BRAHMS PIANO QUARTET BRAHMS Quartets amb piano núm. 2, op. 26 en La menor i núm. 3, op. 60 en Do menor

Donem el tret de sortida a la temporada de cambra amb una festa de producció autòctona: una trobada amb alguns dels músics més sòlids i experimentats de casa nostra, que ens interpretaran dues de les millors obres de cambra de Johannes Brahms. La maduresa artística dels nostres intèrprets els permet oferir aquests dos monuments que el compositor d’Hamburg va compondre en l’equador de la seva vida. El primer va ser compost just abans de la seva anada a Viena; el segon és una peça que ens permet entrar en l’etapa central de l’obra d’un dels compositors més importants del segle xix.

The chamber music season will kick off with a locally pro-duced festival: A coming together of some of the most es-tablished and experienced musicians of Catalonia to perform two of the greatest pieces of chamber music composed by Johannes Brahms. Artistic maturity allows the artists to offer these two monumental works which the composer from Hamburg wrote halfway through his life. The first piece was composed just before he went to Vienna and the second is a piece that allows us to explore the central period of the work of one of the greatest composers of the 19th century.

QUARTET CASALS AMB BELCEA: SEXTETS DE BRAHMS MOZART Quartet núm. 17 en Si bemoll major, K. 458, “La caça” KURTÁG Moments Musicaux BRAHMS Sextet de cordes núm. 2 en Sol major, op.36

Els dos grans sextets de Brahms marquen dues de les cites ineludibles de la temporada. Arriben a L’Auditori de la mà dels quartets Casals i Belcea en dos concerts d’antologia. El núm. 2, que podrem escoltar en aquest concert, va ser creat en l’entorn rural de Baden-Baden cap al 1864-1865, malgrat que no va ser estrenat fins al 1866 a Boston. A més, el Quartet Casals ens ofereix un dels quartets que Mozart va dedicar a Haydn i l’op. 44 de Kurtág.

The two great sextets by Brahms are two of the unmissable events of the season. These will be performed in the Auditori by the Quartet Casals and the Belcea Quartet in two extra-ordinary concerts. No. 2, which we will hear in this concert, was composed in the rural setting of Baden-Baden in 1864-65, although it was not performed until 1866, in Boston. In addition, the Quartet Casals will perform one of the quartets that Mozart dedicated to Haydn, and Op. 44 by Kurtág.

GOYESCAS, ALBERT ATENELLE GRANADOS Goyescas

Considerada l’obra mestra de Granados, Goyescas és una suite per a piano que el mateix compositor va estrenar el 1911 al Palau de la Música Catalana. Posteriorment, i partint d’aquesta versió, Granados va crear l’òpera del mateix nom que, ara fa 100 anys, es va estrenar al Metropolitan Opera House de Nova York. En el centenari de la seva mort, volem recordar un dels músics més grans que hem tingut a Cata-lunya, de la mà d’un dels nostres referents del piano: Albert Atenelle, que completarà el programa fent una comparativa entre l’Steinway gran cua modern, amb què interpretarà Goyescas, i l’Érard històric del Museu de la Música.

Considered to be Granados’ masterpiece, Goyescas is a suite for piano that the composer himself played for the first time in public in 1911 in the Palau de la Música Catalana. Subsequently, and based on the version for piano, Granados composed the opera of the same name, which 100 years ago saw its debut performance at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. On the centenary of his death, we would like to remember one of Catalonia’s greatest musicians with a performance by one of our country’s top pianists. Atenelle will complete the programme with a comparison between the modern Steinway grand piano, on which he will play Goyescas, and the antique Erard from the Museu de la Música.

A part de la circumstància d’haver nascut el mateix any, són pocs els paral·lelismes que es poden establir entre Johann Sebastian Bach i Domenico Scarlatti. Allò que els uneix en el relat musical és el coneixement de la composició per a tecla, de la que ambdós foren uns grans mestres. Jean Rondeau, la nova revelació del clavecí, debuta a Barcelona després d’haver estat reconegut amb el prestigiós primer premi de Bruges i ens proposa un concert en què podrem apreciar els valors dels dos grans compositors del Barroc. Durant el concert, també tindrem l’oportunitat d’escoltar alguna de les obres amb el clavicèmbal Zell del Museu de la Música de Barcelona.

Apart from their having been born in the same year, there are few parallels between Johann Sebastian Bach and Do-menico Scarlatti. One thing that they do have in common in the musical domain is their mastery of composition for the keyboard, of which they were both great virtuosi. Jean Rondeau, the latest revelation among harpsichord players, gives his first concert in Barcelona after having won the prestigious first prize in Bruges, and offers us a concert in which we can compare the two great composers of the Baroque. During the concert, we will also have the oppor-tunity to hear some of the works with the Zell harpsichord from the Barcelona Museum of Music.

