In today’s Gospel we hear that only one of those healed returned to glorify God and to give thanks to God. It is true, that when we have a grateful heart we know that everything is a gift from God. To give thanks for all that God has given to you, have you considered answering the call to help serve the poor by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?

Seek refuge in the name

of the Lord

The Feast of All Saints on Nov. 1st commemorates Christians who lived ex-traordinary lives of service or who were killed in defense of the faith. In the eyes of the Church, these self-less acts of sacrifice attest to a person’s love of God above all else. This kind of agape love is seen as sufficient to cleanse the soul of any minor or “venial” sins. Therefore, at the moment of their death, these holy ones or “saints” are said to enter heaven immediately. But what about the souls of ordinary Christians who die each year without being perfectly cleansed of venial sin or who have not atoned for minor transgressions? Do they deserve to be deprived of heaven forever? No. The church teaches that un-repented serious sins are “mortal” or dead-ly in a spiritual sense. That is to say they will permanently separate us from the love of God (this is what we call Hell). But un-repented venial sins can be forgiven by

God, even after a person’s death. This time for a final “purging” of sin before a soul enters heaven is the basis of the doctrine of Purgatory. Early Christians were heirs to the Jew-ish belief in the resurrection of the dead. This included a conviction that the prayers of the living could benefit the dead. The Old Testament recounts a story of a battle 160 years before Jesus was born, in which Judah Maccabee prays and offers sacrifice for his dead companions who had commit-ted the sin of idolatry: “For if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death” (II Maccabees 12:44). In the early Church, the names of the faithful departed were posted in churches so the community would remember them in prayer (a practice we still maintain in every Mass during the Prayers of the Faith-ful and especially during the month of No-

vember by displaying the book of the dead, which lists all deceased members of our local church). However, for the first 1,000 years of Christianity there was no univer-sal day of memorial for these souls in Pur-gatory. In the 7th century, monasteries were celebrating an annual Mass for all the de-ceased of their order. Then, around 1040 A.D., the Abbot of Cluny decreed that all of the Cluniac monasteries should offer prayers and chant the psalms of the Office of the Dead for all of the souls in Purgato-ry on the day after the Feast of All Saints. This idea spread to Benedictine and Car-thusian monks and soon, Nov. 2nd was formally established as the Feast of All Souls for the whole Church. Next week, we will look at the customs of the Feasts of All Saints and All Souls.

Love Can Make The “Unwanted Child” Wanted! “Love declares that there is no such thing as an unwanted child....With love, children are adopted, not aborted. With love, chil-dren are cherished, not abused. With love, there is less room for the oppressor because his hunting grounds are smaller....We simply need to see no child as unwanted.... And it can start with just one. One life loved can make all the difference. After all, one life changed the en-tire world." Alveda King, niece of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. King.

In the past few years, many have adopted the practice of keeping a gratitude journal. Sometimes, the journal-keeper uses a book that in-cludes prompts that guide the user’s reflection. Others simply keep a list or write brief reflec-tions at the end of their day or week, recognizing the many things for which they are grateful. The action of seeking out the blessings of life creates a habit of attentive-ness. We see what we seek. When we look for things for which to be grate-ful, we realize that we are surround-ed by blessings. This is not only a

good practice for our emotional health and well-being. Recognizing our blessings and growing in grati-tude for them is a deeply spiritual

practice, through which we become attentive to God’s presence and action in our lives. Gratitude can truly be a life-changer for us. As we grow in grati-tude, we view the world through the perspective of abundance rather than scarcity.

Without the habit of gratitude, we take things for granted. We get caught in an endless cycle of wanting more, rather than seeing all that we have.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
