña, evoca su pasado judío con la fiesta popular de Los Conversos. Y enZalamea de la Serena, a 92 kilómetros al este de Mérida, el tercer fin de semana de agostolos vecinos representan el drama de honor que Calderón de la Barca situó en sus calles.

Cerca de esta última localidad se encuentra Villanueva de la Serena. Allí, del 8 al 11 dejulio, en el Festival de Teatro en la Calle, una decena de compañías (Markeliñe, Vagalumeo el cómico Leo Bassi) ocupan vías y plazas con fábulas, cabarets y comedias. Algoparecido ocurre en Cabeza del Buey, en la misma comarca de La Serena, pero con el circo.Por Buey de Cabeza desfilan del 18 al 20 de septiembre una docena de grupos nacionalese internacionales, que dan a conocer las renovadas artes circenses. Eso sí, sin animales nicarpa. Igualmente interesante, aunque muy distinto, es el Festival Templario de Jerez de losCaballeros, que este año se celebra entre el 16 y el 19 de julio: la hermosa ciudad del surextremeño recupera su pasado histórico, recreando –con la participación de muchosjerezanos– los últimos momentos de los templarios y los episodios de la famosa TorreSangrienta.

UN VERANO TAMBIÉN PARA LA MÚSICALa música es otro atractivo del verano cultural extremeño. Europe, Barricada o Barón

Rojo son algunos de los 80 grupos heavy del cartel con el que Cáceres estrena este año(del 2 al 4 de julio) el Festival del Oeste. Badajoz programa su segundo encuentro entre elfado y el flamenco en Badasom del 8 al 11 de julio, con nombres como Carmen Linares,Vicente Amigo o Cristina Branco. En Alburquerque Lacrosse, The Wedding Present, La BienQuerida o Sidonie son algunos de los proyectos musicales del indie español e internacionalque han convertido a Contempopránea (del 23 al 25 de julio) en un festival de referencia ensu género. Y en los terrenos del folk, Plasencia, la segunda ciudad de la provincia cacereña,compone (del 19 al 22 de agosto) un repertorio de sonidos de una tradición musicalrenovada con intensidad en las últimas décadas. Sin programa definido aún, en edicionespasadas actuaron históricos como Gwendal o virtuosos como Kepa Junquera.

En definitiva, un panorama tan variado como sugerente. Una de las mejores cartelerasdel ocio español para los próximos meses.

AN ATTRACTIVE AND VARIED PROGRAMMEA number of street theatre performances, medieval dancing, small markets,

banquets and other activities will, with the help of local inhabitants, recreate theatmosphere of Extremadura’s ancient past. Caceres Evocado, taking place from 3rdto 18th July, reconstructs everyday life in Spain during the reign of Felipe III.Alburquerque, a small municipality located in Badajoz, close to the Portugueseborder, also visits the Middle Ages, from 13th to 15th August, thanks to theillegitimate love affair between Prince Pedro I of Portugal, sent to this part ofExtremadura by the King of Portugal, and Ines de Castro. Meanwhile, the town ofHervas, located in the northern part of the province of Caceres, evokes its Jewishpast with the Los Conversos Festival, whilst the inhabitants of Zalamea de la Serena,92 kilometres east of Merida, perform, on the third weekend of August, the localdrama written by Calderon de la Barca.

Close by in Villanueva de la Serena, a street theatre festival will be taking placefrom 8th to 11th July. Ten theatre groups (Markeliñe, Vagalume, Leo Bassi etc.)will fill the streets and town squares with fables, cabaret and comedy. Somethingsimilar is programmed to take place in the town of Cabeza del Buey, also located inthe region of La Serena, although this time the acts in question are circus acts. Adozen national and international groups will be performing here from 18th to 20thSeptember offering a variety of modern circus performances. On a completelydifferent note, we would mention the Templar Festival in Jerez de los Caballeroswhich has, this year, be programmed to take place between 16th and 19th July.This beautiful town, located in the south of Extremadura, recovers its past byrecreating, with the participation of numerous inhabitants, the last moments of theTemplar Knights and the famous Torre Sangrienta (Bloody Tower) events.

A SUMMER FULL OF MUSICMusic is another of Extremadura’s popular summer attractions. Europe, Barricada

and Baron Rojo are three of the 80 rock groups that will be taking part in the Festivaldel Oeste, from 2nd to 4th July, in Caceres. Badajoz will be offering its secondencounter between the Portuguese Fado and Spanish Flamenco in Badasom, from8th to 11th July, with the participation of artists such as Carmen Linares, VicenteAmigo and Cristina Branco. In Alburquerque, Lacrosse, The Wedding Present, LaBien Querida and Sidonie are some of the national and international Indie groupsthat have turned Contempopranea Music Festival, taking place from 23rd to 25thJuly, into an authentic Indie reference point. As far as folk music is concerned,Plasencia will be offering the Plasencia Folk Festival, from 19th to 22nd August,with a repertory of traditional musical sounds brought to date over the past decades.Although this year’s programme is still to be announced, we would mention thatartists from previous editions included historical figures such as Gwendal andvirtuosos such as Kepa Junquera.

This summer Extremadura provides a varied and very appealing panoramaoffering one of Spain’s best summer entertainment programmes.

