BIENVENIDA DEL RECTOR
Bienvenidos y bienvenidas a Valencia, una ciudad cosmopolita resultado de un cruce de cul-turas forjado a lo largo de los siglos.
Desde 1499, la Universitat de València ha desarrollado su actividad de docencia e investiga-ción, contribuyendo al desarrollo de la ciudad, formando parte de su trama urbana, en la que se insertan los tres campus universitarios (Tarongers, Blasco Ibáñez y Burjassot-Paterna) en los que la Universitat imparte formación y genera investigación en todas las áreas de conoci-miento y a los que se suma nuestro edificio histórico, “La Nau”, ubicado en el centro de Valen-cia, al igual que el bicentenario Jardín Botánico de la Universitat y el Colegio Mayor Rector Peset, un ejemplo de recuperación del patrimonio arquitectónico valenciano: construido en el barrio del Carmen a partir de un antiguo palacio.
Ciencias básicas y experimentales, ingenierías, ciencias de la salud, ciencias de la educación, humanidades y ciencias sociales económicas y jurídicas se combinan en la experiencia acadé-mica que es la Universitat.
Quiero darte la bienvenida a la Universitat de València y agradecerte que te hayas unido a los miles de estudiantes internacionales que hacen de la Universitat de València la segunda universidad de Europa en recepción de estudian-tes Erasmus y un referente internacional.
Con la mayor oferta de estudios de grado, máster y docto-rado de la Comunidad Valenciana y una de las mayores de España, y con unos resultados destacados de liderazgo en producción científica y actividad investigadora, la Univer-sitat ha obtenido un doble reconocimiento como Campus de Excelencia Internacional por parte del Ministerio de Educación del Gobierno de España.
Ahora ya formas parte de la Universitat de València, una moderna universidad, dinámica, que desarrolla un impor-
tante volumen de actividad cultural y de difusión científi-ca pero que también es una comunidad de valores compar-tidos y de compromiso con nuestra sociedad.

A principios del siglo XV, los Jurados de la ciudad de Valencia reunieron los estudios dependientes de la ciudad y de la iglesia para fundar, el 30 de abril de 1499, la Uni-versitat de València, con unas Constitucio-nes propias redactadas a instancia del Con-sejo de la ciudad de Valencia.
El Papa Alejandro VI firmó, en 1501, la bula pontificia que, junto con el privilegio real de Fernando I, sellado en 1502, llevaron a la inauguración oficial del Estudio General de Valencia, equiparado en prerrogativas y distinciones a las universidades de Roma,

Bolonia, Salamanca y Lleida, el 13 de octu-bre de 1502.
A los estudios iniciales de medicina, hu-manidades, teología y leyes se fueron su-mando, con el tiempo, nuevas titulaciones e instalaciones hasta configurar nuestra uni-versidad actual: una universidad moderna, europea, abierta prácticamente a todas las ramas del saber en humanidades, ciencias básicas y técnicas, ciencias de la salud y de la educación así como en ciencias sociales, jurídicas y económicas.
A estos estudios se suma una importante apuesta por la investigación y la transmi-sión de los resultados de la investigación y los conocimientos científicos, el compromi-so con el desarrollo de nuestra sociedad y el fomento de la cultura y el deporte.

La Universitat de València se estructura es-pacialmente en tres campus urbanos que se especializan por campos del conocimien-to: Blasco Ibáñez 186.015 m2; Tarongers 119.670 m2; y Burjassot-Paterna 142.135m2.
Campus Blasco IbáñezDonde se encuentran las Facultades de Me-dicina y Odontología, Psicología, Geografía e Historia, Filosofía y Ciencias de la Edu-cación, Filología, Traducción y Comuni-cación, Ciencias de la Actividad Física y el Deporte, Enfermería y Fisioterapia, además
de Rectorado y de los Servicios Centrales de la Universitat de València.
Campus TarongersDonde se ubican las Facultades de Econo-mía, Derecho, Ciencias Sociales y Magiste-rio.
Campus Burjassot-PaternaDonde se localizan las Facultades de Cien-cias Biológicas, Física, Química, Ciencias Matemáticas y Farmacia y la Escuela Técni-

Además de estos campus, la Universitat dispone de otros edificios en la ciudad de Valencia como la sede histórica de la Universitat, conocida como La Nau, ya que se encuentra junto a la calle que se llama así, y que actualmente es un centro cultural, el Jardín Botá-nico, situado en el centro de Valencia, en la calle Quart, n° 80, y el Palau de Cerveró que alberga el Servicio de Relaciones Internacio-nales y el Museo de Historia de la Ciencia, en pleno centro histórico de Valencia.Junto a estas instalaciones, la Universitat de València desarrolla su actividad en las ciudades valencianas de Ontinyent, a través de una Extensión Universitaria, y de Gandía, mediante el Centro Interna-cional de Gandía.

