Emilio Roselló, Alfonso Sánchez-Luna, Pilar Viviente, y

realidad, vacío y presencia, dentro y fuera.
languidecer.

me he referido anteriormente.
ensamblados a mano.

O no he sabido, o no he querido desvincularme de un

me impiden hablar.
PRESIÓN Y TEMPLE PARA EL MITO
23
Éste me re-

qué no teñir?
cuerpo, permeable, poco encolado y humedecido
profundamente.
incertidumbres, accidentes, hallazgos afortunados,

abierto a ulteriores intervenciones a lápiz o pincel.
Hemos trabajado en diferentes so-
accidentes. Una materialidad inmediata que recurre,
inevitablemente, a variedad de soportes. No exis-

BERNIA izenaren pean, artista talde baten ikerke-
ta-lan bat aurkezten da. Kolektiboa osatzen dutenak
Mario-Paul Martínez Fabre, Joan Llobell, Emilio Rose-
lló, Alfonso Sánchez-Luna eta Pilar Viviente dira, eta
koordinatzailea Pilar Escanero. Tenpera-pinturatik ar-
gazki digitalera, olioz pintatutako iruditik pixelera edo
adarrez edo urre-xaflaz egindako instalaziora, artista
hauentzat irudia skill baten bidez egiten da, paperean,
horman, zoruan edo objektuen gainean egiten den
trazuarekin zerikusi handia duen jarduera baten eta
jarrera baten bidez. Ikerkuntzaren helburua euskarria
izan da, elementu formal eta itxuratzaile gisa.
Irudi oro euskarri batean sortutako trazu edo mar-
karen bidez egiten da; bertan gertatzen da beraren
epifania edo agerraldia. Euskarriak erregistroaren kar-
ga darama edo jasotzen du. Irudiari eusten dio, edo,
hobeto esanda, irudi osoaren epifaniari eusten dio.
Euskarria den aldetik, materiala era honetan berei-
zi dezakegu:
· Mota: - papera, kartoia, pergaminoa, oihala,
harria, eta abar.
· Ehundura: - euskarri leuna (tonu-gam
zabalagoa ahalbidetzen duena)
- pikorduna (trazu hautsia ematen du,
absorbitu edo urruntzen duena)
- satinatua (kareduna, tenkatua,
presioa behar duena).
· Kolorea: - argia
- tindatua
- tonuarekin (argitik ilunera, tonua
forma emateko edo giroa sortzeko
erabil daiteke).
Elementu grafikoaren eta euskarriaren elkarketak
gradu desberdinean azpimarratzen ditu elementua-
ren mota eta paperaren edo euskarriaren ehundura.
Itsasontziak itsasoan mugitzen diren bezala, be-
ra baita haien euskarria, paperaren gainean gila eta
soto desberdineko elementuak mugitzen dira. Badira
itsasontzi moten eta ainguratzeen grabatuak, isurka-
ri desberdinetan nabigatzen diren eta ur hotz, nahasi
edo izoztuen itsasoak zeharkatzen dituzten luma mo-
tak bezala. Euskarria apal edo arasa baino zerbait
gehiago da, alegia, erregistroa garatzeko elementu
nagusia da: bertan edo beraren kontra soilik iristen da
erregistroa (pultsu sortzailearena, artistarena) erreali-
tate izatera.
Aztertu behar da nola eratzen diren trazua eta
marka euskarri batean. Eta euskarriak nola eramaten
edo garraiatzen duen erregistroaren karga, begirada
artistiko oro berez den eskaneketaren karga. Horrega-
tik, euskarririk gabe ez dago marrazkiaren epifaniarik,
haren agerraldia ez da existitzen marrazketa sortu eta
elikatzen duen euskarririk gabe.
Artista hauek aurkezten duten obra norberaren
obra indibiduala da, bakoitzak bere motibazio eta
teknikekin, baina Irudiaren zentzua disegno bezala
etortzen da beti, bai igarobidean dagoen trazu mo-
duan eta bai pentsamolde moduan,
tresna eta euskarri bezala,
funtsezko irudiaren agertoki bezala, edo
pentsamenduaren eta eskuaren arteko elkarrizketa
gune bezala.
Ez da aurkezten erakusketa didaktiko bezala, baizik
eta Egitate Piktorikoari buruzko gogoeta bezala, Iru-
diari buruzko gogoeta bezala, hala Pinturan nola New
Media deritzanetan.

EUSKARRIA IKERKETA-BIDE MODUAN
36
K.a. 30. urtean, ordenei buruz idatzi zuen tratatuan,
Vitruvio arkitekto erromatarrak hauxe esan zigun bere
lanbideari buruz: “arkitektoak trebea izan behar du ar-
katzarekin eta marrazketa ezagutu; era horretan, erraz
eta arin prestatu ahal izango ditu eraiki nahi duen
obraren itxura erakusteko beharrezkoak diren marra-
zkiak”. Hitz horien bidez, marrazketa erraz eta arin
landu daitekeen zerbait dela argitu zigun; halaber, be-
raren zentzua errealitatearen itxura ematea zela esan
zigun. Marrazketaren alderdi espontaneo eta komu-
nikatiboari buruz hitz egin zigun.
Vitruvioren planteamendutik bi mila eta hogei-
ta hamazortzi urte igaro direnean, marrazketak
berak ulertu zuen modukoa izaten jarraitzen du,
funtsean, urteen joanak utzitako aldaera batzuekin,
hala nola “mintzaira unibertsal” bihurtu izana, “zei-
nu-mintzaira” bezala (mintzaira ofiziala da Espainian,
zeinu-mintzaira espainiar eta autonomikoak eta aho-
zko komunikazioari laguntzeko tresnak aitortzen eta
arautzen dituen legearen arabera). Azken mintzaira
hori primateekin ikertu da Estatu Batuetan, hala nola
Wahsoerekin; izan ere, Afrikan jaiotako txinpantze hori
neska gor-mutu baten modura hazi dute Washington
estatuan, eta, beraren zaintzaileen arabera, gai izan da
zeinu-mintzaira amerikarraren 250 hitz ikasteko eta
ikasitakoa transmititzeko bera baino gazteagoak ziren
bi txinpantzeri. Baina marrazketa eta zeinuak ez ezik,
musika ere bada unibertsala, eta baita Alfonso, Emilio,
Joan, Pilar eta Mario Paulek egindako artelanak ere.
Beraz, galdera hau sortuko litzateke: mintzaira horiek
unibertsalak badira, nola ulertzen ote du mintzaira
giza burmuinak?
Hori guztia kezkagarria iruditzen zait, gutxienez,
kontuan hartzen baldin badugu komunikazioa iraba-
zi beharreko gerra baten eztabaidagai nagusia dela
gaur egun. Horretarako mintzaira xumea behar du-
gu, edozein euskarritan txerta daitekeena; bizipenak
transmititzeko gai den tresna bat; orduan hauteman
daiteke komunikazioaren esanahi mugagabe eta
muturrekoa. Horren bidez kate handi bat sortu da,
hainbat eta hainbat bizipen lotu, bildu, erantsi, bat
egin eta bereganatu ditzakeena.
Alfonso Sánchez -Lunak egindako lanera hurbiltzen
bagara –“Presioa eta Tenpera Mitoarentzat”–, beraren
espiritualtasuna gutaz jabetzen da, zeren denboraren
eta espazioaren moduko barrerak (gaindiezinak giza
ekintzarako) zeharka ditzakeen mistizismotik gertu
baitago, berak sortutako eta eratutako ingurune ba-
tera hurbilduz. Atsegin dut nola errespetatzen duen
berak lantzen duen materia bera, eta baita poesiaz
jantzitako duen intuizioa ere: bidea irekitzen dio uste-
kabe edo zoriari, euskarriaren bidez errealtzat hartzen
dugu ilusioa pizteko. Beraren balioak bat datoz ingu-
runearen autosufizientzia kontzeptualarekin, zeren
beraren bitartez bere bertso marraztuetan sortutako
bizipenak sentiarazten baitizkigu. Alfontso grabitate-
rik gabe nabigatzen da, lurzoruarekin inolako loturarik
izan gabe, agian beraren obra aske igeri doalako, be-
re lanari eman ahal izaten dion moldaerraztasun horri
esker.
“Digitaltasuna erregistro anitzeko euskarri gisa”
Emilio Rosellóren gogoeta da; beraren abiapuntua
“argazki ostekoa” da, errealitate sentsorialaren errefe-
rentearen adierazpen eta irudikapen euskarri bezala,
berak dioen moduan, eta horregatik “irudien ekdotika”
liluragarri batera hurbilduko gintuzke. Puntua, lerro
zuzena, angelua eta kurba zeinu sinpleak dira, Arheim
eta Wartegg-en arabera; argazkiaren mezu bisualean,
baina, zeinu sinpleak ikuspuntuaren aukeraketan
bildu litezke, agian. Hizkuntza komunikatiboak –“in
se”– aurretik ezarritako euskarri batera eramaten gaitu,
beraren savoir fairea inola ere mespretxatu gabe: auke-
ratutako elementuek beren existentziaren errealitatea
sortzen dute, hots, “a priori” itxuratutako errealitatea.
Ez genituzke inoiz ere burura ekarriko Quevedoren
bertso haiek, simaurtegi bat bilatu eta ispilu bat aurki-
tu zuen atsoaren erromantze haren hitzak:

eta intuitibo” ageriz, berak dioen moduan. “Los an-
drajos de la púrpura” testuan, Benaventek hauxe
jarri zuen Aristidesen ahotan: hunkitzen dugunean, pu-
blikoak ulertu egiten du beti. Ildo beretik, Lamartinek
hauxe esan zuen: emozioa jendearen sineste sendoa
da. Nolanahi ere, Llobellek ez du artea sortzen bes-
teek ulertu dezaten edo haien emozioak sustatzeko;
aitzitik, errealitatea hautsi eta gainditzen du, naturaz
gaindikora eta alor sakratura hurbildu nahirik, kon-
tenplazioaren bitartez estasira helduko delakoan.
Komunikazioa inbutu bat balitz bezala erabil daite-
ke. Horregatik, ulertu gabe gera daitekeen hizkuntza
batera jotzen du, hau da, ulermena ikuslearen urrakor-
tasunaren esku uzten du. Barnekoa eta kanpokoa
lotzeko ahalegin etengabean, bi alderdi horien arte-
ko lotura lehenesten du lerroan (zeinu sinplea, lehen
aipatu dugun moduan). Espiritua eta errealitatea,
hutsunea eta presentzia, barnealdea eta kanpoaldea.
“Irudikapenak” izeneko testuan, Pilar Viventek
euskarri eta tekniken aldakortasunari buruz hitz egi-
ten digu, horren bidez bere burua aztertu nahirik,
ahalegin etengabe horretan murgilduta. Berak dio-
enez, “euskarria hau zein bestea izanik, euskarrien
esperimentazioa adierazpen-xedeekin egiten da…
Ikusi, sentitu eta pentsatzen dugunak badu eragina
irudiaren tratamenduan, erabilitako teknikan eta ho-
rrek euskarri artistikoan dituen efektuetan”. Ezinegon
hori bere obra osoan ageri da, bere kezkak islatze-
ko moduaren bilaketa horretan, eta hor ulertzen da
marrazkiari emandako balioa, oso elementu malgua
baita: ezin denez inongo eremutara mugatu, arteari
berez datxezkion alor guztien osagaitzat hartzen da.
“Storyboard desenfokatua” deritzan hausnarketan,
Mario Paul Martínez Fabrek marrazketaren indar bate-
ratzailea transmititzen digu (beraren obran adierazten
diren desberdintasunak gorabehera). Gisa berean,
hauxe dio berak: “ekoizpen artistikoari dagokionez,
nire obren zati handi batek euskarria indartzeko be-
har hori adierazten dute, zeren funtsezko elementua
baita marrazketarekin eta formatu teknologikoekin
elkar hitz egiten duten sorkuntzazko kuestionamen-
duetan”. Kontuan hartzen baldin badugu zenbat aldiz
hartu den marrazketa pinturaren edo arkitekturaren
elementu lagungarritzat, atsegina da ikustea Mario
Paulen obrak bi tresna horiek (marrazketa eta formatu
teknologikoak) elkarrekin lotzen dituen komunikazio
trinkoa adierazten duela, nahiz eta, normalean, bate-
raezintzat hartu ohi diren. Badirudi Vitruvioren iragan
hark, marrazketari rol garrantzitsua ematen zionak,
espero gabeko protagonismoa hartu duela, indar eut-
siezinez bizi izan ondoren makaltzen ari omen zen
unean, hain zuzen ere.
Oraingoan, marrazketa eta euskarria baliagarriak
izan dira haien artean dagoen elkarkomunikazioaz
hausnartzeko, artista horien obrak abiapuntutzat har-
tuta, hau da, elkarren artean inolako zerikusirik ez izan
arren helburu berberera iristeko bat egiten duten ar-
tista horien obrak abiapuntutzat hartuta.

Berriki egin dudan lan artistikoa berrikustean, cor-
pus unitario bat ematen dioten konstante batzuk
antzematen ditut; hala, corpus horretan itxuraz des-
berdinak diren baliabide tekniko batzuk biltzen dira,
batez ere euskarriak, mihise eta paperaren gaineko
bi dimentsioko obratik instalaziora eta interbentziora
doazenak. Alderdi formalean, lerroaren erabilera ant-
zematen da nire obra askotan; ildo horretatik, lerroak
protagonismoa hartzen du logikaren edo diskurtso
arrazionalaren eremutik ezin eskura daitezkeen
barneko errealitateen irudikapen sinboliko bezala.
Lerroak itxura ez-materiala ematen die irudikapen
horiei, eta, aldi bereran, minimoaren irudikapen gisa
uler daiteke, sakratutasuna adieraz dezaketen gauzen
funtsaren irudikapen gisa. Lerro hori euskarritik soilik
atera daiteke, euskarritik soilik azalera daiteke, “berari
berriz lotuta”. Gure errealitaterik barnekoena bezalaxe,
ezin bereizi daiteke kanpoko errealitatetik, zeren sub-
jektua eta objektua bateratzen dituen Osotasun bat
egiten baitugu berarekin.
Euskarri piktorikoz egin dudan obran, lerroak
edo urrezko, kobrezko edo zilarrezko “hariak” for-
ma konplexu eta organikoak eratzen ditu, eta forma
horiek gure inguruan eta gure barnean immanente bi-
hurtzen den transzendentziaren irudi poetikoak izan
daitezke. Eduki sinboliko irekiko elementu horiek argi-
tasuna hedatzen dute, tonalitate ilunez –okre gorrixka
edo urdina– egindako atzealdeekin kontrastatuz, eta
era horretan gure baitan biltzera eta isilik egotera gon-
bidatzen gaituen hustasun barera sartzen gaituzte.
Begizta, korapilo edo sokaren sinboloak “S.T.” ize-
neko interbentzioan adierazten dira; teknika mistoz
eta urre-xaflaz eginda dago, Teuladako Divina Pastora
baselizan, eta misterioaren sarrerako ate gisa inter-
preta daiteke. Irudi poetiko horiek hiru dimentsioko
beste euskarri batzuetan ere adierazten dira, hala nola
Alacanteko Unibertsitateko Museoan ikusgai dagoen
“Lligam Lluminós” izeneko instalazio handian. Azken
artelan horren lerroa hiru dimentsioko zerbait bihur-
tzen da, urre-xaflaz estalitako soka bezala: mataza bat
eratzen du, Unibertsoan existitzen den guztiaren eta
berarekin identifikatzen gaituen lotunearen arteko
konexioaren irudikapen gisa uler litekeena.
Natura bera ere euskarritzat hartu dut berriki
egin ditudan artelan batzuetan; adibidez: Deniako
Gazteluko basoan egindako “Llàgrimes llampants” in-
terbentzioan. Kasu horretan, lerroak argi-grafismoen
forma hartu du, alegia, malko edo euri tanta forma
duten ehun eta hogeita hamabost ispilu mugikorren
gainean Eguzkiaren islak irudikatzen dituen argi-gra-
fismoen forma. Argiztapen espiritualari atxikita, argia
nire sormen-lan plastikoaren ohiko elementu sinboliko
garrantzitsuetako bat da; izan ere, sormen horretan
elementu argitsuren bat nabarmentzen da beti, kon-
tenplaziora deitzen digun ilunpearen gainean.
Nire sormen-lan plastikoari lotuta lehen adierazi
“Senders” erakusketako obretan. “Fageda” instalazioa,
hiru metroko altuerako laurogei adar margotuz egina,
izadiak nigan sortzen duen erakarpenaren adibide ona
da. Artearen eta izadiaren artean dagoen lotura naba-
ria da gure garaiko sormen-lan plastikoan. Ingurune
natural batean ibiltzea, mendian, estetikatik harata-
go doan bizipen bat da, zeren naturaz gaindikoaren
eremura eramaten baikaitu. Izadian presentzia bat su-
matzen da, inguratzen gaituen guztiarekin bat egiteko
sentsazioa eta osotasuna ekartzen diguna. Historian
zehar mundu osoko hainbat filosofia eta mugimendu
erlijiosok azpimarratu duen zerbait da hori.
“Oceà”, dimentsio handiko koadro bat -770 x 200
cm-, “Senders” erakusketan dudan beste obra baten
izenburua da. Bada jarraitutasun plastiko garbia 2004.
urtean egin nuen obra piktorikoarekin: atzealde urdin
ilunak eta hainbat metaletan egindako marrazkiak.
Atzealde horrek, oihal gainean pintatutako euskarriak,
zerbait etereo edo elementu likidoren bat iradokitzen
du; adibidez: ura. Bere interpretazioan gako batzuk es-
kainiz, eduki irekia izanik, ozeanoa irudi sinboliko gisa
erabili dute gizateriaren tradizio espiritual batzuek,
errealitateaz hitz egiteko, existitzen den guztia aipa-
tzeko. Metaforikoki hitz eginez, esan genezake gizakia
mugarik ez duen ur masa batean sartutako tanta bat
dela. Era horretan, beherena –gizakien errealitate in-
dibiduala erreferentziatzat hartuta– Osotasunarekin
identifikatzen da, hustasun mugagabean urtuz.
LERROA BARNEKOTASUNAREN ADIERAZPIDE MODUAN

“Univers” obra ere zentzu bertsuan interpreta liteke;
izan ere, badu nolabaiteko antzekotasun kontzeptual
eta formala lehen aipatu dudan “Lligam Lluminós”
instalazioarekin. Kasu horretan, lerroak sare moduko
zerbaiten antza hartzen du, meditazio ekintza gi-
sa eskuz urratutako eta muntatutako paper zatiekin
egindako sare baten antza, hain zuzen ere. Nire obra
askotako euskarriak iradokitzen duen ezerezaren or-
dez, instalazio hau hartu duen aretoaren espazio
hutsa agertzen da oraingoan. Obra honen zentzu erli-
jiosoa sareta-leiho baten antza izatetik datorkio, zeren
lausotuta edo ezkutatuta geratzen den errealitatearen
alderdi bat erdizka ikustea uzten baitigu.
Arteari errealitate bizi eta sakonaren esperientzia
eta bizipena eman diezazkidan exijitzen diot, senti-
tzeko eta bizitzeko eran azalekotasuna eta hutsalkeria
nagusitu diren garai historiko honetan. Alde horreta-
tik, sormen plastikoaren eta mistikaren artean dagoen
hurbiltasunaz hitz egin dezakegu. Itxuraz kontrakoa
badirudi ere, artearen ikuspegi horren asmoa ez da
ihes-nahia bultzatzea, baizik eta kontzientzia han-
diagoz bizitzea, erneago eta arretatsuago egonik.
Sormen plastikoak erakutsi dezake munduan dugun
presentzia handiagoa dela; horixe da, agian, Santa
Teresa Jesus Haurrarenak bere tradizio kulturaletik
interpretatzen zuena, hots, Jaungoikoa lapikoen ar-
tean ikustea. Hutsalkeriaren kontrako erreakzio gisa,
Bill Viola, Antoni Tàpies eta oraingo beste artista ba-
tzuek uste dute gure gizarteak kontenplazioa balo-
ratu behar duela, gure bizia sentitzeko eta bizitzeko
modu sakonagotzat hartuta; beren ustez, horrek oso
eragin positiboa izan dezake eguneroko bizitzaren al-
derdi guztietan.
Historian zehar arteak existitzeko izan duen arrazoi
nagusietako bat da errealitatearen eta gure barnea-
ren alderdi ezkutuetara hurbiltzeko gizakiak duen
beharraren adierazpide izatea, hau da, logika arra-
zional hutsaren bidez ezin ikus edo ulertu daitezkeen
alderdietara hurbiltzeko beharraren adierazpide
izatea. Erlijiotasunak eta arteak azalera ateratzen du-
te existentzia kuestionatzeko gizakiak berez duen
joera, behin betiko erantzunik ez duen bilaketa-bide
batean.