que nací mi madre y mi hermano Marc le acompañábamos a todos los partidos. Eso hizoque conociese este deporte y me aficionase a él.¿Creías que podrías debutar en la ACB con tan sólo quince años?La verdad es que no, esperaba conseguir títulos en mi club el Joventut y que me dieran laoportunidad de debutar joven, pero no me esperaba que fuese tan pronto.¿Qué destacarías de tu juego?La verdad es que actualmente creo que mi mejor baza son las ganas que tengo de jugar albaloncesto.¿Qué crees que necesitas mejorar?Por mi edad y para mi futuro prefiero plantearme mejorar todos los aspectos de mijuego, entrenando de manera global conseguiré ser un jugador completo, sin ningún puntodébil.De todos los triunfos que has conseguido, ¿con cuál te quedarías?Hay varios y se hace difícil elegir pero podría decir que el Campeonato Europeo de Jaén, laCopa del Rey con el Joventut y la medalla de los Juegos Olímpicos.¿A qué crees que es debido que España sea el país que más jugadores aportaa la NBA? hen did you first become interested in basketball?My father trained a girl’s basketball team in Mataro (Barcelona). I went with my

mother and brother, Marc, to watch the games ever since I was a baby. That is how I gothooked on basketball. Did you ever imagine that you could make your debut in the ACB at 15-years-old?The truth is I did not. I did expect to win some competitions with my local club, theJoventut, and that they would give me the opportunity of making my debut, but I neverexpected it to happen so soon.In which area would you say you stand out?I guess that one of the best advantages I have, and where I stand out at the moment, ismy enthusiasm.Which part of your game do you think you need to improve?At my age and taking the future into consideration, I would say I need to improve allthe aspects of my game. I’m sure if I work on all aspects, I will become an all-roundplayer, with no particular weak points.Which of your victories means the most to you?It is hard to choose because I have had quite a few. If I have to choose though, I wouldsay the European Championships in Jaen, the King’s Cup, playing with the JoventudBasketball Club, and the Olympic Games silver medal.Why do you think Spain has so many players in the NBA compared to other countries?Spain spends a lot of effort training its young players. We also have very good trainerswhich help to speed up this process. Stories of heroes, heroic deeds and victories on the one hand and hard work, disappointment and brokendreams on the other, form part of the daily life of the Comunitat Valenciana thanks to its role as host to anumber of important international sports events such as the America’s Cup, the Volvo Ocean Race and theFormula 1 European Grand Prix. These stories also exist on a national level, involving sportsmen and womenfrom all over the Comunitat Valenciana. Sport has become, in the Comunitat Valenciana, an important touristattraction, a unique scenario for experiencing the emotion of sport at its best.

GRANDES EVENTOSLos grandes eventos, que han abierto la Comunitat Valenciana al mundo entero, han

conseguido, en los albores del siglo XXI, miles de adeptos para los que el deporte se haconvertido en un estilo de vida. La celebración de la America’s Cup en Valencia o el iniciode la Volvo Ocean Race en Alicante en 2008 han convertido la Comunitat Valenciana en elescenario de los principales acontecimientos deportivos. Igual que el Gran Premio deEuropa de Fórmula 1, el campeonato del Mundo de Atletismo en pista cubierta de 2007, laCopa Davis, que ha tenido como escenario el parque temático Terra Mítica de Benidorm yel Global Champion Tour de hípica, que ha reunido en la Ciudad de las Artes y las Cienciasa los mejores jinetes y amazonas del mundo y lo seguirá haciendo hasta 2011.

Sin embargo, aún hay más. En los próximos meses la Comunitat Valenciana acogeráotros eventos deportivos de primer orden como el Open de Tenis 500 de Valencia, elMaster Golf Castelló Costa Azahar e incluso la posibilidad de que Valencia sea subsedeOlímpica de Vela si Madrid resulta elegida como sede olímpica en 2016. Esto unido a laVolvo Ocean Race, el Campeonato del Mundo de Motociclismo o la Fórmula 1 que repitenedición tras edición, es una oportunidad de llegar a todo tipo de públicos y en diversaslenguas, un empuje tanto deportivo y de infraestructuras como social, económico,medioambiental y, por supuesto, cultural.

DOS COMPETICIONES DE VELALa America’s Cup y la Volvo Ocean Race son dos competiciones de vela diametralmente

opuestas que se han celebrado en aguas valencianas. Valencia y Alicante son los puertosdonde se han protagonizado las duras regatas. La primera, la America’s Cup, celebrada enValencia en 2007, y la segunda, la vuelta al mundo a vela, que ha tenido Alicante comopuerto base y de salida en 2008.

GREAT SPORTING EVENTSThe majority of the great sporting events that have placed the Comunitat

Valenciana on the sporting map have taken place at the dawning of the 21st century.These magnificent events have turned the Comunitat Valenciana into an internationalshowcase that has attracted thousands of sporting fans, converting sport into away of life here. The America’s Cup in the province of Valencia and the first stage ofthe Volvo Ocean Race in the province of Alicante have played an important role inturning the Comunitat Valenciana into the scenario of other important sportingevents such as the Formula 1 European Grand Prix, the 2007 World Indoor AthleticChampionships, the Davis Cup, hosted at the Terra Mitica Theme Park in Benidorm,and the equestrian Global Champions Tour, hosted at the Valencia Arts & ScienceCentre. This event, which Valencia will continue to host up to 2011, attracted thisyear some of the world’s best equestrians.

This list of important sporting events continues to grow as the ComunitatValenciana prepares to host, over the next few months, the Valencia 500 TennisOpen and the Castello Masters Costa Azahar golf competition. There is also a strongpossibility that it will host a number of Olympic sailing events if Madrid is finallychosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games. These events, together with the VolvoOcean Race, the World Motorcycling Championship and annual Formula 1 EuropeanGrand Prix, provide the opportunity of contacting with a wide range of national andinternational public. They also provide an important impulse for sport and urbaninfrastructure along with an increase in social, economic, environmental and, ofcourse, cultural activities.

TWO SAILING EVENTSThe America’s Cup and the Volvo Ocean Race are two diametrically opposed

sailing events hosted in Valencia and Alicante respectively. The America’s Cup tookplace in Valencia in 2007 whilst the Volvo Ocean Race, a round the world sailingevent, chose Alicante in 2008 for the event’s headquarters and first stage activities.

The America’s Cup, the world’s oldest trophy event, has managed, during 32editions, to bring together numerous members of the world’s sailing elite. In 2007,the ‘One Hundred Guinea Cup’ found its way back to Europe, after 150 years, thanksto the Swiss Alinghi Team’s victory against the New Zealand Team. The rules of thisfamous sailing event state that it must take place at sea. It was for this reason theSwiss team decided, having studied a large number of venues, to designate Valenciaas host to the 32nd America’s Cup, a wise choice if taking into consideration that theAlinghi Team won this prestigious sailing event for the second year running.

