CHICAGO – A jury found former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich guilty of 17 out of 20 charges, among them trying to sell the senate seat of Barack Obama before he was president.

Blagojevich, 54, was found guilty of corruption on June 27, after 10 days of deliberation by a jury of 12 people, 11 women and one man.

The former governor was found guilty of 10 charges of wire fraud and other charges of extortion and bribery.

After the jury read the verdict, his wife, Patti, collapsed by her brother and then hurried to her husband’s arms.

Meanwhile, Blagojevich told his defense attorney, Sheldon Sorosky “What happened?”

Outside the courthouse, Blagojevich talked to reporters, showing his disappointment and astonishment of the verdict.

“I frankly am stunned,” Blagojevich said while on his way out of the courthouse with his wife. “There’s not much left to say, other than we want to get home to our little girls and talk to them and explain things to them and then try to sort things out,” he said.

While his sentencing date has not been determined, he faces up to 300 years in prison, but according to federal sentencing guidelines, his time in prison will be shorter

than that. Some law experts speculate he may spend

about 10 years behind bars.Blagojevich, who is free on bond since

his arrest in December 2009, is the second consecutive governor in the state sentenced for corruption. His predecessor, George Ryan, is currently serving a 6 ½ year sentence in prison.

Because on his first trial for corruption charges, the jury only found Blagojevich guilty of one of 24 charges, and was deadlocked on the rest, a retrial was ordered. The only charge that he was found guilty of during the first trial was of lying to the FBI, which carries a sentence of five years in prison.

The charges that Blagojevich tried to benefit from the appointment of a replacement for Barack Obama’s Senate seat lead to his impeachment in 2009.

In this second trial, Blagojevich was found guilty of 17 charges. He was found not guilty of soliciting bribes in the alleged shakedown of a road-building executive.

The jury did not agree on two charges of attempted extortion related to that executive and funding for a school.

Judge James Zagel has prohibited Blagojevich from traveling outside the Chicago area, unless he gets approval from the judge. A status hearing for his sentencing has been set for Aug. 1.

INDIANAPOLIS – Two federal judges have blocked the implementation of several aspects of two immigration laws that were recently approved in Indiana and Georgia. Both laws were supposed to become effective July 1.

U.S. District Judge Sarah Evans Barker issued a preliminary injunction June 24, which prevents some parts of the law from becoming effective in Indiana.

Barker’s decision was in response to a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana and the National Immigration Law Center.

Judge Baker’s order prevents people who have an outstanding deportation order from an immigration judge from being arrested by the local or state police. Barker said that Indiana’s bill didn’t include a provision that would allow a person who has been arrested to request to be brought before a judge for potential release.

The judge said that, under federal law, a foreign national can seek to overturn an immigration judge’s removal order and be free on bond.

The judge’s order also blocks the provision that prohibits accepting consular IDs as a valid form of identification.

Faced with this determination, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said in a statement that this decision represented “an indictment of the federal government” for failing to “enact and enforce immigration policy.”

He also said that “It underscores the challenge to Indiana and other state lawmakers who have tried to respond to Washington’s failure.”

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce, as well as some immigrant advocacy groups, said they are opposed to the measures included in this law, saying the fight against illegal immigration is a responsibility of the federal government.

Meanwhile in Georgia, U.S. District Judge Thomas W. Thrash Jr. issued a temporary injunction on June 27, blocking the application of two parts of the Georgia immigration law known as HB 87.

The sections blocked by the judge include the requirement that law enforcement officials must check the immigration status of suspects who cannot provide identification and the punishment of suspects who intentionally transport or house somebody who they know is in the country illegally.

Judge Thrash Jr. said the state was trying to write immigration laws that would pre-empt federal statute.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said that the state is going to appeal the judge’s decision. In a statement made public by his spokesman, Deal said that “Beyond refusing to help with our state’s illegal immigration problem, the federal government is determined to be an obstacle.”

Legislators who are trying to stop the influx of illegal immigrants to the state have called this ruling a partial victory, saying it will give them time to fine-tune the law so it can be approved by the courts.

Una nueva versión del Acta de Desarrollo, Alivio y Educación para Extranjeros Menores (DREAM Act) varía ligeramente de la aprobada por la Cámara de Representantes el mes de diciembre pasado, y que fue transferida al Senado, donde no obtuvo los votos suficientes para ser adoptada.

Al igual que en versiones anteriores, la propuesta otorgaría estatus legal condicional a jóvenes que califiquen que estén en los Estados Unidos de forma ilegal, que hayan llegado aquí cuando tenían menos de 16 años, si van a la universidad o se enlistan en el ejército.

Bajo la propuesta actual, la edad límite para los solicitantes es 29 años. También el tiempo de estatus legal condicional antes de que los solicitantes puedan obtener su residencia permanente es de seis años.

Bajo este programa, lo más rápido que una persona puede convertirse en ciudadano de los Estados Unidos y votar sería doce años: seis años como residente legal condicional, y después cinco años de requisito como residente legal y después el proceso de solicitud de ciudadanía. Así que se tardaría aproximadamente 12 años antes de que alguien pudiera convertirse en ciudadano y votar.

Para obtener un estatus legal permanente, además de tener un buen carácter moral durante el período condicional, los

beneficiarios necesitarían: a) obtener un título de una institución de educación superior o cuando menos terminar dos años de carrera universitaria en buenos términos para obtener una licenciatura u otro título de educación superior; b) servir cuando menos dos años en servicios uniformados, y si se da de baja, que sea una baja honorable.

La propuesta fue escuchada por el subcomité de inmigración, refugiados y seguridad fronteriza del Comité Judicial del Senado.

El senador estadounidense Richard Durbin es un patrocinador de la propuesta, al igual que muchos otros importantes demócratas.

Si la propuesta tiene suficientes senadores que la apoyen y se aprueba, entonces tiene que ir a la Cámara de Representantes, donde será debatida. Si pasa, entonces solo espera que el presidente la firme o la vete.

Muchas personas creen que el Acta DREAM debe ser parte de un paquete de reforma migratoria integral. Otros creen que el Acta DREAM debe ser considerada aparte. Solo el tiempo dirá dónde termina esta nueva propuesta legislativa.

A new version of the federal Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM Act) differs only slightly by the one approved by the House of Representatives last December, which moved to the Senate but failed to draw enough votes for passage.

Like prior versions, the bill would grant conditional legal status to qualifying young people who are in the United States illegally, but were brought here as minors under 16, so long as they attend college or join the military.

Under the current bill, the age cap for applicants is 29 years old. Also the length of conditional legal status before applicants may obtain permanent legal status is six years.

Under this program, the earliest a person could become a United States citizen and vote would be approximately 12 years: six years as a conditional legal resident, then five years requirement as a permanent legal resident and then the processing of the naturalization application, so it would be approximately 12 years before someone could become a U.S. citizen and therefore vote.

To obtain permanent legal status, in addition to maintaining good moral character during the conditional period, beneficiaries would need to: a) acquire a degree from an institute of higher learning, or at least completed two years in good standings towards a bachelors or higher degree; b) serve at least two years in uniformed services and if discharged, receive an honorable discharge.

The bill was heard by the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on immigration, refugees and border security.

U.S. Senator Richard Durbin is a sponsor of the bill along with many other prominent Democrats.

If the bill has enough U.S. senators to support it and passed, then it would have to go to the U.S. House of Representatives where it will be debated, and if it passes then, of course, it’s just waiting for the President to sign or veto the bill.

Many people believe the DREAM Act should be part of a larger comprehensive immigration reform package. Some people believe the DREAM Act should stand alone.

Only time will tell where this new piece of legislation ends up.

AURORA – A bright and sunny day was the perfect backdrop for the 5th anniversary celebration of Nuestra Clinica de Aurora, a clinic that provides services to the Hispanic community in Aurora.

“We are celebrating our fifth year anniversary. It’s a way of giving thanks to our community for helping us out,” Dr. Gabriel Rivera said.

The celebration took place June 25, from noon to 4 p.m. at the clinic, located at 645 E. New York St., Aurora. The clinic has been at this location since they opened their doors five years ago.

The clinic provides treatment for headaches, neck and back pain, as well as physical therapy, rehabilitation, chiropractic care, X rays, acupuncture and orthopedics services to residents in the greater Aurora area.

The event was well attended. People were able to enjoy live music, snacks and raffles. Among the prizes were two bicycles, gift cards, DVD players and grills.

The celebration also featured a spinning wheel where people were able to win other gifts.

“It’s a way of showing our appreciation to our customers,” Dr. Rivera said.

La celebración se realizó el 25 de junio de 12 a 4 p.m. en sus instalaciones, 645 E. New York St., en Aurora, el lugar en el que han estado desde hace cinco años que abrieron sus puertas.

La clínica se especializa en dar tratamiento para dolores de cabeza, cuello y espalda, asó como servicios de terapia física, rehabilitación, quiropráctica, rayos X, acupuntura y ortopedia a la comunidad hispana de Aurora y ciudades vecinas.

Un nutrido grupo de personas asistió a esta celebración, que incluyó música en vivo, entretenimiento y rifas de dos bicicletas, tarjetas de regalo, reproductores de DVD, asadores y una rueda de la fortuna con la que

también los asistentes se llevaron otros premios. También pudieron disfrutar de deliciosos bocadillos.

“Es una forma de mostrar nuestro agradecimiento a nuestros clientes”, dijo el doctor Rivera.

AURORA – Cinco personas, incluyendo dos bomberos, fueron transportados a un hospital de la ciudad la madrugada del 25 de junio, debido a un incendio en el lado este.

El fuego inició a las 3:56 a.m. dentro de un apartamento ubicado en un complejo de 96 unidades en la cuadra 900 de Second Avenue.

La causa del incendio está bajo investigación.

Una mujer de 55 años de edad, residente del apartamento donde fue controlado el incendio, sufrió quemaduras severas y fue trasladada al Centro Médico Loyola University en Maywood, después de recibir tratamiento inicial en el Centro Médico Rush-Copley.

Ella está recibiendo tratamiento por quemaduras de tercer grado en 15 por ciento de su cuerpo. Otras dos mujeres, de 22 y 45 años quienes

vivían en departamentos cercanos recibieron tratamiento por inhalación de humo. Sus heridas no son consideradas que amenazan la vida.

