    Programme inInternationalDevelopmentStudies

    Why International DevelopmentStudies in Olomouc?Palacky University in Olomouc is one o the oldest univer-sities in Central Europe, established in 1573. With eightaculties and about 23,000 students it is one o the leadingcentres o teaching and research in the Czech Republic. Teuniversity is located in Olomouc, a small historical city witha pleasant university atmosphere.

    Te aim o the new International Development Studies pro-gramme in English is to prepare proessionals or careers indevelopment policy and practice. Students will acquire pro-ound knowledge in development related issues as well as re-search methodology. Tey can also choose rom a variety o

    specialization courses to best suit their needs and interests.Upon successul completion o the programme students willbe equipped to work in state as well as private and non-gov-ernmental sectors at national and international levels.

    The Department of Development Studies

    has 10 years o experience in the field o development stu-dies. Te department offers bachelor, master and doctoralprogrammes in International Development Studies taught inCzech. It is one o the first programmes in development stud-ies in the region o Central and Eastern Europe. Te Depart-ment premises are located in a brand new building o the Fac-ulty o Science which provides modern, high-quality teachingand study environments.

    Besides providing theoretical knowledge, the programme alsoemphasizes practical hands-on experience and internationaloutreach. Students have an opportunity to participate in theErasmus programme and spend a semester or two at one o

    our 20 partner universities worldwide (e.g. France, Spain,Norway, New Caledonia, Martinique). Students also have theopportunity to apply or a Vavrousek scholarship unded bythe Department o Development Studies, which enables themto conduct research, implement projects and undertake in-ternships abroad.

    Annually students can participate in different field tripswhich aim to introduce them to various international organi-zations important in the area o international development(European Commission, United Nations agencies etc.).

    Programme structureStudents are obliged to take courses in the ollowing structure:

    Methodological courses Quantitative Methods in Development Qualitative Methods in Development

    Regional courses Geography and Development o Latin America Geography and Development o Arica and Middle East Geography and Development o South and Southeast Asia Geography and Development o Central Asia and Caucasus

    Selected specialization coursesTe offer o specialization courses may change in any given year. Global Environmental Issues Project Cycle Management Geography o the Czech Republic Evaluation o Development Projects Conflict, Security and Development

    Global Challenges International Political Economy o Development Negotiation, Facilitation, Mediation Community Development and Participation Internship

    Wide variety o courses are offered by the Department,the Faculty o Science and Palacky University.

    Afer completing the required courses students submit anddeend their final thesis (20,000-25,000 words) and sit or afinal exam.