La America’s Cup es el trofeo deportivo más antiguo del mundo y en cada una de sus 32ediciones ha conseguido reunir lo mejor del mundo de la vela. En 2007 y después de másde 150 años la Copa de las 100 Guineas regresa a Europa gracias al triunfo del sindicatosuizo Alinghi frente a Team New Zeland. El reglamento de la America's Cup obliga a queel campo de regatas sea en agua salada, por ello los suizos, tras descartar infinidad deopciones, designan Valencia como ciudad anfitriona de la 32ª America’s Cup. La elecciónresulta acertada, ya que en el Mediterráneo valenciano el Alinghi vuelve a alzarse con unmerecido triunfo.

Un año más tarde, el mundo entero mira hacia Alicante, que recoge el testigo de Valenciay organiza la salida de la Volvo Ocean Race, una regata con escalas alrededor del mundo, ycuyas próximas ediciones zarparán de nuevo desde el puerto alicantino. En 2008, por primeravez, participan dos veleros españoles, ambos dirigidos por el regatista Pedro Campos, quedurante nueve meses han dado la vuelta al mundo. El recorrido, de 37.000 millas náuticas, hasido el más largo de la historia de la regata y ha pasado por los cinco océanos. Muchas sonlas cosas que han cambiado en esta regata desde 1973, fecha de inicio aunque, sin duda,todavía mantiene el espíritu aventurero e indómito de sus tripulaciones.

Las dos competiciones marinas han propiciado en la Comunitat Valenciana una enormeafición por el deporte de la vela, tal y como demuestra la asistencia a los cursos organi-zados por clubes náuticos, puertos deportivos y a los de la Goleta Tirant con base enValencia y el Pailebote Pascual Flores con base en Torrevieja.

EL MOTOR, OTRO PROTAGONISTAOtras gestas deportivas tienen en Valencia el motor como protagonista. Este es el caso

del Gran Premio de Europa de Fórmula 1 o la última prueba del Campeonato del Mundo deMotociclismo que cada año se celebra en Cheste.

La carrera que se disputa en el Circuit Ricardo Tormo de Cheste es un complejo entramadodeportivo, social y económico que se traduce en uno de los eventos deportivos más impor-tantes de los que se celebran en España. A lo largo de tres días el mundo del motor tienepuesta su mirada en la Comunitat Valenciana. Ver en directo a Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa,Héctor Barberá o Héctor Faubel, entre otros pilotos españoles, enfrentarse a corredores de latalla de Valentino Rossi o Andrea Dovizioso, es una delicia para los más de 200.000 espec-tadores que el Circuit Ricardo Tormo acoge cada año.

La Fórmula 1 también supone un gran estímulo para visitar la Comunitat Valencianagracias al Gran Premio de Europa que, a finales de agosto, se celebra por segunda vez enla capital del Turia en el Valencia Street Circuit, uno de los pocos circuitos urbanos delcampeonato. Este año, de nuevo, la emoción está servida en Valencia donde se podrá veren directo el duelo por los primeros puestos de la clasificación, comprobar el impresio-nante rendimiento de los monoplazas e incluso esperar lo inesperado merced a una delas increíbles hazañas de Fernando Alonso. La décimosegunda prueba del campeonatomundial de Fórmula 1, que promete ser otra vez una de las más espectaculares, reuniráfrente al televisor a casi 500 millones de espectadores de todo el mundo y en directo a másde 115.000 personas.

OTOÑO DE TENIS Y GOLFPor segundo año consecutivo, el circuito europeo de golf llega el próximo otoño a la

Comunitat Valenciana con el Castelló Masters Costa Azahar que, a finales del mes deoctubre, se vuelve a celebrar en el Club de Campo Mediterráneo de Borriol. De este modo,Castellón recibe con los brazos abiertos a los mejores jugadores de golf del mundo, los

These two exciting sailing events have created large numbers of sailingenthusiasts judging from the number of participants taking part in the sailingcourses organised by local nautical and yacht clubs and the Goleta Tirant, inValencia, and Pailebote Pascual Flores, in Torrevieja, school ships.

MOTOR RACING, ANOTHER IMPORTANT PROTAGONISTOther important sporting events taking place in Valencia are the Formula 1

European Grand Prix and the World Motorcycle Championship Final held annuallyin Cheste.

The Ricard Tormo Racing Circuit, Cheste, with its complex sporting, social andeconomic framework, is the venue for one of Spain’s most important internationalmotorcycle racing events. Over a period of three days, the motorcycling world keepsits eyes firmly fixed on the Comunitat Valenciana with Spanish motorcyclingchampions such as Jorge Lorenzo, Dani Pedrosa, Hector Barbera and Hector Faubel,amongst others, competing against other elite motorcycling champions such asValentino Rossi and Andrea Dovizioso, an unforgettable experience for many ofthe 200,000 spectators that make their way to the Ricardo Tormo Racing Circuiteach year.

The Formula 1 European Grand Prix also provides a good reason for visiting theComunitat Valenciana. At the end of this August, the Formula 1 European Grand Prixwill, for the second year running, be taking place on the Valencia Street Circuit,. ThisFormula 1 race, taking place on one of the world’s newest street circuits, offersspectators a first hand view of the classification races of this famous grand prixalong with the possibility of witnessing one of Fernando Alonso’s incredible exploits.This year’s 12th round of the Formula 1 World Motor Racing Championship promisesto be one of the most spectacular. It is expected to attract nearly 500 million televisionspectators and 115 thousands live spectators from all over the world.

AUTUMN OF TENNIS AND GOLFThanks to the Castello Masters Costa Azahar golf competition, the European Golf

Circuit will be visiting the Comunitat Valenciana for the second year running nextautumn. This important event will take place at the Club de Campo Mediterraneogolf grounds in Borriol at the end of October. The province of Castellon will welcome,once again, some of the world’s best players, players of the standard of SergioGarcia, the Spanish golf champion, who has signed up for this 72 hole stroke playcompetition.

In the meantime, the ATP (Professional Tennis Association) has restructured itscalendar. Valencia will, this year, be hosting the Open 500 competition along with ten

Por otra parte, el calendario ATP se reestructura este año y Valencia entra con fuerza enla categoría de los Open 500 junto a otras diez ciudades. Se espera la participación de tenistas comoRafael Nadal y Fernando Verdasco, además de los valencianos David Ferrer y Juan CarlosFerrero, los dos organizadores del evento.

