    Quick Start

To install and begin u sing your DECserver 90L is simple. I t does not

require any pr ogramming or other a ssistance from system mana gement. After unpacking the u nit:

    1. Plug the power supply in a working AC outlet and plug the powerconnector from the power supply in to your DECserver 90L.

The green power LED tu rns on to indicate DC power is getting to theunit. The green self-test turns on to indicate that the unit successfullycompleted its internal self-test. The self-test takes approximately fiveseconds to complete.

    2. Connect the unit to a properly terminated ThinWire Eth ernet.

The green network LED turns on to indicate a good connection.

    Verify Ports.

Verify the operation of each port by connecting a terminal to the port.Refer to Table 11 for supported term inal chara cteristics. Pr ess Returntwice (autobaud) to set the operating speed of the port. While watchingthe Activity LED type a character on the terminal. The LED should turnon and off, indicating activity on the port. Perform this procedure for eachport.

    Start Terminal Session.

    1. Connect terminals to ports as needed.

    2. To star t a terminal session u sing a terminal connected to one of theports:

    a . Wi t h t h e t er m i n a l t u r n e d on , p r es s Return twice. This sets thebaud rate of the port to that of the terminal.

    b. At the prompt ->, enter a n ode and pr ess Return .

The DECserver 90L responds by displaying a string of dots "......"while conn ecting t o the selected node. Once the connection isestablished, your terminal will display the system dependent loginmessage or prompt.

    1. Turn your t erminal on or start t he terminal emulation software onyour PC.

    2 . P r es s t h e Return key twice, you will see the DECserver 90L prompt:

    4Managing the DECserver 90L

The DECserver 90L requires very li t t le in the way of management. The

DECserver 90L does not use or require the configuration of group codes. It requires tha t service a d t imers be set to 60 seconds (the default) orless. Reducing the interval for service ad time improves the response ofthe DECserver 90L when making n ew connections. The DECserver 90Lcan work with systems whose service ad t imer interval is greater tha n 60seconds if:

    A LATmaster response is received.

The systems service ad happens to be received within 60 seconds.

The time required for the DECserver 90L to establish a connection can beredu ced to t wo seconds or less for an y service by ins ta lling LATma ster(V5.2) on any node in your network (see your system manager).

The DECserver 90L can be managed locally or from a remote device onthe network. Local ma nagement is done u sing a t erminal connected toone of the ports on the DECserver 90L. Remote management is doneusing ma intena nce operat ions protocol (MOP) console carrier.

    Local Management

    Local ma nagement of the DE Cserver 90L is performed with a terminalconnected to one of i ts eight ports and using the S e t , S h o w , a n d R e s e tcommands of the DECserver 90L.

    Remote Management

The DECserver 90L can be man aged from a remote node on th e networkusing MOP console car rier. Once the MOP console car rier session isestablished, th e S e t a n d S h o w commands are used to examine and set

the various port and server parameters. The R e s e t command is used toreset ports and the server to th e power-up sta te.

A VMS-based system can establish a console carrier session with aDECserver 90L as shown in th e following example. The Et hernet addressof the DECserver 90L in this example is 08-00-2B-08-32-2B and SVA-0identifies the system s Et hern et int erface.

    -> (DECserver 90L PROMPT)

SecuritySecurity for the DECserver 90L is provided by a password protectedmanagement mode. This mode of operation is called authorized mode a n dcan be set and cleared as required. When authorized mode is set, thefollowing cond itions exist:

Users can only set the parameters of their port an d show the serversparameters.

Manager mode must be enabled (password required) to set serverparameters and port parameters other than the one you are connectedto and to change the password.

When th e DECserver 90L is first installed, auth orized m ode is not set andany port can be used to set any other ports par ameters and the server sparam eters. To set au thorized mode requires physical a ccess to th e un it .When setting authorized mode a password is entered and verified. Theunits power mu st be cycled, tur ned off and then on, within one m inute of entering th e pa ssword for aut horized mode to be set. The cycling of thepower verifies tha t you have a ccess to the unit and causes t he pa sswordto be saved in th e u nits non-volat ile RAM (NVRAM).

    Command Line

    The DECserver 90L user interface provides a command line interpretera s a n a l t er n a t e m e a n s t o s et a n d s h o w p or t a n d s e r v er p a r a m e t e r s. Th ecomman d line interpreter helps with t he control of the DECserver 90Lby network management software and by users who want to bypass themenu interface.

For command line entries, the commands and parameters are not enteredthrough a menu on t he term inal screen. The user s input is echoed an dthe complete command is processed after a Return i s e n t er e d . Not e t h a tany error in parsing a command will cause the entire command to beignored.

A space is required between the command (set or show) and itsparam eters. The comman d line interpreter u ses comas (,) as a delimiterto separate the different fields in a comman d line. To make the comman dline interpreter easier to use the current value (default) for a field will beused when:

    1. There is no entry for a field.

    Using a Printer

The installation requirements for printers a re dependent on the systemenvironment in which it is installed. However, there are three basic stepsthat need to be performed when setting a DECserver 90L port for use bya pr inter.

    1. Choose the port to be used.

    Se t t h e s er v er n a m e i f i t h a s n ot a l r e a d y b ee n d on e .

Set the port for use by a printer. The following port para metersshould be set:

printer characteristics (usually disabled)2. Set up th e system so it can access the printer port. Refer to your

system documentation for information on this procedure.

For example on a VAX/VMS system you would use LATCP to mapLTA1234: to the server na me an d port na me on the DECserver 90L.A typical VMS setup is as follows:
