EL MIRADOR DE LA HISTORIA DE LA TIERRA

Las Villuercas son montes que han permanecido en la mente de historiadores, geógrafos y peregrinos que los describen en su paso hacia Guadalupe y su magnífico monasterio, hoy día, patrimonio de la Humanidad. Más calladamente han sido cuidados como un tesoro geológico que comienza a disfrutarse desde La Villuerca, un balcón de 1600 metros de altitud que nos permite asomarnos al afamado relieve del Geoparque Mundial UNESCO Villuercas-Ibores-Jara.

Este mirador apalachense nos despeja un horizonte de casi 600 millones de años de la formación de la Tierra y nos envía a explorar un territorio protagonista de los primeros pasos de la evolución de la vida animal. Una exploración a realizar de la mano de las empresas y de los servicios turísticos que encontrará en estas páginas y que le permitirán dejarse arrastrar por las historias que pueda contarle este paraje de belleza tan indiscutible.

Los geoparques, obvio es decirlo, conservan un patrimonio geológico singular y tratan de hacerlo próximo a las personas. Les permiten vivir una nueva experiencia de turismo en la naturaleza acercándose a la geología como nunca antes lo habían hecho y disfrutarla con imágenes y expresiones que nunca antes habían utilizado. Los geoparques, poco más de un centenar en todo el mundo, están reconocidos por la Red Mundial de Geoparques de la UNESCO y comparten trabajos de conservación del patrimonio, educativos y de promoción del turismo sostenible.

En Villuercas-Ibores-Jara puede disfrutar de geositios tan diversos como la mina Costanaza, el estrecho de la Peña Amarilla, el desfiladero del Ruecas, la cueva de Castañar de Ibor, el berrocal de Peraleda, las apreturas del Almonte y así hasta más de cuarenta lugares de importancia geológica. Cambie el concepto de valle por el de sinclinal o anticlinal y discurra la interminable sucesión de sierras que van abriéndole las puertas del Guadarranque-Gualija, del Ibor-Guadalupe, del Viejas-Torneros, del Almonte, de Santa Lucía-Río Ruecas... Lugares, igualmente, de importancia paleontológica, testigo de los primeros fósiles animales. Comprenda el significado de tantos tipos de rocas y formaciones y observe como dan cobijo a robledales, castañares y loreras y éstos a una fauna diversa, apreciada y protegida.

THE EARTH’S LOOKOUT ONTO HISTORY

Las Villuercas are mountains that became etched in the minds of the historians, geographers and pilgrims who described them on their way to Guadalupe and to its magnificent monastery, today a World Heritage Site. These mountains have silently been cared for as if they were a geological treasure. They can first be seen from the 1,600-metre-high lookout at La Villuerca from which a spectacular view of the famous landscape of the UNESCO World Geological Site Geopark can be enjoyed.

The Appalachian-like view from this lookout gives us a feel for the nearly 600 million years that it took to form the Earth, inviting us to explore the land that was witness to the first stages of the evolution of animal life. An adventure to be enjoyed hand in hand with the companies and tourist services that are offered in these pages and that will allow you to be enchanted by the stories that this place of incomparable beauty will tell.

Geoparks, needless to say, are places that conserve a unique geological heritage and whose aim is to capture the interest of the public. They allow people to enjoy a different touristic experience of nature by approaching geology from a new angle, and sharing it via images and expressions that have never been used before. Geoparks – of which there are just over one hundred worldwide – are recognised by UNESCO’s Global Geoparks Network and share both this geological heritage conservation and educational work as well as the promotion of sustainable tourism.

In Villuercas-Ibores-Jara, visitors can enjoy diverse geosites such as the Costanaza Mine, the Peña Amarilla defile, the Ruecas ravine, the Castañar de Ibor cave, the Peraleda rocky outcrop, the Apreturas del Almonte, and almost forty other important geological sites. Go from the shape of the valleys to the synclines and anticlines of the endless flow of hills and to Guadarranque-Gualija, Ibor-Guadalupe, Viejas-Torneros, Almonte, Santa Lucía-Rio Ruecas, etc. Places which are also important from a palaeontological standpoint, and which are home to the first animal fossils. Understand the significance of the many types of rocks and formations and observe the way they are home to oak, chestnut and Portugal laurel woods, and how these in turn are home to diverse, revered and protected fauna.

