Alicante es una ciudad de tamaño medio ubicada en la costa este española, está bañada por el mar Mediterráneo y es la capital de la conocida Costa Blanca, que alberga localidades de renombre turístico internacional como Benidorm, Calpe, Jávea o Altea entre otros. Esta condición de ciudad mediterránea le confiere un carácter propio y unas características climáticas que, unidas a sus playas y a sus encantos naturales y su patrimonio histórico, la han convertido en uno de los destinos turísticos principales de España e incluso Europa.Disfruta de una temperatura media anual superior a los 18ºCy de más de 3.000 horas de sol al año, con unos inviernos suaves y unos veranos cálidos que invitan a disfrutar de las aguas de sus playas.Se trata de una ciudad abierta al resto del mundo que disfruta de modernas infraestructuras de transporte. Entre las conexiones directas regulares de su aeropuerto internacional destacan Barcelona, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca y Santiago de Compostela entre los destinos nacionales, y ciudades europeas como Amsterdam, Belfast, Berlín, Birmingham, Bristol, Bruselas, Copenhague, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edimburgo, Estocolmo, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Liverpool, Londres, Manchester, Milán, Moscú, Newcastle, Oslo y Paris entre otras. Igualmente, sus estaciones de ferrocarril y autobuses o sus autopistas y red de carreteras, la nutren de forma constante de visitantes. Mención especial merece la conexión de tren de alta velocidad que unen Madrid y Alicante en poco más de 2 horas. La ciudad cuenta también con un puerto deportivo.En su emplazamiento actual, el nacimiento de Alicante se remonta a la época de dominación árabe cuando, por motivos defensivos, la población se desplazó desde la zona conocida como el Tossal de Manises, ubicado a unos 3 kilómetros al norte de la ciudad, a la zona del Monte Benacantil, en cuya cumbre se construyó el Castillo de Santa Bárbara. En su ladera se desarrollaría primeramente la Vila Vella, que tras la conquista cristiana en 1247, se convirtió en la Vila Nova.Alicante ha sabido adaptarse en todo momento a los nuevos tiempos y prueba de ello es el hecho de haberse convertido en la sede de la Oficina de Armonización del Mercado Interior (OAMI) de la Unión Europea. Disfruta de una completa y variada oferta hotelera en constante renovación, gran variedad de playas y zonas de paseo, amplia oferta para ir de compras y disfrutar del ocio y los deportes al aire libre, como la náutica y el golf, así como una importante tradición gastronómica y de fiestas, incluso de renombre internacional. Todo ello sin olvidar la gran tradición de ciudad universitaria. Su presente y su futuro prometedor se funden con un pasado de intensa historia que han dejado una impronta perfectamente visible en sus numerosos yacimientos arqueológicos y en los museos que se encargan de mantener viva esta memoria.

Historia


Alicante is a medium-sized city on the east coast of Spain, bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, and capital of the well-known Costa Blanca, where internationally renowned towns such as Benidorm, Calpe, Jávea and Altea among others are located. Being a Mediterranean city bestows Alicante with its own character and climatic characteristics which, combined with its beaches and its natural treasures and historical heritage, have turned it into one of the main tourist destinations in Spain, and even Europe. It enjoys an average annual temperature of more than 18ºC and more than 3,000 hours of sun per year, with mild winters and hot summers that entice visitors to enjoy the water and the beaches. Alicante is connected to the rest of the world via modern transport infrastructures. Among the regular direct connections from its international airport are Barcelona, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca and Santiago de Compostela among the national destinations, and European cities such as Amsterdam, Belfast, Berlin, Birmingham, Bristol, Brussels, Copenhagen, Dublin, Dusseldorf, Edinburgh, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Helsinki, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Milan, Moscow, Newcastle, Oslo and Paris, among others. Likewise, its train and bus stations and its motorways and road networks constantly bring new visitors. There is a new fast train connection linking Madrid and Alicante is about 2 hours. The city also has a marina.In its current location, Alicante’s roots go back to the era of Arab rule when, for reasons of defence, the town moved from the area known as Tossal de Manieses, located 3 kilometres to the north of the city, to the area of Mount Benacantil, at the top of which the Santa Bárbara Castle was built. First of all, Vila Vella (Old Town) developed on the mountainside, and after the Christian conquest in 1247, it became Vila Nova (New Town). Alicante has always been able to adapt to changing times. An example of this is the fact that it has become the headquarters of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) of the European Union. It boasts a comprehensive and varied selection of hotels, a wide variety of beaches and promenades, a wide range of options for shopping and enjoying outdoor sports and leisure, such as sailing and golf, as well as internationally renowned traditional dishes and festivities. Not to mention its strong tradition as a university city. Its present and its promising future blend with a past of intense history, which has left a perfectly visible mark in the numerous archaeological sites and in the museums dedicated to keeping this memory alive.

CASTILLO DE SANTA BÁRBARA Frente Playa Postiguet. Hábitat al aire libre - Fortificación.Medieval cristiano – Moderno – Contemporáneo. Siglos XIV - XX.

