Nacer Desde Arriba
En una maravillosa serie de comentarios sobre las Escrituras,
John Shea presenta una historia poderosa sobre lo que
significa nacer de nuevo, nacer desde arriba, como dice Jesús.
Un hombre que conoce, cuenta cómo nació dos veces de la
misma mujer.
La historia de este hombre:
Un día conducía a su anciana madre a un funeral. Ella ya había
estado en muchos funerales, habiendo tenido que enterrar a su
propio esposo, un hermano y la mayoría de sus amigos.
También se encontró sin mucho dinero, con problemas de salud
y al borde de una depresión grave, no exactamente una de las
"Golden Girls" en la cima de su juego, apagando las risas a cada
minuto. Mientras conducían, ella habló sobre su propio funeral
y estaba dando instrucciones sobre cómo quería que se hiciera.

Being Born From Above
In a wonderful series of commentaries on Scripture, John Shea
presents a powerful story on what it means to be born again, to
be born from above, as Jesus says. A man he knows, tells how
he was born twice of the same woman.
This man's story:
One day he was driving his aged mother to a funeral. She had
been already at many funerals, having had to bury her own
husband, a brother, and most of her friends. She also found
herself without much money, in failing health, and on the
edges of a serious depression—not exactly one of the "Golden
Girls" on the top of her game, spinning off laughs by the
minute. As they drove along, she talked about her own funeral
and was giving instructions on how she wanted it done. Then,
quite unexpectedly, she said: “I'm giving up on fear.
Everybody dies. Nothing is left.”
Her son protested, telling her that giving up on fear isn't easy
to do, even as he realized at that very instant how much his
whole life was bound up precisely by fear—fear of sickness,
fear of death, and fear of losing his job, his good name, his
good looks, his status, his friends. He gazed at his mother and
saw that she was beaming. He knew she meant exactly what
she had just said.
They never had that conversation again, but from that moment
on he noticed his mother began to change. She was no longer
afraid to speak her mind on anything, and she spoke it calmly,
wisely, without pomp, with great patience, and with an ever-
growing compassion. She became stronger and more gentle,
both at the same time.

La gente se sentía atraída por ella y le sacaba fuerzas. Su hijo

Nacer de nuevo, renacer desde arriba, no es algo que podamos
hacer, al menos no completamente, en un instante o en un gesto
dramático y religioso, sin importar cuán profunda sea nuestra
sinceridad. Hay algo más complicado que caer a los pies de
algún evangelista o en responder a un llamado al altar, aunque
esto puede ser un comienzo importante.
Nacer de nuevo, desde arriba, implica un proceso de gestación,
es decir, estar conectado a un nuevo cordón umbilical, uno que
comienza a nutrirnos de tal manera que nuestros viejos sistemas
de apoyo (el significado y la seguridad que extraemos de
nuestros logros, éxitos, posesiones materiales, reconocimiento,
buen nombre, buena salud, buena apariencia y atractivo sexual)
ya no son lo que finalmente nos da vida. Todavía queremos
estas cosas, pero ya no construimos nuestras vidas alrededor del
miedo a perderlas. Todavía proporcionan algo de vida y
alimento, pero ahora comenzamos, poco a poco, a extraer vida
de algo más allá de ellos. Nos sentimos enganchados a algo
más profundo, un espíritu y una persona que nos ofrece el
significado que eclipsa lo que tenemos ahora.
Cuanto más comenzamos a extraer vida y alimento de esta
nueva fuente, más comenzamos a renunciar al miedo porque lo

