Tomorrow we

are going on a

nature hike,

announced Mr.

Nuggin.

Hooray!the excited

students

chorused.

Its very important that

everyone gets a good nights

sleep before we leave, Mr.

Nuggin explained. Were

going to leave early in the

morning, and youll need a lot

of energy for the hike.

On the way home from schoolWesley and his friends talked

about the hike.

Im going to stay awake all

night! Wesley exclaimed.

That way Ill be the first one

ready.

Thats a silly idea, said Suds.

If you dont sleep tonight,

youll be very tired tomorrow,

said Crispin.

No, I wont, answered

Wesley. Ill show you.

-Maana vamos de

excursin a la montaa -

anunci don Aniceto.

-Yupi! -corearon

emocionados todos los

alumnos.

-Es muy importante que

esta noche todos

descansen bien -prosigui

el profesor-. Partiremos

temprano, y tienen que

llenarse de energas para

la caminata.

Cuando volvan a su casa,

Yago y sus amigos fueron

hablando de la excursin.

-Voy a pasarme toda la

noche despierto! -

exclam Yago-. As ser

el primero que estar

listo.

-Qu tontera! -dijo

Pompita.

-Si no duermes, maana

estars muy cansado -le

advirti Patricio.

-Qu va! -contest Yago.

Ya vers.

Aquella noche, cuando todos los

dinosaurios se acostaron, Yago se

esforz por permanecer despierto.

Se qued leyendo todo el tiempo

que pudo. Luego se pase

silenciosamente por la guaridamientras su familia dorma.

Tambin se

prepar algo

de comer, se

dijo cuentos a

s mismo yhasta intent

contar todas

las estrellas

del cielo, aunque

siempre se

confunda y

tena que

volver a

empezar.

Al clarear

Yago salt de la cama y se

apresur a alistar sus cosas.-Buenos das, Yago -lo salud su

madre-. Tan temprano y ya ests

despierto. Dormiste bien? Por lo

que nos ha dicho don Aniceto, la

caminata de hoy va a ser bastante

larga.

That night when all the other

dinosaurs went to sleep, Wesley

did his best to stay awake. He

read for as long as he possibly

could. He crept around the den

when his family was asleep. Healso got himself some food to

snack on.

Wesley told

himself

stories. He

even tried tocount all the

stars in the

sky, though

he always

seemed to

lose count

and would

have to

start again.

As the sun

crept over the horizon, Wesley

jumped out of bed and hurried toget his stuff together.

Good morning, Wesley, his

mother said. Youre up bright

and early. Did you sleep well?

From what Mr. Nuggin told your

father and me, your hike todayis going to be quite a big one.

jact Yago al ver a sus amigos-, y

-No creo! -

Yago.

Una vez

reunidos los

excursionistas,

don Aniceto

estableci

algunas reglas.

Luego hizo

una oracinpara que Dios

los protegiera.

Despus de

eso, partieron.

Al principio

Yago iba a la

cabeza. Sin embargo, con el

transcurrir de la maana comenz

a quedarse atrs. La senda fue

ponindose cada vez ms

empinada, y Yago con frecuencia

bostezaba y se quedaba sinaliento.

Im ready before you guys,

Wesley boasted when he saw his

friends. And I stayed up all

night long!

Youre going to get tired,

Suds said.

I dont think

so! replied

Wesley.

When the group

of hikers hadgathered, Mr.

Nuggin set a few

rules and then

said a prayer for

their

safekeeping.They were

ready to set off.

At first, Wesley

was right at

the front of

the group of

hikers. However, as the

morning wore on, Wesley started

to fall to the back of the group.

The mountain path got steeper

and steeper, and Wesley was

often yawning and out of breath.

With each step, Wesleys legs felt

heavier and heavier. The higher

hey climbed, the colder Wesley

elt. He put on both his sweaters,

but he still couldnt get warm.

Wheres

Wesley? Mr.

Nuggin asked a

hort while

ater. Everyone

ooked back

down thepath; Wesley

was nowhere

o be seen.

After several

minutes of

earching,

hey found

Wesley curled

up at the base

of a large tree.

He was shivering, and his eyes

were tired and droopy.

Are you okay, Wesley? Mr.

Nuggin asked.

Wesley yawned. When he tried

o stand, his legs were shaky. He

was completely exhausted andouldnt hike any further.

