Facebook Creator is Time Person of the Year
Time magazine has named Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, as and their Person of the Year 2010. Zuckerberg, at the age of 26, is the second-youngest winner of the accolade. He won the award for connecting 12 percent of the planet on his social networking site. This is an impressive statistic considering the site has yet to make any impression in China.
Mr Zuckerberg said on Wednesday, naturally on his Facebook page: "Being named as Time Person of the Year is a real honor and recognition of how our little team is building something that hundreds of millions of people want to use to make the world more open and connected. I'm happy to be a part of that." The young entrepreneur owns a quarter of the shares of Facebook and is a multi-billionaire.
It was uncertain for a while who would win Time’s annual honor. Readers voting in the online poll chose the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange as the winner. However, Time panelists chose Mark Zuckerberg. Time’s editor Richard Stengel explained they chose Zuckerberg because he was a more positive figure than Assange and because he changed “how we all live our lives in ways that are innovative and even optimistic”. He wrote on Time’s website: "There is an erosion of trust in authority, a decentralizing of power and at the same time, perhaps, a greater faith in one another…" he said. Mr Stengel continued: “Zuckerberg sees the world as filled with potential friends.” Perhaps only the Facebook creator himself knows how much more he can do.
Vocabulary: Accolade: something granted as a special honor or in recognition of merit.
Impressive: If an object or achievement is impressive, you admire or respect it, usually because it is special,
important or very large.
Impression: an idea or opinion of what something is like.
Entrepreneur: someone who starts their own business, especially when this involves seeing a new
opportunity.
Poll: a study in which people are asked for their opinions about a subject or person.
Erosion: the weakening or damage done to something by a series of gradual losses of parts of it.

ELECTION DEBATE
TEACHER: Welcome to our debate! The candidates for class president this year are André and Jeri. Please introduce yourself and tell us why you’d be a good president. ANDRÉ: Hi, I’m André. I think I’d be a great class president because I’m reliable and I’m very creative. JERI: Hi everyone, I’m Jeri and I’m really good at organizing. I’m also efficient and I’m hardworking. TEACHER: How good are you at working with people, André? ANDRÉ: I’m really good at working with people. And I’d make a good president because I am always level-headed. Most people think I’m easy to talk to. TEACHER: And Jeri? JERI: I’m OK at working with people. Sometimes I’m a little impatient but I’m never critical. TEACHER: OK! Next question. André, can you solve problems easily? ANDRÉ: Well, It takes a lot of work to solve problems for a whole class, but I think I’m good at it, I really like helping people, and like I said I’m very creative. Sometimes a problem just needs a creative solution. TEACHER: OK, Jeri what about you? JERI: I like helping people, too, I’m so-so at solving problems, but if the solution doesn’t work, I always ask someone for help. I can’t stand making mistakes. ANDRÉ: Oh, I don’t mind. If you don’t make mistakes, you won’t learn anything! TEACHER: That’s a good point, Andrë, well we’re out of time. Thanks to our candidates for Participating, and don’t forget to vote on Thursday! Geniuses amaze us, impress us, and make us all a little jealous. How do they differ from the
average person? Scientists are working hard to figure out that answer. Tune into the National
Geographic Channel to find out about the discoveries they're making in the series My Brilliant Brain.
When Marc Yu was only two years old, he began to play the piano. After a year, he started learning
pieces by Beethoven. Now he's a world-renowned concert pianist at age eight. He learns newer and
more difficult pieces with ease and can identify any note he hears. He seems to be specially
designed for music. In Born Genius, National Geographic looks at the science behind child prodigies
to explain why some children seem to be born without limits.
Genius didn't come naturally to Tommy McHugh. His came only after he nearly died from bleeding
in his brain. After recovering, McHugh's head was filled with new thoughts and pictures. So, he
began to express them in the form of poetry and art. Now, he's a seemingly unstoppable creative
machine. Sufferers of autism and brain injury have shown that great mental ability can sometimes
come from damage or disease. Accidental Genius explores this puzzling relationship. Can normal
people be trained to be geniuses? Susan Polger has shown no signs of extraordinary intelligence.
Yet, during her childhood, she studied thousands of chess patterns and learned to recognize them
immediately. As a result, she was able to beat skilled adult players by age 10 and can now play up
to five games at the same time without even seeing the boards. Make Me a Genius examines what
it takes to turn an ordinary brain into that of a genius.
If becoming a genius were easy, we'd all be one. Yet, there is much more to super intelligence than
simply being born lucky. Learn more about amazing brains this month on National Geographic's My
Brilliant Brain.

