A mediados de marzo, las Fiestas de la Independencia, que cobran cada año más popularidad, conmemoran la segregación de Benalup, en 1991, del municipio de Medina Sidonia. En julio tiene lugar la tradicional Feria y Fiestas de Santiago y Santa Ana. El recinto ferial cuenta con un espléndido parque de atracciones, caseta municipal y de la juventud, así como muchísimas otras particularidades. Una de las últimas celebraciones del año es la del 15 de agosto, cuando sale en procesión la patrona de Benalup, Nuestra Señora del Socorro. Chirigotas (carnival groups which sing satirical songs), comparsas (organised groups who parade through the streets in costume) and quartets - along with the enthusiastic participation of the locals - enliven Benalup's Carnival celebrations, which run for two weeks in February. Taking place in mid-March, the Fiestas de la Independencia (Celebration of Independence) - commemorating Benalup's separation from the district of Medina Sidonia in 1991 - are becoming more popular every year. The traditional Feria y Fiestas de Santiago y Santa Ana (Santiago and Santa Ana Fair and Festival) are held in July. The fair grounds feature a magnificent amusement park, youth and community pavilions, as well as many other features. One of the last celebrations of the year is the procession of the patron saint of Benalup, Nuestra Señora del Socorro (Our Lady of Help), held on 15th August. Las pinturas rupestres y las tumbas antropomorfas excavadas en las rocas del peñón del Tajo de las Figuras demuestran el tempranísimo poblamiento de estas tierras. Durante la dominación musulmana Benalup sirvió como enclave militar estratégico. De esta época es su torre-castillo, de estilo mudéjar, y conocida como la Morita. Entre sus monumentos arquitectónicos destaca la iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro, levantada en 1915 gracias a donativos de los lugareños. El Mirador del Parque, conocido como del Tajo de la Sima, nos proporciona bellísimas panorámicas y supone un excelente punto de observación de millares de aves migratorias. Otro elemento importante es el embalse del Celemín, con áreas de acampada y numerosas vías pecuarias. The cave paintings found here, along with the anthropomorphic tombs carved into the rock of the Tajo de las Figuras (the cleft of the Figures), are evidence of how early this region was settled by man. Under Moorish rule, Benalup served as a strategic military stronghold. Its Mudéjar-style tower-castle - known as La Morita - originates from this era. Of interest among the architectural monuments here is the church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, built in 1915 using donations made by the local people. El Mirador del Parque (the Park Viewpoint) - commonly called El Tajo de la Sima (the Cleft of the Abyss) Viewpoint - affords spectacular panoramic views and makes an excellent place to observe the thousands of migratory birds which congregate in the region. Another important feature in the area is the Celemín reservoir, which boasts campgrounds and numerous livestock trails. Su término se adentra en el Parque Natural de los Alcornocales y en la antigua laguna de La Janda. En la parte alta, llamada la Mesa, se encuentra el acebuchal, acompañado de arbustos como el lentisco, la carrasca, el majoleto, la olivilla, el espino negro o el sanguino, y de la única palmera europea, el palmito. En cuanto a la avifauna, podemos encontrar rapaces como el águila perdicera, la culebrera, la calzada, el ratonero, el buitre leonado, el alimoche, el búho real, la lechuza, el carabo o el cernícalo. En la parte baja encontramos la campiña, por donde discurren el Barbate y el Celemín. Durante el invierno se suele encharcar por las lluvias, convirtiéndose así en lugar de reunión de aves acuáticas y zancudas como los ánades y garzas reales, cigüeñas blancas, fochas comunes, somormujos, lavancos, avefrías, grullas, sisones, alcaravanes o chorlitos. The district of Benalup crosses into Los Alcornocales Natural Park and into the area of the old La Janda lagoon. The upper zone - known as La Mesa - is covered by a forest of wild olive accompanied by shrubs like mastic, holm oak, hawthorn, shrubby germander, blackthorn and dogwood as well as the only European species of palm tree - the European fan palm. Bird-life includes birdsof prey such as the Bonelli´s eagle, the short-toed eagle, the booted eagle, the buzzard, the griffon vulture, the Egyptian vulture, the eagle owl, the common owl, the tawny owl and the kestrel. Field-lands are found in the lower zone, through which the Barbate and Celemín rivers flow. Winter rains normally leave areas of standing water in this area turning it into a meeting place for waterfowl and wading birds like ducks and grey herons, white storks, coots, grebes, wild ducks, lapwings, cranes, little bustards, stone curlews and plovers. Nature's generous contribution is evident in the cuisine of Benalup, which often includes asparagus, thistle, snails, cabrillas (milk snails), rabbit, hare, partridge, venison, etc. These ingredients - complemented by those which have been incorporated over time such as pheasant and pork - form the basis of the local fare. Rural inns are very typical in the region and still serve the