Australian National University A chair and department of genetics has been set up within the John Curtin School of Medical Research, and Prof. David Catcheside, F.R.S., is to be the first occupant of the new chair. Professor Catcheside, who is 56, has been professor of microbiology in the University of Birmingham since 1956. From 1952 until 1955 he was professor of genetics in the University of Adelaide. He held a visiting professorship at the California Institute of Technology in 1961. He was educated at the Strand School and the University of London, and he has also held teaching appointments in the Univer- sities of Glasgow, London, and Cambridge. He was elected F.R.S. in 1951. He is the author of a book entitled the Genetics of Micro- organisms. Society of Apothecaries of London Faculty of the History of Medicine and Pharmacy.-Entries for the 1964 Maccabaeari prize and medal are invited for an essay of 5000-7000 words on some aspect of the history of medicine or pharmacy. Royal Medical Benevolent Fund The annual general meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 5 P.M., at the house of the Medical Society of London, 11, Chandos Street, London, W.I. Farmer’s Lung Mr. Niall Macpherson, Minister of Pensions and National Insurance, has asked the Industrial Injuries Advisory Council to consider whether farmer’s lung should be a prescribed disease under the National Insurance (Industrial Injuries) Acts and, if so, for what occupations. Biological Engineering Research The Medical Research Council has given the department of mechanical engineering of the Royal College of Science and Technology of Glasgow E50,000 for biological engineering research. For the past six years teams drawn from the college’s engineering laboratories and in Glasgow’s teaching hospitals have been studying the applications of refrigeration in hypothermia and skin tensions. This coopera- tion has led to the creation of a College-based biological engineering unit under the direction of Dr. R. M. Kenedi. The unit is investigating the structural and mechanical properties of human tissue, the engineering principles underlying theii function, and their influence on therapy. It has also helped to develop instruments ranging from specialised surgical tools to electric analogues. British Medical Association The annual clinical meeting of this Association will be held at Stoke-on-Trent from Oct. 17 to 20. Wellcome Trust Dr. F. H. K. Green, after eight years’ service, is retiring from his position as scientific secretary of the Trust on Aug. 31. Dr. P. 0. Williams, deputy scientific secretary, will be acting as scientific secretary from that date. International Union of Railway Medical Services Congress This congress will be held at Weimar from Sept. 23 to 27. The subject for discussion will be the medical officer’s part in the prevention of accidents and illnesses connected with the work of railwaymen. British Railways will be represented by Dr. G. E. Graves Peirce and Dr. A. H. Jones, who will read a paper on the industrial medical approach to ergonomics. International Course in Health Development Postgraduate courses are to be given by the Belgian and Netherlands Institutes for Tropical Health, the Netherlands Universities Foundation for International Cooperation, and the Belgian Office for Development Cooperation at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam from February to July, 1964, and at the Institute for Tropical Health " Prins Leopold " in Antwerp from February to July, 1965.