INSTRUCTIONS: Read the following information, and then complete the chart below with the missing information.
Cumbre Tajin is an annual artistic and cultural festival which is held in March. It is considered to be an “Identity festival” of the Totonacas, who are considered to be the guardians of El Tajín. During this festival, different kinds of events are held and some of them include traditional aspects of the Totonaca culture as well as modern arts and events from cultures from as far as the Tibet. Some of the events include fascinating musical concerts, experiencing a “temascal” and marvelous theatrical events in which musical, drama and fantasy shows are presented. Visiting El Tajin at night makes you feel really excited, with over 5,000 activities to enjoy and be part of.
Many of the cultural, craft and gastronomic events occur at the adjacent Takilhsukut Park which is located just outside the archeological site. In 2008, 160,000 attended the event which featured Fito Páez, Ximena Sariñana and Los tigres del norte. Thirty percent of the revenue that is generated from the event goes toward scholarships for the Totonaca youth.
In 2009, the event added the International Encounter of Voladores. For five days, Voladores from various places performed at the poles which are set at the site known as “Palo de los Voladores”. The objective was not only to see the different costumes and styles of the groups but to share experiences about the fertility ritual. Voladores came from as far as San Luis Potosi and Guatemala.
The Cumbre Tajín has been criticized for its emphasis on modern shows rather than on cultural events. One aspect that has been really pointed out is the illumination of pyramids at night without any kind of cultural historical instruction. The criticism is that it disrespects the site and the Totonaca people. There are also fears that large numbers of visitors to the site for events such as concerts by famous singers such as Alejandra Guzman, Miguel Bose cause damage to the site. However, the Centro de Artes Indígenas de Veracruz states that it works very hard to preserve and promote Totonaca culture through the festival sponsoring events such as traditional cooking, painting and the ritual of the Voladores.

TAPESCRIPT 1. MAGDA: I was surprised that Fargo won so many Academy Awards. I thought it was really a disturbing movie. Did you like it Jason? JASON: Well, I thought the acting was good, and the action was surprising. It never bored me. But, it doesn’t sound like your enjoyed the movie, Magda. What kinds of movies do you like? MAGDA: I like movies that have happy endings you know, the hero is the person who is trying to do the right thing, and finally in the end he does. I think Batman is one of the most exciting movies I’ve ever seen. I like to go to the movies for some excitement and entertainment. 2. HONG: Could you tell me what the teacher means when he says attendance is “mandatory”? SARAH: Well, that must mean that you have to go to class every day – you won’t be allowed to miss any classes. HONG: Oh. Maybe it means that the teacher will just lower my grade if I miss a class. What happens if I get sick and I’m not able to come to class? Do you think the teacher might allow me to make up work if I’m sick? SARAH: You’ve got to ask the teacher those questions I’m just the school secretary. I’m not allowed to make changes to a teacher’s rules. But I know that “mandatory” means something you must do. HONG: Oh, Okay. Thanks! SARAH: Sure. Glad to help. 3. PETER: Nancy, did you read about the school teacher who won the largest lottery in the state? NANCY: Yes, I still can’t believe that he is going to continue teaching. If I won that much money, I would quit my job immediately. PETER: That’s because you don’t like your job. If you had a job that you really liked, you might not want to give it up. NANCY: Well, what would you do if you had won the lottery, Peter?

PETER: I don’t know. I don’t think about things like that. NANCY: You don’t? I do all the time! 4. JOANNA: Hi, Alex. Are you here to help Lisa with her party, too? ALEX: Yeah, she asked me to come over today to help decorate. Is that why you’re here, Joanna JOANNA: No, she said that she needed me to help cook. I’m going to make appetizers for the party. ALEX: Oh good. I told her to ask you to do the cooking. JOANNA: Oh, you did? Well, I think this party is going to be fun. She said she invited everyone from class, a few of her neighbors, AND the Chicago Bulls basketball team was invited? ALEX: The Chicago Bulls basketball team? Did she really tell you that? She said that the Chicago Bulls Basketball team was invited? JOANNA: Well, of course, they’re invited. She’s a big fan of that team. However, she didn’t say whether they accepted! ALEX: Do you think any of the basketball players will really come to Lisa’s party? JOANNA: Nah! But Lisa thinks it’s worth asking.

Don’t tell anyone…
GRACE: (Phone rings) Hello?
BILL: Grace, it’s Bill.
GRACE: What’s up?
BILL: I’m so annoyed! Jack told me he saw Susan and her ex- boyfriend having
dinner together!
GRACE: Really? When?
BILL: Last night. Susan and I were supposed to go to the movies. Then she
called at last minute and she said she wasn’t feeling well.
GRACE: Oh, so she told you she couldn’t go.
BILL: Yeah. I said I understood. I told her that she should stay home and get
some rest.
GRACE: Good, so you expressed your concern.
BILL: Yeah, but instead of staying home, she went out!
GRACE: That’s terrible! She shouldn’t have done that.
BILL: I know. She shouldn’t have made an excuse. She should’ve just told me
the truth! Listen, don’t tell anyone, OK?
GRACE: Right. Uh, I have to go. I’ll talk to you later.