Torna Lockenhaus on tour. Després de l’èxit aconseguit la temporada anterior, els grans intèrprets del Festival de Música de Cambra de Lockenhaus (Àustria)–amb Nicolas Altstaedt al capdavant i la presència, per primera vegada a Barcelona, d’un dels violinistes més virtuosos i amb més personalitat del moment, Pekka Kuusisto– ens visiten una altra vegada per oferir una vetllada centrada en Franz Schubert. Com al mateix compositor li hauria agradat. Un concert en què els amics, grans artistes de projecció mundial, ens ofereixen el quintet “La truita” al costat d’altres obres de l’etapa d’or de la música a Viena.

La violinista Alina Ibragimova torna a Barcelona després del seu debut, ara fa dos anys, en què va oferir la impres-sionant interpretació de les Sonates i Partites per a violí sol de Bach. En aquesta ocasió, completarà la colossal obra del mestre de Leipzig amb les terceres Sonates i Partites, en diàleg amb algunes de les virtuoses sonates d’Eugène Ysaÿe, que Ibragimova acaba d’enregistrar. «Un mestre de violí ha de ser un violinista, un pensador, un poeta, un ésser humà; ha d’haver conegut l’esperança, l’amor, la passió i la desesperació; ha d’haver recorregut tota la gamma d’emocions per tal de poder-les expressar quan toqui.» E. Ysaÿe.

The violinist Alina Ibragimova returns to Barcelona after her debut two years ago, when she gave an astounding perfor-mance of Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin. This time she will complete the colossal œuvre of the Master of Leipzig with the third Sonatas and Partitas, contrasted with some of Eugène Ysaÿe’s virtuoso sonatas, which Ibragimova has just recorded. “The violin virtuoso has to be a violinist, a thinker, a poet and a human being. They have to have known hope, love, passion and despair. They have to gone through the whole range of emotions to be able to express these when they play.” E. Ysaÿe.

«Un pianista per a la resta de les nostres vides», així el va qualificar Norman Lebrecht. En plena eclosió de la seva carrera com a estrella del piano, Daniil Trifonov ve a Bar-celona per oferir un concert únic i molt especial. El geni de Schumann es contraposa a l’homenatge que Xostakóvitx va fer a Bach amb aquesta obra. El programa també conté la creació que Stravinsky va fer de tres moviments de Petruixka per a piano, dedicada al seu amic Arthur Rubinstein.

“A pianist for the rest of our lives” (Norman Lebrecht). At the height of his emergence as a star of the piano, Daniil Trifonov is coming to Barcelona to offer a unique and very special concert. The genius of Schumann is juxtaposed with the homage that Shostakovich made to Bach with this work. The programme also includes Stravinsky’s three movements from Petrushka for piano, dedicated to his friend Arthur Rubinstein.

Tenir el Jerusalem Quartet a Barcelona és un privilegi que no es pot deixar escapar; sobretot, quan el programa esdevé una mostra absoluta del gran repertori per a quartet. Així, entre d’altres, podrem gaudir del quartet L’Alosa, un dels més coneguts de Haydn, al costat del Quartet núm. 1 dels que el comte rus Razumovski va encarregar a Beethoven, i també del Quartet núm. 1 de Prokófiev que, amb la seva energia i exaltació lírica, és una veritable prova de foc per a qualsevol agrupació de cambra. Una veritable mostra de la capacitat interpretativa dels Jerusalem al nostre abast.

Having the Jerusalem Quartet in Barcelona is a privilege that cannot be missed. The programme is a comprehensive sample of the quartet’s great repertoire. The ‘Lark’ Quartet, one of Haydn’s most well-known works, along with Beethoven’s Quartet No.1 commissioned by the Russian count Razumovsky. Prokofiev’s Quartet No. 1, with its energy and lyrical exaltation, is a real trial by fire for any chamber ensemble. A true demonstration of the interpretive skills of the Jerusalem Quartet for the enjoyment of the audience.

Un recorregut des de la música per a tecla de Bach al gran Schumann i al Beethoven de les sonates de maduresa; de l’originalitat d’Skriabin a l’extrema dificultat del Gaspard de la nuit de Ravel, que va ser estrenat a París pel lleidatà Ricard Viñes el 1909. Un veritable repte per a un jove talent.

The evolution of great piano music at the hands of Danylo Saienko, winner of the 2015 Maria Canals prize. A journey through keyboard music from Bach, to the great Schumann and the mature sonatas of Beethoven; from the originality of Scriabin to the extreme difficulty of Ravel’s Gaspard de la nuit, which was first performed in Paris by Ricard Viñes (Lleida) in 1909. La presència de Kim Kashkashian a Barcelona és un fet sempre destacable, i més quan, tractant-se d’una de les violistes més prestigioses del panorama musical actual, presenta, entre d’altres, les dues sonates que Brahms va escriure per a viola a partir de les sonates per a clarinet. Kashkashian també ha treballat amb altres tipus de música, com la contemporània, el jazz i les músiques d’Armènia, d’on prové la seva família. Juntament amb Tabea Zimmermann, a qui vam poder veure fa dues temporades, es tracta, sens dubte, d’una de les intèrprets de viola més importants de tots els temps.

The presence of Kim Kashkashian in Barcelona is always a notable event, and particularly as she is one of the most prestigious violists in music today. Among other works, she will present the two sonatas that Brahms wrote for the viola, based on the clarinet z. Kashkashian has also worked in other musical styles, such as contemporary, jazz and the musiczof Armenia, which is where her family is from. Together with Tabea Zimmermann, who performed here two seasons ago, she is without doubt one of the greatest violists of all time.

El Quartet Diotima, referent mundial en la interpretació de música dels segles xx i xxi, presenta un concert en què podrem escoltar Haas, que segons Sir Simon Rattle, és un dels pocs autors de reconegudes obres mestres del segle xxi.In Vain, de G. F. Haas. En aquest concert, Diotima presenta l’estrena a Barcelona del Quartet de corda núm. 7 de Haas, un indescriptible viatge de 25 minuts per a quartet amb electrònica especialitzada. El programa es completa amb dos dels compositors més representatius del panorama europeu: l’espanyol Alberto Posadas, Premi Nacional de Música 2011, i el català Hèctor Parra, compositor resident de L’Auditori. Un programa que ens mostra els nous camins del quartet de corda al segle xxi.

The Diotima Quartet, an international reference point in the performance of 20th and 21st century music, presents a concert with music from Haas, who according to Sir Simon Rattle, is one of the few composers of works recognized as great masterpieces of the 21st century. In this concert, Quatuor Diotima will perform, for the first time in Barcelona, the String Quartet No. 7 by Haas, which is an indescribable 25-minute journey for quartet with specialised electronics. The programme is completed by works from two of Europe’s most representative composers: Alberto Posadas of Spain, 2011 National Music Prize winner, and Hector Parra of Catalonia, resident composer at the Auditori. A programme that shows us the new directions of the string quartet in the 21st century.

La Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya dóna el tret de sortida a l’Emergents Barcelona Music Festival, el nou projecte de L’Auditori que reunirà a Barcelona el millor talent musical nacional i internacional. La JONC, com a projecte de màxima expressió del geni del país, estrena l’escenari del Festival amb la Novena simfonia de Xostakóvitx i completa un programa soviètic amb el concert per a violí de Khatxaturian. L’encarregat de presentar-lo serà el multi instrumentista Sergey Malov, alumne avantatjat de la Universitat Mozarteum de Salzburg i de la Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler de Berlín, guanyador amb el violí de premis tan prestigiosos com el de l’International Mozart Competition de Salzburg, la Jasha Heifetz Competition o, amb la viola, el de la Tokyo Competition.

The Jove Orquestra Nacional de Catalunya starts off the Emergents Barcelona Music Festival; the new project run by the Auditori that will bring the best national and inter-national musical talent to Barcelona. The JONC project, representing the maximum expression of the country’s talent, will appear for the first time on the festival’s stage with Shostakovitch’s Ninth Symphony and will complete the Soviet Russian-themed programme with Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto. This will be presented by the multi-instru-mentalist Sergey Malov, who has a degree from both the University of Mozarteum in Salzburg and the Hanns Eisler Hochschule in Berlin. Sergey Malov went on to win such prestigious prizes as the International Mozart Competition Salzburg and the International Jascha Heifetz Competition with the violin, and the Tokyo Competition with the viola.

JONC: SERGEY MALOV Emergents Barcelona Music Festival

L’Emergents Barcelona Music Festival presenta, en aquesta ocasió, un triple concert que arrenca amb la col·laboració amb Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya i la presència del pianista català Luis Grané i del quintet de vent Azahar Ensemble. Guanyadors del Concurs internacional de piano Alicia de Larrocha i de l’ARD International Music Compe-tition respectivament, presenten en ambdós programes obres de Joan Magrané, Premi de Composició Reina Sofia 2015. Completarem la festa amb el debut a Barcelona de la violinista Tamsin Waley-Cohen, nominada com a Rising Star per l’European Concert Hall Organization i presentada pel Town Hall, Symphony Hall de Birmingham.