Balantzea eginez, eta nire azken lanetan dagoen
presentzia teknologiko handia gorabehera, zaila
gertatzen zait aurkitzea sasoi produktibo bat, non
marrazketak, bere zentzurik funtsezkoenean, hots,
euskarri baten gainean garatzen den konfigurazio
grafikotzat hartuta, ez baitu modu esanguratsuan es-
ku hartu nire sormen-prozesuetan. Ez dut jakin, edo ez
dut nahi izan, pertzepzio eta gauzatze eredu primario
batetik bereizi; izan ere, eredu hori hasieratik beretik
egon da errotuta nire obran, eta, epe luzera, ezinbes-
teko lotune moduan finkatu da, nire atzean dagoen
historia eta tradizio plastikoa uztartuz neure esperi-
mentazioaren bidez eta gure garaiko testuinguruaren
eraginen bidez neuk eraiki dudan ideia multzoarekin.
Kontzeptuaren eta formaren arteko oreka klasikoa
marrazketaren eta euskarriaren arteko arazo paralelo
batean islatu da; kasu gehienetan, arazo hori plantea-
tu da marrazketa eta euskarria espektro teknologikoari
gainjartzean abiatzen den inflexio-puntuan. Esparru
horretan, baliabide zaharren eta berrien artean, no-
labaiteko bereizkuntza egin nezake ilustratzaile gisa
dudan zereginaren eta helburu artistiko hutsekin egi-
ten dudan lanaren artean.
Ilustrazioa, batez ere artikulu, liburu eta norberak
eskaintzen zizkidan formatuena, truke eta konexio
espaziotzat hartu dut; izan ere, espazio horretan elkar-
tzen dira, alde batetik, arkatzez egindako marrazketak
edo ur-koloreak -adibidez- eskain ditzaketen eraikun-
tza eta euskarri analogikoak eta, bestetik, euskarri
digitalak, hala nola infografia eta azken belaunaldiko
argazkia. Aurrekoekin batera, azken horiek lagun-
garriak izan dakizkidake errealitate plastiko berriak
definitzeko.
Lehenengo begiratuan oraingo testuinguruarekin
estetikoki konektatzeko esfortzu bat dela pentsa ba-
dezakegu ere, horren azpian dagoena da elkarrizketa
horren berezko eta funtsezko arkitektura bat ezartze-
ko ahalegina. Beraren modus operandia legitimatzen
duen egitura bat, eredutzat hartzen duen paisaiaren
berrirakurketaren bitartez, eredu hori eta berarekin
doan testuaren ondoan finkatzea azkeneko helburu-
tzat hartuta.
Ekoizpen artistikoari dagokionez, nire obren zati
handi bat euskarri sendotzeko behar horretara
zuzentzen da, hau da, euskarria funtsezko elementu-
tzat hartzen dut marrazketarekin eta formatu tek-
nologikoekin elkarrizketatzen diren sorkuntzazko
kuestionamenduetan.
Eredu ilustratuekin dagoen desberdintasuna oso
garbia da, eta beraren funtsa da baduela diskurtso
propio bat, problematika hori gehiago sakontzen
duena eta oinarri gisa balio duena beste gai kritiko ba-
tzuetarako. Badira korrespondentzia horren adibidea
modu garbian erakusten duten bi lan: “Sin Noticias
de Mí/Cartografía Hacia lo Último”, eta “Blur Story-
board” (Storyboard Desenfokatua)”. Bi obra horietan,
bideo-animazio bat proiektatzen da paperezko euska-
rrien gainean, maila desberdineko gauzatze formalak
uztartuz.
Lehendabizikoan, euskarriak disoluzio baten errea-
litatea hartzen du, giza enbor baten marrazkia, bere
euskarria bezain efimeroa; beraren gainean, enborra
aurkitu nahi duten beso batzuk proiektatzen dira.
Bigarren obran, berriz, panel flotatzaile multzo bat
eszenatoki (biñetak) moduan erabiltzen da; bertatik,
proiektatutako pertsonaia batzuk mugitzen dira, une
labur batzuetan soilik konkretatzen direnak, hots, gi-
doiaren parametroei jarraituz modu garbian itxuratu
eta grafikoki enfokatzen direnean.

Irudiaren itxuratzaileak euskarriarekin duen elka-rreragina garrantzitsua da mezuaren eraikuntzan; izan ere, Marshall MacLuhanek esan zuen moduan “bitarte-koa da mezua”. Proiektu honetan, argazki-ostekoaren eremuari egiten diogun ekarpen pertsonala islatu nahi dugu, errealitate sentsorialaren erreferentea adieraz-ten duen euskarri eta irudikapen gisa. Argazkigintzaz hitz egitean, gogora ekarriko dugu Jerry N. Uelsmann-en esaldi hura, hauxe zioena: “kamera bitarteko arin bat da beste errealitate hori aurkitzeko”. Gure asmoa da erregistro digital horretaz hausnartzen saiatzea, alegia, argi itxuratzailea informazioa erregistratzeko beste azal batzuekin topatzeko ekintza prestatzen duen erregistro digital horretaz hausnartzen saiatzea. Argi itxuratzailea da lan egiteko bitarteko nagusia, zeren bertatik ateratzen baitugu bisualki editatu dai-tekeen beste errealitate horretarako garrantzitsua den informazioa. Argazkigintza digitala transformazio bidez erre-gistratutako irudien eremukoa da. Justo Villafañe Gallego-k dioenez (Introducción a la teoría de la imagen, Ediciones Pirámide, Madril, 1988), irudiak erregistratzeko sistema orok bi elementu mota kon-binatzen ditu: euskarria eta itxuratzailea. Euskarria irudia erregistratzeaz arduratzen den materiala da, eta itxuratzailea, berriz, irudi materiala. Ezagutzen di-tugun erregistro sistemak bi elementu horien arteko elkarreraginetik sortzen dira. Argazki edo irudi digitalak euskarri ugari elkar-tzeko bidea ematen du; modu digitalean kodetutako estatus ez-materiala izanik, itxuratzailea eta interfazea konfiguratzeko lan-tresna bat da, era desberdineko euskarri edo erregistro sistemekin; horien artean, honako hauek aipa ditzakegu:
• Transformazio bidezko erregistroak: fotokimikoak, digital optikoa, digital akustikoa. • Adizio bidezko erregistroak: tinta injektatzearen bidezko inprimaketa, mikropigmentu edo tinta pigmentatuak injektatzearen bidezko inprimaketa, inprimaketa termikoa, laser bidezko inprimaketa eta inprimaketa fotosentikorra. • Modelaketaren bidezko erregistroak: hiru dimentsioko inprimaketa.
Obra prozesu batzuen bidez eraikitzen da; pro-zesu horiek pre-click eta post-click izenez ezagutzen ditudan faseen arabera garatzen ditut. Lehenengoa errealitatearen zati bat hartzea da, eta bigarrena era-bakiak hartzea eta gauzatzea da, erreferentearen irudia itxuratzeko. Gero, bukatzeko, topaketa egokia prestatzen da obraren azkeneko euskarriarekin. Argazkia egiteko ekintza aurre-topaketa intelektual intuitiboko jarreratzat hartzen dugu. Asmoa da espe-rientzia propioa eta norberaren Umwelt partikularra izatea adimen kontziente gisa esku har dezaketen era-gileak. Eszenan ez da ezer ere prestatzen, ez da ezer ere trukatzen; aitzitik, kamerak betidanik ahalbidetu dizkigun aukerek soilik parte hartzen dute, enkoadra-tzeko erabiltzen dugun ikuspuntua aukeratzen da, eta era horretan kontzienteki aukeratzen dugu zer eraku-tsi nahi dugun eta zer isolatzen ari garen, “errealitate gordailuan” harrapatuta eta erregistratuta geratuko den zatiaren espazioa zehazteko. Argazkia “errealita-te gordailutzat” hartzen duen kontzeptua Rosalind Kraussek asmatu zuen; hemen eskaintzen den inter-pretazioa, berriz, propioa da eta prozesuaren metafora gisa erabiltzen da. Erreferentea hartzearen zentzuan, eta adierazitakoarekin bat etorriz, estadio horretan itxuratzen dena hasierako prozesu honi bukaera ema-ten dion clickaren ekintza aktibatzen duen erresortea prestatu eta estimulatzen duten faktoreak dira. Etapa honetan, eta adierazitako zentzuan, erreali-tatea errespetatzen dugu erreferentearen dokumentu bezala. Gordailu edo edukiontzi honentzat, tekniko-ki kolore-espazio zabalagoak erabiltzen ditugu, hots, azkeneko euskarriak islatu edo interpretatu ditzakee-nak baino zabalagoak –kontzeptu hori paraleloa da oraingo bitarteko eta sistemarekin, zeren eta, bertan, informazioaren saturazioa ezin harrapatuzkoa baita bere neurrigatik-; horri esker, geroago informazio bi-sual horren sintesia eta desugerketa egin ahal izango ditugu, mezuarentzat esanguratsutzat jotzen duguna aurkeztu ahal izateko eta, aldi barean, azkeneko eus-karrian erreproduzitu ahal dugun larruazala eratu ahal izateko. Gaiei dagokienez, esparru publikoen eszenatikoak jorratzen ditugu gehienbat; bertan, giza irudiak jar-duera orokorrak aurkezten ditu, batasun gestaltikoko ikuspegitik. “Goi” eta “behe” mailako kulturen testuin-