El torneo valenciano se disputa del 2 al 8 de noviembre de 2009 en el espacio del Ágorade la Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, un escenario ya bien conocido por albergargrandes conciertos y competiciones deportivas como el Global Champion Tour.

Precisamente gracias a este evento, Valencia se ha incorporado a la élite de la hípica. Esuno de los grandes premios hípicos que se celebran cada año en diez ciudades del mundoentre abril y noviembre. Este año, el torneo ha contado con la participación de 30 jinetes y160 caballos que han competido en una pista situada sobre el lago del museo PríncipeFelipe de la Ciudad de las Ciencias.

Aunque si bien la Comunitat Valenciana se ha convertido en pocos años en un escenariohabitual de los más destacados acontecimientos deportivos mundiales, la funcionalidad yversatilidad de las instalaciones han posibilitado acercar el deporte a todo el mundo. No envano, las tres provincias valencianas albergan concentraciones de equipos nórdicos defútbol y balonmano y entrenamientos habituales de atletas y tenistas que proceden de otrospaíses en los que el frío dificulta la práctica deportiva. Pero, sobre todo, gracias a que lainfraestructura deportiva valenciana se ha consolidado en la vertiente más social deldeporte, la que permite el uso y disfrute de unas instalaciones de las que quizá, en un futurono muy lejano, vuelvan a salir figuras mundiales del nivel de David Ferrer, Fernando Alonsoo Sergio García.

This magnificent tournament will take place between 2nd and 8th November,2009, in the Agora, situated in the Valencia Arts & Science Centre, known forhosting important concerts and sporting competitions such as the previouslymentioned Global Champions Tour.

In fact, it was thanks to the Global Champions Tour that Valencia was given theopportunity of playing host to a number of the equestrian elite. We would mentionthat the Global Champions Tour is one of the world’s most important riding events.It takes place between April and November each year in ten different cities. Thisyear 30 riders and 160 horses will be competing on a course installed on the lake infront of the Principe Felipe Science Museum.

The Comunitat Valenciana has, over the past few years, become the scenario ofsome of the world’s most outstanding sporting events thanks to the functionalityand versatility of its sporting installations, responsible for attracting large numbersof sports champions. It is not in vain that Valencia’s three provinces provide traininginstallations for a number of Nordic football and handball teams as well as areasfor athletes and tennis players from countries where weather conditions maketraining difficult. From a social point of view, Valencia’s sporting infrastructure offersyoung sportsmen and women the possibility of training in different types of sportinginstallations which might, who knows, in the not too distant future see the rise ofSpanish world champions such as David Ferrer, Fernando Alonso and Sergio Garciaamongst many others.

ahon-Menorca cheese is the coveted fruit of a unique landscape declared aWorld Biosphere Reserve by the UNESCO in 1993. The local cheese and dairy

products continue to constitute a key element in the rural community’s lifestyle. Infact, the local dairy product industry is a key factor in the preservation of the localenvironment.

The Mahon-Menorca Protected Denomination of Origin (DOP) label, with its highquality standard, was introduced in 1985 as a measure to protect this ancient cheese.Mahon-Menorca cheese has, since then, become extremely popular and is guaranteedto become even more so in the future thanks to the fact that it is, today, one of theBalearic Islands’ best known artisanal food products and a worthy candidate for theexcellent promotional activities carried out by the Regional Ministry of Commerce ofthe Govern de les Illes Balears and Consell Insular de Menorca.

CHARACTERISTICSDOP Mahon-Menorca cheese is rich in protein (25%), highly digestible and has a

high energy ratio. It contains substantial amounts of vitamin A and B as well ascalcium, phosphorus and magnesium.

This delicious cheese is made exclusively with cow’s milk, produced by cowsgrazing on the Island’s pasture lands. Two types of cheese are manufactured: Mahon-Menorca Cheese and Mahon-Menorca Artisan Cheese. The artisanal cheese is madewith raw milk and pressed into a box shape by the curd being poured into a‘fogasser’ (a piece of linen or cotton cloth) that is supported on all four sides andfilled with enough curd to obtain the right sized cheese. The ‘fogasser’ also producesthe characteristic marks found on the top of the cheese.

Once the curing process is over, the cheese is provided with a ProtectedDenomination of Origin numbered label by the Regulatory Council that accredits itsquality and authenticity.

During the curing process, the cheese is placed on shelves made of narrow woodenstrips in underground caves. It is turned over from time to time and brushed with oliveoil and/or paprika as part of the maturing process, giving it its characteristic colour.

The Mahon-Menorca soft cheese (cured for no more than 60 days) has a mild,characteristic acidic taste, a whitish yellowy colour and a soft rind.

The semi-cured cheese (cured for two to five months) has high elasticity and amild, slightly salty, acidic taste.

Finally, the cured cheese (cured for over five months) has a highly evolved intensetaste and aroma with a persisting flavour in the mouth, an authentic pleasure forany cheese lover.

en el mantenimiento del modelo de vida del campesinado menorquín. Y su producción, unfactor clave en la preservación del entorno.

La Denominación de Origen Protegida (DOP) Mahón-Menorca asume desde 1985 estatradición milenaria y establece unos altos estándares de calidad. El queso Mahón-Menorcavive un gran presente y tendrá un gran futuro, ya que su calidad hace que sea uno de losproductos típicos de Balears más conocido, básico en las acciones de promoción exterior dela Conselleria de Comerç del Govern de les Illes Balears y del Consell Insular de Menorca.

CARACTERÍSTICASEl queso de la DOP Mahón-Menorca es un alimento rico en proteínas (25%), de fácil

digestión y que aporta un alto valor energético. Contiene cantidades sustanciales devitaminas A y B, y de calcio, fósforo y magnesio.

Se elabora exclusivamente con leche de vaca, alimentada con pastos naturales de la isla.Se comercializa en dos tipos: Queso Mahón-Menorca y Queso Mahón-Menorca artesano.Este último, elaborado con leche cruda acabada de ordeñar, con la forma cuadrada caracte-rística de este queso, adquirida al embolsar la cuajada en un lienzo de algodón (fogasser encatalán), que le deja grabadas en la cara superior unas marcas características (mamella).