HISTORIA
La ciudad de València
La ciudad de Valencia fue fundada en el año 138 a.C. siendo Cónsul de Roma Dé-cimo Junio Bruto Galaico. Desde entonces, nuestra ciudad ha sido un cruce de culturas. Fue una capital musulmana durante cinco siglos, desde el año 711 hasta la conquista por parte del Rey Jaume I, que creó el anti-guo Reino de Valencia.
Fue un importante puerto comercial en el siglo XV, una gran ciudad manufacturera de seda y de otras industrias, como la azu-lejera, en el siglo XVIII, gran exportadora en los siglos XIX y XX, y destino turístico a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado.
Como consecuencia de su constante evolu-ción y dinamismo, de su intensa vida cul-
tural y de su mezcla de culturas, a lo largo de la ciudad se puede ver la evolución de la misma. Se puede contemplar una Valencia romana, árabe, gótica, renacentista, barro-ca, modernista y racionalista, junto a una Valencia en continuo crecimiento y expan-sión, acogedora e integradora, que reúne las más novedosas tendencias mundiales.

Valencia es la capital de la Comunidad Va-lenciana.
Hoy en día, Valencia es la tercera ciudad de España, tanto en importancia como en población (800.000 habitantes). Esta cifra se duplica si se considera su área metropolita-na, lo que significa que la ciudad de Valen-cia, por sí sola, supone el 16% de la pobla-ción de la Comunidad Valenciana.
La localización de la ciudad permite dis-frutar de uno de los climas más benignos de Europa: clima mediterráneo, suave, con
una temperatura media que oscila entre 11º y 26º. Su entorno natural, su atractivo cul-tural y sus playas de fina arena la han con-vertido en un centro turístico internacional.
La ciudad de Valencia es hoy, fundamental-mente, un área de servicios que se extiende más allá de los límites de su término munici-pal, centrada principalmente en actividades de demanda final, de comercio minorista y mayorista, de servicios especializados a em-presas y de actividades profesionales, que suponen el 74% del empleo local, a los que se une una base industrial importante en los
sectores de papel y artes gráficas, madera y mueble, productos metálicos, calzado, con-fección y fabricación de automóviles.
Valencia cuenta con importantes institucio-nes culturales y un rico patrimonio histó-rico-artístico como la Lonja -monumento declarado Patrimonio de la Humanidad-, las Torres de Serranos y de Quart, la Cate-dral y la Basílica de la Virgen de los Desam-parados, situados en la Plaza de la Virgen donde se encuentra también el Palacio de la Generalidad Valenciana, sede del Gobierno Regional.

A ellas se puede sumar la im-portante actividad empresarial desarrollada en Feria Valencia, en el Palacio de Congresos, y los grandes eventos deportivos internacionales.

LA CIUDADCÓMO LLEGAR
Situada en la costa este espa-ñola, la ciudad de Valencia se encuentra a orillas del mar Mediterráneo, a unos 350 km de distancia de las ciudades de Madrid y de Barcelona.
Valencia posee buenas comuni-caciones por avión, barco, tren y carretera.
A Valencia se puede lle-gar por avión a través de su aeropuerto de Manises situado a 8 kilómetros y con enlace de
metro a la ciudad de Valencia. Dispone de conexiones directas con las principales ciudades es-pañolas y otras como Londres, París, Lisboa, Ámsterdam, Bru-selas, Zúrich, Frankfurt, Milán, Roma, Bucarest, Sofía, Casa-blanca, Estambul o Kiev, entre otras.
Por barco, ya que cuenta con un importante puerto co-mercial y estación marítima.
Por tren, cuya estación cen-tral, de estilo modernista, se en-
cuentra en el corazón mismo de la ciudad y permite la conexión ferroviaria con toda España y el resto de Europa. Por otra par-te, el importante trayecto Ma-drid-Valencia se puede realizar con el AVE (Alta Velocidad Es-pañola), que llega a la Estación Valencia Joaquín Sorolla.
Por carretera, ya sea en au-tobús o en automóvil, a través de la conexión con la red Euro-pea de Autopistas del corredor mediterráneo E-15, y más en
concreto la autopista AP-7, que recorre el litoral de Levante, las Autovías A-23 Sagunto-Som-port y la A-3 Madrid-Valencia.

La ciudad de València
AREA DE BURJASSOT-PATERNA
En estos dos municipios se encuentra el Campus de Burjassot-Paterna de la Universitat de València.
Burjassot cuenta con cerca de 40.000 habitantes y sus orígenes se remontan a la época musulmana.
Paterna cuenta con más de 60.000 habitantes y en su municipio exis-ten diversos polígonos industriales, el Parque Tecnológico y el Parc Científic de la Universitat de València.
A solo 7 kilómetros, la convierten en un área bien conectada a través de las líneas 1 y 4 de MetroValencia y las líneas de autobuses de la Empresa Municipal de Transportes, EMT, y del Consorcio Munici-pal de Transportes, CMT.