Yago senta las piernas cada vez

ms pesadas. Mientras ms

suban, ms fro tena. Aunque se

Al cabo de

unos minutos

lo encontraron

acurrucado al

pie de un

rbol grande.

Estaba tiritando, y los ojos se le

cerraban por el cansancio.

-Yago, te encuentras bien? -

pregunt el profesor.

Yago bostez. Cuando trat de

ponerse en pie, las piernas no le

respondieron. Estaba exhausto, yno poda seguir.

Oh

dear, it

to headback home, Mr.

Nuggin said.

But Mr. Nuggin, we

havent made it to the topyet, Crispin said.

I know. But I dont think

Wesley will be able to

make it any further. Well

have to head back, and

perhaps try this climb againanother time.

The group of hikers sadly

turned back down the

mountain and made their

way home. Wesley had to

ride on Mr. Nuggins back,

as he was too weak to walk.

For several days Wesley

was sick in bed. He had

caught a nasty cold

because he was tired, run-down, and chilled.

-Vaya, parece que vamos

a tener que dar la vuelta -

dijo don Aniceto.

-Pero, profesor, an no

hemos llegado a la cima-protest Patricio.

-Ya lo s. Pero no creo

que Yago pueda

continuar. Tendremos

descenso. Don Aniceto

tuvo que llevar a cuestas

a Yago, pues estaba muy

dbil para caminar.

Yago tuvo que estar

varios das en cama.

Pill un catarro bien feoporque se enfri cuando

estaba cansado y dbil.

I think Crispin and Suds are

upset at me, Wesley told his

mother one evening, when she

came to check in on him.

Why is that? his motherasked.

Because I

ruined the

hike. You see,

I I lied

when I said Islept well the

night before

our hike. I

actually

stayed up

all night. Ithought that

Id be more

ready for

the hike.

Well, that

explains whyyou got so tired and sick, his

mother said. Your body didnt

have the energy for the hike, or

even to keep you warm, so you

got chilled.

-Creo que Patricio y Pompita

estn enojados conmigo -le confi

una noche a su mam cuando ella

lo fue a ver a su habitacin.

-Por qu? -pregunt ella.-Porque les ech a perder la

caminata.

Vers, yo...

te ment

cuando te

dije quehaba dormido

bien la noche

anterior. En

realidad me

pas toda la

noche envela. Pens

que as estara

mejor

preparado

para la

excursin...

-Bueno, eso explica por qu

terminaste tan cansado y te

enfermaste -observ su madre-. A

tu cuerpo le faltaron energas para

caminar tanto. Ni siquiera pudo

mantener su temperatura normal,y te resfriaste.

Im so sorry,

Wesley said

with tears in his

eyes. If I had

known this was

going to happen,I wouldnt have stayed up all

night. Instead, I wouldve

gone to sleep.

Im sure you would have,

but sometimes you need to

obey even though you dontunderstand all the reasons.

A couple of weeks later, Mr.

Nuggin said they were going

to try to climb the mountain

again, and reminded everyone

to have a good a nights

sleep.

Wesley went home, and asked

his parents if he could go to

bed earlier than normal. Hewanted to be fit and ready for

the hike. The next day Wesley

was full of energy, and

wasnt tired at all. The group

made it to the top of the

mountain and back without

any problems.

-Lo siento mucho -

reconoci Yago con

lgrimas en los ojos-. Si

hubiera sabido que iba a

pasar esto, no me habra

quedado toda la nochedespierto. Habra dormido

bien.

-Claro, pero a veces

conviene obedecer a los

mayores aunque no

entiendas lo que te mandanhacer.

Un par de semanas ms

tarde, don Aniceto anunci

que iban a subir otra vez a

la montaa y les record a

todos que descansaran

bien.

Cuando Yago lleg a su

casa, les dijo a sus padres

que se quera acostar muypronto a fin de estar fuerte

y bien preparado para la

excursin. Al da siguiente

se senta lleno de energas,

y no se cans. El grupo

lleg hasta la cima y

regres sin contratiempos.

Moraleja:

Para gozar de buena salud tu cuerpo requiere ciertos cuidados. Si

duermes bien y comes bien sers menos propenso a las enfermedades.

Moral:

Your body needs proper care in order to stay healthy. If you sleep welland eat well, you will be less likely to get sick.