El Consejo Regulador certifica cada uno de los quesos amparados por la Denominaciónde Origen Protegida mediante una etiqueta numerada, que acredita su autenticidad ycalidad.

El curado de los quesos se realiza sobre estantes, en cavas subterráneas, untando lacorteza con aceite de oliva periódicamente y/o pimentón, lo que le proporciona su colorcaracterístico. El queso tierno (de maduración no superior a 60 días) ofrece un saborsuave, con un toque acídulo característico y es de color blanco amarillento, con la cortezapoco desarrollada.

El semicurado (de dos a cinco meses de maduración) permite disfrutar de un saborinconfundible, suave, ligeramente salado y ácido. Es un queso de pasta firme y notableelasticidad.

El curado (más de cinco meses de maduración) es de un sabor intenso y algo picante.Un placer para el amante del buen queso.

The possibility ofobserving the animals living in semi-captivity in a natural habitat has turned thisamazing nature part, situated just 20 kilometres from Santander, into a Europeanreference point. The Cabarceno Nature Park is housed in an ancient open-air minefull of spectacular Karst landscapes. It has, amongst other things, the largest gorillaenclosure in Spain and one of the largest in Europe.

CAVE PAINTINGSCantabria houses, in its interior, the largest density of cave paintings in the world.

Over 60 caves with cave paintings can be found here, turning it into an importantinternational reference point as far as Palaeolithic art is concerned. Ten of these caves(Altamira, El Castillo, Las Monedas, La Pasiega, Las Chimeneas, Covalanas, El Pendo,Hornos de la Peña, Chufín and La Garma), declared World Heritage Sites, are open tothe public.

caba de aterrizar en el mercado para afianzar el éxito de su hermano menor el nuevoNissan Qashqai+2, una variante más enfocada a la familia que se distingue fundamen-

talmente por contar con dos plazas traseras más y, por lo tanto, con un espacio de maleterode mayor capacidad, ya que las posibilidades de configuración de los asientos son muyamplias.

La imagen del Qashqai+2 está basada en la estética de la variante de cinco plazas pero,si lo miramos al detalle, existen muchas diferencias, ya que es más largo y también másalto muestra un parrilla completamente distinta, unos cristales laterales con una formadiferente, un gran techo panorámico de 14 centímetros y un nuevo portón trasero. Adicio-nalmente, el Qashqai+2 dispone de barras en el techo y de cristales traseros tintados deserie en todas las versiones.

Es realmente interesante el gran espacio que ofrece este mayor tamaño, ya quepodremos abatir tanto las dos nuevas plazas formando una superficie totalmente lisa comola segunda fila de asientos. Esto nos permitirá introducir objetos de gran tamaño o viajarcinco personas y tener, además, la posibilidad de ubicar muchas maletas u objetos en sumaletero.

Los motores disponibles para este Qashqai de siete plazas son cuatro. Dos de gasolina: un1.6 de 115 cv y un 2.0 de 140 cv y dos diésel: un 1.5 dCi de 106 cv y un 2.0 dCi de 150 cv.

in mind and can be distinguished from the previous model by the addition of tworear seats and improved boot and luggage space thanks to its numerous seatingconfigurations.

The new Qashqai+2 shares clear family design DNA with the original, but issubtly different from virtually every angle. Its wheelbase has been extendedincreasing its overall length. Its roofline has been lengthened and re-profiled inorder to increase the headroom. It has been fitted with a sleek new grille at thefront, restyled window frames, a huge panoramic glass roof and new rear door.Additionally, the Nissan Qashqai+2 has roof rails as standard and darkened privacyglass for all windows behind the front doors is also standard on all versions.

One of its main attractions is its spaciousness. Both the second and third rowof seats can be folded completely flat to increase luggage space. This permits theintroduction of large objects or, alternatively, the transport of five passengers withextra room in the boot area for carrying greater amounts of luggage or differenttypes of objects.

The new 7-seater Nissan Qashqai+2 offers a choice of two petrol, one 1.6-litreand one 2.0-litre (offering 115 and 140 bhp), and two diesel versions, one 1.5-litreand 2.0-litre (106 and 150 bhp).

Fábricas de coches en números rojos.Desplome en las matriculaciones. Caída de lasventas hasta el 10,5%. Y parece que, según

indican los expertos, España podría perdercasi un tercio de su producción.

Ésta es la radiografía actual del sector de laautomoción. Para paliar esta situación e intentarreflotar el mercado automovilístico, el GobiernoValenciano ha puesto en marcha el Plan PreverComunitat Valenciana 2009, una iniciativa quepretende incentivar el consumo de vehículos y asídinamizar la actividad económica, aumentarla producción y mantener el empleo en el sector.Además, gracias a esta medida, se modernizaráel parque automovilístico respetando al máximo elcuidado del medio ambiente, ya que para obtenerestas ayudas es necesario cumplir unos requisitosde eficiencia energética.

El Plan Prever Comunitat Valenciana 2009entró en vigor con carácter retroactivo a fecha8 de mayo y estará vigente hasta el próximo15 de diciembre. Con un presupuesto inicialde 15 millones de euros, pretende fomentar el usode vehículos con la concesión de ayudas directasde 1.000 euros para coches nuevos y 500 eurospara los usados. Además, estas subvencionesson compatibles con el Plan 2000E del GobiernoCentral, de manera que un valenciano que se acojaa ambos planes podrá recibir hasta 2.500 eurospara un coche nuevo y 2.000 euros parauno usado.

Son beneficiarios de este plan las personas físicaso jurídicas, mayores de edad, empadronadas enalgún municipio de la Comunitat. También puedenrecibirlas los trabajadores autónomos,los empresarios individuales y las sociedadesmercantiles calificadas como pymeso microempresas que ejerzan su actividaden el territorio valenciano.

El mecanismo de actuación es muy simple.Los compradores recibirán el descuento enel concesionario presentando la documentaciónrequerida. Será éste quien realice la rebajaen el precio final de venta y gestionará la solicitudde ayuda con la Generalitat que le reintegraráel importe del descuento.