Estudiantes de Programa Internacional y nacionalidad extracomunitaria: Para poder entrar y permanecer como estudiante en España, debes solicitar el visado de estudios en la Embajada o Consulado español en el país en el que residas.
Si tu estancia va a ser superior a 180 días, tu visado será de 90 días, y dentro del primer mes de entrada a España, deberás acudir al Servicio de Relaciones Internacionales (Pa-lau de Cerveró, Plaza de Cisneros, 4, 46003 Valencia) para que te pidamos cita con la Comisaría de Policía, con la que tramitarás tu TIE (Tarjeta de identificación de Extran-

LENGUA COSTE DE LA VIDA
En Valencia se habla tanto el castellano, o español, como el valen-ciano, la lengua propia de la Comunidad Valenciana que se com-parte con otros territorios de España, como Cataluña, y del sur de Francia, así como Andorra, donde es la única lengua oficial, y con Alghero, una ciudad italiana situada en la isla de Cerdeña.
Tanto el castellano como el valenciano están presentes en todos los ámbitos de la vida cotidiana. Ambas lenguas son vehículo de expre-sión normal en la Universitat de València, que pone a tu servicio di-versos medios gratuitos para que, si estás interesado, puedas apren-der valenciano. En el Servei de Política Lingüística puedes encontrar toda la información al respecto

Estos son algunos de los principales gastos de un estudiante en Valencia: • Gastos de luz, agua y gas (en términos medios, por persona, si
compartes piso): alrededor de 25 € mensuales.• Conexión a Internet: En la Universitat de València y sus Colegios
Mayores, es gratuita para los estudiantes, a través de la red wi-fi de la Universitat de València (eduroam). Si deseas contratar un servicio de Internet de banda ancha en una vivienda, el coste apro-ximado es de 40 € mensuales.
• Menú del día (dos platos, postre y bebida): alrededor de 6 € en las cafeterías de la Universitat de València, en términos medios.
• Gastos de manutención (compra de comida en supermercado y pequeños gastos) por persona: aproximadamente 200 €/ mes.

CARNET JOVEN
Las entidades bancarias, bancos y cajas de ahorro, están abiertas de lunes a viernes, de 9 a 14 horas, si bien algunas abren alguna tarde. La gran mayoría de oficinas dispone de cajero automático (24 horas).
Existe una gran diversidad de bancos y cajas de ahorro, y algunos de ellos disponen de oficinas ubicadas en los Campus de la Universitat de València. Para los estudiantes matriculados en la Universitat de València estas entidades ofrecen condiciones favorables, como es el caso de Santander:

Si tienes 30 años o menos, puedes obtener el “Carnet Jove” en el Instituto Valenciano de la Juventud (IVAJ). Tiene un precio aproximado de 9 euros.
Con este carnet podrás obtener descuentos en determinados cines, teatros, museos, tiendas, albergues, hoteles, restaurantes, etc. Además, también existe una versión de este carnet en forma de tarjeta bancaria que te permite usarla como medio de pago.

ALOJAMIENTO
Valencia es una ciudad con varias universidades donde viven algu-nos miles de estudiantes. Los estu-diantes deben buscar por su cuen-ta el alojamiento más adecuado para su estancia de estudios. Aun-que la UV no ofrece un servicio de gestión del alojamiento, sí dispone de unas opciones propias:
• Colegio Mayor de la Universitat de València
El Colegio Mayor Rector Peset es un centro de la Universitat de València que proporciona resi-dencia de forma prioritaria a los
miembros de la Universitat de València y fomenta la formación humana, cultural y científica de quienes residen en él. El Colegio Mayor Rector Peset está ubicado en una casa señorial del centro histórico de la ciudad que en 1997 fue rehabilitada y adaptada a su nueva función universitaria.

• Residencia Universitaria “Damià Bonet”
Esta residencia universitaria está situada en el Campus dels Taron-gers, en el noreste de la ciudad, y está bien comunicada con auto-buses y MetroValencia. Tiene es-tudios individuales con baño y co-cina, calefacción y aire acondicio-nado, teléfono y conexión para el ordenador con acceso a internet.

• Compartir casaLos estudiantes valencianos suelen compartir un aparta-mento entre varios. En España, los alquileres se realizan por mes completo y se paga al principio de cada mes. También se suele pedir una fianza por el alquiler del apar-tamento. Hay diversas agencias inmobiliarias y empresas de servicios a estudiantes que ofre-cen apartamentos en alquiler. El Servicio de Información y Di-namización de la Universitat de
València (SEDI) te proporciona información sobre pisos de al-quiler de propietarios privados.

• Hoteles y Youth Hostels Es normal que al llegar a Va-lencia te alojes en un hotel o en algún albergue de jóvenes (Youth Hostel) mientras buscas alojamiento.