Se encuentra ubicado sobre el monte Benacantil, mole rocosa de 166 m. de altitud lindante con el mar, lo que le confería un enorme valor estratégico ya que desde la misma se divisa toda la bahía de Alicante y sus alrededores terrestres.En sus laderas se han encontrado restos arqueológicos de la Edad del Bronce, ibéricos y de la época romana, si bien el origen de la actual fortaleza hay que buscarlo a finales del siglo IX cuando la dominación musulmana.Adquiere este castillo el nombre de Santa Bárbara porque el día de su festividad, 4 de Diciembre de 1248, la tomó a los árabes el infante Alfonso de Castilla, futuro rey Alfonso X el Sabio. Se divide este castillo en tres recintos bien diferenciados.El primero de ellos es el más alto, se le conoce por «La torreta», al encontrarse en él la vieja Torre del Homenaje, y tiene los vestigios más antiguos de toda la fortaleza, unos basamentos de los siglos XI al XIII. En este recinto contemplamos, entre otros, el llamado Baluarte de los Ingleses, así como otras dependencias: Parque de Ingenieros, Sala Noble, que fuera hospital, Casa del Gobernador, etc. La explanada más elevada es conocida por «Macho del Castillo» y allí estuvo la antigua alcazaba.El recinto intermedio corresponde a las dependencias más importantes concluidas en 1580: Salón Felipe II, antiguo Cuerpo de la Tropa frente al amplio Patio de Armas a cuyas espaldas se hallan las ruinas de la ermita de Santa Bárbara, Cuerpo de Guardia, Baluarte de la Reina...Del siglo XVIII data el recinto inferior donde encontramos el Revellín del Bon Repós, que hace actualmente las funciones de aparcamiento y en el que se ubica el monumento al ilustre militar alicantino Félix Berenguer de Marquina que fuera capitán general de Filipinas y virrey de Nuevo México. El gran escudo de mármol blanco (s. XVIII) que hay sobre la puerta de acceso al segundo recinto se hallaba en el Real Consulado del Mar, edificio destruido por una explosión.

The castle occupies the summit of Mount Benacantil, a peak rising up from the beach to a height of 166m. This provides a privileged look-out point over the sea, of enormous strategic value, of both the bay of Alicante and the surrounding farmland.Archaeological remains from the Bronze Age, Iberian and Roman periods have all been found here although the origin of the present day fortress must be dated at the end of the 9th century under Islamic rule.It is known as Santa Barbara Castle since prince Alfonso of Castille, the future Alfonso X El Sabio (The Sage), conquered it from the Arabs on the 4th December, 1248, festivity of Santa Barbara.The castle has three differentiated enclosures.The highest part is known as la Torreta (the small tower), since the old Homage Tower is found here and also the basements from the 11th to the 13th centuries. In this enclosure we can see, amongst others, the so-called Englishmen’s Bulwark and other premises: Engineers Park, Noble Room, remains of the Hospital, Governor’s House, etc. The highest esplanade is known as the Macho del Castillo (the Castle’s Male) and this is the spot where the old citadel stood.The intermediate enclosure belongs to the most important premises concluded in 1580: King Phillip II’s Rooms, the ancient Guard’s Room facing the wide Forecourt, behind which are the remains of Santa Barbara’s Chapel, Guard’s Corps and Bulwark of the Queen.The lowest enclosure dates from the 18th century where we have the Bon Repòs Reveille, currently used as a parking site with a monument to the illustrious Alicante military man Félix Berenguer de Marquina, Captain General of the Philippines and Viceroy of New Mexico. The big coat of arms in white marble (18th century), over the doorway passing to the second enclosure, was originally found in the Royal Sea Consulate, a building destroyed by an explosion.

AYUNTAMIENTO DE ALICANTE Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 1. Moderno - Contemporáneo.Siglos XVIII, XIX - XX.

Palacio de estilo barroco del siglo XVIII que presenta la curiosidad de acoger en su interior la referencia desde la que se mide la altitud sobre el nivel del mar en cualquier lugar de España. Este punto de referencia, denominado “Cota Cero”, se encuentra en el primer peldaño de la escalera principal del edificio. Anexo al Ayuntamiento se ha construido recientemente un moderno edificio de dependencias municipales en cuya planta baja pueden apreciarse restos arqueológicos interesantes.

A baroque style palace dating from the 18th century which has the interesting feature of having in its interior the reference from which the altitude above sea level is measured anywhere in Spain. This reference point, called “Cota Cero” (zero level), is on the first step of the main stairway in the building. Recently, modern municipal buildings have been erected beside the town hall and interesting archaeological remains can be observed on the ground floor.

CONCATEDRAL DE SAN NICOLÁS Plaza Abad Penalva, s/n.Medieval islámico. Medieval cristiano. Moderno. Contemporáneo.Mediados del siglo X d.C. a mediados del siglo XI d.C., mediados del siglo XIII d.C. a fines del siglo XVI, y siglos XVII, XVIII, XIX y XX - XXI.