guru komunetan kokatzen da, hau da, lan egiten eta mugitzen garen testuinguruan eta bizi garen sekto-rean (ludiko eta turistikoa). Batzuetan, zirkuitu kultural handietan bat egiten dute, bertan “bestelako modu bat” antzeman baitaiteke, ikuskizun kolektibo bezala, topagune bezala eta mestizaia kultural bezala. Post-click prozesuaren mamia itxuratzailea eral-datzen duten erabakiak hartzea da. Horrek bidea ematen du ikusgaiaren erresuma nabarmenki zabal-tzeko. RAW edo HDRen moduko artxibo digitalen euskarriek informazio bisualari ekartzen dioten sa-turaziotik, aukeratzeko bidea eskaintzen zaigu, erreferentearen geruzak doituz, nibelatuz, bereiziz, eta abar… RAW irudiak artxibatzeko formatu digital bat da, irudi “gordinaren” datu guzti-guztiak gorde-tzen dituena, argazki-kameraren sentsore digitalak hartu duen moduan. HDR, berriz, “High Dynamic Ran-ge” kontzeptuaren siglak dira (Goi Bitarte Dinamikoa). Prozesatze-teknologia horrek giza begiaren funtzio-namendua imitatzen du, hau da, bidea ematen du informazioa integratzeko eta ikusgai dauden argita-sun desberdinak erakusteko, zona argitsu batetik zona ilun batera –eta alderantziz- pasatzean egiten dugun bezala. HDR tekniken bidez, argazkiaren gabezia ho-ri gainditu nahi da, zeren beraren zona guztiak modu egokian erregistratzea lortzen baita, “argi kantitate” oso desberdinak eduki arren. Haren mozorrotze mugatua, informazio-kanalen ar-teko elkarreraginak, datuak geruzen artean trukatzea eta asmo anitzeko done/undo ekintzak dira azkeneko irudia itxuratuko duten erabakien mamia; dena dela, hori egitean ez da erreferentea galtzen, edo, gutxie-nez, argazki-errealismoaren mailan mantentzen da. Alderdi horretan, irudi bakoitzean pertsonalizatzen dira sRGB edo RGB kamerako irudiaren balioekin elka-rreraginean aritu behar diren prozesu teknikoak; hor badira input/output gailu batzuk, aurretik kalibratu di-renak beren espazio eta kolore-profilen bidez. Pantailan ikusten dena aurreikusitako euskarri batekin bat egiten duela segurtatuz, nolabaiteko fida-garritasunez. Azpimarratzekoa da argi itxuratzailearen protagonismoa, zeren bertan erabakitzen baitugu zer erreferente zati erakusten dugun eta nola egiten du-gun, halako moldez non itxuratzaileak bidea ematen duen hizkuntza sortzeko, bere jatorrizko euskarri ele-ktronikotik; gero, berriz, topaketa prozesua erabiltzen da, azkeneko bitartekoaren edo euskarriaren mugak ezagututa. Gela iluna gela argituago bihurtu da. Lightroom horretan, argi itxuratzailea laneko euskarri nagusi bilakatzen da, zeren bertan gauzatzen baitira infor-
mazioa “errealitate gordailutik” erauzteko prozesuak -gordailu hori artxibo digitala da (edo negatiboa)-. Argiak paperarekin topo egin dezan, argazkigintzak arauzko tamainako paperak eskaintzen ditu, prozesu kimikoekin eta akabera normalizatuekin. Eskaintza urria da, batez ere alderatzen baldin badugu argaz-kietarako aurkitu litezkeen materialen askotarikotasun eta aberastasunarekin. Dena dela, digitaltasunaren mundu berrian barneratzen bagara, oraindik ere es-ploratu gabe dagoen bide berri bat aurkitzen dugu, euskarri motei dagokionez. Tinta pigmentatuak edo mikropigmentuak injektatzearen bidez inprimatzeko sistemak horren abagunerik onena bilakatu dira gaur egun; izan ere, azidorik ez duten eta erregistro fotoki-mikoak baino askoz ere iraupen luzeagoa duten paper aldaera ugari erabiltzea ahalbidetzen dute. Argazki-piktorialismotik plano errealaren eta pla-no birtualaren artean garatzen den trantsizio-estadio hori atzeman nahi dugu. Antzinako balio batzuk -ia iraungita edo neurri batean baztertuta edo gutxietsi-ta daudenak- ordeztu dituzten “balio berriak” ironiaz erakutsiz. Bitartekoaren sistema programatutako “sis-tema eragile” bezala esplizitatzen da; bertan aukera dugu elkarreraginean aritzeko, “kontsola global” ho-netako roletan, beraren genero eta teknologietan. Giza alderdia sisteman txertatutako avatar bezala azaltzen da, bertan gorpuztuta.

Euskarri kontzeptuari buruzko hausnarketa (nire
obran) nire ibilbide artistikoaren sorkuntza-prozesu
oso konkretu batean oinarritzen da. “Crisólitos” izen-

plastiko honen zati nagusiak serie bat garatzen du
paperaren gainean, marrazkitik abiatuta, non marra-
zkia artelaneko irudia definitzen duen estrategiatzat
hartzen baita (konposizio-egitura, formaren inguruko
ikusmoldea, eta abar). Obrak hausnarketa-iturri izan-
go zaizkigu, zeren beren irudien bitartez sortzailearen
ekintza prometeiko bezala (berria eta gertagaitza de-
na sortzeko jarrera borrokalaria) planteatuko baitute
hizkuntza plastikoa, konposizioa marrazketan erabili-
tako materialen iradokizunetatik nola muntatzen den
proiektatuz, “pasada grafiko” deitzen dioguna le-
rroaren sentikortasunarekin konbinatuz.
Obra multzo hau bat dator ibilbide artistiko jakin
batekin, non grabatuaren materia-kalitatetik (bisuala)
egindako sorkuntzazko hizkuntza batek heldutasuna
lortu baitu, bai grafiatik abiatuta eta bai arrastotik
abiatuta. Ahaleginak egin ditut balio horiek estanpa
eta bitarteko piktorikoa elkartzen dituzten obretan
aplikatzeko, esperimentazio eremu oso zabalak irekiz.
Beste alde batetik, sorkuntzazko proiektu hau abia-
puntu jakin batetik dator, hots, plastika poetikatzat
hartuta edo poetika jakin batekin duen harremanetik
abiatuta. Nire plastikaren eragilea lirika mitologikoan
bilatu dut, Ovidioren Metamorfosietan zuzenean
inspiratutako obra batzuk paper gainean eginez, ira-
dokizunez betetako karga oroitarazle osoarekin. Nire
“Crisólitos” proiektuaren izena mineral solido bitxi ba-
tek eman zidan, alegia, Apoloren gurdia apaintzen
duen chrysolithus deritzan mineralak (Metamorfosia,
II. liburua, 110. bertsoa): “[…], uztarrian, ordena ja-
kin batean jarritako krisolitoek eta harribitxiek argi
distiratsua itzultzen zioten Febori, bera islatuz”. Argi
apolotarra “atzematen” duen gema horrek –greziarren
esanetan, gema horrek gizakion barne ilunbeltza ar-
gitzen zuen– obretan islatu behar den edo islatu nahi
dudan energiaren “frogarri” eta metafora bezala balio
dit. Ikuspuntu kontzeptualetik, nire irudi plastikoak
irudi poetiko iradokitzaileetatik ateratzen dira. Ovi-
diorena jainkoen transformazioak poetizatzen dituen
kosmogonia bat da, jainkoei ibai, euri, mendi, abere
edo kimeren forma ematen diena; halaber, jainkoek
gizakiok baldintzatzeko dituzten forma ugariak ere
poetizatzen ditu (grina, maitasuna, gorrotoa, inbidia,
mendekua eta horrelakoak bitartekotzat hartuta),
natura misteriotsuak gizakion patuan duen eragin
kontaezina erakutsiz.
Obra horietako bakoitzak erabateko zentzua har-
tzen du berarekin batera doazen Ovidioren bertsoetan.
Izatez, nire sorkuntzazko prozesuaren “eragilea” poe-
maren iradokizunen inguruko ikerketa izan zen, gero
neu paperaren aurrean jartzeko eta bertsoen espi-
riturako hurbilpenak zirriborratzeko. Erabili dudan
lan metodoa marrazkiaren espontaneotasuna oha-
rren koadernoan biltzen saiatzen da, konposizioa
egituratzen duen aurre-marrazkiarekin –arkatz kolore-
dunen eta akuarelen grafismoaren bidez bideratutako
ideiak–. Hori guztia geroagoko prozedura baten bi-
zkarretik, alegia, obra behin betiko eraikitzeko xedez
pintura eta estanpazioa uztartzen dituen prozedura-
ren bizkarretik.
Poema esploratzera zuzendutako lehenengo ma-
rrazkien ondoren, obraren planteamendua da oreka
gordetzen saiatzea: keinuak agertzeaz batera, aldatu
gabe mantentzen da adierazpidearen zentzu “epifa-
nikoa”. Saiatzen naiz irudiaren autonomia nolabaiteko
irudikatze-ahalmenarekin uztartzen, abstrakzioaren
eta figurazioaren arteko bereizkuntzetatik haratago.
Teknika aukeratzerakoan, helburua izan da orba-
naren ahalmen gogora ekarlea bultzatzea, ausazkoa
subjektibotasunaren katalizatzaile bezala erabiliz.
Alde horretatik, grabatzailearen lanbidea izan da
monotipoa aukeratzera eraman nauena, horixe bai-
ta biderik onena paperaren gaineko “pasada grafiko”
bat egiteko, dela aurretiko estanpazio moduan dela
azkeneko sorkuntza-bitarteko bezala, Los Hados se me
anticipan y me impiden hablar obran ikus daitekeen
bezala.
Monotipoaren teknikak pororik gabeko matrize
batean nahasten du kolorea (plastikozko edo beira-
zko xafla), bertan finkatu gabe, torkuluaren presioak

berak modelatu ditzan estanpako orbanak eta gra-
fismoak; era horretan estanpatu ziren zenbait paper,
marrazketaren edo pinturaren bidez esku hartzeko
prestatuz. Paperaren absortzioak eta kolorearen us-
tekabeko banaketak bidea ematen didate estanpa
erronka moduan irakurtzeko, alderdi morfologiko
hutsaren azpian dauden balizko elkarketak bilatuz.
Bitarteko grafiko-piktorikoak irudia eraikitzeko era
determinatzen du, kontuan hartuta neuk garatzen
dudan hizkuntza plastikoak bitarteko piktoriko jakin
bat eskatzen duela, alegia, kolorearen gardentasun
edo opakutasun maila desberdinekin jokatzea ahalbi-
detzen didan bitarteko piktoriko bat, eta horregatik
aukeratu dut tenpera-pintura. Argiaren islak pigmen-
tuz tindatutako paperaren azal argitsuan adierazten
dituen poetikak eta sentsualtasunak aglutinatzaile
hobezin bihurtzen dute arrautza-tenpera, zeren berari
esker lausodura bidez pintatu ahal baita kolore-satu-
razio desberdinak erabiliz.
Beste alde batetik, keinua arin finkatzea ahalbide-
tzen duen ur-teknika bat da, olio-teknikak eskainiko
ligukeen kolore-bibrazio berbera gordetzen duena.
Nire gogoko enpasteak egiteko behar ditudan dentsi-
tate –eta plastikotasun– kalitateak eman ahal zizkidan
tenpera mota bat behar nuen, erabilitako materia
piktorikoaren funtsa aldatu gabe: irtenbidea Va-
lentziako Arte Eder Fakultateko irakasle Domingo
Oliver Rubiok eman zidan, aglutinatzaile piktorikoak
ederki ezagutzen baititu. Berak gomendatu zidan
arrautza-tenperaren oinarria erretxina batez nahas-
tea, aglutinatzailea “gehiago gorpuzteko”, substantzia
piktorikoa pintzel edo espatularen bidez modelatzeko
behar nuen neurrian, erretxinaren kontzentrazioaren
arabera.
Tenpera-pintura erretxinadunarekin dudan es-
perientzia zabala aprobetxatuz, obra gehienetan
substratu grafiko bat aplikatu dut, aurretik egindako
prestakin bat, tenpera- eta erretxina-pinturaz egin-
dako monotipoak erabiliz; beste batzuetan, berriz,
pintura diluituaren hondakinak uzten ditut paperean
esekita, lehorketa izan dadin kolore-orbanen for-
egin dudan bezala. Emaitza obra isurkari bat da, ber-
tsoaren oihartzun musikalen erritmoan kulunkatzen
dena, halako moldez non irudia poliki-poliki agertzen
baitzaio ikusleari, “igartze geldoaren” bidez, ikono-
grafikoa baino gehiago sentsuala den kartografia bat
ekarriz gogora.
Ovidioren bertsoen metaforen bitartez itxuratuz,
obra plastikoak artistaren barneko pertzepzioa erakut-
si edo adierazi nahi du, alegia, funtsezko zerbaitek
“ihes egiten digulako” pertzepzioa: pintzelada-sare bat
animatu edo bertan bidaiatzen den zerbait, pigmentu
eta erretxinen taupada ehunduarekin, azalean bere
arrastoa uzteko arrastatuak. Hau da, azken batean, ar-
gi, ur eta zauriaren artean paperean marrazteko.