Cuando los bomberos llegaron al lugar, encontraron una fuerte capa de humo en todo el tercer piso. Los bomberos rescataron a tres personas dentro del edificio y otras siete de ventanas del tercer piso.

Un bombero sufrió heridas leves cuando fue golpeado con una herramienta cuando combatía el incendio y otro recibió tratamiento por golpe de calero. Ambos recibieron tratamiento y fueron dados de alta del Centro Médico Rush-Copley.

AURORA – Five people including two firefighters were taken to an Aurora hospital after an early fire June 25 on the city’s near east side.

The fire broke out at 3:56 a.m. inside a third floor apartment at a 96-unit complex in the 900 block of Second Avenue.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

A 55 year-old woman, a resident of the apartment where the fire was contained, suffered severe burns and was transported to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood after receiving initial treatment at Rush Copley Medical Center. She is being treated for third-degree burns over 15 percent of her body.

Two other women, ages 22

and 45 who lived in nearby apartments, were treated at Rush-Copley for smoke inhalation. Their injuries are non-life threatening.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found heavy smoke throughout the entire third floor. They rescued three people from inside the building and seven from third floor windows.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries when he was hit with a piece of equipment while fighting the fire and another was treated for heat exhaustion. They were both treated and released at Rush Copley Medical Center.

Damage to the four-story apartment building was estimated at $75,000.

ELGIN – Dos hombres, uno de Rockford y otro de Elgin, fueron detenidos por la policía después de que entraran a robar en una casa mientras había una adolescente adentro.

Salvador C. Sarabia de 28 años y residente de Elgin, así como Fidel Romero, de 27 años y residente de Rockford, fueron acusados por robo residencial.

La joven estaba dentro de su casa en la cuadra 100 de Neutrenton Avenue alrededor

de las 9:45 a.m. el 27 de junio, cuando los dos hombres rompieron el vidrio de la puerta principal de la vivienda y entraron.

La joven se escondió en el sótano, desde donde llamó a la policía, que llegó a la casa cuando los sospechosos todavía estaban adentro.

Los dos sospechosos se llevaron una televisión de pantalla plana y otros artículos antes de ser detenidos por las autoridades. Uno de los sospechosos se rindió de inmediato, mientras que el otro intentó huir y fue capturado poco tiempo

después.

GENEVA – Una mujer de 27 años de edad quien ha estado viviendo en el área de Aurora por el último mes, ha sido acusada de homicidio involuntario en la muerte de su hija de 14 meses de edad, la más pequeña de sus nueve hijos.

Gloria Gómez, admitió ante las autoridades que ella había golpeado a su bebé, Aleidy Gómez.

Elementos de la oficina del Alguacil del Condado de Kane y del Departamento de Bomberos de North Aurora respondieron la madrugada del 23 de junio a una llamada de auxilio en un área no incorporada de Aurora Township, cuando se reportó que una bebé estaba inconsciente y no respiraba.

La niña fue transportada al hospital Provena Mercy Center, donde falleció poco después.

No había señales evidentes de heridas o de causa de muerte, por lo que se realizó una autopsia, que reveló la existencia de heridas

internas.El juez James Hallock dijo durante la

presentación inicial de Gómez en la corte que ella había admitido ante las autoridades que había golpeado a la bebé “con fuerza numerosas veces”.

El juez fijó una fianza de 250 mil dólares para Gómez, quien además tiene una orden de detención del Departamento de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE).

Al momento del incidente se encontraban otros tres hijos de Gómez viviendo con ella. Los menores, de 3 5 y 8 años de edad, fueron colocados en hogares

de crianza por el Departamento de Niños y Servicios a Familias del estado.

Los hijos restantes de la acusada viven en México y no se conocen detalles sobre ellos.

De ser encontrada culpable de homicidio involuntario, Gómez enfrenta hasta siete años en prisión. Su próxima aparición en la corte está programada para el 6 de julio.

GENEVA – A 27 year-old woman, who has been living in the Aurora area for the past month, has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of her 14-month-old daughter, the youngest of nine children.

Gloria Gomez told authorities she had hit the baby, Aleidy Gomez.

Kane County Sheriff’s officers and North Aurora Fire Department EMS officers answered a call early June 23. The call from an unincorporated Aurora Township residence stated that a 14-month-old baby was unconscious and not breathing.

The girl was taken to Provena Mercy Center, where she died a short time later.

There were no evident signals of external injuries or cause of death. An autopsy revealed that there were internal injuries.

Judge James Hallock said during Gomez court appearance that she had admitted to officers that she had hit the baby “numerous times forcefully.”

The judge set a $250,000 bond for Gomez, who also has an immigration detainer from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency.

At the time of the incident Gomez was with three of her children besides Aleidy. Those children were placed on foster care homes by the Department of Children and Family Services.

The rest of Gomez’ children live in Mexico and there is no more information available about them.

If found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, Gomez faces up to seven years in prison. Her next court date has been scheduled for July 6.

Reckinger Road bridge closed four months for construction

AURORA – The Reckinger Road bridge, on Aurora’s northeast side, will be closed to traffic beginning July 5, to be replaced. The construction is expected to last about four months.

The work includes the removal and installation of the bridge, the relocation of various utilities an droadway improvements.

During construction Reckinger Road will

be closed to through traffic between Austin and Farnsworth Avenues. Detour signs wil be posted directing motorists to use Indian Trail and Molitor Roads as alternate routes.

The bridge was built originally in 1933 and is narrow by today’s standards. The new bridge will be wider and include sidewalks on both sides.

The area is expected to reopen to traffic in November, barring any unforeseen delays with weather and construction.

CHICAGO – Las personas que viajen en el asiento trasero de un vehículo ahora tienen que abrocharse el cinturón de seguridad, después de que se aprobara una nueva ley en Illinois.

Anteriormente la ley de estado exigía que los pasajeros adultos en el asiento delantero y los pasajeros menores de 18 años de edad

que se abrocharan el cinturón de seguridad.La policía podrá detener a los automovilistas

si se dan cuenta que un pasajero no utiliza el cinturón de seguridad. Las multas empiezan en 25 dólares.

Este cambio en la ley, que entrará en efecto el 1 de enero de 2012, no se aplica a los pasajeros de taxis, autobuses o que viajan en vehículos de emergencia como patrullas y ambulancias.

The previous law stated that adults traveling in the front seat or people under 18 years of age riding in a vehicle were required

to wear seat belts.With the new law police will have the

authority to stop drivers if they notice a passenger in the car not wearing a seatbelt. Fines will start at $25.

The law will become effective Jan 1, 2012 and is not applicable to taxi or bus passengers of people riding emergency vehicles such as squad cars or ambulances.

ELGIN – Two men, one from Rockford and another one from Elgin, were arrested by police after they broke into a home while a teenager was inside.

Salvador C. Sarabia, 28, of Elgin and Fidel Romero, 27, of Rockford, were charged with residential burglary.

The teenager was in her home in the 100 block of Neutrenton Avenue at about 9:45 a.m. June 27, when the two men broke the

glass from the front door and entered the residence.

She hid in the basement and called police. Officers arrived while the men were still inside the home.

The two suspects stole a large flat screen television and other items before being arrested by police.

One of the suspects surrendered immediately to authorities while the other tried to escape but was captured a short time later.

AURORA – It has been a year since Torresmania #3 Restaurant opened its doors and it has become a favorite spot for people in Aurora and surrounding communities.

The restaurant, located at 3 S. Lincoln Ave in downtown Aurora has quickly become a favorite restaurant for Mexican food lovers.

The restaurant is administered by the Torres siblings: Olivia, Teresa and José. They also administer the other two restaurants owned by their family: Torresmania #1 and Torresmania #2.

The food at Torresmania #3 is different from other spots because it incorporates the traditional flavors of central and southern Mexico, with ingredients like squash blossom and epazote.

“Our meats are prepared with different ingredients,” Teresa said, and then Juan added that the ingredients “are based in the places we come from.”

The Torres siblings are from Mexico City but their family roots are in Guanajuato.

Jose’s 23-year experience working in kitchens in the United States has prompted him to create a menu with traditional meals at its core, but adding dishes influenced by flavors from other Mexican states.

“Our recipes are in part family recipes, and we have mixed them while we experiment with different types of food,” Jose said. “We always take the client’s input into account, without losing our traditional flavor.”

Torresmania #3 has two specialty dishes: Torresmania Combo, which includes a stuffed pepper and ranchero-style steak. The other specialty is Surf and Turf grill, which includes shrimp, octopus, crab, fish, grilled steak and chicken and beef fajitas.

The Torres siblings have made customer service a top priority. They are always aware of

El restaurante, ubicado en el 3 S. Lincoln Ave. En el centro de Aurora rápidamente se ha convertido en un lugar favorito de los amantes de la comida mexicana.

Este restaurante, al igual que Torresmanía #1 y Torresmanía #2 son atendidos y administrados por los hermanos Torres: Olivia, Teresa y José.

La comida en Torresmanía # 3 se distingue porque incorpora sabores tradicionales de la comida del centro y sur de México, como son el epazote y la flor de calabaza.

“Nuestras carnes se preparan con ingredientes diferentes” dijo Teresa, a lo que Juan complementó que “están basados de los lugares que venimos”.

Los hermanos Torres son originarios de la Ciudad de México, con raíces en el estado de Guanajuato.

La experiencia de José, quien ha trabajado por 23 años en distintos restaurantes en Estados Unidos, le ha llevado a crear un menú en el que la comida tradicional es la base, pero también cuenta con la influencia de sabores y guisos de distintos estados de México.

“Nuestras recetas son en parte familiares y las hemos mezclado al experimentar con diferentes tipos de comida”, dijo José. “Siempre tomamos en cuenta la opinión del cliente, sin perder el toque tradicional”.

En el Restaurante Torresmanía #3 hay dos platillos que son especialidad de la casa: La Combinación Torresmanía que incluye un chile relleno con bistec ranchero y la Parrillada Mar y Tierra, que lleva camarón, pulpo, jaiba, pescado, carne asada y fajitas de pollo y de res.

Los hermanos Torres brindan una atención especial al servicio al cliente. Siempre están atentos a las solicitudes de los clientes, para complacerlos.

Prueba de ello es que recientemente recibieron

la licencia para vender bebidas alcohólicas con la comida, algo que los clientes solicitaron desde la apertura del restaurante el 4 de junio de 2010.

El tener permiso para vender bebidas alcohólicas no significa que haya perdido el toque familiar.

“A pesar de los permisos, siempre hemos pensado que el ambiente familiar es lo primordial”, dijo José.

La atención al detalle, así como precios accesibles y un excelente sabor los han colocado en el gusto de la gente.

“La comida es buena y económica, al alcance de los bolsillos de todos” dijo Olivia, a lo que Teresa complementó que “el 99 por ciento de los clientes nos dicen que tenemos buen servicio, precios razonables y buena comida”.

Unidad familiarLa aventura llamada Torresmanía comenzó

hace aproximadamente seis años, cuando los hermanos Torres tuvieron la oportunidad de comprar un restaurante en Plano, al que llamaron Torresmanía #1.

El nombre del restaurante surgió porque siempre han estado orgullosos de su nombre y querían que su negocio estuviera relacionado con su apellido.

La familia se reunía con frecuencia para celebraciones y para ver programas de televisión. En una de esas reuniones estaban viendo el programa “Wrestlemania” de lucha libre y de ahí surgió la idea de Torresmanía.

De Plano surgió la oportunidad de establecer un negocio de antojitos mexicanos en el interior de la gasolinera ubicada en la esquina de las calles Lincoln y Galena, donde los platillos preparados son tradicionales y hechos a mano. Lo llamaron Torresmanía #2.

Poco después establecieron el restaurante en Aurora.

A lo largo de esta travesía la familia siempre ha estado unida y ha enfrentado los retos que se les presentan para salir adelante, pero el motor principal ha sido José.

El esfuerzo conjunto ha hecho que su negocio haya echado raíces y se esté fortaleciendo.

La unidad familiar es algo que les transmitieron

sus padres y ahora ellos están transmitiendo este estilo de vida a sus hijos y cónyuges, quienes colaboran en alguno de los tres restaurantes en la medida de sus capacidades.

El núcleo familiar se ha expandido para incluir a los empleados, quienes han aportado su talento y su trabajo para hacer de los restaurantes un éxito.

“Queremos agradecer a los trabajadores que son como parte de la familia. Sin ellos no hubiéramos podido lograr lo que hemos logrado hasta ahora”, dijo José.

Family unityThe adventure called Torresmania started

about 6 years ago, when the Torres siblings had the opportunity to purchase a restaurant in Plano, Illinois, which they called Torresmania #1.

The restaurant name came about because they have always been proud of their family name and they wanted their business name to be linked to their family name.

The family holds frequent reunions for celebrations or just to watch TV shows. One day they were watching “Wrestlemania” and that’s how the name “Torresmania” came out.

Once established in Plano they had the opportunity to open a Mexican snacks place in Aurora. It was called Torresmania #2. The business is located in a gas station at the corner

of Lincoln and Galena Blvd. in Aurora, where they sell traditional Mexican snacks freshly prepared on site.

A short time later they established Torresmania #3 in downtown Aurora.

Throughout this venture the family has always been together and has faced the challenges, but their strength has been Jose.

Both Olivia and Teresa agreed that Jose has transferred his love of Mexican food and Mexican cooking to them, as well as his positive attitude.

“Everything we have done thus far has been because of him, and we are thankful he decided to take the risk,” Olivia said.

Torresmania #3 opened its doors in the middle of an economic recession in the United States.

“It hasn’t been easy, but we are proud of the comments made by people, of the support from the community and from El Paso, who have supported us to move forward,” Teresa said.

Their joint effort has allowed them to establish their business and continue on a solid path.

The family unity is something their parents taught them and now they are teaching that same lifestyle to their children and spouses, who help out in any way they can at the three restaurants.

The family unit has expanded to include their employees, who with their effort and hard work have made the restaurants a success.

“We want to thank our employees who are like part of our family. Without them we couldn’t have done what we have accomplished,” Jose said.

MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities will investigate the report of the kidnapping of at least 80 undocumented migrants from Central America in southern Mexico, who apparently were taken away by the crime organization “Los Zetas.”

According to the report filed by several migrants who escaped, the kidnappings took place June 24 in Medias Aguas, a town in the state of Veracruz.

The report states that men with R-15 rifles intercepted the train known as “The Beast”, commonly used by migrants to get from southern Mexico to the U.S. border.

The report was filed with the Federal Attorney General’s office (PGR) in the states of Veracruz and Oaxaca, as the incident happened in the limits between those two states.

The witnesses who filed the report said the migrants were taken by force and placed in three Suburban-type trucks.

The incident was originally reported to a priest, Alejandro Solalinde, who administers a shelter for migrants called “Brothers on the Road” in the state of Oaxaca. His shelter is used by many undocumented migrants on their way north.

Those who escaped said there were about 250 people on the train and most of them were from Honduras and Guatemala.

While the official report indicates that about 80 migrants were kidnapped, Solalinde said in an interview with Grupo Imagen Multimedia that at

least 129 migrants were kidnapped, but that the number could be as high as 250.

Meanwhile, diplomatic officers from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala said they would ask the Mexican government to find out exactly what happened.