Iglesia en planta de cruz latina con los brazos poco acusados, capillas laterales comunicadas entre sí y una girola en la cabecera cuya formalización procede de la seriación radial de las mismas capillas de la nave. Preside el conjunto una potente cúpula casetonada en negativo a través de la cual entra la luz. La planta se duplica en el nivel superior al convertirse las capillas en tribunas que se comunican con la girola mediante una galería, reforzando una concepción del templo estática y cerrada. Las fábricas, construidas en sillería, se articulan con un orden toscano, logrando un interior escurialense cuya traslación al exterior se materializa con dos sobrias portadas manieristas.Destacan también las bóvedas de las dependencias anexas, las portadas renacentistas que les sirven de acceso y la barroca capilla de la Comunión.La capilla de la Comunión se inició medio siglo después de acabarse la colegiata y se configura como un pequeño templo de planta de cruz griega, cubierto por bóvedas de cañón en los laterales y cúpula sobre tambor de sección circular al interior y octogonal al exterior.


CONCATHEDRAL OF SAINT NICHOLAS OF BARIPlaza Abad Penalva, s/n.Mediaeval Islamic. Mediaeval Christian. Modern. Contemporary.Mid 9th century AD. to mid 11th century AD., mid 13th century to end 16 century, and 17th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.

A Latin cross church with slightly accused arms, side chapels linked between them and an apse in the head formalised by a radial series of the nave’s chapels. The ensemble is presided by a powerful dome with a vaulted roof in negative through which light comes in. The floor space is doubled in the upper level since the chapels become tribunes communicating with the dome though a gallery, enforcing a static and closed conception of the temple. The masonry, built with ashlars, is articulated in Tuscan order, achieving an El Escorial style interior, the translation of which to the exterior materialises in two sober manneristic porches.We must point out the vaults of the annex outbuildings, the Renaissance porches used as access and the Communion baroque chapel.The Chapel of the Communion was started half a century after the Collegiate was finished and it is a small Greek cross temple, covered by barrel vaults on the sides and a dome over a circular section tambour inside and octagonal outside.

BASÍLICA DE SANTA MARÍA Plaza Santa María, s/n.Medieval islámico. Medieval cristiano. Moderno. Contemporáneo. Siglos XIII – XVIII.

Es la iglesia más antigua de la ciudad, y data del siglo XIV. Se edificó sobre los restos de la mezquita mayor islámica de Alicante. Está formada por una sola nave, sin crucero, con capillas laterales entre los contrafuertes.Tras un incendio sufrido en el siglo XV tuvo que ser reconstruida. La fachada es barroca y está coronada por dos torres asimétricas construidas en los siglos XIV y XVIII respectivamente. Destaca la portada con una imagen de la Virgen, realizada por el escultor Juan Bautista Borja. En el interior destaca el altar mayor rococó del siglo XVIII y las capillas del Bautismo, de la Inmaculada y de la Comunión. En la Sala Capitular se encuentra una enorme pila bautismal del siglo XVI y un órgano barroco valenciano de 1653.

This is the oldest church in the city, dating back to the 14th century. It was built upon the ruins of Alicante’s biggest mosque and has a single, non-cruciform nave with side chapels between the buttresses.The basilica had to be rebuilt following a fire in the 15th century. Its baroque facade is crowned by two assymetrical towers - one built in the 14th century and the other in the 18th century. Highlights include the doorway with its image of the Virgin Mary by sculptor Juan Bautista Borja. Inside it boasts an 18th century rococo main altar and the Bautismo, Inmaculada and Comunión chapels. The chapterhouse contains an enormous baptismal font from the 16th century and a Valencian baroque organ from 1653.

El Museo de Bellas Artes Gravina (MUBAG) se inaugura el 14 de diciembre de 2001, ofreciendo por primera vez al público los principales exponentes del arte alicantino desde el siglo XVI hasta las primeras décadas del siglo XX.El Mubag se concibe de forma que el visitante deje de ser un mero espectador y adquiera una dimensión activa, acercándose al contexto histórico en las que las obras expuestas fueron creadas. Con ello, se pretende hacer más comprensible el entorno social y cultural que dio origen al arte alicantino durante los últimos 500 años, a la vez que mostrar la evolución del arte durante este tiempo.

The Gravina Fine Arts Museum (MUBAG) opened its doors on the 14th December, 2001, offering the public, for the first time, the main works of Alicantinian art from the 16th to the first decades of the 20th century.The MUBAG is conceived in such a fashion that the visitor will no longer be a mere spectator since it acquires an active dimension, getting visitors to approach the historical context in which the works exhibited were created. The aim is to re-create the social and cultural environment, which gave origin to Alicantinian art during the past 500 years, more understandable. At the same time, it shows the evolution of art throughout this long period.

Es el edificio civil más antiguo que se conserva en la ciudad. De estilo barroco, data de 1685 y se encuentra situado junto a la Basílica de Santa María. Inicialmente fue concebido como un almacén de cereales. Tuvo también funciones docentes -escuela de comercio- y acabó finalmente como museo. Sus salas acogen una importante colección de arte del siglo XX, formada principalmente por obras donadas por Eusebio Sempere. Cuenta también con obras de Chillida, Picasso, Dalí y Miró entre otros.

This museum is housed in the city’s oldest surviving civil building. In the baroque style, it dates back to 1685 and is located next to the Santa María basilica. It was originally designed as a cereals warehouse but was also used as a business school before finally becoming a museum.It houses an important collection of 20th century art mostly comprised of works donated by Eusebio Sempere. There are also works by Chillida, Picasso, Dalí and Miró, among others.

También cuenta con otras salas como la de Arqueología y Ciencia, Sala de la Cultura Moderna y Contemporánea, Sala de la Edad Media, Sala de la Cultura Romana, Sala de la Cultura ibérica y de la Prehistoria. The MARQ is a magnificent archaeological museum that makes a bet for renovation of the traditional exhibition system. It is a highly attractive museum from historical, didactic and, at the same time, fun and spectacular points of view. It is a genuine 21st century museum.The MARQ offers the possibility of discovering the archaeological method in different themed rooms: Field Archaeology Room, Urban Archaeology Room and the Underwater Archaeology Room. It is a museum setup making use of the most advanced exhibition methods, such as the use of sceneries, audiovisuals and interactive technology allowing the visitor to enter the past and to understand, in an attractive and didactic fashion, our history. It also disposes of other rooms such as Archaeology and Science, Modern and Contemporary Culture Room, Middle Ages Room, Roman Culture Room, Iberian Culture Room and Prehistory. It also includes activities, congresses, publications, etc. making it a live and rapidly expanding museum.We must not forget, of course, that it was granted the Best European Museum Award in 2004.

Diputación Provincial de Alicante / Provincial Council Building.

DIPUTACIÓN PROVINCIAL DE ALICANTE Avda. de la Estación; C/Tucumán; C/San Juan Bosco; C/Ferré Vidiella.Contemporáneo. Año 1928.

El edificio de la sede de la Diputación Provincial de Alicante, fue proyectado por el arquitecto Juan Vidal Ramos en 1928 e inagurado tres años más tarde. Eligió un tipo genérico de palacio de influencia italiana, filtrado por el barroquismo del palacio borbónico de Madrid.

This building houses the Provincial Council of Alicante. Projected by architect Juan Vidal Ramos in 1928 it was inaugurated three years later. He chose to design a generic palace of Italian influence, filtered by the baroque influence of the Bourbon palace in Madrid.

Edificio levantado a principios del siglo XX, bajo el proyecto del ingeniero de caminos Sr. Próspero Lafarga, encargado por la junta de Obras del Puerto.Estamos ante un ejemplo de la arquitectura historicista que integra detalles ornamentales neo-árabes.

The building was built in the early 20th century. It is a project by civil engineer Mr. Próspero Lafarga and it was ordered by the Port’s Board of Works.It is a fine example of historicist architecture integrating neo-Arabic ornamental details.


Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre.

La popular Tabacalera, creada a principios del S. XIX., conforma un conjunto arquitectónico sobresaliente del patrimonio urbano. Centro laboral de miles de trabajadores durante dos siglos, la fábrica forma parte del imaginario colectivo de varias generaciones de alicantinos. Con el traslado de la producción tabaquera al extrarradio, la antigua fábrica del centro quedó a disposición municipal. La campaña de restauración de tres de las naves de la fábrica, donde en la actualidad se alberga el Centro Cultural Las Cigarreras, ha terminado por convertirlas en una plataforma cultural de primer orden en España. Estos espacios funcionan ya como nave de Cultura Contemporánea, donde se ubica la Caja Negra, auditorio multifuncional para acoger actuaciones musicales y teatrales, nave de Patrimonio Cultural y Casa de la Música. A ello hay que añadir el Jardín Vertical, realizado al aire libre.

LAS CIGARRERAS CULTURAL CENTRE C/ San Carlos, 78Ph: (+34) 965 206 674Website: www.lascigarreras.es The popular tobacco factory was established at the beginning of the 19th century and is an outstanding example of the area´s architectural urban heritage. As a prime source of employment for thousands of workers over two centuries, it forms part of the collective memory for several generations of Alicante citizens. When tobacco production was transferred to the surrounding suburbs, the old factory was taken over by the town council. The restoration project for three of the factory warehouses, where Las Cigarreras Cultural Centre is currently housed, has transformed this place into a prominent Spanish cultural venue. These restored warehouses now serve as a space for contemporary culture as they house the Caja Negra (Black Box), a multifunctional auditorium for musical and theatrical performances; the Patrimonio Cultural warehouse, a centre for Cultural Heritage, and the Casa de la Música (House of Music). There is also a Vertical Garden outdoors.

El Museo Volvo Ocean Race, ubicado en el Puerto de Alicante, muestra los 40 años de historia y el presente de la competición deportiva más dura y más larga que existe, la vuelta al mundo a vela, cuya décimo segunda edición comenzará el 4 de octubre de 2014 comenzará en Alicante.Es un espacio moderno, dotado con elementos interactivos y juegos, ideal para disfrutar en familia. La visita incluye la Sala de Control de la regata, desde donde se siguen los barcos durante los nueve meses que dura la regata. La entrada es gratuita.