DETALLES TÉCNICOS

Son subvencionables los turismos nuevoso de segunda mano con una antigüedad máximade cinco años cuyo precio no sea superior a los30.000 euros, impuestos incluidos. Los nuevos nodeberán sobrepasar una emisión de CO2 superiora 120 g/km3 o los 149 g/km3 con las mismascondiciones técnicas que recoge el Gobierno

Central. En el caso de los usados, el requisitoserá el anterior de no superar los cinco años deantigüedad.

El comprador deberá entregar un vehículoa cambio para desguace que tenga másde 10 años de antigüedad o más de 250.000kilómetros. Las empresas de compraventa deautomóviles deberán dar de baja obligatoriamenteel vehículo y llevarlo al desguace.

Si el comprador ha achatarrado un vehículoen los últimos seis meses tendrá que entregarel certificado. Siempre habrá que acreditarla propiedad del coche con anterioridad a la fechade vigencia de la orden. Quedan excluidasde este Plan las transacciones entre particulares.

Las cerca de 8.600 hectáreas de los Humedales del Sur de laprovincia de Alicante configuran un triángulo de reconocido valorambiental a nivel internacional. Los parques naturales de lasLagunas de la Mata y Torrevieja; el Hondo y las Salinas de SantaPola componen, junto con otras zonas húmedas menores (ElsBassars-Clot de Gavany; els Carrissars d’Elx o el Hondo deAmorós), este gran escenario de biodiversidad.

las poblaciones más importantes de Europa de especies como la Malvasía cabeciblanca ola Cerceta pardilla, que hallan en estas zonas húmedas las condiciones idóneas para sureproducción y supervivencia.

Las Lagunas de la Mata y Torrevieja es el humedal de mayores dimensiones, 3.708hectáreas, en los municipios de Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura y los Montesinos.

Las lagunas albergan flora y fauna de gran interés. Acogen uno de los mejores reductosde vegetación de saladar seco y húmedo de la Comunitat Valenciana. Además, no es difícilver alimentarse y descansar al flamenco (hasta 2.000 flamencos y 3.000 zampullines hanllegado a contabilizarse en el parque).

Algunas particularidades del humedal son desconocidas para el gran público. Pocossaben la explicación científica del color rosáceo de sus aguas, debido a una bacteriadenominada “arquea”. Este organismo posee una potente pigmentación rosada-roja queabsorbe los rayos solares y causa el efecto óptico de unas aguas teñidas de rosa.

Una ruta guiada por las lagunas permite comprobar su diversidad de ambientes. Unprimer punto de parada es el Acequión, un canal abierto artificialmente para que entre elagua del mar, donde se pueden observar cangrejos, algas, actinias, posidonias y peces.Desde el Acequión es posible avistar la vegetación de saladar. Una segunda parada para elvisitante es el Observatorio, que permite ver diferentes tipos de aves según la época delaño. Gaviotas, chorlitejos, cigüeñuelas, avocetas y charranes pueden avistarse siempre quese mantenga el silencio para no espantarlos.

Un tercer alto ha de realizarse en la Pinada, para observar los carrizos y los conjuntosde pino carrasco, pino piñonero y eucaliptos. También puede observarse una relevantezona de saladar. Finalmente, en el observatorio El Zampullín pueden contemplarse miles deestas aves que invernan en el parque natural, uno de los puntos de mayor concentración dela península ibérica.

El Parque Natural de las Lagunas de la Mata y Torrevieja acoge actividades muy diversaspara todos los públicos. Por ejemplo, jornadas de astronomía, en las que los participantespueden avistar Saturno, Venus y localizar la estrella polar a través de un telescopio. Porúltimo, cabe destacar que 12.400 personas visitaron en 2008 el parque.

Para los interesados en visitar el parque, el Centro de visitantes está emplazado enla antigua Casa Forestal de la pedanía de la Mata (Torrevieja), situada a unos 400 m. dela N-332 Alicante - Cartagena, en el kilómetro 64,5. El acceso al Centro de Visitantes serealiza desde la carretera nacional por un camino asfaltado.

Otra de las joyas del conjunto de los humedales del Sur es el Hondo. Ubicado en losmunicipios de Elche y Crevillente, las 2.387 hectáreas que lo conforman fueron declaradasparque natural en 1988. Además, del valor ambiental, este humedal genera significativosbeneficios económicos en el entorno.

Una de las rutas más interesantes por El Hondo es la circular que se inicia en el centrode visitantes. Gracias a una pasarela sobre el saladar, el visitante podrá observar en elarranque del itinerario avocetas (con su característico pico curvado hacia arriba), cigüe-ñuelas o ejemplares de chorlitejo patinegro.

En este recorrido adaptado a personas discapacitadas pueden encontrarse flamencos ensu hábitat natural, donde ha encontrado un entorno idóneo de tranquilidad durante todoel año. Otras especies son más difíciles de encontrar, como el tarro blanco, que sueleconcentrarse en las pequeñas islas del centro de las lagunas.

Una alternativa a este recorrido es realizar el itinerario ornitológico que se inicia en lasegunda elevación de la Comunidad de Riegos de Levante. Desde los observatoriospueden contemplarse muchas especies de anátidas entre las que destacan la Cerceta

H ome 14,760 aquatic bird species were registered in 2008 by the regional Ministryof the Environment in these southern wetlands. The wetland ecosystems provide

the ideal conditions for the reproduction and survival of some of Europe’s mostimportant populations of bird species that include the white-headed and marbledducks amongst others.

Situated in the Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura and Montesinos municipalities,the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja is, with a surface area of 3,708 hectares, theregion’s largest wetland area.

This extraordinary marsh area houses a wide variety of interesting flora and fauna.In fact, visitors will find here some of the best dry and wet salt marsh vegetation inthe Comunitat Valenciana. It is also possible to see numerous flamingos feeding andresting here (up to 2,000 flamingos and 3,000 grebes have been registered).