On this occasion the Emergents Barcelona Music Festival presents a triple concert that starts with a collaboration between Joventuts Musicals de Catalunya, featuring the Catalan pianist, Luis Grané, and the Azahar Ensemble woodwind quintet. Winners of the Alicia de Larrocha Inter-national Piano Competition and the ARD International Music Competition respectively, they will present works by 2015 “Reina Sofía” Composition Prize winner Joan Magrané in both programmes. L’Emergents Barcelona Music Festival dedica aquest triple concert al quartet de corda, sota el comissariat de Jonat-han Brown del Quartet Casals. Emergents Barcelona Music Festival will dedicate this day to the string quartet, coordinated by Jonathan Brown of the Quartet Casals. Una vetllada més de l’Emergents Barcelona Music Festival que arrenca amb el debut a Barcelona de la jove pianista Mariam Batsashvili, primer premi el 2014 de l’International Franz Liszt Piano Competition. Arriba nominada com a ECHO RisingStar i presentada pel Palau de les Arts de Budapest. Per arrodonir la festa, s’hi uneix la Banda Municipal de Barcelona, que convida el violoncel·lista català Oscar Alabau, debutant a L’Auditori després d’haver-ho fet al Wigmore Hall de Londres, amb un espectacular programa que presenta el quasi jazzístic concert del mític Friedrich Gulda. A més, i acompanyat de la Banda, també podrem escoltar el trombonista Peter Moore, que als 18 anys va entrar a formar part de la London Symphony com a assistent de solista, de manera que ha esdevingut el membre més jove de la història de l’orquestra. Gràcies a les seves qualitats excepcionals,va ser reconegut amb el primer premi de la BBC Young Music Competition el 2008.

Another evening of music in the Emergents Barcelona Music Festival that starts with the début in Barcelona of the young pianist Mariam Batsashvili, winner of the first prize in the 2014 Franz Liszt Piano Competition. Mariam was also nominated as an ECHO Rising Star by the Palace of Arts, Budapest. To round off the event, there will be a performance by the Barcelona Municipal Band featuring the Catalan cellist Oscar Alabau, who will be making his début at the Auditori after his début at London’s Wigmore Hall, with a spectacular programme that presents the quasi jazz concerto by mythic composer Friedrich Gulda. Furthermore, accompanied by the Band, we will also be able to enjoy the trombonist Peter Moore, who at 18 years of age now forms part of the London Symphony Orchestra as co-principal trombone, making him the youngest member of the orchestra in history. His exceptional talent also won him first prize in the 2008 BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition.

En el concert de dissabte de l’Emergents Barcelona Music Festival, l’OBC presenta per primera vegada a Barcelona el violoncel·lista Aurelien Pascal, que als 11 anys ja va ser guanyador de la Rostropóvitx Junior Competition i que re-centment, el 2015, ho ha estat de la prestigiosa Emanuel Feuermann Competition. En la funció de diumenge, podrem escoltar la jove violinista Rosanne Philippens, guanyadora de la Dutch National Violin Competition (Amsterdam Con-certgebouw 2009), entre altres premis que l’han dut a de-butar com a solista amb directors de la talla de Yannick Nézet-Séguin. A més, tant el dissabte com el diumenge po-drem escoltar tres joves artistes nacionals amb el “Triple Concert” de Beethoven. El violinista del trio és Miguel Co-lom, primer premi del Concurso Permanente de Juventudes Musicales de España; el violoncel·lista, Fernando Arias, gua-nyador del Primer Palau, i el pianista Juan Pérez Floristán, primer premi, medalla d’or i premi del públic del Concurso Internacional de Piano de Santander Paloma O’Shea 2015.

At the Saturday concert of the Emergents Barcelona Mu-sic Festival, the OBC will present for the first time in Bar-celona, the cellist Aurelien Pascal, who at only 11 years of age won the Rostropovich Junior Competition. In 2015 he won first prize in the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann Cello Competition. On Sunday, we can hear the young vio-linist Rosanne Philippens, winner of the Dutch National Vi-olin Competition (Amsterdam Concertgebouw 2009)among other prizes, which have led her to début as soloist under directors of such standing as Yannick Nézet-Séguin. En una societat dominada pel racionalisme cartesià, com és el cas de l’Anglaterra del segle xvii, els bojos eren figures fascinants i espontànies que provocaven rebuig i llàstima alhora. Personatges als quals es va permetre mostrar la seva bogeria enfront de tabús i normes socials. Per emfa-titzar aquesta circumstància, alguns compositors van optar per fer música centrada en aquests personatges singulars. Aquest concert –en què presentem Xavier Sabata en recital a L’Auditori– és una oportunitat per escoltar-los i conèixer la visió colorista que tenien de la seva societat.