Testu hau nire azken artelanetako euskarriari
buruzko azterlan bat da, grafikaren (marrazkia) eta
euskarri artistikoaren arteko erlazioak eta bi horien
eta erabilitako teknikaren arteko erlazioa bereziki
jorratuz.
Zergatik estali? Zergatik erabili prozedura sarko-
rrak edo adizio-prozedurak gainazalean? Zergatik
ez tindatu? Papera oliotan murgiltzeak kolore-geru-
zen bidezko adizio-prozedura tradizionala ordeztu
dezake. Olio-paperak gorputz gutxikoa eta iragazko-
rra izan behar du, gutxi lekedatu behar da eta sakon
hezetu. Prozedura horrek euskarri edo paperaren
gardentasuna erakusten du. Halaber, kolorea modu
partzialean estaltzen bada, tratatutako gainazalak
itxura leunagoa erakusten du horren ondorioz, zeren
gainazalak materialki asimilatzen baitu euskarria, eus-
karriaren eta gainazalaren identitatea aldatuz, entitate
independenteak direlako.
Garrantzitsua euskarriaren materialtasuna da, ar-
gia eta kolorea. Olio-paper batean lortutako efektuek
bidea ematen dute obra egiteko uneak ikusteko, eta
aurreko trazak geroagokoen inspirazio iturri dira. Eus-
karri zeharrargi honen gainean, marrazkiaren trazuak
obraren bi alderdiak ikustea ahalbidetzen du, aurkia
eta ifrentzua trukagarriak dira, itzulgarriak. Gainera,
euskarriaren eta gainazalaren arteko batasunak erraz-
ten du bi dimentsioko euskarritik hiru dimentsioko
euskarrira pasatzea.
Olioaren teknika armazoi gaineko oihalean era-
biltzen da asmo horietarako. Erraz asimilatzen ditu
tachismea, ekintzako pintura eta zeinua, bere trazu
azkar, desberdin, espontaneo eta behin betikoekin,
inguru lausoko ur-kolore anbiguoak, euskarriari bizia
ematen dion isurki-unibertso osoa, marrazkia bere
materialtasunean txertatuz.
Berehalako materialtasunaren bilaketa zenbait
motatako euskarritara hedatzen da, obraren objek-
tu-izaera azpimarratzen du. Material oso desberdinek
–adibidez: papera edo metala– efektu berdintsuak sor
ditzakete. Olio-paperak (paper tindatua) zein eskulturak
izanik, “eskultopinturak” (gainazal metalikoen trata-
mendu piktoriko/grafikoa), bi euskarri horiek zalantzak,
akzidenteak, zorioneko aurkikuntzak, damuak erregis-
tratzen dituzte, arrasto bizidunak dira. Olio-paperek
egitate piktorikoaz hitz egiten dute, murgilketak ukitu-
tako euskarri bezala. Gainazala (metala) korrosibo, azido,
olio eta beste gai kimiko batzuen bitartez “kimikoki
eraldatzen” duen euskarri kimikotik ondorioztatzen
diren prozedura piktorikoek metalaren ezaugarri es-
pezifikoak absorbitzen dute egitate piktorikoan. Era
horretan saihesten da adizio-prozedura piktorikoek
edo geruzen bidezko prozedurek obraren euskarriaren
eta pinturaren artean sortzen duten desberdintasuna.
Gainazalak bizirik dagoenaren adierazpena asimilatzen
du, kimikaren fluxua, materiaren akzidenteak, isurkaria
den guztia, izatearen eta sortzearen jokoa eta gozame-
na. Horixe da euskarriaren errealitate materiala. Plantxa
bernizen bidez babesten da geroago.
Cuerpo magenta izeneko obran (pintura burdina-
ren gainean, 190 x 130 x 20 cm), apaindura-motiboa
txantiloiz eta sprayz egin da; teknika grafiko horiek
aniztasunaren berezko teknikak dira eta kohesio tema-
tikoko printzipio bat ekartzen dute, errepikapenaren
bitartez. Euskarriaren ikuspuntutik, metala zehatz-
mehatz aztertu da prozedura eskultoriko berriei buruz
aurretik egindako argitalpen batean.
Niri dagokionez, argazkiaz baliatzearen asmoa ez
da argazki serieak ekoiztea, baizik eta originalak sor-
tzea, erabilitako estanpazio prozedurekin bezala. Irudi
anitz moduan, argazkia eskuz tratatzen da geroa-
go (marrazkia eta pintura). Kasu horretan, marraztea
era desberdineko euskarriz konposatzea da niretzat,
adierazpide desberdinei atxikitako zenbait material
–70 x 50 cm, 2008–. Kamerak irudikapen bat atzema-
ten du (diedrikoa, axonometrikoa, perspektiba), eta
gero modu digitalean prozesatzen da, hasierako iru-
dia aldatu arte. Infografiaz baliatzearen helburua da
objektu ikusgaien inguruak erreproduzitzen dituen
argazki-irudi hori errealitate bisual berri baterantz mu-
gitzea. Argazkia abiapuntua da, azkeneko irudia baino
gehiago; grafika informatikoaren eta “idazketa” grafiko/
piktorikoaren euskarri artistikoa da, bitarteko digita-
larena eta esku-bitartekoarena. Euskarri artistikotzat

hartuta, argazki digitalak errazten du irudiaren geroko
prozesamendu digitala; geroago arkatzez edo pintzelez
esku hartzea ahalbidetzen duen prozesu bat da.
Euskarria zeinahi delarik ere, euskarrien esperi-
mentazioa adierazpen-xedeekin egiten da. Artistaren
ikuspuntutik, artea barneko bizipena egituratzen duen
prozesu bat da. Barneko prozesu bat dakar berekin,
burmuina eta pertzepzioa inplikatuz. Ikusi, sentitu
eta pentsatzen dugunak badu eragina irudiaren tra-
tamenduan, erabilitako teknikan eta horrek euskarri
artistikoan dituen efektuetan. Zenbait euskarritan lan
egin dugu, era desberdineko teknikak erabiliz; bertan,
marrazkiak (grafikak) intentziozko esanahia izan de-
zake edo ez, hizkuntza da eta ez da, gorputzaren eta
adimenduaren hizkuntza da, aztarna eta eraikuntza
da, norberaren esplorazio propioa eta kanpo mun-
duaren esplorazioa ere bai.
Gogora dezagun Roger de Piles-ek marrazkiari
buruz egin zuen definizioa: “aurrena, marrazkia dei-
tzen zaio pintoreak paperean edo mihisean jartzen
duen koadro baten ideiari, meditatzen ari den obra
ebaluatzeko”. Beraz, ekintzaren ostean meditazioa
dator. Baina “garrantzia duena ez da errealitatearen
kopia, baizik eta sorkuntza hutsera hurbiltzea, “akzi-
dente kontrolatuaren” erabilera berekin dakarren
teknika kontzeptu baten bitartez: ausazkoaren (ele-
mentu naturala) eta giza faktoreak gauzatutako
kontrolaren arteko ituna. Azkenik, esperientzia horrek
“egitearen indarrera” bideratzen gaitu, non “sistema
egitate praktikoa” baita (Marcelin Pleynet, 1971); izae-
ra enpirikoko inspirazio batek artista menderatzen du
modu inkontzientean, eta, aldi berean, subjektuaren
esperientzia dramatikoa askatzen du.
Era horretan, emaitzak bere gauzatzearen pro-
zesu materialak erakusten du, gertaerak, akzidenteak.
Berehalako materialtasun bat, era desberdineko
euskarriak erabiltzen dituena ezinbestean. Ez dago
arau finkorik, baizik eta artistak adierazi nahi duen
ideiaren zerbitzura jarritako bitartekoak. Aski da adie-
razpen-helburuekin gauzatutako esperimentazioak
asmamena estimulatzea eta, halaber, nolabaiteko bat-
bateko intuiziozko errebelazioa lortzea gauzen izaerari
buruz. Askatasun hori lagungarria da arauzkotasun te-
knikoan ez jausteko, “babes-teknikan” ez jausteko,
azpiegitura tekniko mardula duten praktikei maiz ger-
tatzen zaien bezala. Arteak kontrakoa eskatzen du,
hau da, balio-aniztasuna eta espiritu malgutasuna,
hasieratik beretik, prestakuntzaren oinarrian.