The witnesses who reported the kidnappings are from El Salvador and Guatemala. They are currently under protection of the PGR and won’t be deported by the National Migration Institute until the investigation of the case is finished.

CD. DE MEXICO – Autoridades mexicanas investigarán la denuncia de secuestro de cuando menos 80 inmigrantes indocumentados centroamericanos en el sur de México, sucedido aparentemente a manos de la organización delictiva ‘Los Zetas’.

De acuerdo a la denuncia realizada por varios migrantes que lograron escapara del secuestro, los hechos ocurrieron en la población de Medias Aguas, en el estado de Veracruz el 24 de junio.

En la denuncia se asienta que hombres armados con fusiles R-15 interceptaron el tren conocido como “La Bestia”, comúnmente utilizado por los indocumentados para llegar a la frontera de México con Estados Unidos.

La denuncia se hizo ante la Procuraduría General de la República en los estados de Veracruz y Oaxaca, ya que los hechos sucedieron en los límites entre ambos estados.

Los testigos que hicieron la denuncia dijeron que los migrantes secuestrados fueron subidos a la fuerza a tres camionetas tipo Suburban.

Estos hechos fueron reportados inicialmente al sacerdote Alejandro Solalinde, quien administra el albergue “Hermanos del Camino” en Oaxaca, por donde pasan muchos indocumentados centroamericanos en camino hacia Estados Unidos.

Los que lograron escapar dijeron que en el tren viajaban alrededor de 250 migrantes, originarios principalmente de Honduras y Guatemala.

Mientras que el reporte oficial ante las autoridades indica que son alrededor de 80 los migrantes secuestrados, en una entrevista con el Grupo Imagen Multimedia, Solalinde dijo que al menos 129 inmigrantes fueron secuestrados, pero que el número podría subir a 250.

Por su parte, las autoridades diplomáticas de El Salvador, Honduras y Guatemala dijeron que solicitarán al gobierno de México que aclare el secuestro de migrantes centroamericanos.

Los testigos que reportaron el secuestro son migrantes de El Salvador y Guatemala, y se encuentran bajo la protección de la PGR. Ellos no serán deportados por el Instituto Nacional de Migración hasta que concluyan las investigaciones del caso.

Incendio en Nuevo México amenaza instalación nuclear de Los Álamos

NUEVO MÉXICO – Un incendio en el estado de Nuevo México ha llegado hasta las instalaciones del complejo nuclear de Los Álamos, mientras los bomberos luchan por contener su expansión.

El fuego llamado Las Conchas ha incendiado casi 70 mil acres de terrenos cubiertos de pinos desde que empezó el 26 de junio en el Bosque Nacional Santa Fe.

Como precaución, las autoridades han cerrado una tubería de gas natural enterrada que se encuentra en el área noreste del incendio.

Oficiales del laboratorio de Los Álamos han comenzado a cerrar líneas de gas desde que el incendio empezar a acechar las instalaciones esta semana.

Tanto los 12 mil empleados del laboratorio como la población de Los Álamos, un pueblo de 10 mil habitantes, fueron evacuados el 27 de junio y no se espera que puedan regresar hasta principios de julio.

Distintos grupos de vigilancia de desechos radioactivos han expresado su preocupación porque un área del complejo nuclear donde

se almacenan 20 mil tambos de metal con desperdicios contaminados con plutonio se encuentra a alrededor de 3 millas del fuego.

Sin embargo, oficiales del laboratorio dijeron que estos despojos nucleares de baja radiación se encuentran alejados de árboles y otro tipo de vegetación, y que se puede rociar espuma que retarda el fuego sobre el área en el caso de que las flamas amenacen con llegar hasta ahí.

Oficiales del laboratorio dijeron que no se ha liberado radiación a la atmósfera como resultado de este incendio.

El laboratorio cubre un área de 36 millas cuadradas e incluye alrededor de dos mil edificios, ninguno de los cuales ha sido alcanzado por las llamas.

El complejo también contiene 3 toneladas métricas de plutonio altamente radioactivo para armamento, almacenado en bóvedas de concreto y acero en el sótano de un edificio cercano al centro del complejo.

Equipos de bomberos de Wyoming, Texas, Colorado, Utah y California han llegado a la zona para luchar contra el incendio, que se cree comenzó cuando un árbol cayó sobre unas líneas de servicio eléctrico.

New Mexico fire threatens Los Alamos nuclear facility

NEW MEXICO – A fire in the state of New Mexico has reached the facilities of the Los Alamos nuclear complex, while firefighters keep trying to contain the blaze.

The so-called Las Conchas fire has burned about 70,000 acres of pine covered terrain since it started at the Santa Fe National Forest.

As a precaution, authorities have shut down a buried gas line that is located in an area northwest of the fire line.

Lab officials also have started shutting down gas lines at the Los Alamos complex since the fire started surrounding the lab earlier this week.

The 12,000 lab employees as well as the 10,000 residents of Los Alamos were evacuated June 27 and are not expected to return to their homes or lab until at least early July.

Several nuclear watchdog groups have expressed concern because an area of the nuclear facility where 20,000

steel drums that contain plutonium-contaminated waste are now about three miles from the fire line.

