Objetivos / Objectives of the course The major aim of ESTUDIO SELECTIVO DE LA LITERATURA DE LOS ESTADOS UNIDOS I is to explore the evolution of the short story from 1900 to the late forties, and to provide an overview of the major authors, thematic forces and ideological problems concerning the historical development of the genre. Students will also be introduced to some of the most useful strategies for interpreting each of the texts assigned Contenidos/ Syllabus 1. A revision of the critical history of the short fiction. 1.1. Tennessee Williams Something about him.Language and power. 2. O. Henry and the short story. The demise of the South. Narrative techniques and ideological conundrums. 2.1. The ideological vision of the city: from horse-dragged wagons to el trains. "Thimble, Thimble", Furnished Room, "The Gift of the Magi", "October and June", "The Coming-out of Maggie,Witches' Loaves, etc. 3. "Language as disruption": Gertrude Stein and the avant-garde literary journals. Extracts from Tender Buttons and transition. 3.1. "The Gentle Lena": the basic strategies to create character and mood. 4. The beginning of language minimalism: Sherwood Anderson and tone. 4.1. "Hands" and "Death in the woods". 5. Ernest Hemingway: an introduction to his stories. 5.1. The "zero ending" and the "iceberg" principle.5.2. "Cat in the rain", "Hills like white elephants", "Fathers and Sons" and "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place", etc. 6. William Saroyan: from the stream-of-consciousness technique of "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" to the pebble writing stories. 6.1. A selection of his best known stories. 7. Truman Capote: Master Misery and Miriam. Freudian symbols.Sexuality and loneliness in American society. 8. Carson McCullers: Loneliness and freaks in American conformist society. 8.1. A selection of her fiction 9. An introduction to the fiction of Raymond Carver: Theyre not your husband and View-finding. Mtodos docentes/ Teaching methods Teachers presentation of the new topics and critical terms In-class discussions Oral presentations Evaluacin/ Assessment Criterios de evaluacin / Assessment criteria: Class attendance and compliance with the essay writing tasks Reading comprehension and ability to write critical essays Ability to express arguments and defend them in class Ability to use hermeneutical/Interpretive tools to the decoding of texts Historical knowledge of the ideological/historical contexts Procedimientos de evaluacin / Assessment procedures: Evaluation will be based on : Short Essays (30%) Informal writings in class (10%).
