Commencement of actual construction on the Basilica is scheduled for May, but some preliminary pieces of the project have been evidenced, for instance, by the removal of the entry arch in December. This was prompted by concerns about the structural stability of the arch but also, coincidentally, it was a necessary condition prerequisite to commencement of work on the Basilica roof, since the entryway will be utilized as the access point for some of the construction equipment. One of our contributors said it so well when he remarked that his donation was prompted by the reflection that: “You are restoring California’s pyramids.” We are indebted to him for this observation and for the donation that he and his wife made along with the donations of our other 400 plus donors. Simply put, none of what we have been able to accomplish this past year would have been possible without you. E IN THE NEWS The Foundation was recognized by the AT&T Tournament’s Birdies for Charity Program as one of the Program’s top charitable organizations, out of a group of almost 100 from the Central Coast and beyond, with an award of a booth located at the Tournament’s Grand Entrance. During our day at “The Pro-Am” we provided fans from around the country with information and material about our Restoration Program.

Over 150 donors to the Tricentennial Campaign for the Restoration of The Carmel Mission have made contributions to be recognized on the Serra Memorial Wall. Conceived as a commemoration of the 300th anniversary in 2013 of Junipero Serra’s birth in 1713 the Wall is designed to honor donations or pledges of $5,000 or more to the restoration campaign on four plaques of 75 names each. The names for the first two plaques have been sent for casting to the Bronze Division of the Matthews Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA. Founded in 1850, the

Matthews Corporation is recognized as the United States’ leading manufacturer of cast bronze memorial products. The Wall has been designed by the architectural firm of Franks Brenkwitz & Associates of Santa Cruz County, architects for the Restoration Project.

A GROUNDBREAKING for the Wall is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. May 1st in the main courtyard. Invitations will be mailed to the donors to the Serra Memorial Wall in the near future.

Memorial Wall Donations Pass Half Way Point!

The following donors have made generous gifts to the Carmel Mission Foundation thru February 15th, 2011. They will be recognized in the Serra Memorial Registry. This handmade bound leather book was commissioned by the Carmel Mission Foundation from noted book-maker and restorer Constance Hunter of Soquel, CA. At the conclusion of the Tricentennial Capital Campaign this book, with its listings of donors to the campaign at any amount, will be housed and on display in California’s first and oldest library. This is of course our very own Serra Library on the Mission grounds. Thank you for your generous and heartwarming support.

IN THE NEWSThe Foundation’s PowerPoint Presentation: “An Architectural History of the Carmel Mission 1770-2010”, was chosen as the initial lecture in the Carmel Library Foundation’s 2011 Lecture series. Nearly 100 people attended the program presented by Sam Wright at the library on Jan 31st. The lecture was recorded by Comcast Channel 24 and broadcast on February 16, 17 and 21. This represents our 5th public presentation of this program and we are pleased to make it available to other organizations. Please call the Foundation office at (831) 624-3261 for details.

Carmel Mission Foundation’s2011 Community Lecture Series “Preserving the Past for Future Generations”Author and historian Neal Hotelling of the Pebble Beach Company will launch the first in our series of lectures on Sunday, March 6th. Neal will trace the late 19th-century transformation of this region into a tourist mecca, with particular focus on connections between the Old Hotel Del Monte – America’s first all-season resort hotel – and the Carmel Mission’s restoration of the 1880’s. As conservator of the Pebble Beach Company archives, Neal’s wealth of knowledge along with access to early documents and photography, will delight fans of early Peninsula history.

After his lecture Neil will be signing copies of his latest book as we enjoy a light refreshment!

Sponsored by the Carmel Mission Foundation as part of its commitment to support historical and artistic exhibits connected to the understanding of the historical importance of early California and the California Mission System.

Sunday, March 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Studio 105, main entrance Sunset Center, Carmel, CA

ADMISSION: Free!

Arch Mementos Available to DonorsWhen the entry Arch at the Mission was removed in December the Foundation preserved all of the original sandstone pieces from the construction debris. These mementos of the Mission’s construction history are roughly fist-size and are available to our donors if you will stop by our office.

CornerstoneDID YOU KNOW?Ronald Reagan took the oath of office as California’s Governor in January 1967 using Junipero Serra’s bible which is housed in the Carmel Mission Library. The Library, California’s first and oldest, contains numerous volumes that Serra brought to California from Mexico in 1769.

Save the Date: Sunday, May 1stDistinguished author and Hearst Castle Historian Victoria Kastner will explore another intriguing set of connections – between Monterey and San Simeon, with particular emphasis on William Randolph Hearst and his talented “Hearst Castle” architect, Julia Morgan.