BERNIA is the name of a research project carried
out by the artistic group made up of Mario-Paul
Martínez Fabre, Joan Llobell, Emilio Roselló, Alfonso
Sánchez-Luna, Pilar Viviente, and coordinated by Pilar
Escanero. From painting with tempera to digital pho-
tography, from the brush stroke on canvas to the pixel
or the installation with branches or gold leaf, for these
artists, an image is created by means of a skill, an
ability and an attitude that have to do with the stroke,
whether on paper, on the wall, on the floor or on an
object. The object of their research is the support as a
formal and conforming element.
Every image is produced by the stroke or mark
conceived on the medium, its epiphany or manifesta-
tion occurs on it. The medium sustains and contains
the load of what is recorded. It supports the image, or
better yet, it supports the epiphany of every image.
We can distinguish support material by:
· Kind: - paper, cardboard, parchment, canvas, stone, etc.
· Texture: - smooth (that supports or allows a
greater tonal range)
- granular (that gives a broken stroke,
that absorbs or rejects)
- glossy (with lime, tense, that needs
pressure).
· Color: - light
- dyed
- tone (from light to dark “chiaoscuro”,
tone may be used to give shape or
create atmosphere).
The encounter between the graphic medium and
the support emphasizes, to a different degree, both
the kind of medium as well as the texture of the paper
or support.
While ships roam on the support of the sea, me-
dia of different keels and holds plow the paper. There
are engravings of types of ships and moorings simi-
liar to the types of quills that navigate different fluids
and plow seas of cold or choppy or frozen waters. The
support is more than a ledge or a shelf, it is a funda-
mental element in the development of the register:
only on or against it, does the register (of a creative
impulse, the artist’s pulse) become reality.
How the line and the mark are conceived on a
medium must be studied. And also, how the medium
sustains or trans-ports the load of this register, of this
scanning of which every artistic gaze consists. For that
reason, there is no epiphany in the drawing, its mani-
festation does not exist if there is no medium on which
it may be engendered and on which it may feed.
The work that these artists present is the indivi-
dual work of each one, with different motivations and
techniques, but the sense of the image always arises
as a disegno, both as the stroke that flows as well as a
form of thought,
as instrument and support,
as the place where the basic image appears and
as the meeting place for a dialogue between thought
and hand.
It is not presented as a didactic exhibition but rather
as a reflection on the Pictorial Fact, on the Image in
Painting and in the New Media.

THE SUPPORT AS PATH OF INVESTIGATION
50
In the year 30 BC, in his treatise on the orders,
the Roman architect Vitruvius said of his craft: “Let
the architect be skilful with the pencil and have a
knowledge of drawing so that he can readily make
sketches to show the appearance of the work which
he proposes”. Vitruvius thus handed down an expla-
nation of the use of drawing as an element which can
be simply and quickly worked with and how it can gi-
ve us the appearance of reality. He speaks of drawing
as something spontaneous and communicative.
Two thousand and thirty-eight years on from Vi-
truvius’ statement, drawing continues to be basically
just how he understood it, with slight variations with
the passing of the years, among which the fact that it
has become a “universal language”, as is the case with
“sign language” (which is an official language in Spain,
according to the law that recognises and regulates
Spanish and regional sign language, as well as the su-
pport means for oral communication). The latter has
been the subject of research in the USA with prima-
tes such as Washoe, a chimpanzee born in Africa and
brought up in Washington state in a similar environ-
ment to a deaf and dumb girl, who, according to its
carers, was able to learn 250 words of American sign
language and also teach it to the two younger chim-
panzees. But not only drawing or signs are universal
languages; so is music, as are the works of Alfonso,
Emilio, Joan, Pilar and Mario Paul. Which begs the fo-
llowing question: If these languages are universal,
how does the human brain understand them?
All of which seems to me somewhat disturbing, if
we accept that these days communication is the ar-
tillery in a hard-fought battle. We therefore need
a simple language capable of interweaving itself
around any support; a medium that is able to transmit
experiences; this is when the full and endless me-
aning of communication becomes clear. A great chain
has been created with it able to unite, encompass, jo-
in, enclose, incorporate… endless experiences.
If we turn to the work carried out by Alfonso Sán-
chez Luna, “Pressure and Tempera for the Myth”, we
find ourselves utterly overwhelmed by a spirituality
that borders on mysticism, able to overcome barriers
of time and space which would otherwise be human-
ly insurmountable, as we approach the environment
that he has created and generated. I am impressed
by his respect for the material that he works with, as
well as his poetically-charged intuition which has ro-
om for surprise and chance to so give life, through the
support, to a complete illusion that seems real. His
values match the conceptual self-sufficiency of the
setting, through which we feel experiences that have
been generated by his drawn verses. Alfonso naviga-
tes weightlessly, with nothing to tie him down to the
ground, perhaps because his work is floating freely,
thanks to the versatility that he is able to grant to his
work.
“The multi-register digital support”, is the reflec-
tion by Emilio Roselló, whose starting point is, as he
says, “’postphotography’ as a support for expressing
and representing the reference of sensorial reality”,
bringing us face-to-face with evocative “image ecdo-
tics”. According to Arheim and Wartegg the point, the
line, the angle and the curve are simple signs, but in
the visual message of photography, the simple signs
could possibly be reduced to the choice of viewpoint.
The communicative language “in se”, leads us to a pre-
established support which in no way scorns its “savoir
faire”, where the chosen elements generate the reality
conceived “a priori” to its existence. We would never
think of those lines by Quevedo from the ballad of the
old women who, looking through a dungheap, comes
across a mirror into which she gazes: Y arrojándole en
(And flinging it to the ground,
said with a callous face: “Whomsoever threw you whe-
re you now lie knew his business well. Ladies, should
what thus came to pass happen to you, you would be
better to throw away your face, since the fault with
the mirror does not lie.)
Joan Llobell in “The line as an expression of inti-
macy” reveals the obscurantism of his artistic ego,
DRAWING AND ITS SUPPORTS
51
showing himself to be, in his own words, “emotional
and intuitive”. Aristides says, in Benavente’s play “Los
andrajos de la púrpura” (“The Purple Tatters”), “The pu-
blic understands as long as it excites them”. Along the
same lines as Lamartine: Excitement is the conviction
of the masses. However, Llobell does not make art to
be understood or to foster emotions; he transgresses,
twists reality in an attempt to bring it closer to the su-
pernatural, to the sacred, hoping that contemplation
will bring him ecstasy. Communication is open to be-
ing used as if it were a funnel. This leads him to use
a language that may or may not be understood, de-
pending on the vulnerability of the spectator. In his
constant attempt to join the interior and the exterior,
he prioritises the line (as previously stated, a simple
sign) as the nexus between them. Spirit and reality,
emptiness and presence, within and without.
In her dissertation “Representations”, Pilar Viviente
speaks of the variability of supports and techniques,
using this in her tireless search for self-awareness. As
she says herself, “Whatever the support, experimenta-
tion with supports is done for expressive purposes....
What we see, feel and think affects the treatment of
the image, the technique employed and its effects on
the artistic support.” In this restlessness that accom-
panies all her work, in the search to give form to her
own concerns, we can understand the value given to
an element as pliable as drawing, which cannot be
bound to one field only, and so is valued as the inte-
grating factor of the different inherent areas of art.
In the case of Mario-Paul Martínez Fabre in his re-
flection “Blur Storyboard”, he conveys the unifying
power (despite the marked differences in his work) of
drawing. In the same way he says, “as for artistic pro-
duction, a large part of my work also addresses this
need to ensure the support as a key figure in the crea-
tive dilemma posed by the dialogue between drawing
and technological formats”. If we bear in mind the
number of times that drawing has wrongly been
taken as an auxiliary element of painting or architec-
ture, it is heartening to see how the work of Mario
Paul manifests intense communication between two
media (drawing and technological formats) that art
vulgarly and usually regards as incompatible. It is as
if in Vitrubius’ past, when it had already been given an
important role, the drawing had acquired unexpected
protagonism, and just when it had achieved irresisti-
ble strength, it seemed to begin its decline.
On this occasion, drawing and the support have
helped us to reflect on the existing inter-communica-
tion between them, starting from the works of these
apparently unrelated artists but which, however, co-
me together in the search for a common goal.

Looking back over my recent artistic output, I can
identify a series of constant themes which make it
into a unified body which brings together a notable
variety of technical media and above all supports,
ranging from two-dimensional work on canvas and
paper to installation and intervention. In the for-
mal aspect one can perceive the use of the line in an
important number of my works, acquiring prime im-
portance as a symbolic representation of intimate
realities beyond the reach of the world of logic or ra-
tional discourse. The line confers an immaterial aspect
to these representations, while it can be understood
as a representation of the minimum, of the essence
of things, where what is sacred may reveal itself. A li-
ne which can only come from the support, from its
awakening from the support, “reunited with it”. As our
most intimate reality, it is inseparable from the exter-
nal reality with which we form a Whole where subject
and object become one.
In my work carried out on pictorial support, the li-
ne or metallic “thread” of gold, copper or silver gives
shape to complex, organic forms that can be poe-
tic images of the transcendental which becomes
immanent in all that surrounds us and within us. The-
se elements of an openly symbolic content emanate
a luminosity that contrasts with the dark tones of the
monochrome backgrounds in reddish ochre or blue,
delivering us into a serene emptiness, prompting us
to recollection and silence.
The symbols of bow, knot and rope are present in
the “S.T.” intervention carried out with mixed media
and gold leaf in the Divina Pastora de Teulada hermi-
tage, which could be interpreted as the doorway to
mystery. These poetic images are also present in other
three-dimensional supports, such as the large-scale
installation, “Lligam Lluminós”, held in the University
of Alicante Museum. The line in this work is transfor-
med into a three-dimensional rope covered in gold
leaf, forming a tangle that could be understood as a
representation of the connection between everything
that exists in the Universe and the link that identifies
us with it.
Nature itself is also conceived as a support in so-
me of my recent works, such as in the intervention,
“Llàgrimes llampants” carried out in the woods around
Denia Castle. On this occasion the line becomes ima-
ges of light consisting of the reflections of the sun in
thirty-five mobile mirrors in the form of tears or drops
of water. Light, associated with spiritual illumination,
is another of the recurring relevant symbolic elements
in my visual creation, where some luminous element
always stands out from the shadow that leads us to
contemplation.
All the aforementioned in reference to my vi-
sual creation is also reflected, in different categories
of supports and techniques, in the works from the
exhibition, “Senders” at l’Espai d’Art La Llotgeta in
Valencia. The installation, “Fageda”, carried out with
eighty three-metre tall painted branches, is a good
example of the attraction that nature holds for me.
The link between art and nature is relevant in the vi-
sual creation of our time. The experience of walking
in a natural setting, in the hills, is an experience that
goes beyond aesthetics and enters the realm of the
supernatural. In nature we sense a presence that gi-
ves us a feeling of fullness and oneness with all that
surrounds us, something that, throughout history, nu-
merous philosophies and religious movements from
all over the world have pointed to.
“Oceà”, a large-scale painting measuring 770 x 200
cm, is the title of another of the works from “Senders”.
There is a clear visual continuity with my pictorial
output from 2004, with dark bluish backgrounds
and drawings made with different metals. This back-
ground, the painted support on canvas, evokes
something ethereal or some liquid element such as
water. To give a key towards its interpretation, albeit
open-ended, the ocean has been used as a symbolic
image by some spiritual traditions of humanity to
refer to reality, to the totality of existence. The human
being could be understood metaphorically as a sin-
gle drop within a boundless body of water. Thus the
minute, referring to the individual reality of human
beings, is identified with the Whole, diluted in an
infinite emptiness.
We could regard “Univers”, which bears some
conceptual and formal similarities with the aforemen-
tioned installation, “Lligam Lluminós” in a similar way.
THE LINE AS AN EXPRESSION OF INTIMACY
53
In this case the line is transformed into a kind of net
or mesh made, as an act of meditation, with torn pa-
per, assembled by hand. The nothingness that the
support of many of my works evokes is replaced on
this occasion by the empty space of the room whe-
re the installation can be seen. The religious feeling of
this work is given by the fact that it resembles a latti-
ce window that lets us glimpse behind it an aspect of
reality that remains veiled or hidden.
What I demand of art is that it provides me with an
experience and an insight into intense and profound
reality, at a time in history dominated by the superfi-
cial and the banal in feeling and living. In this sense,
we may refer to the proximity between visual creation
and mysticism. Far from what it may seem, this vision
of art does not set out to foster an escapist attitude,
but would rather live more aware, more conscious-
ly and more awake. Visual creation can make us feel
more present in the world, what perhaps Saint Tere-
sa de Jesús, from her cultural tradition, interpreted
as seeing God among the pots and pans. As a reac-
tion to banality, present-day artists such as Bill Viola or
Antoni Tàpies feel that our society should value con-
templation, understood as a deeper way of perceiving
and living existence, which could have a highly positi-
ve repercussion on all aspects of everyday life.
Throughout history, one of art’s most basic purpo-
ses has been to express the human need to become
more aware of those aspects of reality and of our own
beings that remain hidden, which are not visible or
comprehensible from a purely rational or logical stan-
dpoint. Religiousness and art reveal the innate human
tendency to question existence, along a road to disco-
very with no definitive answers.

