As a process improvement the San Gabriel Mission Fiesta Steer-ing Committee is excited to announce that we will be transition-ing from cash to tickets (Scripps) for the Fiesta this year. The Fiesta is scheduled for September 2-4, 2016. Please mark your calendars. Scripps is a safer, sound alternative to using cash. Since the use of tickets will remove the need to make change at each food, beverage and game booth, it will essentially speed up the lines and create a more enjoyable experience for everyone. By stream-lining the exchange of cash our goal is to develop a sustainable operation to make Fiesta profitable for future generations. The annual Fiesta celebrates the community spirit that is essential to who we are as a parish, school and Church. Whether you have attended the Fiesta for years, or whether you are new parishion-ers who will be attending for the first time, we ask for everyone’s patience during this transition. Dear Friends,

Today’s gospel from Luke marks a biblical and solemn turn in Jesus’ life. “When the days for Jesus’ being taken up were fulfilled, he resolutely determined to journey to Jerusa-lem.” In Luke’s gospel Jesus goes to Jerusalem as an adult only once: to begin his passion, death and resurrection. If Jesus knew what was awaiting him, why did he choose to con-tinue to Jerusalem? Perhaps a more resent example can help us to understand Jesus’ decision. At Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream” speech, he knew that he might not see the ful-fillment of this dream. The death threats against him were increasing and yet, he continued on his journey. Why did he continue? Like Jesus, to not continue would have been a deni-al of his call; to not continue would have been closing his eyes and ears to the pain and suffering of his people; to not contin-ue would be a rejection of his kinship and responsibility with the suffering people of the world, particularly of the African-American community. Jesus carried not only our pain and suffering, but also our salvation. As Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem he sends disci-ples ahead of him to prepare either his stay or preaching op-portunities. Most Jews avoided Samaria, even though it meant a longer journey to Jerusalem. Samaritans and Jews did not get along well; they had mutual dislike and suspicion for one another, even though they were related by race and religion. When it was known that Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem, he and his disciples are refused hospitality. This rejection of Jesus was more out of ignorance than of malice. They probably did not know Jesus or his message. All that they knew is that he was Jew on his way to Jerusalem. Jesus was willing to bring his message of God’s Kingdom beyond the boundaries of Israel, but this Samaritan village was blind-ed by its ethnic and religious prejudice of Jews. Does this sound familiar to us? To deny and ignore our own prejudices and blind spots is to not recognize the Lord when he comes to us. Then comes the reaction of the disciples; they seem to have a zeal for Jesus and want to protect him by calling for the destruction of the Samaritan village in Jesus’ name. This seemingly good and distorted intention should also be very familiar to us. How often do we not see religious people insti-gating violence and hatred in the name of God and Jesus? We justify our violence, hatred and distorted notions of zeal for God with the conviction that we are defending God. The dis-ciples had much to learn about Jesus, and so do we. Jesus promptly rebukes them. The Samaritan village is acting out of ignorance and prejudice, but so are the disciples. Here we can make the distinction of condemning the sin, even out of ignorance and prejudice, and condemning the sinner, which only belongs to God. Jesus does not seem to be bothered by their rejection, he continues on his journey.

