    Dear Prospective Student,

In 1987, I enrolled as a student at Columbia International University. CIU

attracted me because of the universitys heart for reaching the nations with the

    message of Jesus Christ.

During my student years, I learned about CIUs five core values: the Authority of

Scripture, World Evangelization, Prayer & Faith, Victorious Christian Living and

Evangelical Unity. These core values represent the DNA of CIU. They shape

and define us by giving us purpose and passion. Ive never forgotten my stu-dent years here at CIU!

Today, as in 1987, CIU continues its mission of training Christian ministers and

ministering Christians to impact the world with the message of Christ. Your Bible

major, combined with one of 13 professional majors, will equip you to share

    Christ anytime, anywhere.

Your education at CIU will transform you spiritually, physically, mentally and

emotionally. You will gain new friends, new encounters and experience God

anew in different places and at different times.

I invite you to come and spend time on our campus. Walk into our classrooms, talk to our faculty, see our passion, live our core values and experience what its

like to really know Him and make Him known.

This catalog contains information about living and studying at CIU, but it may

not tell you everything you want to know. If we can help you personally, please

call (800) 777-2227 or e-mail the Admissions Office at [email protected] to

discuss your specific needs or questions with one of our counselors.

    Authority of Scripture, World Evagelizatio,

tioal Christia miistries ad i the marketplace

with about 30 percet of CIU graduates workig

    i cross-cultural cotexts.

    Mission

    Columbia Iteratioal Uiversity educates peo-

ple from a biblical worldview to impact the

atios with the message of Christ. The imple-

metatio of this educatioal purpose by theUdergraduate School of Columbia Iteratioal

Uiversity (CIU) is expressed i the followig

statemet: The purpose of udergraduate studies

is to prepare studets to become world

Christias who serve God with excellece i

    cross-cultural, church, marketplace, ad other

    miistry roles.

We pursue this missio as a post-secodary aca-

demic commuity modelig, metorig ad moti-

vatig studets to cultivate spiritual vitality adcharacter formatio, to acquire kowledge i bib-

lical cotet ad gai iterpretatio skills, to

develop competece as critical thikers ad

    commuicators, to formulate a comprehesive

biblical worldview for themselves, ad to explore

ad iitiate experieces that are miistry-focused,

    based o their callig.

Our purpose is summarized i our motto, To

kow Him ad to make Him kow. Both the

curriculum ad the commuity life at CIU are

itetioally desiged to stimulate a dyamiccotext i which each studet is assisted ad

ecouraged to pursue the followig istitutioal

    goals:

Kow Christ by learig submissio to His

Lordship ad depedece o the Holy Spirit,

thus makig progress i coformig to His

    image.

Kow the Word by gaiig mastery of its co-

tet ad uderstadig of its meaig, by

assimilatig ad applyig its truth, ad by

developig skill i the use of study tools.

Kow oeself by a icreasig awareess of

spiritual gifts, persoality types, ad persoal

    potetial.

Kow people by becomig sesitive to their

eeds ad the cotexts i which they live, ad

by improvig commuicatio with them, what-

    ever their cultures.

Kow the skills required i a particular area of

miistry. By miistry we cosciously ad

itetioally iclude those who are called by

God to miister i ad through professioal dis-

ciplies - whether i commuicatio, educatio,

    psychology, or other professioal disciplies

where traiig programs are beig developed.

I additio to the faculty, the uiversity provides

resources for learig, the icetives, ad the

    curricular guidace ecessary for progress

toward these goals. We expect studets to be

active participats i the spiritual, academic,

social, ad physical dimesios of college life. As

they do, they come to kow Him better ad are

able to make Him kow more effectively. We

believe that Gods purpose for Columbia

Iteratioal Uiversity istitutioally, ad for its

faculty ad studets idividually, is achieved olyby the superatural work of the Holy Spirit

    through yielded believers.

Philosophy of Education, Goals andFaculty Responsibilities

    A ovvw

The basic educatioal philosophy of Columbia

Iteratioal Uiversity is derived from two

essetial goals, oe persoal ad oe vocatioal.

A Pal Gal: We desire growth i persoality, character, spiritual maturity, ad kowledge. At

    Columbia Iteratioal Uiversity, our objective

experietially is to kow God ad become

icreasigly like His so, Jesus Christ. To become

like Christ implies that we kow who He is. Our

kowledge of Christ has two dimesios: to kow

all we may kow about Him cogitively, ad to

kow Him i itimate relatioship experietially.

We know God because he has revealed Himself.

God has revealed Himself through general revela-

tion (the creation and its order), through special

revelation (the Bible), and through his Son Jesus

Christ (the Incarnation). General revelation reveals

Gods world as it is (reality); it declares His glory.