Taking stock, despite the strong technological pre-
sence that persists in my latest work, I find it difficult
to distinguish a productive period when drawing in
its most basic sense, which is to say a graphic arran-
gement carried out upon a support, has not played
a relevant part at the heart of my creative processes.
Either I have not known how or have not wished to
dissociate myself from primary models of perception
and execution, deeply rooted in my work since its
outset and which, in the long run, have consolidated
themselves as a necessary link between the artistic
history and tradition behind me and the ideology that
I myself have constructed via personal experimenta-
tion and the influences of the contemporary context.
The classic balance between concept and form has
been reflected in a parallel enigma between drawing
and support, focused, in the majority of cases, around
the turning point formed when they overlapped the
technological spectrum. In this context, between the
old and new media, a slight distinction should be ma-
de between the work I do as an illustrator and that
carried out for purely artistic purposes.
I have focused on illustration, chiefly of articles and
books, and the formats which each one offers me, as a
space for exchange and connection between the ana-
logical constructions and supports offered by vehicles
such as, for example, pencil drawings or waterco-
lours, and those other so-called digital ones such as
infographics or latest-generation photography, which
alongside the former, may help me to define new vi-
sual realities.
Beyond what may seem, at first sight, an effort
to make an aesthetic link with the present-day con-
text, there lies an attempt to establish a concrete
architecture unique to this dialogue. A structure that
legitimises its modus operandi via a reconsideration of
the setting which acts as a model and whose ultimate
purpose is its consolidation alongside the accompan-
ying text.
As regards my artistic output, a significant part of
my work also addresses this need to ensure the su-
pport as a key figure in the creative dilemma posed
by the dialogue between drawing and technological
formats.
The obvious difference between the illustrated mo-
dels arises from a characteristic discourse that deals
with this dilemma in greater depth and which acts as
the basis for other critical questions. Two works clearly
follow the example of this correspondence: “Sin No-
ticias de Mí/Cartografía Hacia lo Último (No News of
Me/A Map to the End)”, and “Storyboard Desenfoca-
do (Blur Storyboard)”. In both cases, videoanimation is
projected upon paper supports, blending various le-
vels of formal materialisation.
In the first of these, the support forms the reality
of a dissolution, a drawing of a human trunk as ephe-
meral as the paper which bears it, upon which are
projected arms which are trying to find it.
In the second work, a set of floating panels act as the
stage (frames) upon which a series of projected cha-
racters wander, only fully materialising when, within
the parameters of the script, they briefly attain a state
of graphic lucidity and focus.

The interaction of the conformant of the image
with the support is relevant in the construction of
the message, or as Marshall MacLuhan said, “the me-
dium is the message”. We wish to reflect in this project
our personal contribution to the field of post-photo-
graphy as a support for expressing and representing
the reference of sensorial reality. We tackle photo-
graphy by bearing in mind the statement of Jerry N.
Uelsmann, who said, “The camera is a fluid way of en-
countering that other reality”, setting out to reflect
on this digital register that prepares the encounter
between the conformant light and other surfaces to
register the information. The conformant light is the
principal working medium from which we extract the
information we deem relevant for this other visually
editable reality.
Digital photography belongs to the field of images
registered by transformation. According to Justo Villa-
fañe Gallego (in Introduction to Image Theory, Ediciones
Pirámide, Madrid 1988) all systems of registering ima-
ges combine two types of elements: the support,
which is the material responsible for registering the
image; and the conformant, which materially forms
the image. The different systems of register arise as a
result of the interaction between these two elements.
Digital photography or image gives rise to the
communion between multiple supports; from its di-
gitally encoded immaterial status it forms a working
medium for configuration of the conformant and in-
terface with different support or register systems. We
refer to the following:
• Transformation registers: photochemical, optical
digital, acoustic digital.
• Addition registers: Ink-jet printing, micro-
pigment or pigmented ink-jet printing, thermal
printing, laser and photosensitive printing.
• Modelling registers: Three-dimensional printing.
The register systems explain the formal and per-
ceptive processes, which allow the existence of
different iconic expressions. Studying them offers spe-
cific awareness of each type of image, for its correct
structuring as a sign and, in turn, as part of a visual
message.
The work is constructed via various processes that
I develop by phases that I call pre-click and post-click,
where the former is the taking of a portion of reali-
ty and the latter the taking of decisions and carrying
them out to shape the image of the referent and fi-
nally prepare the suitable encounter with the final
support of the work.
We conceive our action of taking photographs as
an attitude of intuitive intellectual pre-encounter.
The intention is that only our own experience and
personal Umwelt are the agents intervening as cons-
cious intelligence. Nothing is prepared at the scene,
nothing is faked; only the options traditionally allo-
wed by the camera take part, the choice of viewpoint
for the composition making a conscious selection of
what we show and what we are isolating to specify
the space of the fragment that will remain trapped
and registered in the “deposit of the real”.
The concept of photography as a “deposit of the
real” was coined by Rosalind Krauss; the interpreta-
tion offered here is our own, using it as a metaphor for
the process. As regards the way the reference point is
taken, and according to the aforementioned, it is only
formed at this stage by the factors that prepare and
stimulate the mechanism that triggers the moment of
the click where this initial process ends.
At this stage and in this sense we respect reali-
ty as a document of the referent. For this deposit or
container, we technically use wider ranges of colour
than those that the final support can capture or inter-
pret, -a parallel concept to the present medium and
system, where the saturation of information is hard to
grasp due to its size. As a result we can subsequently
carry out a synthesis and stripping away of this visual
information so as to be able to present that which we
judge to be relevant for the message and at the same
time lets us form the skin which is feasible to reprodu-
ce in the final support.
THE MULTI-REGISTER DIGITAL SUPPORT
57
As regards the subject matter, we chiefly focus on
scenarios of public spaces where the human figure
presents joint actions from a viewpoint of gestaltist
unity. It is located in common contexts of what is
known as high or low-brow culture which corres-
pond, respectively, to the context in which we work
and move and the sector (recreational-tourist) which
we inhabit or live in. Occasionally they blend into the
major cultural circuits where they can be observed
“in another manner” as a collective spectacle, place of
encounter and cross-culturalism.
The post-click process constitutes the decision-ma-
king that transforms the conformant. This enables the
realm of the visible to be considerably broadened.
From the saturation of visual information provided for
by digital file supports such as RAW or HDR we are gi-
ven the possibility of choosing to adjust, balance or
detach, etc. different layers of the referent. RAW is a di-
gital image file format that contains all the data of the
“raw” image exactly as captured by the digital sensor
of the camera. HDR stands for “High Dynamic Range”.
This processing technology imitates the working of
the human eye in the sense that it allows the infor-
mation to be integrated and the different luminosities
to be shown in the same way that we do when going
from an illuminated area to a dark one and vice-versa.
Using HDR techniques we attempt to rectify this fai-
ling in photography by managing to correctly record
all the areas even though they may contain very diffe-
rent “quantities of light”.
The limited masking, the interactions between
information channels, the transfer of data between
layers and the multipurpose done/undo actions cons-
titute the decision-making that will form the resulting
image, but without losing the reference point or at
least maintaining it at some level of photographic rea-
lism. In this respect, the technical processes that the
values of the image from the sRGB or RGB camera are
customised in each image with various input/output
devices calibrated previously via their respective colo-
ur ranges and profiles.
We can ensure with a certain fidelity that what is vi-
sible on the screen will coincide with a previously
decided support. We should underline the importan-
ce of the conformant light in which we decide what
we show of the referent and how we do so, so that
the conformant lets us generate the language from its
native electronic support and subsequently use the
process of encounter with the knowledge of the limi-
tations of the final medium or support.
The darkroom has turned into something more
illuminated. In this lightroom the conformant light be-
comes the main working support which deals with the
process of extracting the information from the “depo-
sit of the real” formed by the digital file (or negative).
For the encounter between the light and the pa-
per, the photographic industry offers standard size
paper with standardised chemical processes and fi-
nishes. The range is limited, especially if we compare
it with the great variety and wealth of materials upon
which photographs can be obtained. But if we enter
the new digital world, we find a new unexplored pa-
th as regards the different types of output (supports).
The pigmented or micropigment ink-jet printing sys-
tems are the best option today, since they give us the
possibility of using a wide variety of acid-free papers
and much greater durability than otherwise offered
by photo-chemical printing.
From the point of view of photographic picto-
rialism, we seek to capture that state of transition
between what is real and what is virtual. We give an
ironic display of the “new values”, that substitute those
that came earlier, now practically outdated or partly
discarded or undervalued. The system of the medium
is made explicit as a programmed “operating system”
which lets us interact with the different roles of this
“global console” in its diverse genres and technolo-
gies. What is human is shown as a reincarnated avatar
immersed in the system.

his portraits of skin, from the series “Corporate skins”, photo-

strategies used by the pictorialists, shaping photography accor-
ding to the will of the artist.