Si eres ciudadano de la Unión Europea, antes de partir debes solicitar la tarjeta sanitaria de la Unión Europea. Si no eres ciu-dadano de la Unión Europea, antes de viajar a España deberás actualizar la información sobre asistencia sanitaria, documen-tando el motivo y las condicio-nes de la estancia, así como que dispones de medios adecuados de subsistencia.

Vivir en València
El Servicio de Relaciones Inter-nacionales de la UV exige a los estudiantes no ciudadanos de la Unión Europea, y que vienen a través de un Programa Interna-cional, que contraten un seguro médico internacional. Este segu-ro debe cubrir, como mínimo:
• Asistencia médica y sanitaria tanto por accidente como por enfermedad
• Repatriación o transporte sa-nitario de heridos o enfermos
• Repatriación o transporte en caso de defunción
• Desplazamiento de familiar en caso de enfermedad o de-función
• Responsabilidad civil
Deberás acreditar que has con-tratado el seguro aportando:• la póliza• el recibo de haber pagado la
cuota
Si has hecho una “extensión” de una póliza preexistente, pide un certificado que especifique la cobertura.
Si eres menor de 28 años, en la matrícula del curso académico se incluye un seguro escolar que cubre los accidentes producidos dentro de la Universidad. Para la atención primaria debes acu-dir a tu seguro médico.Por otra parte, los Gabinetes de Salud de la UV ofrecen un servicio de atención a los estu-diantes:
• Asistencia en la Enfermedad común, dentro del horario establecido. Además conviene
saber que hay países que tie-nen convenio con la Seguri-dad Social que les ofrece una prestación asistencial. Para saber a qué Centro de Salud debes acudir, puedes consul-tarlo llamando al teléfono de información de la Generalitat Valenciana: 012. Según el do-micilio donde vivas, te corres-ponderá un centro de salud u otro. En el Centro de Salud te asignarán un médico de cabe-cera para todas las consultas,

analíticas o pruebas especiales que necesites. Sería conve-niente que trajeras la tarjeta sanitaria europea cuando acu-das a los gabinetes.
• Asistencia de Urgencia y Pri-meros Auxilios.
• Asistencia en Accidente Es-colar.
• Promoción de la Salud (cam-pañas específicas)
• Formación e Información en materia de Salud.

MOVERSEEN VALENCIA
Por su buen clima y su orografía, Valencia es una ciudad perfecta para desplazarse a pie o en bici-cleta. Si usas la bicicleta, dispones de una amplia red de CarrilBici, pero recuerda que debes respetar las normas de circulación.
Además, Valencia posee una am-plia red de estaciones de Valenbisi. Se trata de bicicletas que puedes alquilar con una tarjeta de abono en una estación, usarlas 30 minu-tos y devolverlas en otra estación.

Las 55 líneas de autobús de EMT (de color rojo) te permiten llegar a todos los puntos de la ciudad. 5 líneas de metro conectan dis-tintos puntos de la ciudad y su área metropolitana y a través de las líneas 4 (estación Tarongers y estación Vicent Andrés Estellés), y 3 (estación Facultats) puedes llegar a los Campus de Taron-gers, Burjassot-Paterna y Blas-co Ibáñez, respectivamente en
aproximadamente media hora. También existe un servicio de autobús que comunica Valencia con diversos municipios próxi-mos a la ciudad. Estos autobuses (de color amarillo) se denomi-nan MetroBus.
Hay diversos tipos de bonos y abonos de transporte para auto-buses y metro, así como tarjetas combinadas que permiten uti-lizar diversos medios de trans-porte. Asimismo, el Metro de Va-lencia dispone de un sistema de tarjetas inteligentes (Mobilis) que
permiten recargarse en máquinas de venta automática y taquillas.

Valencia está considerada la ciudad de las flores y de la luz mediterránea. A lo largo de la

El buen clima y la forma de vida permiten disfrutar de numero-sas zonas de encuentro y diver-

Valencia es famosa por su gas-tronomía y, en especial, por uno de sus platos mundialmente más conocidos: la paella. Hay muchos tipos de paella diferen-tes, como también otros arroces valencianos que son típicos, como el “arroz al horno’, el “arroz negro” o el “arroz a ban-da”, y otras comidas internacio-nalmente conocidas, como la “fideuà”.
La gastronomía valenciana es tí-picamente mediterránea, basada en carnes, pescados, verduras,
legumbres, aceite de oliva y fru-tas. No puedes dejar de probar la dieta mediterránea, una forma sana, saludable y equilibrada de alimentarse.
Una de las tradiciones valencia-nas es cenar a base de “tapas”, en bares y tascas donde tendrás la oportunidad de conocer los vi-nos valencianos, cada vez mejor valorados por su calidad y por las variedades de uva emplea-das en su producción.

Estudiar en la Universitat de València es mucho más que ir a clase. La UV pone a tu alcance toda una serie de servicios e instalaciones para mejorar tu estancia en la universidad.
Para organizarte, debes tener en cuenta los horarios habituales de clases que encontrarás en la web de la Facultad o Escuela en la que curses estudios. Muchas titulaciones tienen horario de mañana o de tarde, y otras de día entero algunos días de la semana. Por la mañana suelen empezar a las 8 o 8:30 horas. Por la tarde, las clases suelen empezar a las 15 o 15:30 horas y suelen finalizar antes de las 21:30 horas.