El Geoparque está situado en la provincia de Cáceres (Extremadura), así que su principal vía de acceso es la Autovía A-5 en sus salidas 178 en dirección a Guadalupe, la 219 en dirección Deleitosa, la 240 en dirección a Aldeacentenera y la 253 en Trujillo en dirección a Guadalupe. También, viniendo desde Madrid se puede entrar a la altura de Oropesa hacia Puente del Arzobispo y Villar del Pedroso. Ésta última es la entrada a la Jara y a la parte norte del Sinclinal del Guadarranque.

Entrando desde el norte, por los Ibores o por Deleitosa, lo mejor es llegar hasta Castañar de Ibor para visitar el Centro de interpretación de la Cueva del Castañar. La cueva tiene una lista de espera para visitarla pero el centro es magnífico para comprender lo que la cueva esconde y como centro de información del Geoparque. Pero también puede seguir visitando los Ibores en dirección a Guadalupe y subir a La Villuerca. no cabe duda de que Guadalupe es guinda suficiente para todo un día ya sea visitando el Monasterio, haciendo una visita guiada o autoguiada por sus calles o saboreando ricas morcillas y dulces artesanales de la localidad.

Guadalupe es también un buen punto de salida para otra jornada en el Geoparque dirigiéndonos esta vez hacia Alía y la Calera o hacia el valle del Guadarranque. parada obligatoria en el estrecho de la Peña Amarilla, impresionante farallón cuarcítico con abrigo rupestre incluido, excelente para el avistamiento de aves y como entrada al Guadarranque.

Si entra en el Geoparque desde Trujillo o piensa salir, toda la parte occidental es igualmente una maravilla. Empezando por Logrosán recomendaremos visitar su museo y la mina Costanaza. Es un conjunto en el que se explica la geología y la minería de las Villuercas. Cañamero será la siguiente etapa. Aquí se encuentra el Centro de Recepción de Visitantes en el centro del pueblo y desde aquí podrá encaminarse hacia distintas rutas para visitar los abrigos rupestres del Ruecas. Hágase acompañar y descubrirá además que significaron los trilobites en la historia geológica de las Villuercas. Antes de partir no se olvide de pasar por Berzocana y descubrir su iglesia o las paredes cuarcíticas de Las Sábanas y el Lloraero. Y ponga el punto final acercándose al castillo de Cabañas o al pliegue en rodilla de las Apreturas del Almonte. Su cámara de fotos no descansará.

The Geopark is in Extremadura, in the region of Cáceres and the best way to get there is via the A-5, taking exit 178 in the direction of Guadalupe, exit 219 in the direction of Deleitosa, exit 240 in the direction of Aldeacentenera, or exit 253 in Trujillo towards Guadalupe. From Madrid, you can also come via Oropesa in the direction of Puente del Arzobispo and Villar del Pedroso. The latter will take you to Jara and the northern part of the Guadarranque syncline.

Coming from the north, from Ibores or Deleitosa, the best thing to do is to go to Castañar de Ibor and visit the Cueva del Castañar Visitor Centre. There is a waiting list to visit the cave, but the centre is a great place to discover the hidden secrets of the cave and also serves as an information centre for the Geopark. You can also visit Ibores via Guadalupe and ascend La Villuerca. Guadalupe itself deserves an entire day’s outing: Visit the monastery and take a self-guided walk through the town’s streets where you can try delicious, local artisanal morcillas (sausages) and typical pastries. Guadalupe is also a good starting point for a day at the Geopark, this time going in the direction of Alia and Calera or towards the valley of Guadarranque. An obligatory stop is the Peña Amarilla defile. An impressive quartzite outcrop with a rock shelter, it is an excellent place for bird watching and is the source of the Guadarranque River. Consult the companies found in this catalogue to enjoy the area better and to get the most out of it.

If you enter the Geopark from Trujillo or leave from there, you will be able to see the equally beautiful eastern part of the area. Starting in Logrosán, we recommend you visit its museum as well as the Costanaza Mine as these two places will give you a great understanding of the geology and mining activities of Villuercas.

Cañamero should be the next place to visit. The Visitor Reception Centre is in the centre of town and from there you can head off on different routes to visit the Ruecas cave shelters. Get someone to accompany you and you will also discover the importance of trilobites in the geological history of Villuercas. Before leaving, do not forget to stop at Berzocana and visit its church, and the quartzite walls of Las Sábanas and El Lloraero. Bring your trip to a close with a visit to the castle of Cabañas or to the rock folds of the Apreturas del Almonte. Don’t forget to take lots of photos!

Visitas a granjas y huertos ecológicos en el corazón del Geoparque. Conocer las labores de cría del cerdo ibérico, de las ovejas merinas o de las cabras serranas. Conocer las dehesas que circundan este territorio y los cultivos de castaños, olivos y robles. Introducirse en las fincas que producen la miel de Villuercas-Ibores, el vino de Ribera de Guadiana y el queso de los Ibores.

