Santa Pola es un bello municipio turístico y pesquero donde el mar, las playas, los paseos marítimos, el paisaje y la gastronomía se unen para ofrecerte unos días inolvidables. Este municipio de pescadores tiene una población censada de 34.134 habitantes, aunque un gran número de residentes extranjeros disfrutan de Santa Pola la mayor parte del año.

Más de 300 días de sol al año, con sus días largos y luminosos y sus noches cortas y estrelladas, y una temperatura media anual que supera los 18ºC son motivos más que suficientes para que quienes nos visitan, quieran quedarse a vivir aquí. Su privilegiada situación, a tan sólo 10 km. del aeropuerto internacional El Altet, a 17 km. de Alicante y a 65 km. de Benidorm, también son buenos argumentos.

historia El mar ha marcado la historia de Santa Pola. Los íberos construyeron un recinto amurallado en el siglo IV a. C., para comerciar con los griegos de Focea. Los romanos potenciaron un puerto clave en el Mediterráneo para el comercio marítimo, el Portus Illicitanus, que contaba con todos los elementos de una ciudad: una factoría de salazón de pescado, almacenes, la Casa Romana de El Palmeral, mercado, necrópolis, etc.

Desde el s. XVI, el Castillo-Fortaleza y las Torres Vigía protegían a la población de los piratas berberiscos que se refugiaban en la isla de Tabarca. Una vez expulsados en el s. XVIII, se estableció definitivamente el núcleo de población que tomaría el nombre de Santa Pola.

History From time immemorial different cultures have left their archaeological remains in Santa Pola. The Iberians: a walled settlement from the 4th century BC. The Romans: a factory to make salted fish, some stores, a Roman Villa in “El Palmeral” and a port which was the key to maritime trade: the “Portus Illicitanus”.

From the 16th century the Castle and the watch towers were built to protect the population from the Barbary pirates, who took refuge in Tabarca Island. Once they were expulsed, in the 18th century, the centre of population named Santa Pola was established.

El Castillo-Fortaleza, de estilo militar renacentista, fue construido en 1.558 por encargo del Virrey de Valencia y Señor de Elche, D. Bernardino de Cárdenas, para la protección y defensa de los marineros frente a los ataques de los piratas y corsarios en nuestras costas en los siglos XVI y XVII. Actualmente, el Castillo-Fortaleza se ha convertido en un Centro Cultural en el que se desarrollan actividades de carácter cultural, festivo y religioso.

En su interior podemos encontrar el Museo del Mar, el Museo de la Pesca, El Baluarte del Duque de Arcos, la Capilla Virgen de Loreto y la Sala Municipal de Exposiciones.

The Fortress, a military Renaissance style castle, was built in 1558 by order of the Viceroy of Valencia and Lord of Elche, Mr. Bernardino de Cárdenas. It was used to protect and defend fishermen against the attacks of pirates and corsairs around our coasts (16th and 17th centuries). Nowadays, the Castle has become a Cultural Centre where different cultural, festive and religious activities take place.

Inside the Castle you can find the Maritime Museum, the Fishing Museum, the Duke of Arcos Bastion, the chapel “Virgen de Loreto” and the Municipal Exhibition Hall.

Derribado en 1872 para la construcción de la calle del Mue-lle, ha sido levantado de nuevo sobre la planta original. En la obra se han incorporado las más modernas técnicas y nuevos materiales, conformando un espacio volumétrico de doce metros de altura y luz cenital que proporciona una gran ma-jestuosidad al interior.

It was demolished in 1872 in order to build Muelle Street and then it was rebuilt on top of the original place. The most mo-dern techniques and materials have been incorporated, making a total height of 12m. and a zenith light which gives it a mag-nificent atmosphere inside.

Acuariothe aquarium

Es el más antiguo de la Comunidad Valenciana y posee 9 grandes acuarios que dan a conocer la flora y fauna del Mediterráneo. The aquarium is the oldest in the Valencian Community, and it includes 9 large glass tanks containing flora and fauna from the Mediterranean Sea. The Esteban Gonzalez is a boat museum that recreates the authentic and genuine life on board of the fishermen of Santa Pola.It’s situated in Constitution Square, around the Town Hall.Visitors can enjoy a guided tour, going to the most important places of the boat.Reservations on the Aquarium. Molino de La Calera the Mill of “la Calera”

Molino de viento construido en 1771 para abastecer de molienda de grano a la población. En sus inmediaciones se encuentra una calera, a la que debe su nombre. La Calera era utilizada para la producción de cal de forma tradicional.

A windmill was built in 1771 in order to supply the population with ground grain. In its surroundings there is a lime-kiln where it gets its name from. The Lime-kiln was used in the production of lime in the traditional way.