La vida de Jesús en el evangelio de hoy toma un cambio de proporción bíblica y solemne. “Cuando ya se acercaba el tiempo en que tenía que salir de este mundo, Jesús tomo la firme determinación de emprender el viaje a Jerusalén.” En el evangelio de Lucas, Jesús (como adulto) va solamente una vez a Jerusalén: para su pasión, muerte y resurrección. ¿Si Jesús sabia lo que le esperaba en Jerusalén, ¿por qué continuó su ca-mino? Quizás un ejemplo más contemporáneo nos pueda ayudar a entender su decisión. En su discurso “sueño por un mundo nue-vo” Martin Lutero King ya sabia que no alcanzaría a ver su sueño hecho realidad. Las amenazas de muerte se intensificaban, pero aun así continuó su jornada. ¿Por qué continuó? Al igual que Jesús, él no continuar seria negar su vocación; seria cerrar los ojos y oídos al dolor y sufrimiento de su pueblo; seria rechazar su hermandad y responsabilidad ante el sufrimiento de los pueblos, particularmente el de su comunidad áfrico-americana. Jesús lle-vaba nuestro dolor y sufrimiento, al igual que nuestra salvación. Al comenzar su jornada hacia Jerusalén Jesús manda a sus discípulos por delante para que preparen su estancia o quizás una oportunidad de predicación. La mayoría de judíos evitaban pasar por Samaria, aunque tuviesen que recorrer una ruta más larga rumbo a Jerusalén. Samaritanos y judíos tenían mutua enemistad aunque eran parientes en etnicidad y religión. Cuando la aldea samaritana se enteró que Jesús iba rumbo a Jerusalén le negaron hospitalidad a él y a sus discípulos. Este rechazo de Jesús fue más por ignorancia que por malicia. Es muy probable que ellos no supieran de Jesús o de su predicación. Lo único que sabían era que Jesús era judío y que iba rumbo a Jerusalén. Jesús estaba dispuesto a llevar su mensaje del Reino más allá de los límites de Israel, pero esta aldea samaritana estaba cegada por sus prejuicios étnicos y religiosos contra los judíos. ¿Suena familiar esto? Ig-norar o negar nuestros prejuicios es no reconocer nuestra cegue-dad al no recibir al Señor cuando viene a nosotros. Después viene la reacción de los discípulos; parecen tener un verdadero celo por Jesús y pretenden protegerlo al pedir la des-trucción de la aldea samaritana en nombre de Jesús. Esta aparen-te buena y distorsionada intensión también debe ser muy familiar para nosotros. ¿Cuantas veces no hemos visto a ciertos líderes religiosos, políticos y gente en general fomentar violencia y odio en nombre de Dios o Jesús? Justificamos nuestra violencia, odio y nociones distorsionadas de celo religioso con la convicción de que estamos defendiendo a Dios. Los discípulos tenían mucho que aprender de Jesús, al igual que nosotros también. Jesús in-mediatamente los reprime. La aldea samaritana está actuando en ignorancia al rechazar a Jesús, al igual que los discípulos al pedir su destrucción. Hemos de distinguir condenar el pecado, aun cuando sea por ignorancia y miedo, condenar al pecador, algo que solo le pertenece a Dios. A Jesús no parece molestarle mu-cho este rechazo, el continua en jornada hacia Jerusalén.

The San Gabriel Mission Life, Justice and Peace will hold an orientation meeting to answer these questions and more. Royal Court is open to all young women between the ages of 16 to 18, who are single and members of the San Gabriel Mis-sion Parish or who attend San Gabriel Mission High School. Deadline to turn in application is July 2nd, 2016. Application fee of $20 is required upon turning in of Registration Form. Application fee is non-refundable if not selected. Scholarships Available for San Gabriel Mission High School

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Mission Elementary Students – Learning Through Play

Mission Elementary has held a long tradition of academic excellence, but part of our mission is to provide an environment where students are not just taught, but are engaged. Our fourth grade teacher incorpo-rated playing into her Social Students class by having students create board games using their knowledge of the Gold Rush Era. Each student created their own board game with question cards, chance cards, player pieces, and a reward system. Students wrote their own instruction manuals and design a board game that would challenge their classmates and test their own knowledge of the Gold Rush! Students were amazed to learn that forty-niners spent so much time and energy looking for gold. We learned that the Gold Rush greatly increased the population in California because so many people were interested in finding riches! Students had a chance to play their classmates' board games and really develop a lifelong love of learning!

San Gabriel Mission High School has recently received new funding from an outside foundation that will allow for full tuition scholarships for qualified students. The school is seeking incoming 9th grade students who desire a Catholic education from a college preparatory all girls high school. The applicants must meet the following requirements:

Established in 1949, San Gabriel Mission High School is a Catholic parish secondary school located on the grounds of the historic fourth mission of California. The school offers a college preparatory program to young women of diverse backgrounds. In addition, the school is currently the only all girl school in California to be accredit-ed as an International Baccalaureate World School offering the Diploma Programme. With 250 students and 18 lay teachers, we provide a student to teacher ratio of 14:1. San Gabriel Mission High School also offers a competitive athletic program, which includes two current championship teams in Volleyball and Soccer.