same dishes that they always have. With part of its territory found in the western countryside and the other part in the Sierra de Cádiz, the municipal district is divided in- to three zones: La Mesa (the Plateau), an extensive area of wild olive and mastic with abundant wildlife -located where the La Janda lagoon was once found; La Sierra (mountain range), where cork oaks cover the landscape; and La Vega del Barbate (the Barbate Plain), a region dedicated primarily to agriculture. The community of Benalup is situa- ted on the slopes found between La Mesa Baja (the Lower Plateau) and La Vega del Barbate. In this re- gion of great ecological and strate- gic significance, an important cul- ture began to develop at the end of the Palaeolithic Era, leaving one of the most valuable prehistoric lega- cies in all of Spain. Of special inte- rest among the archaeological re- mains found here are the cave paintings, a group of burial sites dating from the Neolithic or the Metal Ages, and some megalithic Tartessian caves. The town was founded in the 19th century and was a dependency of Medina Sidonia until not long ago. The name Benalup origina- tes from a tower built by the Moors which was used for defen- sive and agricultural purposes. The tower was given the name of "Ben a lup", which historians ha- ve translated as "son of the wolf". It is now known as La Morita and constitutes one of the town's most emblematic monu- ments. Also of great interest is the church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro, built in 1930. Benalup - Casas Viejas is one of the unavoidable stopping points on the famous "Ruta del Toro" (Route of the Bull), a scenic route through the countryside which gives visitors the chance to see fighting-bulls in their natural habitat in districts as San José del Valle, Medina Sidonia, Paterna de Rivera and Alcalá de los Gazules. This districts feature some of the most famous cattle ranches; however, in the area of the sierra it is deer farming which predominates. This makes for an impressive spectacle during the month of September, rutting season for these animals. Con parte de su territorio incluido en la Campiña Occidental y parte en la Sierra de Cádiz, el término munici- pal benalupense se divide geográ- ficamente en tres zonas: la mesa - una gran área de acebuches y len- tiscos rica en fauna donde se en- contraba la antigua laguna de la Janda-, la sierra -zona en la que abundan los alcornoques- y la vega del Barbate -extensión de terreno dedicada a la agricultura-. En la actua- lidad se la conoce como "La Morita" y constituye uno de los monumentos más emblemáticos del pueblo junto a la Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Socorro, construida en 1930. Benalup-Casas Viejas es una de las paradas ineludibles de la famo- sa Ruta del Toro, recorrido turístico a través de la campiña que permite contemplar al toro bravo en su ám- bito natural en diversas poblacio- nes como San José del Valle, Paterna de Rivera, Medina Sidonia o Alcalá de los Gazules, donde se encuentran algunas de las ganade- rías más famosas. En la parte de la Sierra predomina por el contrario la cría de venados, una actividad que se convierte en todo un espec- táculo durante el mes de septiem- bre, cuando se produce la Verrea. Desde Benalup pueden realizarse otras rutas que permitirán al viajero conocer las Pinturas Rupestres del Tajo de Las Figuras -uno de los conjuntos más impor- tantes de arte rupestre del sur de España-, el Parque Natural de los Alcornocales -paraje conocido como la última selva mediterrá- nea donde se encuentran las fin- cas de La Gargantilla y del Canuto, de gran belleza-, los pan- tanos del Celemín y del Barbate, la antigua Laguna de La Janda - antiguamente la más grande de toda la península ibérica. A pie, en bicicleta, en coche e incluso en canoa, estos itinerarios harán las delicias de los aficionados por la naturaleza, que tienen la posibilidad de conocer y disfru- tar de un entorno variado de gran riqueza ecológica. Los amantes de la buena mesa también tienen en Benalup la oportunidad de disfrutar de una gastronomía exquisita y variada que supone uno de los principa- les reclamos turísticos del muni- cipio. En cualquiera de los nume- rosos restaurantes esparcidos por toda la localidad puede de- gustarse sabrosos platos elabo- rados de forma casera con pro- ductos naturales de primera cali- dad y con una relación calidad precio inigualable. Así, son típi- cos los espárragos y tagarninas, los caracoles, la caza (perdiz, conejo, liebre, pato, venado, ja- balí, etc), los productos deriva- dos del cerdo y la repostería. Especialmente recomendable es pararse en alguna de las ventas tradicionales que conservan su aspecto rural, donde anterior- mente reponían fuerzas contra- bandistas y pastores y ahora lo hacen toda clase de turistas y au- ténticos gourmets. Conparte de su territorio incluido en laCampiña Occidental y parte en laSierra de Cádiz, el término munici-pal benalupense se divide geográ-ficamente en tres zonas: la mesa -una gran área de acebuches y len-tiscos rica en fauna donde se en-contraba la antigua laguna de laJanda-, la sierra -zona en la queabundan los alcornoques- y la vegadel Barbate -extensión de terrenodedicada a la agricultura-.