People were attracted to her and drew strength from her. Her
son was one of those people, and he began to visit her more
frequently, now not out of obligation but because he needed
the nourishment she was giving him. It was like a new
umbilical cord had been forged between them. Slowly, just as
she had once given birth to his body, she now gave birth to his
spirit. He felt himself begin to change, to have less fear. This
second gestation took more than nine months, but a new life
was slowly born in him. He was able to “give up on fear” and
move into life with a freedom that, as Jesus says, comes only
from above. (John Shea, Gospel-Light, “Crossroads,” 1998,
pp. 94-95)
To be born again, to be reborn from above, is not something
that we can do, at least not fully, in one instant or in one
dramatic, religious gesture, no matter how deep our sincerity.
There is more involved than falling at the feet of some
evangelist or of answering an altar call, albeit these can be an
important beginning.
To be born again, from above, involves a gestation process,
namely, being hooked up to a new umbilical cord, one that
begins to nurture us in such a way that our old support systems
(the meaning and security we draw from our achievements,
successes, material possessions, recognition, good name, good
health, good looks, and sexual attractiveness) are no longer
what ultimately gives us life. We still want these things, but
we no longer build our lives around the fear of losing them.
They still provide some life and nourishment, but we now
begin, bit by bit, to draw life from something beyond them.
We sense ourselves as hooked to something deeper, a spirit
and a person who offers us the meaning that dwarfs what we
now have.
The more we begin to draw life and nourishment from this new
source, the more we begin to give up on fear because what we
are now receiving is not experienced as precarious, as is the
case with our present meaning and joy. We are being pushed
through a new birth canal and as this happens we begin, little
by little, to sense that in this new place we don't need to
possess things, defend ourselves, cling so desperately to
health, youth, and good looks, or fear that joy and meaning can
be taken away from us. Life in the spirit is not a precarious
thing that can slip away from us like the things of this world.
Like its author, it is immune from threat. We can give up on
fear.
This doesn't happen all at once, although there can be some
dramatic, break-through moments along the way. Being born
again is about seeds growing silently when nobody is
watching, about unseen yeast leavening a batch of dough, and
about an umbilical cord inside a dark womb supplying
nutrients for an unknowing child to grow and be born.
Gestation takes time. Growth works slowly. Life, whether in
the body or in the spirit, has the same dynamics.
The comedian, George Carlin, once quipped that when he was
born, he was so stunned that he couldn't speak for two years!
That, I suspect, is also the case when we are born again.

Vivir la Liturgia — Inspiración de la Semana
La gracia y el pecado se encuentran juntos. Por mucho que
nuestros corazones anhelen la unión con Dios, siempre existe
esa parte de nosotros que se resiste. Por mucho que creo de todo
corazón en Dios, existe una dimensión de incredulidad con la
que también lucho. Aunque podemos buscar pureza e integridad
en todos nuestros pensamientos, palabras y obras, también
existe el camino hacia la debilidad y el pecado que nos
encontramos atravesando. Así como las malas hierbas pueden
sobrepasar fácilmente a los mejores jardines, también la
debilidad y el pecado pueden sobrepasar y abrumar a una
persona. El llamado es darnos cuenta del poder que tienen las
malas hierbas del pecado para sacarnos de la presencia de Dios.
Si bien Dios permite que el trigo y las malas hierbas existan
juntos, debemos mantener nuestros ojos fijos en la misericordia
y el perdón de Dios y resistir la muerte que viene de dar paso al
pecado y al mal. En el tiempo de Dios, vendrá la cosecha eterna,
y ya no tendremos que preocuparnos por las malas hierbas. Por
ahora, debemos estar vigilantes y buscar regularmente la ayuda

Live the Liturgy — Inspiration for the Week
Grace and sin are found together. As much as our hearts long
for union with God, there is always that part of us that resists.
As much as I wholeheartedly believe in God, there is a
dimension of disbelief with which I also wrestle. Even though
we may seek purity and integrity in all of our thoughts, words,
and deeds, there is also the path toward weakness and sin that
we find ourselves traversing. Just as weeds can easily overtake
the best of gardens, so too can weakness and sin overtake and
overwhelm a person. The call is to realize the power the weeds
of sin have to choke us off from God’s presence. While God
allows the wheat and the weeds to exist together, we must keep
our eyes fixed on God’s mercy and forgiveness and resist the
death that comes from giving way to sin and evil. In God’s
time, the eternal harvest will come, and we will no longer have
to worry about the weeds. For now, we must be vigilant and
regularly seek the assistance of the Master Gardener. ©LPi

