A lo largo de la historia, Jerez ha sido

un enclave fuertemente influenciado

por las distintas culturas que se han

asentado en sus tierras, numerosos

restos así lo atestiguan tanto en la

propia ciudad como en su entorno.

Vestigios de la Xera fenicia, la fuerte-

mente romanizada Ceret, la impor-

tante Sherish musulmana y las poste-

riores bellísimas construcciones cris-

tianas, ofrecen un amplio abanico de

estilos arquitectónicos y edificios sin-

gulares, que hacen de Jerez una pre-

ciosa ciudad con una fisonomía urba-

na realmente peculiar.

Pocos lugares en España gozan de un

reconocimiento internacional tan am-

plio como el que Jerez disfruta. Gra-

cias a su vino, el Jerez o Sherry , el

nombre de nuestra ciudad ha traspa-

Each of the many different cultures that

have settled here over the past few cen-

turies have had an enormous influence

upon the physical appearance of Jerez

and numerous archaeological remains

which bear witness to the fact can still

be found in the surrounding countryside

and within the city itself.

Archaeological remains from the Phoe-

nician Xera, the strongly Roman Ceret,

and the important Muslim Sherish,mer-

ge with the beauty of the later Christian

buildings to offer a wide range of archi-

tectural styles and distinctive edifices

which all combine to give Jerez a truly

joy the international renown of Jerez gi-

ven that, thanks to its sherry wines, the

name of the city crossed international

borders many years ago and has since

gone on to become truly universal.

Jerez se encuentra situada en una

fértil zona de campiña formada por

la vega del Guadalquivir, junto al río

Guadalete, a pocos minutos de las

playas atlánticas y la sierra gaditana.

Su excelente situación geográfica, a

caballo entre sierra y mar, hace posi-

ble disfrutar de unas agradables tem-

peraturas,con más de 3.200 horas de

sol al año.

La bonanza de las temperaturas, de-

bido a su latitud y maravillosa situa-

ción geografica,a escasos minutos de

la costa atlantica y la sierra gaditana,

11º C de media en invierno y 25º C

en verano, permiten disfrutar du-

rante todo el año de un clima ideal,

que se caracteriza por suaves invier-

nos y agradables veranos.

Nestling in the south-western corner of

Andalucía, in the north-west of the pro-

vince of Cadiz, Jerez can be seen to en-

joy a truly privileged geographical loca-

tion: lying in a fertile area formed by the

plain of the Guadalquivir, on the banks

of the river Guadalete and just a short

drive from both the Atlantic beaches and

the Gaditana mountain range.

Desde la más remota antigüedad, el

caballo ha sido, junto al vino y el fla-

menco,uno de los elementos más re-

presentativos y emblemáticos de Je-

rez, alcanzando su punto álgido en el

siglo XV,cuando los monjes de la Car-

tuja culminaron un largo proceso de

selección equina, dando lugar a los

famosísimos caballos cartujanos.

En la actualidad, espectáculos ecues-

tres regulares como los que ofrece

la Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte

Ecuestre y la Yeguada de la Cartuja -

Hierro del Bocado, y la celebración

de la Feria del Caballo y otras mani-

festaciones hípicas durante las

Fiestas de Otoño,permiten disfrutar

de la belleza de este noble animal.

Since ancient times, alongside Sherry

and Flamenco,the horse has been one

of the strongest symbols of Jerez. A

period of great importance in this

long tradition was in the 15th century

when the Carthusian monks brought

the world famous Carthusian horse

to Jerez.

Today there are a staggering number

of equestrian events in which this no-

ble creature can be seen. The Royal

Andalusian School of Equestrian Art

and the Yeguada La Cartuja - Hierro

del Bocado, have weekly shows.The-

re is also the annual Horse Fair and

many equestrian events forming part

of the Autumn Festival.

Jerez's exceptional geographical loca-

pe, and the careful ageing of the grape

must, all combine to give the world the

pleasure of this unique product known

the world over as sherry. Lovingly aged

in wine cellars often linked to cathedrals

due to their spacious silence.The pro-

duction of these wines is protected by

the “Official Regulating Body for the Au-

thenticity of Jerez - Xeres - Sherry” as

is the production of Brandy by the “Re-

gulating Body for Brandies of Jerez”.Both

products use the traditional ageing pro-

cess known as Solera and Criadera.Je-

rez's wine cellars are large spacious buil-

dings with high - tiled roofs.They are de-

signed in such a way to keep a constant

temperature and humidity in semidark-

ness, conditions essential for the pro-

Jerez is considered the “Birthplace of

Flamenco”.This city has been, since the

turn of the last century, the city which

has produced the most, and best, sin-

gers, dancers and guitarists in the who-

le history of Flamenco. The most im-

portant churches in Jerez,built after the

Christian conquest of the city, have lent

their names to its most traditional quar-

ters: Santiago and San Miguel, where

the roots of the Buleria are to be found.

In the very heart of the Santiago quar-

ter,located in the Pemartin Palace,stands

lo largo del tiempo, la Xera fenicia, el

Ceret fuertemente romanizado o la

poderosa Sherisch musulmana, has-

ta la reconquista de Jerez en 1.264

por Alfonso X El Sabio, y su cristia-

nización, han aportado a Jerez nu-

merosos vestigios que enriquecen un

patrimonio artístico de primer or-

den.

Su centro antiguo, declarado como

"Centro Histórico-Artístico", nos

ofrece barrios con auténtica solera,

de recónditas calles, plazas y rinco-

nes,donde fuentes y naranjos se pier-

den entre palacios, iglesias y bode-

gas.

Throughout its long history Jerez has

been strongly influenced by the different

cultures that have settled in its lands,

each leaving its mark upon the already

deep-rooted traditions of the city.These

legacies now form an essential part of

life in the city.

The cultures of Phoenician Xera, the

strongly Roman Ceret, the important

Muslim Sherish all made their presen-

ce felt up until Alfonso X,The Wise,

took Jerez back from the Moors in 1264

and was responsible for the conversion

of the city to Christianity. This melting

pot of cultures and knowledge has hel-

ped to enhance the artistic heritage of

the city.

The old centre, declared to be of Histo-

rical Artistic interest, is full of traditio-

nal, quaint streets and squares where

you can discover secluded, hidden cor-

ners mixed in amongst fountains, oran-

ge trees, palaces, churches and sherry

bodegas.

Jerez ofrece un amplio abanico de po-