However, lab officials said this low-radiation waste is located in an area away from trees and vegetation, and that fire-retardant foam can be sprayed on the area in case the fire reaches that zone.

Lab officials said no radiation has been released in to the environment as a result of the fire.

The lab covers 36 square miles and there are about 2,000 buildings in the complex, none of them have been damaged by the fire so far.

The complex also houses 3 metric tons of highly-radioactive weapons-grade plutonium, stored in concrete and steel vaults in the basement of a building located near the center of the complex.

Firefighting teams from Wyoming, Texas, Colorado, Utah and California have arrived at the area to fight the blaze, which is believed to have started when a tree fell on a power line.

Ocho seleccionados del Tri expulsados por escándalo sexual en Ecuador

CD. DE MÉXICO – Ocho jugadores seleccionados mexicanos, que estaban en preparación para participar en la Copa América, fueron expulsados de la selección después de verse involucrados con sexoservidoras.

Los jugadores expulsados por la Federación Mexicana de Futbol son Israel Jiménez, Néstor Vidrio, Johathan Dos Santos, Marco Fabian, Jorge Hernández, David Cabrera, Javier Cortés y Néstor Calderón.

Ellos fueron reemplazados por ocho jugadores que inmediatamente tuvieron que partir hacia Sudamérica. Los nuevos convocados son: Kristian Álvarez, Diego Debuen, Antonio Gallardo, Edgar Pacheco, Alan Pulido, Ulises Dávila, Carlos Emilio Orrantia y Osvaldo Alanís.

Además de su expulsión, no podrán jugar con la selección en un plazo de seis meses y serán multados con 50 mil pesos cada uno. El dinero de las multas será destinado a organizaciones de beneficencia pública.

Todo surgió a raíz de un reporte de robo que hicieron algunos miembros de la Selección Nacional mientras se encontraban en Quito para un partido de preparación rumbo a la Copa América, a realizarse en Argentina y en la que participará la Selección Sub 22 de México.

Los hechos sucedieron el 24 y 25 de junio en el hotel Quito de la capital ecuatoriana.

El 25 de junio, al regresar del partido amistoso que sostuvieron contra Ecuador y que ganaron por la mínima diferencia, algunos jugadores mexicanos avisaron que de sus habitaciones se habían substraído computadoras, ipads, celulares y otros artículos.

La embajada de México presentó una denuncia por robo de bienes por valor de 15 mil 300 dólares y pidió la colaboración de los administradores del hotel para esclarecer el robo.

Ante esto un representante del hotel dijo que el personal de utilería de la selección azteca había permitido la entrada de “mujeres” a las habitaciones, de acuerdo con videos que ellos tenían en su poder.

De acuerdo a una entrevista realizada a uno de los administradores del hotel, se especula que las mujeres salieron de las habitaciones de los jugadores, llevándose las llaves, que posteriormente entregaron a sus cómplices quienes llevaron a cabo el robo cuando los jugadores no estaban en el hotel.

Los jugadores fueron suspendidos por violar el reglamento de

la dirección general de Selecciones Nacionales.El reglamento indica que los convocados deben “observar una

disciplina intachable” y que quedan terminantemente prohibidas las visitas en las habitaciones de los hoteles.

El director de Selecciones Nacionales, Héctor González Iñárritu, dijo en una conferencia de prensa que la falta cometida fue grave y pidió disculpas a la afición.

“Son jóvenes y se pueden equivocar, aunque también se deben asumir las consecuencias, asumir una responsabilidad”, dijo González Iñárritu. “También extiendo una disculpa para toda la afición por este tipo de sucesos que no deberán presentarse más”.

entender mediante su cuenta en Twitter que no todos los jugadores suspendidos son culpables, y que hay algunos culpables que fueron protegidos por el equipo.

"Unas disculpas a todos, pero pues era un grupo y al final se destruyó. Y por ayudar a unos compañeros, la llevamos varios. Que sirva de experiencia", escribió Israel Jiménez, de Tigres, en la red social.

Aparentemente el equipo se comprometió a salvar a quienes tenían más que perder con este escándalo, jugadores casados, sacrificando a algunos inocentes.

Se dice que hay cuando menos otros cuatro integrantes más del equipo que participaron de los encuentros con las sexoservidoras, pero que no fueron suspendidos. Tres de ellos están casados y un cuarto fue protegido porque compartía la habitación con uno de los ocho suspendidos.

El escándalo de la Selección Mexicana le dio la vuelta al mundo, acaparando las primeras planas de las secciones deportivas de prestigiosos diarios.

Eight Mexican National Team members suspended for sexual scandal in Ecuador

MEXICO CITY – Eight Mexican National Team players who were in training sessions to participate in the America Cup were expelled from the team after they got involved with prostitutes.

The players sanctioned by the Mexican Soccer Federation are Israel Jimenez, Nestor Vidrio, Johnathan Dos Santos, Marco Fabian, Jorge Hernandez, David Cabrera, Javier Cortez and Nestor Calderon.

They were replaced by eight players who had to make urgent travel arrangements to meet the National Team in South America. The new players are: Kristian Alvarez, Diego Debuen, Antonio Gallardo, Edgar Pacheco, Alan Pulido, Ulises Davila, Carlos Emilio Orrantia and Osvaldo Alanis.