Special revelation reveals Gods character, manssin problem, and Gods solution for mans problem

(salvation as a free gift). Christ Incarnate reveals

the relationship dynamics of the Trinitarian God

and His desire for a reconciled relationship with

mankind as well as healthy relationships among

mankind. On these three aspects of Gods revela-

tion of Himself, the Bible serves as the core cur-

riculum; Scripture is our ultimate authority as we

    explore all realms of knowledge.

A Vocational Goal:We design professional pro-grams to enable students to fulfill, as effectively as

their potential will allow, Gods purpose or calling

for their lives. We prepare students for various

vocational responsibilities, whether they serve God

in their home country or in a cross-cultural setting.

We also understand that vocational responsibility

must always come with a balance of home, church

    and other community responsibilities. Fulfilling

ones responsibilities in a godly, balanced way is

our reasonable ministry (service); this perspective

is equally true whether one serves in a vocationalministry position or in a volunteer ministry position.

We believe God has given us everything we need

for life and godliness and that the best spiritual

leaders are those who submit completely to the

lordship of Jesus Christ, which requires accepting

Christs challenge and empowering to fulfill His last

great commission to make disciples (Jesus follow-

ers) among every people group. We believe a

healthy Christian life will keep this great commis-

sion in focus through use of a thorough knowledge

and understanding of Gods Word, an obedient

Spirit-filled walk, a love for what Christ is doing

through His bride, the Church, and an open appre-

ciation for what God has already done in the world.

    Conceptual Framework

In order to conceptualize the components and

interactions within the educational process for

undergraduate studies at CIU, the faculty has

developed the following visual model to help clari-

fy the inter-relationships and tasks associated

with healthy education that is Kingdom oriented.

In this model, one can see that there is a triangle

of tasks for the key participants in biblical highereducation at CIU. The faculty has the responsibili-

ty toinspire, develop, and equip students to

pursue God for a lifetime and to serve as strategic

leaders in His global cause. Students have the

responsibility to embrace, inquire, and refine

their knowledge and critical thinking processes as

well as refine professional and relational skills and

talents for service to God and others. Most

importantly, we expect God to participate in the

learning process. His role is to transform and

illumine the minds of both students and teachersand to empowerall for a life of godliness and

    service.

At the core of our educational experience, we

believe that all students (1) will mature as follow-

ers of Christ, (2) will develop intellectual inquiry

skills for both the study of the Word and the study

of our world, and (3) will demonstrate a level of

ministry competency by which they make a differ-

ence as leaders within their homes, their church-

es, and their communities, as well as become

leaders within their chosen vocations or callings.

One also notes in this model that growing rela-

tionships are as significant to the educational

experience as the triangle of teaching/learning

tasks. Growing relationships should be evidenced

between faculty and students, between faculty

and the Lord, between students and the Lord,

and between the CIU community and the Church

of Jesus Christ, sometimes called the Body of

Christ, to whom we submit ourselves. These rela-

tioships are rooted i the Word, prayer, faith, wor-

ship, ad fellowship. While a studet, life chage is

the result of accomplishig the educatioal core

experiece. Out of this growig experiece,

steeped i healthy relatioships, our studets

mature so that they ca become servat leaders

with a passio for walkig with God ad a strategiceye for the Kigdom busiess i the 21st cetury.

While ot withi this picture, the faculty has

worked hard at idetifyig sigificat iputs ad

expected outcomes associated with this cocep-

tual framework. The faculty attempt to assess the

success of graduates i reachig stated learig

outcomes. As they assess studet success ad

challeges, they egage i a cotiuous process

of adjustig educatioal programs so they meet

the ever-chagig eeds of college studets.

    Pga dg

To fulfill these persoal ad vocatioal goals, we

offer a variety of academic programs, with Bible

as the core of each. To master the Bible, it is ec-

essary to kow its cotet ad uderstad its

meaig. Further, to apply the truth of the

Scripture so that it chages patters of thikig

ad behavior is vitally importat. Skill i observig,

iterpretig, ad applyig Gods Word is eces-

sary. Bible surveys, book studies, topical Bible

studies (i.e., theology), ad Bible-related subjectsare desiged with these purposes i mid. To

develop skill i the use of the Bible, tools for study

ad commuicatio are leared ad used i such

    courses as hermeeutics, biblical laguages,

    homiletics ad others.

However, to make Christ kow i the full sese of

the word, it is ecessary ot oly to study the

Bible ad Bible-related subjects, but to kow the

people to whom we would make Christ kow

ad how to commuicate best with those people.