MUSEO DE AGUAS DE ALICANTEUbicado en uno de los lugares más típicos del casco antiguo, se trata de un espacio cultural y didáctico donde los visitantes podrán conocer la historia del agua en la ciudad. Junto al museo se encuentran los Pozos de Garrigós, aljibes utilizados para almacenar el agua hasta que dejaron de ser utilizados en 1898, fecha en la que se empezó a traer agua desde la cercana localidad de Sax.

FOGUERES DE SANT JOAN¿Qué decir de les Fogueres? No se trata de hacer una llama. Simplemente hay que acudir a Alicante con la llegada del verano y embriagarse de sensaciones, de sones musicales, de atronadora pólvora, de bellas mujeres, fuegos artificiales eternos, de noches en las que se vive la calle. Seguro que se integrará como un alicantino mas y paseará por sus calles sin descanso. Considerada recientemente una de las mejores fiestas europeas, les Fogueres de Sant Joan reúnen todos los alicientes para vivir una experiencia única. Entre calores, colores y sensaciones. Si decide visitarnos seguro que repite y se introducirá en un torbellino del que, con toda sinceridad, le costará permanecer ajeno.¿Y todo el embrujo de les Fogueres a qué sirve? Su centro son unos monumentos de materiales combustibles, bella artesanía, grandes dimensiones, estilizadas y barrocas composiciones, imaginativas formas, atrevidas disposiciones y divertida sátira. A partir del ingenio de los artistas foguerers a partir de la noche del 20 de junio se instalan en las calles y plazas de la ciudad casi un centenar de Fogueres, con sus equivalentes infantiles. Tras el paso del jurado, con la controversia asegurada, cuatro días después, en la noche del 24 arderán entre el júbilo colectivo, el calor de sus llamas y la frescura de la rociada del agua por parte de los bomberos ¿Existe contraste de sensaciones más placentero? Creemos que no, con sinceridad. Y si tienen duda... nada mejor que sentirla.

ROMERÍA DE SANTA FAZ Apasionada Romería; Entrañable PeregrinaSiempre en fecha variable y siempre también dos jueves después del Jueves Santo. En esa jornada todo Alicante se queda vacío y peregrina hasta el Monasterio de la Santa Faz. Mezclando el sentido religioso y la jornada lúdica a pleno aire libre se ofrece una de las romerías más importantes de la Comunidad Valenciana. Blusones de romero, cañas y zapatillas de deporte. Pero algunos cumplen sus promesas y discurren descalzos los cinco km. de distancia. Un sentimiento arraigado en la tradición alicantina, la veneración de la reliquia de la Santa Faz que custodia su Monasterio y al cual acudirán decenas de miles de personas, haga frío o calor –más lo segundo que lo primero-. No deje, al menos una vez en su vida, de participar de este peregrinaje colectivo.

THE PILGRIMAGE OF THE HOLY VISAGE (SANTA FAZ)A passionate pilgrimage; our beloved Lady PilgrimDates change every year but it’s always two Thursdays after Holy Thursday. Alicante remains empty during this day and leaves on a pilgrimage to the Santa Faz (Holy Visage) Monastery. Mixing the religious feeling and a day of outdoor entertainment we have one of the most important pilgrimages in the Community of Valencia. The pilgrims’ loose traditional shirts, canes and sports shoes. Nevertheless, some have to keep their “promises” and walk barefoot the five km. long distance. There is a feeling rooted in the tradition of Alicante, the veneration of the relic of the Holy Visage of Christ, which is kept in the Monastery. Tens of thousands of pilgrims gather whether it is cold or warm: although much more the latter than the former. Don’t miss out, at least once in your life, being a part of this collective pilgrimage.

SAINT JOHN’S BONFIRESWhat can we say about “les Fogueres” or “Bonfires”? It isn’t about making a flame. You must simply come to Alicante when summer begins and get filled with sensations, musical sounds, thundering powder, beautiful women, eternal fireworks and nights when streets are lived. You will, for sure, integrate as another Alicantinian and walk restlessly through its streets. Recently acknowledged as one of Europe’s best fiestas, the “Fogueres de Sant Joan” have all the ingredients necessary for a unique experience. You’ll be surrounded by warmth, colours and sensations. Should you decide to visit us you will surely come back and you will be introduced to a whirlwind from which, frankly, it will be very difficult to remain a stranger.What is the use of all the Fogueres enchantment? Its core is made up of inflammable material, beautiful handicraft, great dimensions, stylised and baroque compositions, imaginative shapes, daring dispositions and an amusing satire. The wit of the “foguerer” artists produces almost a hundred bonfires or “fogueres” all over the city’s districts with their equivalent “children bonfires”. After the jury passes, debate is always guaranteed. Four days later, they will burn on the night of June, 24 among collective joy; the heat of flames and the freshness of water sprayed by the firemen. Could anyone dream of such pleasing sensations? We firmly and sincerely believe you cannot…. should you have a doubt… nothing better than checking for yourself.

