My name is Matthew Pruitt and I work as a plumber for Retro for almost 3 years. I am married and have three kids. I am here because I got hired here and I decided to stay. I like what I do here and I am grateful I was given a chance. In class I am learning direct vent water heater along with having the responsibility to do a job on my own with some help here and there.

Something I like about the Apprenticeship program is some things we over look in the field, we note in the class as far as terms used or codes. My favorite sport and hobby is fishing. When I have some time I like to spend time with my wife and kids. My goal is to buy a house for my family and to be here for a while. Something people would never guess about me is that I listen to Christian music. Something I would have liked to know the day I started here was how much I would have enjoyed doing this kind of work.

The lesson I would share with other people is how important it is to be safe and organized and how important it is to look ahead and not leave things for the next guy. One person that has inspired me at work is Doug my Supervisor. He always takes the time to teach and is very knowledgeable. Something I am grateful for is the people in my life; my family, my job and the trade.

Matthew Pruitt

My name is Nathan Reed and I work as an HVAC installer for almost 4 years. I am married and have three kids and one on the way. I am here to gain knowledge that can benefit me on moving forward in this company.

Also to gain the proper information that can make me successful here and in life. Something I like about the Apprenticeship Program is the confidence it gives me from knowing more about my career. My favorite sport is basketball and my hobbies are reading, spending time with members of my congregation.

I love to watch movies, attend events with family and read when I have time. My goal is to better myself as a person so one day I can pass it on to kids. Something people would never guess about me is I study to read and speak Quranic Arabic. One thing I knew the day I started here was that there are people here I can trust.

I have always been the type to organize things. I love finding ways to make things more streamlined, efficient and coordinated. As a small child I would line up all my toys in size order and to this day all my clothes are hung in ROYGBIV. With all of the Lean changes happening at Villara, it motivated me to tackle something that has bugged me for a while… my garage.

Ever since I watched Home Improvement as a child, I wanted a garage that was not only clean, but laid out well and organized enough to make finding what I need while working on projects a breeze. To be able to visually see exactly what I needed and be able to grab it and easily put it back was something I fantasized about. My house even had a peg board already mounted in the garage but it was never accessible.

When my ex-husband lived with me, we had a mere walking path through the garage. Boxes and bags stacked up high kept you from even navigating the space. After several years of sorting, cleaning, purging and organizing; I was finally able to park my car in the garage but it was still not the workshop I envisioned.

For the past few months I have been Sorting, Straightening and Sweeping my home, yards and garage; and it has seen vast improvement! This past weekend I held a garage sale to rid myself of a ton of stuff and went out and

bought items to help me move on to the Standardize phase. I was SO excited to hang my tools, sort my shelf items and organize loose stuff into boxes to be easily pulled out to access their contents. EVERYTHING HAD A PLACE AND IT WAS IN IT!

I’m not done yet, need to get more hangers for tools (and more tools), want to Sort some more and I may even create some shadow boards to help me Sustain my efforts with greater ease. All of this will also lead to increased Safety and time savings when I am working on projects and need to find specific items. I wish I had some “before” pics to share but at least I have some midway ones to be proud of.

While I’m not done, I feel like Al Borland and Tim Taylor would give me a pat on the back. They may also suggest that I need more power and that I have room for a table saw now…..they would not be wrong :)

Has Lean followed you home as well? Tell us how you have implemented Lean efforts outside of work! Send info and/or photos to Jennifer Savage at [email protected] so we can share your success.

With the phenomenal March results, we moved up from an already awesome 187% of annual goal up to an amazing 198% of our annual Pre-Bonus Operating Income goal. In our bonus meetings we talked about how we could follow up last year’s great bonus results with another great year, and so far we’re very much on track to do so.

So that was our “first-half” game results: we battled through a very tough, wet winter and yet finished the half with a huge, commanding lead. What about the 2nd half of the game (our year?).

April billing just closed, and we actually outperformed our Plan slightly, which is a big turn-around from March’s large short-fall. With strong billing, April should generate strong profits to add to our total above. We are projecting a very large miss in May billing, however, and June and July projections are also lagging our Plan revenue goals. So from May on we face a continuing revenue shortfall that will make it much harder to generate the Plan profits, let along double up on them as we’ve been able to do through the first half.

So how do we win the 2nd half? The good news: while June and July projections are below Plan, they are in alignment with our April pace and well above our March pace, so it all comes down to execution. We’ve been working on “Lean” improvements during the winter months, and if we can actually perform more work with our same crews due to efficiency improvements, we can generate strong profits even on below-plan revenue billing, just as we accomplished in March.

Do you smell victory? I do: let’s keep up the great work and deliver another great year of financial results and personal rewards, as we did in 2018. (Unless you insist on doing even better in 2019!)

Thank you again for “bringing it” every day!

Building People, Building Trust, Building Dreams --- together!

Greetings Villarans!

Don’t you love the long days of

sunlight! I love summer, and it is

coming!

We just wrapped up our March

financial results, which is exactly

the mid-point of our fiscal year, so

with half the year “in the books”,

how are we doing?

In a word: AWESOME! First, let’s

talk about March. As has been

the case the last few months,

the long winter rains have led to

lower billing numbers, as builders

have not been able to start

as many homes. March is our

biggest revenue miss so far this

year, with final revenue coming

in 6% below our Plan. That always

makes profits harder to come by,

at least for most teams.

NOT THIS TEAM! You guys smoked

it! March profits came in almost

3 times what our Plan called for.

Not only was it an incredible

month for a winter month, but it

was an incredible month for any

month of the year.

WAY TO GO, TEAM VILLARA!