I studyig people ad ature, we differ from Bible

schools that teach oly the Bible ad Bible-related

subjects. To kow huma ature, we study psy-

chology, athropology, ad sociology. To kow

huma thought, we study huma religio, philoso-

phy, ad literature. To kow huma experiece,

we study history, geography, the arts, ad more.

To kow empirically about creatio ad quatita-

tive reasoig, we study math, physical sciece,

biology, ecology, ad critical thikig. We study

ot oly our message, but we study those with

whom we would share the message so that we

may share it most effectively. Most importatly, we

study to kow the Oe who created ad sustais

all, for to kow ad reverece Him is the begi-

ig of wisdom, the foudatio o which weuderstad the message we deliver.

As a istitutio of higher educatio, there are at

least two relevat reasos for studyig geeral

educatio. First, a importat part of studyig the

various disciplies i geeral educatio is to

become the fully formed, creative, reasoig,

social creatures that God desiged us to be. I so

doig we eter ito richer relatioships with both

God ad our eighbors. The secod vital reaso

to study geeral educatio is the ability to com-

muicate Christ effectively. By becomig well-

formed, ot oly will we have reasoig skills,

    worldview uderstadig, athropological kowl-

edge ad historical perspectives that will eable

us to reach others, we will have richer cultures ad

worldviews ito which we ca draw people.

not oly do we study the Bible ad the books of

ature icludig the scieces ad humaities, but

Through the learig process i academic set-

tigs, miistry skills experieces, ad ormal stu-

eucaal taWe ofte describe our educatioal process at CIU

as a educatioal triad. Three educatioal com-

poets come together to provide balaced edu-

    Doctrinal Standard

Teachig at Columbia Iteratioal Uiversity is

based o the great fudametals of the Christia

faith, all of which ceter i the perso of Jesus

ad Lord. The followig, together with other

Christia priciples of doctrie ad practice,

icludig the affirmatio of the full trustworthiessof Scripture, which i its origial writig was ver-

bally ispired ad without error, shall be the basis

of the faith ad doctrie of Columbia Iteratioal

    Uiversity:

    1. The Bible is the ispired Word of God, the writ-

te record of His superatural revelatio of

Himself to ma, absolute i its authority, com-

plete i its revelatio, fial i its cotet, ad

    2. All me i their atural state are lost, alieated

from God, spiritually dead: All have sied,

ad fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23).

    3. Salvatio is oly by grace, a free gift of God,

through faith i the Lord Jesus, who died for

our sis accordig to the Scriptures (1 Cor.

15:3). Those who thus receive Christ by faith

have their sis forgive (Eph. 1:7) ad their

hearts cleased (Acts 15:9), are bor of the

Spirit, become childre of God (J. 1:12, 13),

ad are made ew creatures i Christ (II Cor.

    5:17).

    4. God is Oe God, Who reveals Himself i three

Persos, Father, So, ad Holy Spirit. Jesus

Christ, as the Scriptures affirm, is the So of

God ad So of ma. He was bor of a virgi

ad is Himself very God. The Scriptures alsodeclare the deity ad persoality of the Holy

    Spirit.

    5. Our Lord Jesus rose from the dead i the same

body that was laid to rest i the tomb (J.

20:25-27). The bodies of all believers who die

will be raised from the dead, ad they will

receive a icorruptible body like uto His glori-

ous body (I Cor. 15:53; Phil. 3:21). All other me

shall be raised uto the resurrectio of judg-

    met (J. 5:28, 29).

    6. Christias, bor of the Spirit, are to live the ew

life i the preset power of the Spirit. If we live

by the Spirit, by the Spirit let us also walk (Gal.

5:16-25; Col. 2:6). The Christias resposibility

ad his ormal attitude of life is to yield himself

to God (Rom. 6:13), trustig God to keep him.

    7. Christia livig icludes Christia service, the

wiig of souls aroud us, ad the preachig

of the Gospel i the uttermost parts of the

earth. I carryig o this work there is eeded

the superatural power of the Holy Spirit whichis grated to every believer as he yields ad

    trusts (Acts 1:8; I Cor. 12:7; Eph. 3:20; Acts

5:32). Ad i all of this service, prayer is to have

    the cetral place (J. 14:12-14; Eph. 6:18, 19).

    8. Jesus Christ will come agai to earth the sec-

od time (Heb. 9:28), persoally (Acts 1:11; I

Thess. 4:16), bodily (Acts 1:11; Col. 2:9), ad

visibly (Matt. 26:64; Rev. 1:7). His comig will

precede the age of uiversal peace ad right-

eousess foretold i the Scriptures (Matt.

    24:29, 30, 42; II Thess. 2:7, 8; Rev. 20:1-6).

The secod year goal is for these studets to

(if appropriate to the studets giftig ad goals)

allow studets greater freedom to choose a

Christia service learig opportuity withi the