MOROS Y CRISTIANOS Entre Marchas y ArcabucesLa fiesta principal de la provincia adquiere en la capital una singular manifestación. La misma se ofrece en cinco zonas de la ciudad en fechas diferentes. Comienza por El Palamó (marzo), se prolonga en el barrio de San Blas (julio), ya en verano su presencia llega hasta la partida de El Rebolledo (julio), y los barrios del Altozano y José Antonio (ambos en agosto). Y tras esta quíntuple manifestación, será en la celebración del patrón de Alicante – San Nicolás de Bari- cada 6 de diciembre, donde una representación de los mejor de estas fiestas discurre por el centro de Alicante en su ya consolidada Entrada Mora y Cristiana. Así que en Alicante tenemos presencia en diferentes citas ¡No será que la capital no ofrece posibilidades de contemplar la cadencia de las escuadras pertenecientes al bando de la cruz o la media luna ¡Facilidades alicantinas!

MOORS AND CHRISTIANSBetween Marches and ArquebusesThe main fiesta in the province has its own unique version in the capital city. It is held in five different districts of the city. It starts in El Palamó (March), carries on Sant Blas (July). In summer it arrives to the country district of El Rebolledo (July) and to the districts of Altozano and José Antonio (both in August). After these five fiestas, it will be the celebration of Alicante’s patron saint, Saint Nicholas of Bari, on December, 6 where the very best representation parades throughout the centre of Alicante in its consolidated Moor and Christian Entrance. Therefore, you have several opportunities to admire the cadence of the troops belonging either to the side of the Holy Cross or to the Half Moon in the city of Alicante! This is how easy Alicante puts it for you!

SEMANA SANTALa Pasión frente al MediterráneoToda una semana de desfiles. Colorido mediterráneo en las vestas y recogimiento cristiano en los participantes. Más de medio centenar de pasos e imágenes. Un patrimonio digno de la más importantes de estas manifestaciones. Sobre todo un sentimiento de albergar algo muy nuestro. Desde las palmas del “Domingo de Ramos” hasta el encuentro de Ntra. Sra. de la Alegría con el “Resucitado”. Y entremedias la subida del “Morenet”, la majestuosa bajada de Santa Cruz, y el majestuoso paso de la Santa Cena. Y más hermandades, hasta veintisiete. Miles de personas que desfilan por la carrera oficial y las diferentes parroquias de Alicante. Y la ciudad, una vez más, se ofrece en receptora de miles de visitantes, integrados en nuestro pueblo como si fueran vecinos de la ciudad y que siempre acuden... una vez más.

HOLY WEEKPassion in front of the MediterraneanA full week of parades awaits you. There is a Mediterranean colour to the tunics and a Christian withdrawal in those parading. There are over fifty “pasos” or processions carrying floats or effigies. A heritage matching any other you’ll find in Spain. Over all, there is a feeling that we carry something which is ours. From the palms of “Palm Sunday” to the encounter of Our Lady “de la Alegría” (“of Joy”) with the Resuscitated Christ. In between, be present at the ascent of the “Morenet” (the “Dark One”), the majestic descent from Santa Cruz and the magnificent “paso” of the “Last Supper”. There are more “brotherhoods” summing up twenty-seven and thousands of people on procession throughout the official itinerary. All the parishes from Alicante attend. Whilst the city, once again, receives thousands of visitors who integrate in our city as if they were our lifelong neighbours and they always decide to come back… over and over again.


CARNAVALES Máscaras, Transgresiones y otras menudenciasEntre máscaras, pendones, peñas, dragones de fuego y disfraces transgresores, discurre el carnaval de la ciudad de Alicante. Libre y participativo, abierto y multitudinario en su principal manifestación, el “Sábado Ramblero”. La ciudad se decora de forma entrañable, varios de sus enclaves urbanos cobran otro colorido. Y miles de personas se disfrazan, disfrutan de actos como siempre divertidos y que con la benignidad del clima nos permiten olvidarnos del invierno. Bailes y verbenas, rincones rescatados de la monotonía, en una batalla contra las costumbres de la vida diaria. Toda una propuesta atractiva y al mismo tiempo colorista y elemental. Fuera de oficialidades, con sólo una máscara... cualquier ciudadano puede erigirse en “rey” de nuestro Carnaval.

CARNIVALSMasks, Transgressions and other triflesBetween masks, banners, groups of friends, fire dragons and transgressing disguises the carnival goes on in the city of Alicante. Feeling free and with everybody joining in, open and countless in its main expression, we have the “Sábado Ramblero” (Saturday at the Rambla). The city decorates in a treasured way and several of the city’s usual settings change colours. Thousands of people disguise and enjoy amusing acts whilst they forget winter and enjoy our warm climate. Dancing and fairs in the streets, corners rescued from dullness, in a battle against everyday life. An amazingly attractive suggestion that is both colourful and simple at the same time. Leaving all trace of officialdom wearing a mask… Any citizen can become the “king” of our Carnival.