A number of peculiarities of which the public is generally unaware can also befound here. Not many people know, for example, that the scientific explanation forthe pinkish hue of the water here is caused by a microorganism known as ‘arquea’.This microorganism has a strong pinkish-red pigmentation which absorbs the sun’srays producing the optical illusion of pink dyed waters.

A guided tour of the marshes provides visitors with an excellent view of the area’smagnificent environmental diversity. The first stop on this tour is the Acequion, anartificial canal built to let in the seawater. Here visitors will find crabs, seaweed, seaanemone, posidonia and fish. It is also possible to see the salt marsh vegetation fromhere. The second stop is the Observatory where visitors will be able to observe thedifferent types of bird species depending on the season. Bird species include theseagull, plover, stork, avocet and tern amongst others.

The third stop takes place at the Pinada where visitors will be able to enjoy a viewof the reed beds and groups of Aleppo and stone pine and eucalyptus trees as wellas the salt marshes. From the observatory installed here, it is possible to observe theterns that migrate here for the winter. This area has the largest concentration of thisbird species in the Iberian Peninsula.

The Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja Nature Reserve offers activities aimed at allage groups. These activities include, for example, astronomy conferences during whichparticipants will be given the opportunity of seeing Saturn, Venus and the Pole starthrough a giant telescope. During 2008, a total 12,400 visitors visited this nature reserve.

The second southern wetland area mentioned is the Hondo Nature Reserve.Situated in the municipalities of Elche and Crevillente, it covers a surface area of 2,387hectares. It was officially declared a nature reserve in 1988. This area, in addition toits environmental value, provides significant economic benefits.

One of its most interesting routes is the circular route which begins at the Visitors’Centre. Visitors will, thanks to the footbridge built over the marshes, be able toobserve bird species such as the avocet (with its typical upward curved beak), storkand Kentish plover amongst others.

It is also possible to sight along this route, adapted for the disabled, numerousflamingos living in their natural habitat in an ideal all-year-round environment.Other species such as the common shelduck may be a little more difficult to sightsince these tend to group together in the small islands situated in the middle of themarshlands.

Respecto a la flora de El Hondo, cabe destacar que los embalses poseen un agua relativa-mente dulce. Por esta razón la vegetación sumergida es escasa. La formación dominante es elcarrizo, que rodea y coloniza las aguas poco profundas y, en ocasiones, alterna con juncos.

Un caso diferente es el de las charcas periféricas, constituidas por aguas rasas con altogrado de salinidad y, en general, de mayor calidad. Las formaciones de saladar acogen, entreotras especies, Limonium, Halocnemum, Suadea o Salicornia, una vegetación endémica delsureste peninsular.

Un total de 8.213 personas pasaron en 2008 por el Centro de Visitantes de El Hondo,ubicado en el término municipal de Crevillent, muy cerca de la pedanía de San Felipe Neri.De la “Finca el Rincón” (sede del centro) parte una ruta en bicicleta (“Azarbes de Dalt y delConvenio”), de 15 kilómetros ida y vuelta, que llega hasta dos observatorios en la charcade la reserva.

Las Salinas de Santa Pola es el Parque Natural que cierra el triángulo de los humedalesdel sur. Este humedal que comprende parte de los términos de Santa Pola y Elche seextiende a lo largo de casi 2.500 hectáreas. Las actuales salinas y el espacio que hoyconstituye El Hondo conformaban antiguamente una gran zona húmeda conocida como laalbufera de Elche.

La extracción de la sal es la actividad económica medular de la zona y, en gran medida,conforma el ecosistema actual. La gran transformación de este espacio natural se produceentre finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando la instalación de las explotacionessalineras ocasionó la adaptación, relleno y excavación del terreno para la construcción delas balsas.

La actividad salinera y los ecosistemas se benefician mutuamente en el Parque Natural.De hecho, las aves se alimentan de los peces e invertebrados que penetran en las salinas,mientras que la producción salinera se beneficia de la riqueza mineral aportada en losexcrementos por la avifauna.

Una de las rutas posibles que el visitante puede recorrer es la de Playa Tamarit, de treskilómetros. Se trata de una zona totalmente plana con ambientes diferenciados de playa ysaladar. El camino parte de las instalaciones de las Salinas de Braç del Port, pasa cerca delas montañas de sal y permite observar algunos de los trabajos de explotación. Durantetodo el itinerario puede disfrutarse de una amplia panorámica desde el Cabo de Santa Pola,las sierras de Elche y Crevillente, el Maigmó, la Sierra de Callosa y la isla de Tabarca.

Otra alternativa es la ruta de El Pinet, de dos kilómetros por la parte sureste del parque,que permite observar algunos de los más ambientes más representativos de las Salinas: elsaladar y el ecosistema dunar. El itinerario parte de las antiguas balsas salineras hoy endesuso. Durante el recorrido son frecuentes las poblaciones de flamencos, avocetas,cigüeñuelas, garcetas comunes, chorlitejos, agujas colinegras y charrancitos.

Es asimismo una buena oportunidad para encontrarse con la fauna de la zona, enconcreto, reptiles como el lagarto ocelado, la lagartija coliroja, la lagartija colilarga, laculebra bastarda; mamíferos como la musaraña, ratones de campo, conejos y liebres, entreotros.

Para hacerse una idea de lo que uno puede hallar en Las Salinas, es recomendable unavisita al Centro de Interpretación, en el edificio del Museo de la Sal de Santa Pola. 47.310personas pasaron por el centro en el año 2008.

Alternatively, visitors may prefer to take the Ornithological Route beginning on thesecond rise of the Comunidad de Riegos de Levante. It is possible to see fromthe nearby observatories numerous duck species amongst which we would mentionthe marbled and white-headed ducks.

As far as the El Hondo Nature Reserve’s flora is concerned, we would mention thatthe water in the reservoirs here is relatively sweet. It is for this reason, that visitorswill find very little underwater vegetation. The area is made up mainly of beds of reedswhich surround and colonise the shallow waters alternating, on occasions, with bedsof bulrushes.

In the surrounding pools, however, made up of flat waters of greater quality andwith a higher grade of salinity, visitors will find a variety of plant species endemic tothe southeast that include Limonium, Halocnemum, Suadea and Salicornia.