Vivir La Universitat
La Universitat de València organiza múlti-ples actividades: exposiciones, conciertos, seminarios, conferencias y otros. y también genera una importante actividad cultural a través de sus aulas de:

La Universitat de València de-sarrolla una amplia actividad deportiva a través de sus Cam-pus de Deportes, ubicados en el Campus de Blasco Ibáñez y Tarongers.
En el Campus de Burjassot-Pa-terna, además de las instalacio-nes deportivas existentes en el Campus, existe un convenio con el Ayuntamiento de Burjas-sot para la utilización de las ins-talaciones deportivas munici-pales, situadas junto al Campus.
Entre los principales depor-tes que se pueden practicar se encuentran el fútbol, fútbol sala, baloncesto, balonmano, voleibol, rugby, judo, kárate, taekwondo, kendo, tenis, tenis de mesa, bádminton, esgrima, squash, pádel, frontenis, atletis-mo y triatlón, entre otros.
Además se programan activida-des deportivas y recreativas tales como aeróbic, baile contemporá-neo, jazz, baile español, sevilla-nas, yoga, artes marciales, y otras.
La Universitat de València dispone de equipos universi-tarios, tanto femeninos como masculinos, que participan en diversas ligas y competiciones universitarias en donde se han alcanzado premios y reconoci-mientos.

La Universitat de València dispo-ne de una red de Internet wi-fi (denominada eduroam) en todos sus edificios e instalaciones a la que pueden acceder libremente todos sus estudiantes con su iden-tificación de usuario de la Univer-sitat de València y su contraseña.
Asimismo, todos los estudiantes de la Universitat disponen de co-rreo electrónico, un servicio de almacenamiento de información en disco virtual, espacios perso-nales para alojar sus páginas web y un servicio de blog personal.
También están a disposición de los estudiantes diversos servi-cios informáticos que dan apo-yo a la docencia y a los trámites administrativos de los estudian-tes: Aula Virtual, Secretaría Vir-tual y el Portal del Alumno.

PROCEDIMIENTO PARA LA ADMISIÓN DE ESTUDIANTES ERASMUSSi deseas venir a estudiar a la Universitat de València como estu-diante del programa Erasmus, el primer paso es asegurarte que existe un acuerdo bilateral entre tu universidad de origen y la Uni-versitat de València en la titulación que quieres cursar aquí. Si no es así, no podrás venir en calidad de estudiante Erasmus. Por lo tanto es esencial la existencia de un convenio bilateral entre las dos universidades en la titulación que quieres estudiar en Va-lencia y que tu universidad nos comunique que te ha seleccionado como estudiante Erasmus dentro de los plazos, que son: si tu estan-cia tiene lugar en el primer semestre o curso entero, hasta el 15 de Junio, y si tu estancia se desarrolla en el segundo semestre, hasta el 15 de Noviembre.

Dos o tres semanas después del plazo de nominación, el Servicio de Relaciones Internacionales te enviará un correo electrónico con información sobre el Día de Re-cepción y otras fechas relevantes, requisitos o actividades. El Día de Recepción normalmente tendrá lugar en la semana anterior al co-mienzo del semestre.
Al comienzo de la sesión, recibi-rás tu Certificado de Llegada, una tarjeta de estudiante provisional y una carpeta de bienvenida. Ten por favor en cuenta que la fecha de llegada en el Certificado será la fecha del Día de Recepción.
Para cualquier duda o problema que te surja a lo largo de tu estancia en la UV y que no puedas resolver en la Facultad/Escuela, te reco-mendamos que acudas al Servicio de Relaciones Internacionales, cuya oficina está situada en la siguiente dirección: Palacio de Cerveró, Pla-za Cisneros, 4, 46003 Valencia.

El horario de atención de las ofi-cinas es de 9 a 14 horas, de lunes a viernes.
El día de tu último examen en la UV debes solicitar tu Certificado de Estancia a través de nuestra Sede Electrónica (ENTREU), donde constarán las fechas de tu llegada y de la finalización de tu período de intercambio. Antes del período de exámenes, reci-birás una guía que te explicará, paso a paso, cómo solicitar este certificado y cómo descargarlo posteriormente.