FIESTAS TRADICIONALES Tradiciones y Rincones.... todo el añoPorrate - enero, Cruces de Mayo - mayo, Tabarca – julio, San Roque – agosto, Raval Roig – septiembreTambién varios rincones de la ciudad complementan su calendario de fiestas con citas caracterizadas por su alcance tradicional. El ciclo lo abre en enero el Barrio de San Antón con su tradicional porrate destacado por la multitudinaria bendición de animales. Ya en plena primavera las calles de Santa Cruz se llenan de flores con las vistosas Cruces de Mayo. Y en pleno verano la isla de Tabarca brindará su procesión marítima de la Virgen del Carmen, en agosto las calles de San Roque dedicará sus fiestas en torno a su patrón y ya en septiembre el Raval Roig celebrará su cita marinera en honor de la Virgen del Socorro. Complementarias, sencillas y atractivas, estas fiestas tienen el sabor de la vecindad en el corazón de una gran ciudad. TRADITIONAL FIESTASTraditions and corners … all year round“Porrate” Fair in January. Crosses in May. Tabarca in July. Saint Roque in August. Raval Roig in September.There are several districts in the city and they all have their own traditional fiestas. The cycle opens in the district of Saint Anton, with the traditional “porrate” or fair where a multitude of animals are blessed. In mid-spring the streets of Santa Cruz fill with the colourful Crosses of May. In mid-summer the island of Tabarca offers the procession in honour of the patron saint of seamen, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In August the street of Saint Roque celebrate the fiestas in honour of its patron saint and in September the Raval Roig district celebrates its sea fiesta in honour of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour. Complementary, simple and attractive, these fiestas keep all the flavour of neighbourhood in the heart of a great city. La naturaleza ha dotado a Alicante de una gran cantidad de playas que suponen uno de sus principales atractivos turísticos tanto por la calidad de sus aguas y arena como por lo bello de los parajes que las rodean. Año tras año reciben el reconocimiento de la Unión Europea con Banderas Azules que les confieren un merecido prestigio internacional que es corroborado por los miles de bañistas que las visitan en todas las épocas del año, siendo el verano la de mayor efervescencia de visitantes que disfrutan tanto de sus encantos naturales como de los servicios que les ofrecen (servicios sanitarios, hoteles, restaurantes y cafeterías, establecimientos de ocio, acceso mediante transporte público, etc). Durante la época estival, la mayoría de ellas cuentan también con servicios de vigilancia así como áreas lúdico-pedagógicas para discapacitados psíquicos y puntos accesibles para discapacitados físicos.

De entre las playas alicantinas destacan:

El Postiguet, situada en pleno casco urbano de la ciudad, a los pies del monte Benacantil y frente al Castillo de Santa Bárbara, está rodeada de un paseo marítimo con preciosas vistas de la bahía. Es una playa de arena fina y dorada ideal para tomar el sol, leer, practicar deporte o simplemente relajarse en cualquier época del año. La Albufereta, ubicada al noreste de la ciudad, entre la Serra Grossa y el yacimiento arqueológico del Tossal de Manises, se trata de una playa resguardada, perfecta para realizar deportes náuticos. Se puede acceder a ella en autobús o tram desde Alicante.San Juan es la playa más conocida de Alicante, de arena fina y dorada. Cuenta con siete kilómetros de longitud y casi cien metros de anchura. Es ideal para disfrutar de actividades náuticas y deportivas y cuenta con juegos infantiles, estando situada en una zona que cuenta con multitud de locales de ocio y restauración. Se puede acceder a ella cómodamente en autobús o tram desde Alicante.


Playas

Nature has endowed Alicante with a large number of beaches that are one of its main tourist attractions, both on account of the quality of the water and sand, and the beauty of the surrounding areas. Year after year, Alicante’s beaches receive European Union Blue Flag certifications, which bestow deserved international prestige upon them, confirmed by the thousands of swimmers who visit the beaches year-round. Summer is the busiest time for visitors, who enjoy both the beaches’ natural charm and the services offered (sanitary services, hotels, restaurants and cafés, leisure establishments, access via public transport, etc.). During the summer, the majority of the beaches also have lifeguard services as well as ludic-pedagogical areas for mentally disabled visitors and accessible points for physically disabled visitors.

Alicante’s most notable beaches are:

El Postiguet, situated right in the city’s urban district, at the foot of Mount Benacantil and opposite the Santa Bárbara Castle, this beach is surrounded by a maritime promenade with spectacular views of the bay. The sand is fine and golden and it is an ideal beach for sunbathing, reading, practicing sport or simply relaxing at any time of year.La Albufereta, located to the north-east of the city, between Serra Grossa and the archaeological site of Tossal de Manises, it is a sheltered beach, perfect for nautical sports. It can be accessed by bus or tram from Alicante.San Juan is Alicante’s best known beach. With fine, golden sand, it measures some seven kilometres in length and almost 100 metres in width. It is ideal for nautical and sports activities and has games for children. It is located in an area with a variety of leisure facilities and restaurants and can be comfortably reached by bus or tram from Alicante.