Restos Arqueológicos del Portus Illicitanus · Portus illicitanus archeological remains

El puerto romano, denominado por los geógrafos antiguos Portus Illicitanus (S. IV d.C.) se convirtió en una auténtica ciudad cuya actividad comercial queda demostrada por los restos arqueológicos encontrados: almacenes, una factoría de salazón donde se elaboraba la salsa “garum” y una necrópolis. Estos restos no son visitables.

The Roman port called Portus Illicitanus by ancient geographers (4th century AC.) became an authentic city whose commercial activity was demonstrated by the archaeological remains found: workshops, a salting factory where they made the sauce “garum”, a necropolis. These archeological remains can not be visited.

Restos Arqueológicos “Casa Romana del Palmeral” · roman Villa in “el Palmeral”

Se trata de una lujosa villa romana de carácter señorial construida en el siglo IV d.C. Presenta un patio peristilo de grandes dimensiones rodeado por un amplio corredor que da acceso a siete estancias -triclinium (comedor), oecus (salón) y cubicula (habitaciones)- decoradas con mosaicos geométricos policromos y pinturas murales.Esta mansión debió ser la residencia de una familia rica que desarrollaba su actividad en el Portus Illicitanus. Como el resto de personas adineradas de su época, daban una gran importancia a la decoración de las habitaciones con pinturas y mosaicos utilizando materiales como el mármol, el alabastro. Para evitar la oscuridad de las noches, alumbraban la casa con lámparas de aceite (candiles de barro o de bronce). Debido a su sentido religioso, en la vivienda destinaban un lugar sagrado donde rendir culto a los dioses, sobre todo a Venus, diosa protectora de los marineros.

This is a luxurious noble Roman villa constructed in the IV Century AD. It is made up of a large patio with columns surrounded by a wide corridor which gives access to 7 rooms-triclinium (dinning room), oecus (living room) and cubicula (bedrooms)- decorated with polychrome geometrical mosaics and mural paintings. This mansion must have been the residence of a rich family which was involved in the Portus Illicitanus.An aristocratic landowning family lived in this house. Like all rich people of the time, they placed great importance on the decorating of rooms, using materials such as marble, alabaster and making paintings and mosaics. In order to avoid the darkness of the nights, they lit up the house with oil lamps (made of clay or bronze). Due to their religiousness, they had a special place in the house where they worshiped the gods, above all Venus, the Goddess of the Fishermen.

Aljibes del Massapà · the Massapà Cisterns

Los aljibes del Massapá fueron construidos en el siglo XVIII para abastecer de agua a los habitantes de Santa Pola. Se trata de unos depósitos destinados a guardar agua potable procedente de la lluvia, conducida a través de canalizaciones procedente de laderas rocosas de la Sierra. El agua de lluvia se recogía y almacenaba en depósitos subterráneos, luego se transportaba en tinajas y se vendía a la población. En la Edad Moderna, con la expansión de los cultivos cerealísticos y el aumento demográfico, el aljibe se extendió por todo el territorio.

The Massapà cisterns were built in the 18th century for Santa Pola’s water supply and are tanks which function is to keep drinking rainwater. The rainwater was collected and storaged into underground tanks, then, this water was sold along the streets in large earthenware jars carried on carts. In the Modern Age, with the expansion of cereal dry farming and the subsequent population explosion, cisterns spread out through all the territory.

Su actividad se remonta al siglo IV a.C., aunque con distinto emplazamiento. Ha sido testigo de importantes acontecimientos históricos, como su ampliación en época del emperador Augusto, la salida de los moriscos del Arrabal de Elche tras su expulsión en 1609, y la visita de la Escuadra Real en la que viajaba Alfonso XII en 1877. Actualmente es uno de los puertos pesqueros más importantes del Mediterráneo español. Su principal actividad es la pesca, a la que siguen el embarque de la sal y la construcción de embarcaciones deportivas.No olvide visitar nuestro puerto y su bulliciosa actividad pesquera por las tardes de lunes a viernes.

Its activity goes back to the 4th century before Christ, although at that time its location was not the same as it is now. It has witnessed many important historical events, e.g., its extension during the reign of Emperor Augustus, the departure of converted Moors from the “Arrabal” of Elche after they were forced to leave in 1609, and the visit of Alfonso XII and the Royal Squadron (Escuadra Real) in 1877.Nowadays, it’s one of the most important Spanish ports in the Mediterranean Sea. Fishing is the main activity, but also commerce salt and pleasure boat building.Do not forget to visit our fishing port where you can observe the daily fish activity.

Se construyó en 1935 sobre una iglesia de principios del s. XIX derribada como consecuencia de un terremoto, y que en sus inicios fue un proyecto de Templo Academicista.