Generalmente las clases de cada asignatura duran una o dos horas y muchas titulacio-nes poseen más de un grupo en horarios diferentes. Estudiar en la Universitat
El curso académico está organi-zado en semestres, si bien alguna asignatura puede ser de carácter anual. El curso empieza hacia la segunda semana de septiembre y el primer semestre finaliza sus clases en diciembre; los exámenes finales del semestre se realizan en enero y durante este periodo se in-terrumpen las clases.El segundo semestre se desarrolla desde finales de enero o principios de febrero hasta la segunda o ter-cera semana de mayo, tras lo cual se realizan los exámenes hasta me-diados de junio. Desde finales de junio hasta la segunda semana de
julio tiene lugar la segunda convo-catoria de exámenes del primer y del segundo semestre.La segunda convocatoria es una segunda oportunidad para hacer un examen (si no te presentaste al primer examen o si lo suspen-diste). Como estudiante de intercambio tienes derecho a presentarte a la segunda convocatoria. PRINCIPAL
At the beginning of the XV century, the Judg-es of Valencia brought together the courses depending on the city and the church, lead-ing to the establishment of the Universitat de València on 30th April, 1499 with their own Constitutions, created at the request of the Council of the city of Valencia.
In 1501, the Pope Alejandro VI signed with the royal privilege of Fernando II the pon-tifical pope’s bull, sealed a year later, leading to the official opening of The Estudio Gen-eral de Valencia in 1502 and was compared in prerogatives and distinction to the uni-

versities of Rome, Bologna, Salamanca and Lleida on 13th October, 1502.
Initially there were studies of medicine, hu-manities, technology and law, but new pro-grammes and institutes were added and gave form to the university we know today, a mod-ern European university. It offers practically all branches of knowledge in humanities, basic and technical sciences, health sciences and education as well as social sciences, legal sciences and economics.
In addition to these studies, there is an important commitment to research and to transfer of the results achieved by research and scientific knowledge, to the develop-ment of our society and to the promotion of culture and sports.

HISTORY
The city of Valencia
The city of Valencia was founded in 138 B.C. by the consul of Rome Decimus Junius Bru-tus Galaico. Since then, our city has been a culture crossing. It was a Muslim capital for five centuries from year 711 until the con-quest of King James I, who established the old Valencian Kingdom.
Valencia was an important commercial port in the XV century, a main manufacturer of
silk and other materials, like tile or glazed ceramic in the XVIII century, a major ex-porter in the XIX and XX centuries and a tourist destination since the second half of the past century.
As a consequence of constant evolution, dynamism, intensive cultural life and the mixture of cultures, the changes can be seen across the city. You can enjoy a Roman, Ar-
abic, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Mod-ernist and Rationalist Valencia, along with its constant growth and expansion, its wel-coming and integrating nature, all of which together comprise the latest trends world-wide.

Valencia is the capital of the “Comunidad Valenciana”.
Today, Valencia is the 3rd city of Spain, both in importance and in population (800,000 inhabitants). This number doubles when the metropolitan area is taken into consid-eration, which assumes that the city of Va-lencia, on its own, accounts for 16% of the population of the “Comunidad Valenciana”.
The geographic location of the city offers one of the mildest climates of Europe: a soft Mediterranean climate, with average tem-
peratures between 11o and 26o. The natural environment, the attractive culture and the beaches with fine sand have turned the city into an international tourist centre.
Today Valencia is a city that offers services not only in its own municipality but also beyond its boundaries, mainly focused on final demand activities, retail and wholesale trade, specialized services for firms and professional activities that ac-counts for 74% of the local employment. It is completed by an important industrial basis within the following sectors: paper
and graphic art, wood and furniture, steel products, shoes, textiles and car manufac-turing.
Valencia has important cultural institutions and a rich heritage of art history such as the “Lonja” -a monument which was declared a World Heritage site-, the Towers of Serra-nos and Quart, the Cathedral and the Ba-silica of the “Virgen de los Desamparados”, situated in “Plaza de la Virgen” where you can also find the “Palacio de la Generalidad Valenciana”, headquarter of the Local Gov-ernment.

Valencia is situated on the east-ern coast of the Iberian penin-sula, on the shores of the Med-iterranean Sea, approximately 350 km away from Madrid and Barcleona.
Valencia is easy to reach by plane, boat, train and road.
You can get to Valencia by plane through the airport of Manises , 4.97 mi (8 km) away from the city centre, connected by the subway. The airport has direct connections with the main Spanish cities and with
other cities like London, Par-is, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Brus-sels, Zurich, Frankfurt, Milan, Rome, Bucharest, Sofia, Casa-blanca, Istanbul or Kiev among others.
By boat, since it has an im-portant commercial port and a sea terminal.
By train – its modern cen-tral station is situated in the heart of the city and has railway connections to the rest of Spain and Europe. On the other hand, you can travel from Madrid
to Valencia on the AVE (Alta Velocidad Española = Spanish High Speed), which arrives at Valencia Joaquín Sorolla Sta-tion.
On the road, either by bus or car, via the European Mo-torway network of the Med-iterranean passage E-15, and especially the motorway AP-7, which runs along the Levante seaside, and the highways A-23 Sagunto–Somport, and A-3 Madrid-Valencia.