Visit organic farms and growers right in the heart of the Geopark. Get to know how the Iberian pig, merino sheep and mountain goats are raised. Get to know the meadows that surround this area and find out how trees such as chestnuts, olives and oaks are cared for. Visit the farms that produce the famous Villuercas-Ibores honey, Ribera del Guadiana wine, and Ibores cheese.

En el Geoparque las bodegas se concentran sobre todo en Cañamero y en el territorio de Alía. Con visitas turísticas la siguiente:Bodegas Ruiz Torres Organiza visitas turísticas a sus instalaciones de una hora aproximada de duración. De esta manera, se da a conocer los procesos empleados en la elaboración y crianza de los vinos, los pasos a seguir. De esta forma, se muestran diferentes salas de la bodega: Salas de acumulación y depósitos; Sala de producción y embotellado; Sala de barricas y crianza; Sala de catas y degustación; Tienda de Regalos y productos típicos de Extremadura.La visita finaliza con la entrega de un obsequio-recuerdo de la bodega.

In the Geopark the wineries are concentrated mainly in Cañamero and in the territory of Alía. With tourist visits the following:Bodegas Ruiz TorresIt organises guided tours of its facilities lasting approximately one hour. The tours are a way to understand the processes involved in making and ageing the wines as well as the steps that are followed. Thus, different rooms in the winery are shown: Accumulation and vat rooms; Production and bottling room; Barrel and ageing room; Tasting and sampling room.At the end of the tour, visitors receive a winery souvenir gift.

El Geoturismo le permitirá acercarse a la naturaleza de una manera distinta, aprendiendo en cada paso, un poco más acerca de la historia de la Tierra. Transitará por paisajes de indudable belleza mientras realiza un viaje en el tiempo de casi 600 millones de años, observando la formación de las montañas, de los valles, de las rocas, los minerales, las cuevas y todos los fenómenos que le acompañan. Vivirá experiencias guiadas a estratos que se pliegan incomprensiblemente, descubrirá las huellas de los trilobites y de otros animales que poblaron este entorno hace 500 millones de años, bajará a las minas comprendiendo cuáles son las razones para que se forme un filón o admirará las sorprendentes formaciones que, gota a gota, se construyen en el interior de una cueva.

El Geoturismo es para todos los públicos; Acerca la geología a todo el mundo y todas las edades. Geotourism allows you to get close to Nature in a different way, learning a little more about the history of the Earth with every step you take. It transports you to landscapes of unquestionable beauty while taking a trip back in time to almost 600 million years ago, seeing how mountains, valleys, rocks, minerals, caves and all phenomena that go with them were formed. Guides will explain how the layers of rock were folded in an almost incomprehensible way. Follow in the steps of trilobites and other animals that populated this area 500 million years ago. PATRIMONIO NATURALNATURAL HERITAGE

Uno de los atractivos del Geoparque Villuercas-Ibores-Jara es su extraordinario patrimonio natural ilustrado por las siete Zonas de Especial protección de Aves y los ocho lugares de importancia comunitaria reconocidos en la Directiva de Hábitats de la Unión Europea. Esta riqueza natural y de biodiversidad silvestre ha propiciado la visita de un creciente número de turistas ornitológicos en los últimos años. Estos visitantes se sienten atraídos por especies emblemáticas como las grullas y las abundantes aves vinculadas a los elevados afloramientos de cuarcita de las sierras: el buitre leonado y negro, el alimoche, la cigüeña negra, el búho real o el águila real. Existen diferentes posibilidades de rutas para todos los gustos, edades, preferencias, etc.

One of the attractions of the Villuercas-Ibores- Jara Geopark is the wealth of its extraordinary natural heritage. An example of this are the seven Special Protected Areas for Birds and the eight places of EU importance recognised in the European Union’s Habitats Directive. This rich, natural and wild biodiversity has led to visits by a growing number of ornithological tourists in recent years. These visitors are drawn to iconic species such as cranes and the many birds that live in the high, mountainous quartzite outcrops: black and griffon vultures, Egyptian vultures, black storks, eagle owls and golden eagles. There are different possibilities for routes for all tastes, ages, preferences, etc.