Do What Needs to Be Done
A friend recently confided in me that
although he prayed frequently each day
and was involved heavily in his parish,
he did not sense much fruit coming
from it all and was left feeling
unsatisfied. I assured him he was not
alone. I told him of a deceased pastor
of mine who had spoken frequently
about being in this type of situation.
Even as a priest, he knew all too well
of how we can feel like we are simply
going through the motions. It is
precisely at those times that continuing
to pray and practicing good
stewardship is most important, because
it would be easier to simply take a
break and risk never coming back. He
liked to say, “Do the drill,” meaning
just do what needs to be done.
We are all called to be mature disciples

Haz lo que Tiene que ser Hecho
Recientemente, un amigo me confió que,
aunque rezaba con frecuencia todos los días
y estaba muy involucrado en su parroquia,
no percibía mucho fruto proveniente de ello
y se sentía insatisfecho. Le aseguré que no
estaba solo. Le conté acerca de un pastor
mío, ya fallecido, que había hablado
frecuentemente sobre estar en este tipo de
situación. Incluso como sacerdote, el sabía
muy bien cómo nosotros podemos sentir que
simplemente la estamos pasando y haciendo
lo de siempre. Es precisamente en esos
momentos que seguir orando y practicar una
buena corresponsabilidad es lo más
importante, porque sería más fácil
simplemente tomar un descanso y
arriesgarse a no volver nunca más. Le
gustaba decir: "Haz el simulacro," es decir,
haz lo que tienes que hacer.
Todos estamos llamados a ser discípulos
maduros que responden al llamado de
Jesucristo sin importar el costo. No
podemos elegir cuándo y dónde vendrá el
llamado. No podemos programar nuestra
corresponsabilidad de una manera que
siempre nos resulte más conveniente.
Incluso cuando los frutos de nuestros fieles
esfuerzos nos parecen ocultos, mantenemos
la promesa de que nunca estamos llamados a
darnos por nada. Dios está trabajando a
través de nosotros y en nosotros. No importa
cuán seca parezca la tierra, las semillas se
están plantando para producir una cosecha
mayor de lo que podemos imaginar.

Some nefarious international con artists are at it again --
establishing and using email accounts in the name of our priests
and even our bishop to illicitly solicit gift cards, money, or
personal information.
To ensure your protection, if you receive a request from one of
our clergy, please verify that it is not a scam by speaking
directly to them or their appropriate staff through known phone
numbers and known email addresses.
Please, NEVER reply to such an email directly, never call any
numbers provided in such an email, never click on any links in
such an email, until you can verify that it is not a fake.
Below are some examples of these types of scams:

Note the gmail address that looks recognizable but on
closer inspection clearly does not belong to our Bishop.
Please also note the poor English and use of slang.

EXAMPLE FAKE EMAIL #2:
Note this one of a series of exchanges between the recipient
and person impersonating a Priest. The person impersonating
the Priest has received a reply from the potential victim and is
trying for the score which is to get them to buy gift cards for a
sympathetic reason. The scammer would then cash them in or
sell them to someone overseas on the “dark web” or in their
location and country.

Scouts from Troop 9 practiced
Social Distancing, to the greatest
extent possible, while whitewater
Rafting on the Watauga River,
Tennessee. The Scouts camped
on the River in separate tents,
prepared their own meals, Rafted,
Hiked Blue Ridge Trails, and
Tubed on the River. The Scouts
earned 2 merit badges and all had
a great time during this time of
focused health habits.
Our NEXT MEETING will be held outdoors at the
Scout hut on July 19
th
from 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM.
This is a big recognition meeting with the following
