Ask for Sheldon

PLAYITA • Year XV • No. 57 December 2017 - January 2018 3

We are pleased to welcome Sheldon Winters, the new owner of Beso Loco, to Manuel Antonio and to our Playita family.

Sheldon is from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Since he’s arrived he has embraced this Costa Rica and its wonders. He volunteers in beach cleaning and maintenance and in GLBTI committees and projects. Soon he’s going to immerse himself into learning Spanish.

Beso Loco is THE surf shop for men and women in Manuel Antonio with exclusive Costa Rican brands of swim and surf wear. He believes in producing and working with the people of his adopted homeland: working with companies that produce their own line of beach and swimwear and developing the ‘Beso Loco’ clothing brand with an eye to future locations in Uvita and Tamarindo as well. “Keep it local,” is his motto.

Beso Loco carries Monkey Mafia, DKoko, Jungle Soul, Coral, Uttu, Zilan and Monkey Buziness. His line of men’s board shorts is the only Costa Rican brand sold available in Costa Rica. His staff: Adriana, Itzel and Maryeling are from Quepos/Manuel Antonio. He is working with local artisans to craft unique jewelry items. He is also bringing in a line of local sunglasses with bamboo frames and has beach pillows and quick dry towels from Marche. Shirts range in price from $25 to $35 and his board shorts start at $32.

Beso Loco welcomes Everyone! The store is located on the second floor of the plaza across from Barba Roja and is open seven days a week from 8 until 8. Stop in and say hello. They’ll be happy to serve you. 2777-0669 / 6452-4883

¡A Grito Pelado!

Costa Rica’s green season here has seen several changes in the area. Although tropical storm Nate dropped

a couple of ‘feet’ of rain on the area, we have cleaned up, dried off and are happy to receive a new high season with a renewed spirit of Pura Vida.

Mogambo BarCafe has recently changed ownership. Trevor and Franklin have taken the reins of this local watering hole so well known for its commanding view of the ocean and stunning sunset vistas. Enjoy good conversation and good times in air conditioned comfort or out on the deck where. They offer drink specials, snacks, food, local and imported beers and a full range of cocktails. Gay Tours’ Sunset Sessions is back again every Sunday from 4 to 8 pm. Everyone is welcome at Mogambo, Manuel Antonio’s bar where “everybody knows your name.”

Playita is pleased to welcome Manuel Antonio Jet Ski Tours to its roster of Gaytours. They offer a local wave-runner tour exploring Manuel Antonio National parks spectacular coastline. Mitch Eicoff, the company’s operator is originally from Miami, FL, and has lived in the area for over 10 years. Having lived by the ocean his entire life, he made the choice to move to Manuel Antonio to enjoy nature and a more peaceful lifestyle. The Jet Ski tour explores the best of Costa Rica, beautiful shoreline, mountains

and takes in the large variety of birds and animals on land and sea. Join us on Tuesday for an exclusive gay tour. Bring along swim gear, sun screen and plenty of adrenalin!

Salón Montenegro is run by Luis Montenegro who brings to the center of Quepos his expertise in presenting the latest styles of cuts and color for men and women. His shop is located across from Pollolandia, a block north of the Mercado Central and the Bus Depot. Follow the hallway to the back and then right to his salon where he works his magic. Appointments aren’t always necessary. Stop in and say “Hello” to Luis! You’ll be glad you did.

We welcome Sushi Los Amigos to our Playita family of advertisers. Sushi chef Jader Moraga has been tempting our palate in Manuel Antonio for several years. He offers a wide variety of rolls and dishes using the freshest ingredients available. The space might be small but the quality is exceptional. He also offers daily specials, home delivery and is open from 12 noon to 10 PM.

Express Burrito is our go to spot for great burritos and so much more. Look for a new menu and new food items in addition to their traditional Costa Rican food offerings in their fully licensed restaurant and bar. Still open until midnight. Still offering delivery. Still great prices!