In a society dominated by Cartesian rationalism, as was the case of seventeenth-century England, the mad were figures of fascination and spontaneity, but also of revulsion and pity. Mad characters enabled one to confront social norms and taboos. To emphasise this situation, some com-posers opted to write music for such unique characters. This recital – Xavier Sabata’s debut at L’Auditori – is an opportunity to hear some of these characters and get to know the colourful vision they had of their society.

Si, a més, es tracta d’afrontar les partitures que planteja aquest programa, l’emoció està garantida. Quants s’atreveixen a oferir la Sonata de Ravel o el Duo de Kodály en concert? Doncs d’això es tracta. Poques vegades la conjunció d’artistes d’aquesta talla fa possible un concert com aquest. Intocables.

Virtuosity, expressiveness, impeccable technique, exquisite sound...The dialogue between two virtuosos at this level is an event that is both incredible and sensual. When it also involves tackling the scores chosen for this programme, excitement is guaranteed. How many musicians would dare to offer Ravel’s Sonata or the Kodaly Duo in concert? It is not often that a combination of artists of such stature make a concert like this possible. Untouchables.

Dues de les cites ineludibles de la temporada vénen de-terminades per la interpretació dels dos grans sextets de Brahms, gràcies a la col·laboració entre el Quartet Belcea i el Casals. En aquest segon concert, completem la proposta amb la interpretació del núm. 1, una música de gran trans-parència i lirisme, que connecta directament amb les seves simfonies. Compost a Detmold, va ser estrenat a Hamburg el 1860. El programa s’inicia amb el gran Quartet núm. 15 de Schubert, el darrer que va compondre.

Two of the unmissable dates of the season are the inter-pretation of the two great sextets by Brahms, fruit of the collaboration between the Belcea Quartet and Quartet Casals. With this second concert we conclude the pro-gramme with a performance of String Sextet No.1, a work of great transparency and lyricism, which directly connects to Brahms’ symphonies. Composed in Detmold, it was first performed in Hamburg in 1860. The programme commences with Schubert’s great Quartet No. 15, which was the com-poser’s last work.

El Cor Lieder Càmera presenta una visió global de la música coral de Mendelssohn, tant religiosa com profana, en un any en què el compositor d’Hamburg és molt present a L’Auditori. Per una banda, l’OBC intepretarà la gran obra simfònica coral Lobgesang, i per l’altra la Freiburger Barockorchester, sota la direcció de Pablo Heras-Casado i amb la violinista Isabelle Faust, oferirà el mític concert per a violí i orquestra. El concepte contemporani de música coral té el seu origen al segle xix i els grans compositors s’hi van apuntar amb entusiasme. El lligam entre el món literari i l’expressió mu-sical va convertir-se en un vehicle ideal per a la sensibilitat global del Romanticisme. Un concert de gran compromís artístic amb un dels cors referents del país.

On one side, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra will play the great Symphony Cantata Lobgesang, and on the other, the Freiburger Barockorchester with the conductor Pablo Heras-Casado and the violinist Isabelle Faust will offer the great violin concerto. The contemporary concept of choral music has its origin in the 19th century and the great composers took it up with enthusiasm. The connection between the literary world and musical expres-sion became an ideal vehicle for the global sensibility of Romanticism. A concert of great artistic commitment with one of the country’s leading choirs.

SETZE CORDES Concert familiar

Sumem... dos violins, una viola i un violoncel. En total, les Setze Cordes del Quartet Quixote, afinades per convidar-nos a descobrir un món ple de músiques boniques, algunes tant conegudes de tota la vida com Margarideta o Si la barqueta es tomba. Un espai màgic on, destapant caixes de totes les mides i colors, anirem descobrint els secrets dels músics d’un quartet de corda.

Two violins, one viola and one cello. These are the Sixteen Strings (Setze Cordes) of the Quixote Quartet, tuned and ready to take you on a musical journey, including beautiful well-known Catalan songs such as Margarideta (Daisy) and Si la barqueta es tomba (If the little boat capsizes). A magical place where, as boxes of all shapes and colours are opened, you will discover the string quartet musicians’ secrets. This is a chamber music concert for the very youngest members of the family to enjoy.