Built in 1935 upon a nineteenth-century church site, which was destroyed by an earthquake. This chuch was originally designed to be an Academic Temple.

Centro de Investigación Marina, fue restaurado aprovechando la estructura del cuartel de la Torre d’en Mig, antiguo cuartel de carabineros construido en los años 20. Plaza del Calvario · Calvario Square

Enclavada en una de las zonas más altas de la localidad, en este barrio de pescadores destaca la Ermita de inspiración árabe, construida a principios del siglo XX. A partir de 1967, las familias que vivían en el castillo se trasladaron a las viviendas sociales de este barrio.

A fishermen’s quarter sited in one of the highest areas of Santa Pola. We recommend you to visit the Chapel, built at the beginning of the 20th century designed on Moorish architecture. Families who were living in the Castle moved to this part of the town from 1967 onwards.


Torres vigía · Watch towers

Se construyeron en 1552 como sistema preventivo. Están emplazadas estratégicamente para avisar de la llegada del enemigo, de forma que se comunicaban entre sí, por medio de ahumadas de día y luminarias de noche. Son: Torre del Tamarit en las Salinas, Escaletes en la Sierra y Atalayola en el actual faro.

Built in 1552 as a defensive system. They were strategically placed to warn the population as soon as the enemy was in sight. The towers used to communicate with each other by means of smoke signals during the day and lights at night. The towers are: “Torre del Tamarit” in “Las Salinas”, “Escaletes” in the mountains and “Atalayola”, the present lighthouse.

Se halla emplazado en el extremo Este del Cabo de Santa Pola, sobre una antigua torre vigía del siglo XVI, denominada “Atalayola”, en un acantilado de 144 m. sobre el nivel del mar. Fue instalado en 1858 para la orientación de los barcos que por la noche navegaban por estas costas, sobre todo para los buques de la Armada, que en el año de su construcción fondeaban en la bahía de Santa Pola.

Located at the far eastern end of the Cape of Santa Pola, upon an old watch tower (16th century) called “Atalayola”, and by a cliff 144 metres above the sea level. It was built in 1858 to guide ships that sailed near the coast during the night, and especially ships of the Navy which used to anchor in the Bay of Santa Pola at that time.

La historia de Santa Pola está profundamente ligada al mar, por lo que sus fiestas giran entorno a él. Éstas son algunas fiestas de interés:

MARzO: El “Mig Any” de Moros y Cristianos tiene lugar el primer o segundo fin de semana del mes de marzo, como anticipo de las Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos que se celebran en septiembre.

MARzO/AbRIL: Durante la Semana Santa, las calles de la ciudad son testigos de las diversas procesiones a cargo de las diferentes cofradías. En estas mismas fechas, en el patio de armas del Castillo-Fortaleza se instala un Mercadillo Medieval.

JUNIO: En junio, como preludio del verano, tiene lugar la “Romería del Cap” en honor a la Virgen del Rosario.

JULIO: Cada 16 de julio el pueblo venera a la Virgen del Carmen, patrona de los pescadores, mediante misas, una ofrenda floral a los marineros desaparecidos, procesión y fuegos artificiales.

SePTIeMbRe: Del 31 de agosto al 8 de septiembre se celebran las Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos y Fiestas Patronales en honor a la Virgen de Loreto, con desembarco, embajadas, conquista y reconquista de moros y cristianos, desfiles, fuegos artificiales, ofrenda floral a la patrona, procesión, juegos infantiles y competiciones deportivas.

DICIeMbRe: El 10 de diciembre se conmemora la emotiva “Vinguda de la Mare de Déu de Loreto” a Santa Pola, que según la leyenda se remonta a 1643, cuando un barco pesquero con destino a otro puerto se vio obligado a recalar en Santa Pola por causa de un fuerte temporal; en el barco viajaba como pasajera una imagen de la Virgen de Loreto. Cuando amainó el temporal, el barco se hizo a la mar y tuvo que regresar a puerto dos veces más antes de poder partir, por lo que los tripulantes y autoridades entendieron que la Virgen de Loreto deseaba quedarse en Santa Pola.

fiestas · CelebrationsBecause of its background, the celebrations of Santa Pola, a seaboard town, are closely linked to the sea. These are some interesting celebrations:

MarCH: The “Mig Any” (Half Year) celebration of the Moors and Christians takes place the first or second weekend in March, as a preamble to the Moors and Christians Festival in September.

MarCH/aPril: At Easter, streets witness processions performed by different brotherhoods. On these days a Medieval Market is opened inside the parade ground of the Fortress-Castle.

June: In June, as a prelude to summer, we celebrate the “Romería del Cap”, a pilgrimage to honour the “Virgen del Rosario”.