BURJASSOT-PATERNA AREA
In these two municipalities, you can find the Burjassot-Paterna Campus of the Universitat de València.
Burjassot has nearly 40,000 inhabitants and its origins date back to the Muslim period.
Paterna has more than 60,000 inhabitants; in its municipality there are several industrial parks, the “Parque Tecnológico” and the UV “Parc Científic”.
Only 4,5 mi away (7 km), the area is very well connected with lines 1 and 4 of MetroValencia, and bus lines of the Municipal Trans-portation Bureau (Empresa Municipal de Tranportes EMT) and the Municipal Transportation Consortium (Consorcio Municipal de Transportes CMT).

LANGUAGE COST OF LIVING
The languages spoken in Valencia are Castilian or Spanish, as well as Valencian, the native language of the Valencian Community, which is spoken in other Spanish territories, like in Catalonia, in the South of France and in Andorra, where it is the only official language. It is also spoken in Alghero, an Italian city situated on the island of Sardinia.
Both Castilian and Valencian are present in all the spheres of every-day life. Both of these languages are used as a normal vehicle of ex-pression at the Universitat de València. GETTING AROUND VALENCIA
Valencia´s good climate and orography makes walking and biking a perfect way to get around. If you bike, there is an extensive bike track (CarrilBici) across the city, but remember to follow the circulation rules.Furthermore you have the pos-sibility to use Valenbisi: bikes which are placed all over Valen-cia. At the station of Valenbisi you take a bike by using your season ticket and return it at the station of your destination with-out paying anything during the first 30 minutes.Valencia also has a vast network of public transport comprising
buses, metro and tram or street-car, which allow you to move through the whole city.The 55 EMT bus lines (red col-our) allow you to get everywhere in the city. Five metro lines con-nect other places of the city and the metropolitan area. Through lines 4 (Tarongers station and Vi-cent Andrés Estellés station), and 3 (Facultats station) you can go to the campuses of Tarongers, Bur-jassot-Paterna and Blasco-Ibáñez respectively (it takes half an hour, approximately). There is also a bus service that connects Valen-cia with several municipalities next to the city. These buses (yel-
low colour) are called MetroBus.There are various types of tick-ets and passes for buses and the metro, as well as combined ones that allow you to use dif-ferent transport networks. Valencia is a city offering a sig-nificant number of cultural ac-tivities.The city has many theatres, out of which the Main Theatre (Te-atro Principal) is the most im-portant. In Valencia, you can also find the Parque Natural de La Al-bufera with a surface of 51,89 acres (21.000 hectares). This park is one of the best known natural sites of the Valencian Community and is formed by the great lake of La Albufera,

Valencia is a Mediterranean city, fond of festivals, group celebra-tions, preservation of traditions, festivals and habits.
Mostly, festivals in Valencia are celebrated in the streets due to the good climate and are enjoyed in groups. Music, gunpowder and fire are the main ingredients accompanying celebrations, reflecting a millennial Mediterranean heritage.
One of the most famous festivals in Valencia is “Las Fallas”, cel-ebrated in March and ending on the 19th of the month. “Corpus Christi,” “La Semana Santa Marinera” and “October 9” are other remarkable celebrations.

Valencia is famous for its gas-tronomy and especially for its world famous paella.
There are several types of pa-ella as well as different typical rice dishes, such as the “arroz al horno”, “arroz negro” or “arroz a banda” and other international-ly well-known Valencian meals, like the “fideuà”.
The Valencian gastronomy is typically Mediterranean, based on meats, fish, vegetables, olive
oil and fruits. You mustn’t miss the Mediterranean diet, healthy, nutritious and well-balanced.
One of the Valencian traditions is to have a dinner based on “tapas” in bars, where you will have the chance to get to know Valencian wines, which are more and more valued for their quality and the grape varieties used for their production.

Valencia is much more than just a city. Given its location, you can enjoy the seaside as well as the nearby mountains, allowing you to enjoy an urban and rural environment.

Studying at the Universitat de València is much more than just going to class. The UV offers you a series of services and facilities to improve your stay at university.
To organize yourself, you have to take into account the usual class schedules. You can find them on the web pages of the faculty or school where you are enrolled. Many degrees have courses taking place in the morning or afternoon; other courses take up a whole day during several days of the week. In the morning, classes normally start at 8 or 8:30 am. In the afternoon classes normally begin at 3 or 3:30 pm and finish before 9:30 pm.

SPORTS
The Universitat de València has a wide range of sports in its Sports Campuses, located on Blasco Ibáñez Campus and Tarongers Campus.
On Burjassot-Paterna Campus, in addition to the sport facili-ties, there is an agreement with the municipality of Burjassot to use the municipal sports facili-ties, next to the Campus.
Among the main sports you can play there are soccer, indoor football, basketball, handball,
volleyball, rugby, judo, karate, taekwondo, kendo, tennis, ta-ble tennis, badminton, fencing, squash, padel tennis, “fron-tenis”, athletics and triathlon among others.
The university also organizes sporting and recreational ac-tivities such as aerobics, con-temporary dance, jazz, Spanish dance, “sevillanas”, yoga, mar-tial arts and others.
At the Universitat de València, there are male as well as female
teams participating in different university leagues and competi-tions, where awards have been won.