Reflection on the concept of the support (in my
work) is based on a very concrete creative process in
my artistic career. It is the work collected and exhibi-
ted under the title “Crisólitos”. The central part of this
visual project develops a series on paper that is ba-
sed on drawing as a strategy that defines the image in
the work of art (the compositional structure, the con-
ception of the form, etc.). The works can be used as a
source of reflection, proposing, through the drawings,
the visual language as a promethean action of the
creator (the combative attitude of creation of the new
and “improbable”) and outlining how the composition
is assembled from the suggestions of the materials
used in the drawing, combining what we call the “gra-
phic past” with the sensibility of the line.
This series of works came about in keeping with
an artistic trajectory which has seen the maturing of a
creative language formed by the material (visual) qua-
lity of the engraving, both from the symbol and from
the imprint. I have attempted to apply these values
to works where the mixture between the image and
the pictorial medium crosses over, opening up ample
fields for experimentation.
In addition, this creative project is conceived from
a starting point, that of the visual as poetic, or in its
relationship with specific poetry. I found the spark of
my plastic art in mythological lyricism, carrying out
a series of works on paper directly inspired by Ovid’s
Metamorphoses, with all its evocative content, full of
suggestions. The title of my project “Crisólitos” was
suggested to me by a strange mineral, the chrysoli-
thus, (Metamorphosis, book II, verse 110) that adorns
Apollo’s chariot: “[…] Along the yoke chrysolites and
gemstones, set in order, glowed with brilliance reflec-
ting Phoebus’s own light”. This gem that “captures” the
Apollonian light, which for the Greeks illuminated the
inner darkness of Man, acted as a “touchstone” and
metaphor for the energy that should be or that I wish
to set down in my work. Conceptually, my visual ima-
ges arise from evocative poetic images. That of Ovid
is a cosmogony that poeticises the transformation of
gods into rivers, rain, mountains, animals or chime-
ras and of the multiple ways that these determine the
mortals (by means of passion, love, hate, envy, reven-
ge, etc.), as an ineffable demonstration of mysterious
nature in the destiny of the human being.
The full sense of each of the works can be seen in
the accompanying verses by Ovid. In fact, the “trigger”
of my creative process consisted of the inquiry into
the suggestions of the poem, in order to place myself
before the paper and sketch out an approach to the
spirit of the verses. The working methods that I have
followed attempt to bring together the spontaneity
of the drawing in the notebook with the sketch that
structures the composition -ideas resolved via the gra-
phics of the coloured pencils and watercolours-. All at
the expense of a subsequent procedure that integra-
tes painting and engraving to definitively construct
the work.
Following the first exploratory drawings on the
poem, the work is set out with the intention of kee-
ping a balance which, with the presence of gesture,
does not upset the “epiphanic” sense of the expres-
sion. I try to combine the autonomy of the image with
a certain power of representation beyond the distinc-
tions between abstraction and figuration.
The technique is chosen in order to provide the
evocative power of the mark, using chance to catalyse
the subjective. In this sense it is the craft of engraver
that has made me decide on monotyping as the me-
dium that best lets me carry out a “graphic past” upon
paper, either by way of prior engraving or final crea-
tion medium as can be seen in the work Los Hados se
me anticipan y me impiden hablar (The Fates prevent
me and forbid me further speech).
The technique of monotyping consists of mixing
the colour on a non-porous matrix (sheet of plastic
or glass) without fixing it, letting the pressure of the
PRESSURE AND TEMPERA FOR THE MYTH
59
printing press itself mould the stains and marks of the
pressing; in this way various sheets are pressed, pre-
paring them to be worked on with drawing or paint.
The absorption of the paper and the chance distribu-
tion of the colour allows me to read the pressing as
a challenge to the encounter of possible associations
underlying what is merely morphological.
The graphical-pictorial medium determines the
manner in which the image is constructed, bearing
in mind that the visual language that I develop re-
quires a pictorial medium capable of letting me play
with different levels of transparency and opacity of
colour, which is why I incline towards tempera paint.
The poetry and sensuality of the reflection of light on
the plain surface of paper tinted by pigment makes
egg tempera the ideal agglutinant to paint with glaze
using different colour saturations.
It is also a water-based technique that enables the
rapid capture of gesture, while conserving a vibra-
tion of colour similar to that given by oil techniques.
I needed a tempera that would be able to offer me
the qualities of density and plasticity so as to make a
mixture at will without modifying the essence of the
pictorial material employed: I was given the solution
by the lecturer in the Faculty of Fine Arts in Valencia,
Domingo Oliver Rubio, expert in painting aggluti-
nants. He recommended mixing the egg tempera base
with a resin which would give the agglutinant more
“body”, so as to be able to model the paint substance
with a brush or spatula depending on the concentra-
tion of the resin.
Making the most of my wide experience with re-
sinous tempera, in the majority of my works I have
applied a graphic substratum, a preliminary prepara-
tion using monotypes made with tempera and resin.
Other times I leave the traces of the diluted paint
suspended on the paper, so that it is the drying pro-
cess that determines the form and concentration of
the stains of colour as in the work Para que la llanura
marina conociera vuestra preocupación, deseasteis po-
der posaros sobre las olas (So the marine plain would
know of your distress, you wished to be able to alight
upon the waves). The result is a work that flows, let-
ting itself be swayed by the musical resonances of the
verse, in such a way that the image is presented to the
viewer little by little, by “slow divination”, evoking a
cartography that is more sensual than iconography.
The plastic work, formed via the metaphors of
Ovid’s verses, attempts to show or display the artist’s
intimate perception that something essential “is be-
yond our reach”: something that gives life to or travels
within a mesh of brushstrokes with the textured pulse
of pigments and resins, dragged there to tread upon
the surface. In short, this is to draw between the light,
the water and the wound in the paper.

60
This text is a study of the support in my latest ar-
tistic works, centred on the relationships between the
graphics (drawing) and the artistic support, and on the
close relationship of both the technique employed.
Why overlay? Why proceed with incisive or additive
procedures on the surface? Why not dye? Immersing
paper in oils may substitute the traditional procedu-
re of adding layers of colour. Oiled paper should be
of little body, permeable, with not much glue and
thoroughly moistened. This procedure reveals the
transparency of the support or paper. Additionally, if
the colour partially covers the treated surface it offers
a lighter result, since the support is materially assi-
milated by the surface, modifying the identity of the
support and the surface as independent entities.
What is important is the materiality of the support,
the light and the colour. The effects obtained with an
oiled paper let us see the different moments in the
work’s production and the earlier lines that acted as
inspiration for the later ones. Drawing lines on this
translucent support also enable the work to be looked
at on either of its sides; the front and back are inter-
changeable, reversible. In addition, the unity of the
support with the surface helps the passage from a
two-dimensional support to a three-dimensional one.
The oil technique is used on canvas stretched over
a frame with the same intention. It easily assimilates
tachisme, action painting and the sign with its rapid,
unequal, spontaneous and definitive strokes, the was-
hes ambiguous and the outlines diffuse, the entire
universe of fluids which gives life to the support incor-
porating the drawing into its very materiality.
The search for the immediate materiality extends
to various supports, underlining the objectual nature
of the work. Materials as diverse as paper or metal can
give rise to similar effects. Whether it be oiled paper
(dyed paper) or sculptures, “sculpaintings” (pictorial/
graphic treatment of metal surfaces), both suppor-
ts register uncertainties, accidents, chance findings,
changes, bear living imprints. Oiled paper speaks of
the act of painting as a support made uneven by im-
mersion. The pictorial procedures derived from the
metal support “by chemical alteration” of the (metal)
surface by means of corrosives, acids, oils and other
chemical substances absorb, in the act of painting,
the specific qualities of the metal. The difference that
the additive or layered pictorial procedures establish
between the work’s support and the paint is thus avoi-
ded. The surface assimilates the expression of what is
alive, the flow of chemistry, the accidents of the mate-
rial, everything that is fluid, the playfulness, the joy of
being and creating. This is the material reality of the
support. The plate is later protected by varnishes.
In Cuerpo magenta (Magenta body), 2008 (paint on
iron, 190 x 130 x 20 cm) the ornamental motif was ca-
rried out with templates and spray, graphic techniques
belonging to the multiple effect offered by a principle
of thematic and compositional cohesion by means of
repetition. Metal as support is studied in detail in a
previous publication on new sculptural procedure.
Elsewhere, my resorting to photography does not
seek the mass-production of photographic work but
the creation of originals, as is the case of the stamping
procedure utilised. Photography as a multiple image is
later treated manually (drawing and painting). In this
case, drawing, for me, means composing with diver-
se supports, jointly putting materials associated with
different means of expression, as in El espíritu de las
ciudades (The spirit of the cities), 70 x 50 cm, 2008. The
camera captures a representation (dihedral, axonome-
tric, perspective) which is later processed digitally to
modify the initial image. The use of infographics sets
out to shift this photographic image that reproduces
the outlines of the visible objects towards a new visual
reality. Photography is the starting point before the fi-
nal image, artistic support of computer graphics and
graphic/pictorial “writing”, of both digital and manual.
As an artistic support, digital photography enables
REPRESENTATIONS
61
the subsequent digital processing of the image, a pro-
cess open to later interventions by pencil or brush.
Whatever the support, experimentation with su-
pports is done for expressive purposes. From the
artist’s point of view, art is the process whereby we
articulate an inner experience. It involves an interior,
cerebral, perceptive process. What we see, feel and
think affects the treatment of the image, the techni-
que employed and its effects on the artistic support.
We have worked on different supports with diverse
techniques where the drawing (graphic) may or may
not have an intentional meaning, is or is not a langua-
ge, is the language of the body and of the intellect,
is imprint and is construction, is personal self-explora-
tion and also exploration of the outside world.
Roger de Piles’ definition of drawing comes to
mind: “Primarily, the word ‘drawing’ is given to the idea
of a picture that the painter puts down on paper or on
a canvas to evaluate the work that he is meditating
upon”. The action, then, is followed by the meditation.
However, “What matters is not the copy of reality, but
approaching pure creation by means of a concept of
technique that implies the use of the ‘controlled acci-
dent’: alliance between chance (natural element) and
the control exercised by the human factor”. Finally,
this experience refers to “the force of doing”, to “the
system as a practical fact” (Marcelin Pleynet, 1971), an
empirical inspiration that unconsciously dominates
the artist, while simultaneously liberating the drama-
tic experience of the subject.
The result thus shows the material process of its
production, the occurrences, the accidents. An imme-
diate materiality that inevitably resorts to a variety of
supports. There are no set rules, just media at the ser-
vice of the idea that the artist wishes to express. It is
enough for experimentation, carried out for expressi-
ve purposes, to stimulate inventiveness and so reach
a kind of instantaneous and intuitive revelation con-
cerning the nature of things. This freedom helps to
avoid falling into technical standardisation, a “techni-
que refuge”, as often occurs in practice with a strong
technical infrastructure. Art, conversely, demands ver-
satility and flexibility of spirit, from the very outset, in
basic training.
