APPENDIX 8

(a) This Appendix describes methods which shall be

employed whenever liquid penetrant examination is

speci- fied in this Division.

(b)  Article 6 of Section V  shall be applied for detail requirements in methods, procedures and qualifications,

unless specified within this Appendix.

(c) Liquid penetrant examination shall be performed  in

accordance with a written procedure, certified by theManufacturer to be in accordance with the requirements

of T-150 of Section V.

8-4 ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS

These acceptance standards shall apply unless other

more restrictive standards are specified for specificmaterials or applications within this Division.

All surfaces to be examined shall be free of:

(a) relevant linear indications;

(b) relevant rounded indications greater than 3⁄16 in.(5mm);

(c) four or more relevant rounded indications in a line

separated by 1⁄16 in. (1.5 mm) or less (edge to edge).

Evaluation of Indications

Indicaciones lineales:

11.3 LIQUID PENETRANT TEST METHODWhen liquid penetrant testing is specified by the

company, a detailed written procedure for liquid

penetrant testing shall be established that meets the

requirements of  ASTM E 165. The company and the

nondestructive testing contractor should agree on theliquid penetrant testing procedure or procedures prior to

the performance of production testing.

The company shall require the contractor to demonstrate

that the proposed procedures will produce acceptableresults and shall require the contractor to use such

procedures for production testing.

9.5 LIQUID PENETRANT TESTING

9.5.1 Classification of Indications9.5.1.1 Indications produced by liquid penetrant testing are not

necessarily imperfections. Machining marks, scratches, and surface

conditions may produce indications that are similar to those produced by

imperfections but that are not relevant to acceptability. The criteria given in

9.5.1.2 and 9.5.1.3 apply when indications are evaluated.

9.5.1.2 Any indication with a maximum dimension of 1/16 in. (2 mm) or less shall be classified as nonrelevant. Any larger indication believed to be

nonrelevant shall be regarded as relevant until re-examined by liquid

penetrant or another nondestructive testing method to determine whether or

not an actual imperfection exists. The surface may be ground or otherwise

conditioned before re-examination. After an indication is determined to be

nonrelevant, other nonrelevant indications of the same type need not be re-examined.

9.5.1.3 Relevant indications are those caused by imperfections.

Linear indications are those in which the length is more than three times the

width. Rounded indications are those in which the length is three times the

width or less.

9.5.2 Acceptance Standards

Relevant indications shall be considered defects should any of

the following conditions exist:

a. Linear indications are evaluated as crater cracks or star

cracks and exceed 5/32 in. (4 mm) in length.

b. Linear indications are evaluated as cracks other than crater

cracks or star cracks.

c. Linear indications are evaluated as IF and exceed 1 in. (25

mm) in total length in a continuous 12 in. (300 mm) length of weld or 8% of the weld length.

Rounded indications shall be evaluated according to the criteria

of 9.3.9.2 and 9.3.9.3, as applicable. For evaluation purposes,

the maximum dimension of a rounded indication shall be

considered its size.Note: When doubt exists about the type of imperfection being

disclosed

by an indication, verification may be obtained by using other

nondestructive testing methods.

6.14.5 PT. For detecting discontinuities that areopen to the surface, PT may be used. The standard

methods set forth in ASTM E 165 shall be used for

PT inspection, and the standards of acceptance

shall be in conformance with Section 6, Part C, of

this code, whichever is applicable.6.10 PT and MT

Welds that are subject to MT and PT, in addition to

visual inspection, shall be evaluated on the basis of

the applicable requirements for visual inspection. The testing shall be performed in conformance with

6.14.4 or 6.14.5, whichever is applicable.