Para reponer fuerzas nada mejor que disfrutar con sabrosos platos elaborados con productos característicos de las Villuercas-Ibores-Jara, derivados del cerdo, la cabra y la caza: cabrito a la brasa, caldereta extremeña, perdices, venados o las famosas morcillas de sangre de Guadalupe, dulces o picantes. El pan artesanal de Guadalupe también es muy apreciado, cocido en horno de leña, realizándose igual que antaño. La deliciosa y conocida repostería artesanal ofrece roscas de yema, de muédago, o bollos, todos artesanales.

La miel Villuercas-Ibores, el queso Ibores y vino Ribera del Guadiana son tres Denominaciones de Origen protegidas representativas de la zona. Otro producto estrella son las castañas procedentes de los frondosos castañares de las Villuercas y que han dado lugar a una gastronomía característica y típica de la comarca: sopas de castañas, cremas, salsas, postres...

For recharging your batteries there is nothing better than enjoying the region’s delicious cuisene. Enjoy dishes made with typical produce from Villuercas-Ibores-Jara such as pork, goat and game: grilled kid, Extremaduran caldereta or stew, quail, venison, and the famous – sweet or piquant – blood sausage from Guadalupe. The artisanal bread made in Guadalupe is also famous. Baked in a wood oven, it is prepared as it has been for centuries. Delicious, artisanal pastries include roscas de yema y de muérdago (egg yolk and “mistletoe” rings) and sweet buns.

Emblematic products such as honey from Villuercas-Ibores, cheese from Ibores, and wine from Ribera del Guadiana are protected by Protected Designation of Origin. Another star product is the chestnut. Gathered in the leafy chestnut woods of Villuercas, they have given rise to a characteristic and typical cuisine of the province: chestnut soups, veloutés, sauces, desserts, etc.

DENOMINACIONES DE ORIGEN E INDICACIONES GEOGRÁFICAS PROTEGIDAS

DENOMINATIONS OF ORIGINAND PROTECTED GEOGRAPHICAL INDICATIONS

Hasta cuatro Denominaciones de Origen y dos Indicaciones Geográficas Protegidas tiene esta zona: una de las principales es la Miel Villuercas-Ibores D.O.P. presente en la elaboración de numerosos platos y repostería, ofrece una miel de características únicas gracias a la rica y variada flora que nace en estas comarcas. Se elaboran dos tipos atendiendo a su composición: Miel Multiflora, obtenida de brezos blanco y común, castaños, encinas, alcornoques, robles, retamas, zarzamoras, escobas, cantuesos, romeros, etc; Miel de Mielada o Miel de bosque, de color más oscuro y con reflejos rojizos, obtenida por la libación de castaños, encinas, alcornoques y robles.

Otra D.O.P. la obtiene el vino Ribera del Guadiana. En la provincia de Cáceres ampara las zonas de Miajadas-Trujillo, Montánchez-Tamuja y la zona de Cañamero (municipios de Alía, Berzocana, Cañamero y Guadalupe). Las viñas se cultivan en bancadas y no son muy extensas. Esta D.O.P. ampara tres tipos de vinos: Joven, Crianza y Reserva, en las variedades de blanco, rosado y tinto.

El Queso Ibores D.O.P., se elabora con leche procedente de cabras Serranas, Veratas o Retintas. Se trata de un queso graso, de corteza semidura, de color marfil, pimentonado o en aceite. Las mayores concentraciones de ganado caprino en la provincia de Cáceres se localizan en Ibores, Villuercas, La Jara y Trujillo. La D.O.P. ampara los quesos elaborados en las comarcas de Villuercas-Ibores-Jara y Miajadas-Trujillo (centralizado en el área de Trujillo).

La D.O.P “Jamón Dehesa de Extremadura”, que también se produce en Montánchez-Tamuja (Sierra de Montánchez) y en Sierra de San Pedro y “Ternera de Extremadura” y “Cordero de Extremadura” I.G.P. son otros productos de calidad presentes en la comarca.

This region has four Protected Designations of Origin and two Protected Geographical Indications. One of the most important is the P.D.O. Villuercas- Ibores honey that is used in many dishes and pastries. The characteristics of this honey are unique thanks to the rich and varied flora found in this region. The Designation of Origin covers two types of honey that are differentiated by their floral composition: Wildflower honey is obtained from white and common heather, chestnut flowers, scrubby oak, oak, broom, blackberries, Scotch broom, lavender, rosemary, heather, hazel, etc; Honeydew honey, also called forest honey, is darker than wildflower honey, has a reddish tinge and is produced by insects drinking from chestnut, scrubby oak, cork and oak trees.

