Geopolítica
Importancia de la cuenca para Venezuela y el mundo; última frontera de bosques húmedos tropicales que se encuentran en la zona ecuatorial del Trópico Americano, donde convergen Guyana, Suriname, Guyana francesa, Brasil y Colombia.
Económica
Abundantes recursos forestales, mineros e hídricos. El río
Caura aporta un caudal de 3.500 m3 por segundo al río
Orinoco.

La figura jurídica de reserva forestal se refiere a bosques
naturales delimitados para la explotación de maderas con
fines industriales. De acuerdo con la legislación vigente,
esta actividad se práctica a través de concesiones
forestales.
La concesión es una modalidad de aprovechamiento de
los recursos madereros de un bosque público, a través de
permisos de explotación otorgados por el estado en su
mayor parte a empresas privadas.
Para el año 2000 se habían entregado en concesión 3,6
millones de hectáreas en Venezuela, en unidades que
varían entre 30.000 y 200.000 hectáreas.

Se le presenta así a Venezuela una oportunidad
coyuntural, que demanda capacidad de
negociación tanto técnica como diplomática, para
convertir las amenazas que se ciernen sobre un
territorio particularmente rico en biodiversidad y
ecosistemas naturales, la cuenca del río Caura, en
una oportunidad de significativa envergadura para
contribuir a impulsar el desarrollo nacional.
Al mismo tiempo, se realizaría un significativo
aporte a los esfuerzos internacionales por limitar
las emisiones de gas carbónico (CO2) y el
calentamiento global, de acuerdo con las
negociaciones en progreso en el contexto del
Convenio Marco sobre Cambios Climáticos.