La población de Benalup seasienta sobre las cuestas situa-das entre la Mesa Baja y la Vegadel Barbate, una región de granriqueza ecológica y estratégicadonde se desarrolló una impor-tante cultura desde finales delpaleolítico y que ha dejado unode los legados artísticos prehis-tóricos más impor tantes deEspaña. Entre los restos ar-queológicos hallados en la zonadestacan pinturas rupestres,un conjunto de enterramientosque datan del Neolítico o Edadde los Metales y cuevas megalí-ticas tartésicas.
Fundada en el siglo XIX aunquedependiente de Medina Sidoniahasta hace pocos años, el nom-bre de Benalup tiene su origenen una torre construida por losmusulmanes con funciones agrí-colas y defensivas que denomi-naron "Ben a lup", término tra-ducido por los historiadores co-mo "hijo del lobo". En la actua-lidad se la conoce como "LaMorita" y constituye uno de losmonumentos más emblemáticosdel pueblo junto a la Iglesia deNuestra Señora del Socorro,construida en 1930.
Benalup-CCasas Viejas es una delas paradas ineludibles de la famo-sa Ruta del Toro, recorrido turísticoa través de la campiña que permitecontemplar al toro bravo en su ám-bito natural en diversas poblacio-nes como San José del Valle,
Paterna de Rivera, Medina Sidoniao Alcalá de los Gazules, donde seencuentran algunas de las ganade-rías más famosas. En la parte de laSierra predomina por el contrariola cría de venados, una actividadque se convierte en todo un espec-táculo durante el mes de septiem-bre, cuando se produce la Verrea.
Desde Benalup pueden realizarseotras rutas que permitirán al viajero conocer las PinturasRupestres del Tajo de Las Figuras-uno de los conjuntos más impor-
tantes de arte rupestre del sur deEspaña-, el Parque Natural de losAlcornocales -paraje conocidocomo la última selva mediterrá-nea donde se encuentran las fin-cas de La Gargantilla y delCanuto, de gran belleza-, los pan-tanos del Celemín y del Barbate,la antigua Laguna de La Janda -antiguamente la más grande detoda la península ibérica. A pie,en bicicleta, en coche e inclusoen canoa, estos itinerarios haránlas delicias de los aficionadospor la naturaleza, que tienen laposibilidad de conocer y disfru-tar de un entorno variado degran riqueza ecológica.
Los amantes de la buena mesatambién tienen en Benalup laoportunidad de disfrutar de unagastronomía exquisita y variadaque supone uno de los principa-les reclamos turísticos del muni-cipio. En cualquiera de los nume-rosos restaurantes esparcidospor toda la localidad puede de-gustarse sabrosos platos elabo-rados de forma casera con pro-ductos naturales de primera cali-dad y con una relación calidadprecio inigualable. Así, son típi-cos los espárragos y tagarninas,los caracoles, la caza (perdiz, conejo, liebre, pato, venado, ja-balí, etc), los productos deriva-dos del cerdo y la repostería.Especialmente recomendable espararse en alguna de las ventastradicionales que conservan suaspecto rural, donde anterior-mente reponían fuerzas contra-bandistas y pastores y ahora lohacen toda clase de turistas y au-ténticos gourmets.Vo