Besides being thrown out of the team, none of the players can be called back to the national team in the next six months and they also have to pay a 50,000 pesos fine. The money from the fines will be donated to non-profit organizations.

The scandal broke after some team players reported items stolen from their rooms while they were in Quito, Ecuador for a training

match in preparation for the America Cup, which will take place in Argentina. The Sub 22 Mexican National Team will play in that tournament.

The incident took place June 24 and 25 at the Quito Hotel in the capital city of Ecuador.

On June 25, when the players came back from a friendly match against Ecuador, which they won for the minimum advantage, some Mexican players reported there were items missing from their rooms, including laptop computers, ipads, cell phones and other items.

The Mexican Embassy got involved and filed a theft report in the amount of $15,300. The embassy also asked the hotel administration for their help in solving this theft.

A hotel representative then said that support personnel for the Mexican National Team had allowed “women” to enter the player’s hotel rooms, according to videos they had.

According to an interview with one of the hotel managers, the women left the rooms with the room keys, which then they gave to their accomplices, who entered the rooms while the players were away.

The players were thrown out of the team for violating the rules of the General Office of

National Teams.The rules state that the players must “have

spotless behavior” and that any visits to the player’s rooms are forbidden.

The Director of National Teams, Hector Gonzalez Iñarritu, said during a press conference that the players made a big mistake and asked the fans for forgiveness.

“They are young and can make mistakes, but they also must face the consequences and be responsible,” Gonzalez Iñarritu said. “I also offer my apologies to the fans because these incidents are not going to happen again.”

Not everybody was includedMeanwhile, one of the players expelled from

the team used his Twitter account to convey the message that not all the expelled players are guilty and that some of the guilty players

remained in the team.“An apology to all, but this was a team and

in the end it got destroyed. And for helping out some teammates, several of us got burned. It must be taken as an experience,” wrote Israel Jimenez.

It seems the team made a commitment to save the players who were standing to lose the most, married players, sacrificing others instead.

It is said that at least four players who remained in the team were in the rooms with the prostitutes, but t hey were not expelled. Three of them were married and a fourth one was protected because he was the roommate of one of the expelled players.

The scandal made the front of the sports section of several prestigious newspapers worldwide.

MIAMI – ‘The Golden Girl’, Paulina Rubio, was involved in an altercation with Miami police officers and she was arrested over the weekend.

Late June 25 Rubio had a minor traffic accident, which apparently wasn’t her fault. However, when officers responded to the scene to make a report of the incident, Rubio refused to leave her vehicle. When an officer forced her to do so, she was told she was under arrest and was handcuffed.

According to entertainment news site TMZ, the singer was handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car. When this happened, she was yelling, asking for help.

“Help me! Help me! I didn’t do anything! Look at what you are doing! Help! Abusers! You are liars! Help me!” Rubio was yelling in Spanish while fighting off the officers.

Witnesses said the singer spent quite some time inside the police squad, finally calming down and then

apologized to the officers. But this wasn’t enough and she now faces a report of disorderly conduct, obstruction of justice and refusal to obey a legal order.

Rubio was freed when she informed the authorities she had a six-month-old baby whom she was breastfeeding, and didn’t have to spend the night in jail.

However, she will have to face the charges when she is due in court in the next few weeks.

MIAMI – ‘La Chica Dorada’ protagonizó un pleito con oficiales de policía de Miami, por lo que fue arrestada el fin de semana.

La noche del 25 de junio Rubio tuvo un accidente menor de tránsito, del cual aparentemente ella no tuvo la culpa. Sin embargo, cuando los oficiales respondieron a levantar el reporte del incidente, Rubio se negó a bajar del automóvil. Cuando un oficial la obligó a hacerlo y le informó que estaba bajo arresto y procedió a esposarla.

De acuerdo al sitio de noticias de entretenimiento TMZ, la cantante fue esposada y colocada en una patrulla. Ante esto, ella se puso a gritar pidiendo ayuda.

“¡Ayuda! ¡Ayuda! ¡Yo no hice nada! ¡Mira lo que están haciendo! ¡Ayuda! ¡Abusadores! ¡Ustedes son unos mentirosos! ¡Ayuda!, gritó Rubio en español durante el altercado.

Testigos dijeron que la cantante pasó un buen rato en la patrulla, donde se tranquilizó y pidió perdón a los oficiales. Sin embargo esto no fue suficiente, ya que enfrenta un reporte de conducta desordenada, obstrucción de justicia y negativa a obedecer una orden legal.

Rubio fue puesta en libertad al decir que tenía un hijo de seis meses a quien tenía que amamantar, por lo que no pasó la noche tras las rejas.

Ella tendrá que acudir a la corte en las próximas semanas para abordar esta situación.

The 28 year-old actress told Televisa Espectaculos that “this is something that always happens.”

She said her relationship with Ponce is strictly professional, and that while they get along really well, there is no romance between them.

“Thank God I have always worked with people that come and do their job and that are professionals like Carlos. We get along really well, but we each have our lives.”

Also interviewed to get his side of the story, Ponce said he admires her professionally, but that’s it.

“I like her, I love her very much, I think she is an excellent actress, a professional and a great human being,” he said.

Their soap opera was launched in Mexico on June 27.
