HistoryCentered in the heart of Silicon Valley, BIA is an undergraduate organization at SJSU,

working closely with the faculty and its office members to enhance the

undergraduate experience and meet the needs of the student body. The organization

was created in the Spring of 2009 as the Banking and Financial Services Club. After

merging with Spartan Investors, a new club was made.

MissionWe believe in bringing students together to form a powerful learning environment

through informative speakers, networking opportunities, community involvement,

and exclusive internships that will effectively create financial leaders of the future.

Weekly Meetings

Through our weekly professional development meetings members have the opportunity to listen, speak, and connect with a wide range of industry professions. Industry professional ranges from Commercial Banking to Investment Banking to Venture Capital.

Members have the chance to meet and network with club alumni, club sponsors, and other executives at our social events held at places such as the Capital Club.

Companies such as Bridge Bank, Heritage Bank, and Franklin Templeton has partnered with BIA to allow club members the opportunity to meet and network with executive staff at their locations.

The Center for Banking & Financials Services grants awards based on academic achievements and the BIA offers many exclusive internships for honored scholarly members.

Numerous OpportunitiesOur association offers many chances for learning and mentorship for our members while giving them the tools to become a financial leader.

Members of the association are encouraged to volunteer their time to programs like the March of Dimes. We also help in the SJSU Economic Summit every year where the community is educated on the economic climate. BIA organize the LinkedIn Event where students get professional photos takes for their profile.

Spartan FundA student-managed portfolio

A student-managed investment fund provides students with hands-

on learning experiences in evaluating assets through market,

industry, and corporate analysis.

After the initial $50,000 funding in 2014, the fund was on a purely

volunteer basis but was converted and accredited as an

elective class for SJSU’s Lucas College of Business

Our members were integral to the process of raising funds for

12 Bloomberg Terminals for equity research and individual

certifications.

Undergraduate students are assigned industries that are

composed in the S&P 500, we then analyze and pick stocks of superior

value and use the S&P500 ten sectors to devise the target portfolio

composition to ensure diversification and superior performance.

A fund comprised of student industry analysts, board members, Ex-Officio Advisors, and Nancie Fimbel Investment

Fellows with voting rights given to the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Investment Officer, and Chief Analyst.

Competitive ChallengesStock Market Challenge

The Wall Street Journal MarketWatch.com stock market challenge is a chance for all members to create their own portfolio with fake money but it is simulated in the real market.

CFA ChallengeHosted by the CFA Institute, a challenge where teams of students represent their school. Each team researches and analyzes a publicly traded company and then pitches a buy, sell, or hold recommendation to a panel of industry professionals. Our team proudly won the 2015 SF Institute Challenge against MBA programs and prestigious schools from all over Northern California.

Economist ChallengeA team of students selected, and quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed a $1 billion market cap company to go bankrupt by 2020. They then presented the findings in an Equity Research Report and a video featured on Economist.com.

Challenge Yourself The Banking and Investment Association encourages members to participate in challenges around the Bay Area as well as the world to apply the skills learned in the classroom in real world situations. Additionally, we host our own competitions to better prepare students and provide mentorship.