Beaches

La isla de Tabarca, situada a 11 millas náuticas de la ciudad de Alicante, es la referencia de las playas alicantinas. Se trata de la única isla habitada de la Comunidad Valenciana, aunque realmente es más que una isla. Se trata de un pequeño archipiélago que se compone además por los islotes de La Cantera, La Galera y la Nao. Su núcleo urbano está rodeado por unas murallas, que hacen que el conjunto haya sido declarado Bien de Interés Cultural.La excelente calidad de sus aguas y la biodiversidad de su fauna y flora han hecho que fuera declarada Reserva Marina del Mediterráneo.La isla de Tabarca posee una longitud de 1800 m. y una anchura de hasta 400 m. Sus costas albergaron en el pasado una base de piratas berberiscos y en el siglo XVIII el rey Carlos III ordenó levantar en ella un pueblo en el que alojó a varias familias genovesas que habían sido rescatadas del puerto tunecino de Tabarka.La isla dispone de un sendero que la circunda y desde el que es posible recorrerla disfrutando de sus paisajes y del avistamiento de la variedad de aves marinas que la pueblan.El desplazamiento hasta Tabarca puede realizarse por medio de barcos que parten desde el puerto de Alicante (Kon Tiki, salidas diarias de marzo a diciembre, cruceroskontiki.com), frente a la Explanada, con mayor o menor frecuencia en función de la temporada. Una vez allí lo que más destaca de la isla son sus playas de aguas limpias y cristalinas, tanto las de arena fina como las calas rocosas. A estos interesantes atractivos hay que añadir la propia visita al pueblo amurallado, dónde después del relax del mar, con aires marineros podrá disfrutar de una gastronomía única fruto de la combinación de arroz y de los productos extraídos del mar por los pescadores del lugar, así como el conocido caldero.El visitante puede alojarse en la propia isla debido a la apertura de establecimientos de alojamiento en los últimos años.


Reserva Marina de Tabarca

Tabarca Island, situated some 11 nautical miles from the city of Alicante, is a prime example of Alicante’s best beaches. It is the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, although it is in fact more than just one island. It is a small archipelago comprising the islets of La Cantera, La Galera and La Nao.The island’s centre is surrounded by walls, which have led to the island being declared a site of cultural interest. It has also been declared a Mediterranean Marine Reserve due to the excellent quality of its water and the biodiversity of its fauna and flora. Tabarca Island measures some 1,800m in length and 400m in width. In the past, its coasts were a refuge for Berber pirates and in the 18th century King Carlos III ordered that a town be built, where he housed various Genoese families who had been rescued from the Tunisian port of Tabarka.There is a path around the entire island, and following it is an ideal way to visit the island, enjoy its scenery and watch the variety of marine birds that populate it. To get to Tabarca, visitors can take a boat from the port of Alicante (Kon Tiki, daily departures from March to December, cruceroskontiki.com), opposite the Explanada. The boats operate with more or less frequency depending on the season. Once on the island, its clean and crystal-clear water beaches are outstanding; both those with fine sand and rocky coves. The walled town is another must-see, where, after relaxing by the sea, you can delight in unique dishes that combine rice with products freshly-fished by the local fishermen, as well as the well-known caldero dish.Visitors can stay on the island in any of the accommodations that have opened over the past few years.


The Tabarca Maritime Reserve

Envueltas por la cultura mediterránea, las tierras de la provincia de Alicante, constituyen sin duda alguna, cobijo de la buena mesa. The sun, beach and other charms that the Costa Blanca offers its visitors are complemented by a large number and variety of sports which can be enjoyed all year round due to Alicante’s mild climate. Nautical sports and golf take the prize for the sports that tourists can enjoy.

Alicante has a large number of renowned companies dedicated to providing services related to the practice of nautical sports such as yacht chartering, diving, windsurfing, sailing, rowing, etc. It is no wonder that Alicante was chosen as the headquarters of the start of the 2008, 2011, 2014 (start taking place on 11th of October) and 2017 series of the round-the-world regatta known as the Volvo Ocean Race, a port by port round-the-world sailing competition.

In addition, the city of Alicante has two 18-hole golf courses, as well as three other courses of similar characteristics, making up a very pleasant and interesting circuit.

La oferta de sol, playa y resto de encantos que ofrece la Costa Blanca a sus visitantes se ve complementada por una gran cantidad y variedad de deportes de los que es posible disfrutar durante todo el año gracias a la benevolencia del clima en la provincia de Alicante. Los deportes náuticos y el golf se llevan la palma de entre los que los turistas pueden disfrutar.

Alicante dispone de una gran cantidad de empresas de reconocido prestigio dedicadas a ofrecer servicios relacionados con la práctica de deportes náuticos como el chárter náutico, buceo, windsurf, vela, remo, etc. No en vano la ciudad de Alicante ha sido elegida sede de la salida de las ediciones 2008, 2011, 2014 (salida el 11 de octubre) y 2017 de la regata alrededor del mundo conocida como Volvo Ocean Race, una competición a vela por escalas alrededor del mundo.

Por otro lado, la ciudad de Alicante cuenta con dos campos de golf de 18 hoyos, complementados por otros tres campos más, también de similares características, y que conforman un circuito muy agradable e interesante.
