Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” [Mark 8:34]

Nobody likes to suffer. All of us avoid pain if we can. But Jesus says that if we are to be his disciple, his fol-lower, we MUST deny ourselves from having everything comfortable. If our eyes are fixed on doing what he did, we must expect suffering. The thing is Jesus makes suffering CREATIVE, or redemptive, because he shows us how to carry pain and difficulties in a way that serves others and shares in God’s creative energy. Most of the world will think you are crazy to follow a suffering serv-ant Messiah, but that is just what Jesus, Mary and Jo-seph did with their lives. The cross was real in their lives a long time before Jesus carried it.

This Catechetical Sunday celebrates the creative power of the cross, how we learn from the witness of our parents and teachers who sacrificed for us and teach us the life-giving way of sacrificial living. As young people grow up they learn the life-giving way of faith that is not afraid to make the first move to recon-cile, to speak up, to heal a relationship, or to say “I’m sorry.” Jesus needs witnesses to his love, people who will go the extra mile to care for others simply because that is the way of our faith, the way of stewardship, car-ing for others with the same amazing grace that we have received. We thank our parents and catechists for their efforts to teach us this.

Questions for the week: What is an incredible gift that you have been given? How has awesome gift empowered you to sacrifice and share with oth-ers? How has God enlisted you to be his witness?

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

“El que quiera venir detrás de mi debe negarse a sí mis-mo, tomar mi cruz y seguirme.” [Marcos 8:34]

A nadie le gusta sufrir. Todos evitamos el dolor si po-demos. Pero Jesús dice que, si queremos ser sus discí-pulos, sus seguidores, DEBEMOS negarnos a nosotros mismos de tener todo confortable. Si nuestros ojos es-tán fijos en hacer lo que él hizo, debemos esperar sufri-miento. La cosa es que Jesús hace el sufrimiento CREATIVO, o redentor, porque él nos enseña como car-gar el dolor y las dificultades en una manera de que sirva a otros y comparta la energía creativa de Dios. La ma-yoría del mundo creerá que estás loco de seguir a un Mesías sirviente, pero eso es lo que Jesús, María y José hicieron con sus vidas. La cruz era real en sus vidas mucho tiempo antes de que Jesús la cargara.

Este domingo Catequético celebramos el poder crea-tivo de la cruz, como aprendemos del testimonio de nuestros padres y maestros que se sacrificaron por no-sotros y nos enseñaron la manera de dar vida del vivir sacrificado. Como la gente joven crece ellos aprenden del vivir sacrificado de la fe que no tiene miedo de hacer el primer movimiento para la reconciliación, de hablar alto, de sanar una relación o de decir “Lo siento.” Jesús necesita testigos de su amor, gente que vaya la milla extra por cuidar de otros simplemente porque esa es nuestra manera de nuestra fe, la manera de la corres-ponsabilidad, cuidar a los otros con la misma gracia ma-ravillosa que hemos recibido. Damos gracias a nuestros padres y catequistas por sus esfuerzos para enseñarnos esto.

Preguntas de la semana: ¿Cual es un don increíble que tú has recibido? ¿Como ese maravilloso don te ha dado poder de sacrificar y compartir con otros? ¿Como Dios te ha enlistado a ser su testigo?