Living the University
The Universitat de València has an Internet Wi-Fi network (eduroam) in all of its buildings and facilities, where students have free access to internet us-ing their student ID and pass-word.
In addition, all UV students have an e-mail account, room to store information on a virtual drive, personal spaces to host their websites and a personal blog ser-vice.
There are also several comput-ing services available to stu-
dents, supporting teaching and administrative proceedings. The Virtual Classroom, the Vir-tual Secretariat and the Student Gate.
When you enrol at the “Secre-taría” of your Faculty/School, you will be given your user-name, password and e-mail ac-count. It’s very important that you check the inbox of your UV e-mail account, as UV Offices/Centres/Lecturers will send you all the necessary commu-nications to that account.

The Student Delegation organ-izes –through the Information Service (SEDI)- a Welcome Week for UV students, every year in the second half of Oc-tober. It’s a week with diverse activities, conceived for new students: music concerts, sport competitions, debates, exhibi-tions and more.

ADMISSION PROCESS FOR ERASMUS STUDENTS
If you want to come to the UV with the Erasmus Programme, the first step is to check if there is a bilateral agreement between your home univer-sity and the University of Valencia in the field of your degree. Otherwise, you cannot come as an Erasmus Student.
Therefore, there has to exist a bilateral agreement between both your home university and the Uni-versity of Valencia in the field you wish to study here. Furthermore, your home university has to inform us that you have been granted the status of an Erasmus Student.
Our deadlines to receive nominations from uni-versities are:
• Fall semester or full year (starting in Septem-ber): June 15th.
• Spring semester (starting in February): No-vember 15th.
After receiving your nomination, the Internation-al Relations Service will check if you can be ac-cepted according to our bilateral agreement and send you an e-mail with your password. Thus you will be able to fill in the online application form and upload the following documents:

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS SERVICE(CENTRAL OFFICE)
Two or three weeks after the nom-ination deadline, the International Relations Service will send you an e-mail with information about the Reception Day and other relevant dates, requirements or activities. The Reception Day will usually take place on the week before the semester starts.
At the beginning of the session, you will be given your Certifi-cate of Arrival, a temporary stu-dent card and a welcome pack. Please note: the date of arrival on the Certificate will be the date of the Reception Day.
For any doubt or problem com-ing up during your stay at UV and which you are unable to solve at the Faculty/School, we recom-mend you to go to the Interna-tional Relations Service, whose office is located at the following address: Palacio de Cerveró, Pla-za Cisneros, 4, 46003 Valencia.
If you are an Erasmus or SICUE student (coming from a Euro-pean university) who will be studying at Burjassot-Paterna Campus, you can go the Inter-national Relations office located inside the library building “Bib-
lioteca de Ciencias”, Avenida Dr. Moliner, 50, 46100 Burjassot.
Opening hours are: 9 am - 2 pm, from Monday to Friday.
On the day of your last exam at UV you should apply for your Certificate of Attendance through our Electronic Office (ENTREU). This certificate will contain the dates of your arrival and of the end of your exchange period. Be-fore the examination period, you will receive a guide explaining to you, step by step, how to apply for it and how to download it later on.

Each centre of the Universitat de València has its own classes, training modules and other ac-tivities.
Normally, each class lasts one or two hours. Many of the pro-grammes have more than one set of schedules. All courses have their own teaching guide, including for instance the eval-uation criteria, the teaching objectives, the subjects in-volved, the bibliography rec-ommended to prepare them, further activities to be carried out apart from studying, (such
as training, case solving or pa-pers), the lecturers and their office hours.

ACADEMICCALENDAR
The academic calendar is di-vided into semesters, although some courses have an annual calendar. The academic year begins towards the second week of September and the first semester ends in December. At the end of the semester, when classes finish, students have two weeks of exams in January.
The second semester starts by the end of January or at the be-ginning of February until the second or third week of May. After this semester the exams run until mid-June. From the end of June to the second week

of July you can repeat the exams of the first as well as of the sec-ond semester.The resit (or second examina-tion call) is a second chance to take an exam (if you did not take the first exam, if you failed or if you want to improve your mark). As an exchange student you are entitled to go to the resit. If your exchange period takes place during the first semester, you will have to come back to the UV to repeat an exam.You can find a detailed calendar on our webpage:

The UV has several big libraries in each of its academic campus-es: the science library “Eduard Boscà”, the science library for health “Pelegrí Casanova”, the humanities library “Joan Reglà” and the social science library “Gregori Maians”, and other li-braries located in some of the faculties and schools of the Universitat.
These libraries have 1,200,000 monographs on paper, 280,000 in electronic version; 5,000 pe-riodicals on paper and 35,000
in electronic version; 100 on-line databases.