Another P.D.O. is that of Ribera del Guadiana wine. The province of Cáceres includes the areas of Miajadas-Trujillo, Montánchez-Tamuja and the area of Cañamero (home to the municipalities of Alia, Berzocana, Cañamero and Guadalupe). The vines are grown on small terraced areas. P.D.O. Ribera del Guadiana produces three kinds of wine: Joven, Crianza and Reserva, and are either white, red and rosé.

P.D.O. Ibores cheese is made from Serrana, Verata or Retinta goats’ milk. It is a buttery, ivory- coloured cheese, with a semi-hard rind that has been rubbed with paprika or oil. Most of the goats in the region of Caceres are found in Ibores, Villuercas, La Jara and Trujillo. P.D.O. This covers cheeses produced in the provinces of Villuercas- Ibores-Jara and Miajadas-Trujillo (centred in the area of Trujillo).

P.D.O. Dehesa de Extremadura ham, which is also produced in Montánchez-Tamuja (in the Sierra de Montánchez) and in the Sierra de San Pedro, and P.G.I. beef, and lamb from Extremadura are other quality products of the province.

Cherries and chestnuts are also other typical products from this area.

El legado cultural de este territorio es amplio y valioso. Numerosos los lugares que pueden ser visitados: el más destacado, el Real Monasterio de Santa María de Guadalupe, declarado patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO, pero a su lado hay que destacar la arquitectura tradicional y mudéjar, los castillos, las iglesias de Berzocana y de Alía, las ruinas arqueológicas de San Cristóbal o las fiestas tradicionales de los pueblos como el Carnaval de Ánimas en Villar del Pedroso, por citar una de las más antiguas y arraigadas, sin olvidar la Fiesta de Interes turístico regional la Hispanidad del 12 de octubre en Guadalupe.

Pero el patrimonio cultural está integrado también por las manifestaciones artesanales. El Centro de Artesanía de Guadalupe, pone de manifiesto que esta localidad es uno de los principales centros artesanos en el geoparque y por extensión en la comarca y en Extremadura. Caminar por las calles de La puebla permite disfrutar de numerosas muestras de artesanía: calderería, cestería de castaño y mimbre, alfarería, orfebrería, cobre, latón y bordados e hilados, oficios artesanales que aún perviven en la localidad.

El Geoparque ha sido durante siglos, destino de personajes ilustres entre los que cabe destacar la figura de la Reina Isabel la Católica, que consideraba al entorno de Guadalupe “su paraíso” personal.

The cultural legacy of this territory is vast and valuable. La popularidad de Guadalupe se extendió con rapidez y pronto se convirtió en el centro devocional de todo el sur peninsular. Llegaron poco después los monjes Jerónimos, que custodiaron el Santuario desde 1389 hasta 1835, pasando varias décadas sin la protección de orden religiosa alguna, hasta que en 1908 aceptan hacerse cargo del Monasterio los Franciscanos. Con Jerónimos y Franciscanos se vive una larga etapa de esplendor que ha llegado hasta nuestros días. El 12 de octubre de 1928 la Virgen de Guadalupe fue coronada canónicamente Reina de las Españas y en 1907, fue nombrada Patrona de Extremadura.

La fachada principal del Monasterio es mudéjar, igual que uno de sus dos claustros, Su templete es una de las joyas del monasterio, realizado por Fray Juan de Sevilla con barro cocido y ladrillo aplantillado, decorado con azulejos y yeserías, el segundo claustro es gótico del XVI. Guarda importantes libros miniados, bordados, relicarios, obras pictóricas del artista extremeño Zurbarán, de El Greco y otros pintores, esculturas, orfebrería, bronces, etc., transformándose en un auténtico guardajoyas que encierra en sí varios Museos: el de Bordados, el de Libros Miniados y el de Pintura y Escultura. El Templo es gótico, del siglo XV; el coro y la sillería son obras de Manuel de Larra Churriguera, de mediados del siglo XVIII; la reja del presbiterio, gótico-renacentista y el Retablo Mayor, clasicista.

The popularity of Santa María de Guadalupe spread rapidly and the place soon became the devotional centre of the south of Spain. El hide es una construcción de madera de 1,20 x1,20x 1,50 m (altura). Están disponibles 2 hides, situados en una dehesa muy tranquilla. Traemos los clientes al hide. Desde el hide pueden fotografiar muchas especies de aves desde muy cerca. Por ejemplo Buitres, Rapaces, Cuervos, Rabilargos, Cogujadas, Trigueros etc. A la hora convenida recogida de clientes. También es posible utilizar nuestros hides móviles para aquellos clientes que quieran fotografiar especies específicas, por ejemplo Abejarucos o Martin Pescadores.
