Poets from the Spanish-speaking world join “poetry marathon” BY DAVID MONTGOMERY June 6 /14 The poets completed the first leg of their marathon Friday afternoon at the Library of Congress — saying 37 poems in two hours — without breaking a sweat. They replenished themselves with Salamancan almonds that José María Prieto had brought from Spain. But they hardly needed a break. The drive to create and share the creation is indefatigable, beyond their control. “It’s the necessity to express something,” said Eugenia Muñoz from Colombia. “It’s the most important thing you do,” said Rei Berroa from the Dominican Republic.

This year Berroa invited eight poets, each born in a different country (though some work in the U.S.): Besides Muñoz and Prieto, there is Indran Amirthanayagam (Sri Lanka); Basilio Belliard (Dominican Republic); Ana Cecilia Blum (Ecuador); Margarito Cuéllar (Mexico, unable to attend at the last minute); Enrique Solinas (Argentina); and Zingonia Zingone (Italian, raised in Costa Rica). To listen to Ramona Morales mother of a sixteen years old girl murdered in Ciudad Juarez, inspired me to write the poems "Una madre sin su hija", "El calvario de mi hija" and "En el reino de la no justicia" in solidarity with her and the hundred of mothers who

The three poems were published in the world known website www.mujeresdejuarez.org but it was high jacked and the poems are no longer there. Coordinator of the Spanish Program In the former Foreign Language Department (1998-2003) In the School of World Studies (2007-2013): Leadership for beginning, intermediate and upper-level courses, for 25 Spanish Faculty, scheduling around 82 Spanish courses for Fall, Spring and Summer, producing and uploading the annual report of the Spanish Program Assessment in WEAVE. This role was a labor of love, as it included significant responsibilities during a time when I taught 6 courses per year and was working on publishing books. Both my predecessor and successor in the coordination did have release time each semester. I do believe I made a difference for VCU Spanish students. During my coordination of the Spanish Program I focused in the standards of Foreign Language Learning for the 21st century: Those standards are known as the five C's: Communication (speaking, listening, reading and writing), Cultures, Connections, Comparisons and Communities. Under my leadership I made changes in the sequence of the four first semesters of Spanish: Instead of teaching all of the Spanish grammar in three semesters, to teach it in SPAN 101 and SPAN 102 (4.0 credits each one). In the third semester SPAN 201 (3.0 credits) we taught a review of SPAN 101 and 102. And in the fourth semester, SPAN 202 we focused on literary readings, analysis and interpretation as a bridge to the 300 level classes on Culture and Literature of Spain and Latin American countries. 7. Advising. I began advising since 1994 for Spanish, International Studies, Latin American Studies, and Study Abroad. This continued until the creation of the SWS Advising Office in 2005. While serving as Spanish Coordinator, I contributed to the SWS Advising and Global Education Offices in the Spanish course equivalents for independent students abroad. I also have advised some VCU student organizations and contributed to two theses of non-VCU students. I am always ready to advise my students of lower, intermediate and 300-levels in the possibilities of pursuing a double major or two minors through their elective credits. I have assisted Spanish students in their job-seeking or graduate studies applications, providing over one hundred letters of recommendation and referrals. 8. Study Abroad I have been leading study abroad groups without interruption first to Guatemala and later to Mexico, for thirteen years. In addition, I have been teaching a class since 2009

33

during the program in Mexico since 2009. The classes I offer abroad are at all levels of Spanish and they are taught at a well established University. I take care that the textbooks and syllabus content of all classes be the same of VCU Spanish Program curriculum. Under my leadership in Study Abroad Programs over 240 students have had the opportunity to advance in their class requirements, to improve their listening and speaking Spanish skills and to be immersed in the Hispanic culture. 9. Teaching and Collaboration with SETI (Spanish English, English Spanish Translation Interpretation ) Certificate of the Spanish Program. I work with SETI faculty to prepare students in their reading, analysis, interpretation and translation skills. I have designed and taught two classes: Poetry and Translation (2009-present) and Literary Translation: Theory and Practice, which I started this Fall of 2014.Furthermore, in the Summer Study Abroad Program in Mexico I have been teaching the Poetry and Translation class and offering a SETI elective class for SETI students to advance in their Certificate classes required, to improve language skills, to immerse them in Hispanic culture and to interact linguistically and socially with the groups of people with whom they will very likely work as interpreters and translators. 10. Teaching and Service to communities of Spanish and bilingual education teachers and students. I have served the community of Spanish Teachers as well as the students of the schools of Henrico, Chesterfield, and Arlington Counties in Virginia, I have been judge for diverse literary contests, and I participated actively giving poetry creation workshops for Middle and High School Spanish students in the Chesterfield County Public Schools’ Annual Event “Españolización” during a four-year span. My most recent service to the community of Spanish teachers and students was my project based on the implementation of my twice- awarded method in my textbook, published by Pearson: Lectura de textos: Interpretación y análisis. Narrativa, poesía, drama y ensayo.Siglo XX. In class demonstrations in ten different high school and middle school Spanish classes in Virginia, the method was applied to the poetry and short story genres. I am also engaging in teaching at the national level giving workshops of my method of teaching. Two proposals has been accepted: in conferences, one at the 2013 CLTA (California Language Teachers Association) Conference. in San Diego, California, which I had to decline due to lack of funds, and another one at the 42nd Annual TABE (Texas Association of Bilingual Education) Conference, which I am going to present in October, 2014.