EL ARADO RESTAURANT

Manuel Antonio, CR

PLAYITA • Year XV • No. 57 December 2017 - January 2018 13

El Arado Restaurant is located on the old road to Quepos, just 100 meters west of Mono Azul Hotel. Owner and

chef Jesús Villalobos hails from San Vito in the southern part of Costa Rica and has been a fixture at local food establishments for many years. Three months ago, with the help of his wife Sara and his three sons, he took over El Arado Restaurant, making many changes in the locale as well as the menu. He and staff offer you breakfast, lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday. The rustic setting belies the high quality of food experience. Choose from a wide variety of food styles, fusing Asian, Continental, Tex-Mex and Costa Rican tastes onto your plate. Beautifully presented and delectable tastes at very reasonable prices. Appetizers from $7 to $12 and entrées start at $9 to $20. Open till midnight. Happy hour cocktails from 4 to 7 PM.

We are also pleased to announce that Gay Tours will be holding its annual Tamaleada Party at the El Arado on December 28 where we celebrate the Costa Rican tradition of sharing tamales around the Christmas Season. Come and enjoy!

If you have been around for a little bit, you will no doubt notice some major changes happening at Club Karma Lounge,

located on the lower level of the Cockatoo Building. Mark Schurtz is the new owner of the club and we would like to welcome him here to Manuel Antonio! Mark is originally from Grand Rapids but left there a long time ago (good idea Mark…winter’s too cold in Michigan!) He has spent most of the last 20 years in Southern Florida working in hotel and resort marketing and management.

For the first six week Mark used up lots of frequent flyer miles going back and forth to Florida but he’s now here full time. In October a new wind swept through Karma and, after a lot of busy days, the newest rendition of the bar has emerged. It’s been completely repainted and looks as fresh and clean as the new owner!

Karma offers great dance music and videos on its huge screen provided by both House DJ’s and Guest DJ’s. Every day there are early evening drink specials. As of our publication, this is still the only (legal) nightclub/disco in Manuel Antonio, open and serving right up until 2:30 AM. Karma also has a sheltered smoking area and has barrier-free access as well. Look on their Facebook page for announcements of Drag Shows and other special events.

Mark is also looking forward to making a few more changes to Karma. He’s planning to open earlier and have more of a lounge type atmosphere in the evening before the Nightclub/Disco vibe for later on. Theme nights, more drink specials are in the works as well. Introduce yourself to Mark. He’s loving his new home, business and meeting new people. We are proud to have him in our community! Welcome Mark!

1. Monkeys are highly susceptible to diseases from human hands. They can die from bacteria transferred from your hands to the monkeys, bacteria that have no ill effect on you. 2. Migration to human-populated areas where they are fed increases their risk of dog attacks and road accidents. 3. Irregular feeding leads to an aggressive behavior towards humans and other species. 4. Contrary to popular belief, bananas are not the “preferred” food of monkeys in the wild. Bananas, especially those containing pesticides, can be upsetting to the monkeys’ delicate digestive system and cause serious dental problems that can lead to eventual death. 5. Humans feeding monkeys in the wild creates a dangerous dependency which diminishes the monkeys’ survival abilities. 6. Humans feeding monkeys interferes with the monkeys’ natural habits and upsets the natural balance of their lifestyle centered on eating wild fruits, seeds, small animals, and insects. 7. Contact with humans facilitates poaching and the trade in illegal wildlife. 8. Pregnant females in the wild who are fed by humans during their pregnancy will not give birth to healthy infants. The babies will be malnourished, or never develop to term, and die before birth. 9. Monkeys need to travel an average of 17 kilometers each day to be in good physical condition. If they know that food is available in a particular location, they will not leave that area. 10. Not only do we pass on diseases to animals when we feed them by hand, but they can pass diseases to us as well. 11. The Law of the Wildlife states that it is prohibited to feed wild animals. The only exception is in the case of a dire emergency where a species would perish without food. The monkeys do not realize any of this. Now YOU do! Don’t contribute to the extinction of one of nature’s most amazing creatures for your own pleasure or for financial gain. Please help save the monkeys by reporting anyone feeding the monkeys to: 2777-25-92

Puede que usted encuentre que alimentar a los monos (y otros animales silvestres) sea una experiencia emocionante, pero usted no le está haciendo ningun favor a los monos, de hecho, usted los está dañando. He aquí por qué:1.