A total of 8,213 visitors visited, during 2008, the El Hondo Visitors’ Centre, situatedin the municipality of Crevillente, close to an area known as San Felipe Neri.A 15 kilometre round trip bicycle route (“Azarbes de Dalt y del Convenio”) is availableat the “Finca el Rincon” (headquarters of the centre) with access to two of theobservatories situated in the marshlands.

The Salinas de Santa Pola Nature Reserve completes the southern wetland triangle.Situated in the municipalities of Santa Pola and Elche, this salt marsh area covers2,500 hectares. The present day salt marshes cover a wetland area known previouslyas the Albufera de Elche.

Salt mining is the main economic activity of this area and makes up, to a greatextent, the present ecosystem. The transformation of this nature area took place atthe end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century when the land wasconverted into a salt producing area.

The salt mining activities taking place here and the local ecosystems benefit oneand another inasmuch as the nature reserve bird species feed off the fish andinvertebrates that find their way into the salt flats, whilst the salt production benefitsfrom the minerals produced by the bird excrements produced.

Its routes include the 3 kilometre Playa Tamarit Route made up of a flat area withmarked beach and salt marsh areas. The route begins at the installations of theSalinas de Braç del Port passing close to the mountains of salt enabling visitors toobserve some of the mining installations. Visitors are offered here a variety ofpanoramic views of the Cabo de Santa Pola, the sierras of Elche and Crevillente, theMaigmo, the Sierra de Callosa and the Island of Tabarca.

Alternatively, visitors might like to try the 2 kilometre El Pinet Route that runs alongthe southeast part of the reserve where they will find some of the area’s mostcharacteristic views: salt marshes and sand dunes. This interesting route begins at theold salt pools presently in disuse. Here visitors will be able to observe bird species suchas the flamingo, avocet, stork, little egret, plover, black-tailed godwit and little tern.

Here visitors will also have the opportunity of observing the local fauna thatincludes, amongst other things, reptiles such as the ocellated lizard, long tailed lizardand Montpellier snake and mammals such as the shrew, field mouse, rabbit and hare.

Whilst here, we would suggest visitors pay a visit to the Interpretation Centre whichthey will find housed in the Santa Pola Salt Museum. A total of 47,310 visitors visitedthe centre during 2008.

S AIR NOSTRUM cierra la renovación de su flotaAIR NOSTRUM ha cerrado dos acuerdos con sus principales proveedores

aeronáuticos para la renovación de su flota. El Salón Internacional de la Aero-náutica y del Espacio de París-Le Bourget ha sido el escenario escogido parala firma de los acuerdos con Bombardier y ATR, por los que AIR NOSTRUMincorporará en los próximos años15 nuevos reactores CRJ1000 deBombardier y 10 turbohélices ATR72-600, destinados a la progresiva susti-tución de las aeronaves 50 plazas.Estas adquisiciones se suman a los20 reactores incluidos en el acuerdofirmado en 2007 con Bombardier yconvierten a AIR NOSTRUM en elcliente de lanzamiento del CRJ1000,del que dispondrá en su flota de 35unidades en 2016.

El consejero delegado de AIRNOSTRUM, Carlos Bertomeu, subrayóla importancia de estas incorpo-raciones con las que se pretendedar respuesta a los nuevos retos delmercado aéreo. “Necesitamos unanueva flota de aviones de últimageneración, de mayor tamaño y efi-ciencia energética por pasajero,que nos siga manteniendo como lacompañía aérea regional con la flotamás moderna de Europa y estamosactuando para evolucionar hacia unmodelo más eficiente con el quegarantizar el futuro de la compañía eneste nuevo escenario”.

El CRJ1000 es el avión regionalmás moderno del mercado. Concapacidad para 100 pasajeros, suavanzada tecnología y sus presta-ciones –entre las que destaca elrespeto al medio ambiente– lo convierten en el reactor más eficiente de susegmento. Por su parte, los nuevos ATR72 presentan un mayor confort en lacabina de pasajeros y mejoras en la eficiencia de sus motores, lo que hace deeste modelo el avión con menor consumo de combustible y de emisiones deCO2 de la aviación regional.

De este modo, AIR NOSTRUM contará en 2016 con una flota de 55 avionesmás modernos y de mayor capacidad que los 68 actuales, ofreciendo a suspasajeros un número total de plazas más elevado.

for the renovation of its aircraft fleet. The Paris Air Show (Salon Internationalde l’Aeronautique et de l’Espace) was the scenario chosen for signing theagreements between AIR NOSTRUM and Bombardier and ATR, respectively,

for the incorporation, over the nextfew years, of 15 new BombardierCRJ1000 NextGen regional jets and10 ATR72-600 turboprop aircraft.These new aircraft have been acquiredto progressively replacethe Company’s50-seater regional aircraft. They have,together with the 20 regional aviationjets included in the agreement withBombardier signed in 2007, turnedAIR NOSTRUM into a proud launchcustomer for the new CRJ1000 aircraft.The Company will be incorporating atotal of 35 units by 2016.

The Chief Executive Officer of AIRNOSTRUM, Mr. Carlos Bertomeu,underlined the importance of theincorporation of these new aircraftpurchased to meet the new aviationmarket challenges. “We need anewer, larger and more modern,environmentally friendly aircraft fleetthat will allow us to maintain ourpresent position as the regionalaviation company with the most up-to-date aircraft fleet in Europe. Weare working towards a more efficientbusiness model with which we areable to guarantee the future of theCompany in this new scenario”.

The CRJ1000 NextGen regionaljet is the most advanced regionaljet on the market. With a seating

capacity for 100 passengers, its state-of-the-art technology and numerousbenefits -including environmental advantages- turns it into one of the mostefficient jets in its market segment. On the other hand, the new ATR72turboprop aircraft offers greater passenger cabin comfort and improved engineperformance turning it into the regional aviation aircraft with the lowest levelsof fuel consumption and gas emissions in the sector.

Thanks to the agreements signed in Paris, AIR NOSTRUM will, by 2016,have a modern, high capacity aircraft fleet of 55 aircraft units compared to itpresent 68 aircraft unit aircraft fleet.