July: The 16th July, Santa Pola, and especially sailors, venerate the “Virgen del Carmen” –fishermen’s patron saint– with masses, offerings of flowers for fishermen lost at sea, processions and fireworks.

SePteMBer: From 31st August to 8th September, we celebrate Moors and Christians and Festival in honour of the “Virgen de Loreto”, the patron saint of Santa Pola, with the landings, conquests and reconquering by the Moors and Christians, and enjoy parades, fireworks, floral offerings, processions, children’s games and sport competition.

DeCeMBre: The 10th December, according to a legend which goes back to 1643, Santa Pola commemorates the emotive “Vinguda de la Mare de Déu de Loreto” (the arrival of Our Lady of Loreto). According to the legend, in 1643, a fishing boat travelling to another harbour had to reach port in Santa Pola because of a big storm; on board, there was an image of the “Virgen de Loreto”. When the storm died down, the boat sailed away and had to go back to the harbour twice before being able to leave, so the crew and the authorities understood that the Virgin of Loreto wished to stay in Santa Pola.

GastronomíaGuisar: “Preparar los alimentos sometiéndolos a la acción del fuego”. Esta definición se podría aplicar perfectamente a cualquier guiso, pero no sería fiel reflejo de la cultura gastronómica santapolera, ya que en esta tierra de marineros, guisar es algo más que preparar unos alimentos; es poner a disposición de los comensales unas materias primas de una gran calidad, rehogadas con aceite de oliva, condimentadas con azafrán de hebra, ñoras, clavos, hierbas aromáticas de la Sierra, sal de sus salinas y mucho cariño, para redondear unos platos que, por su sencillez, resultan exquisitos.

Los guisos de esta tierra destacan por su colorido, y la base de los mismos son el PeIX De SANTA POLA y el arroz. Desde el aperitivo (salazones, gamba roja, marisco variado) pasando por el arroz (a banda, negro, con tropezones, arrós i gatet), los guisos (bollitori de rap, gazpacho de mero, caldereta de langosta), el caldero y los postres (hojaldres, helados, mantecados), nada dejará indiferente a quien coma en Santa Pola.

Cada atardecer, en la pescadería del Peix de Santa Pola y en los puestos de la lonja de pescadores, se puede adquirir el mejor pescado y marisco fresco recién desembarcado, para prepararlo en casa o pedir en un restaurante cercano que lo preparen a nuestro gusto.

GastronomyCooking: “prepare food by heating”. This definition could be perfectly applied by any cook, but it wouldn’t be true for Santa Pola gastronomic culture, because in this land of sailors, cooking is something more than preparing food; it means offering guests, food of high quality, fried with olive oil, seasoned with saffron thread, sweet red pepper, clove, aromatic herbs from the mountains, salt from its “Salinas” and made with lots of care, in order to achieve some dishes which, for their simplicity, are delicious.

The local cuisine is remarkable for its colour, and they are based on fish PeiX De Santa POla and rice. Not only snacks (salt-dried fish, red prawns, varied shellfish) but also rice (“arroz a banda” a kind of fish stew with rice, “arroz negro” rice cooked with squid and its ink, “arròs i gatet” a rice dish with carp), stews (“bollitori” which is a fish, vegetables and potatoes stew, “gazpacho de mero”: a stew made with grouper fish, “caldereta de langosta:” a stew made with lobster), the typical “caldero” and the desserts (puff pastry, ice-creams.) will surprise all who eat in Santa Pola.

Every evening, at the Fishmongers of “Peix de Santa Pola” and stalls in the fish market, you can buy the best fresh fish and seafood, just caught, to prepare at home or order at a restaurant nearby that prepares to you taste.

Parque Natural de Las Salinasthe Salinas (Salt Pans)

El Parque cuenta con una superficie de 2.470 hectáreas, ubicadas en la zona litoral de la Bahía de Santa Pola. La explotación salinera desde finales del siglo XIX, ha permitido la pervivencia de Las Salinas, humedal protegido como Parque Natural, y declarado “Zona de Especial Importancia para las Aves”, donde la presencia del flamenco y cigüeñuela es constante. La dinámica de Las Salinas consiste en hacer circular el agua marina por un circuito de balsas para obtener la concentración de sales como consecuencia de la evaporación. Las aves se alimentan de los peces e invertebrados que penetran en las salinas, mientras que la producción salinera se beneficia de la riqueza mineral aportada por la avifauna.

The park has an area of 2,470 hectares located in the coastal area of the Bay of Santa Pola. From the end of the 19th Century, the salt-works have made it possible to preserve the Salt Lakes, wetlands protected as a Nature Reserve and declared ”Region of Special importance for Bird life” where the flamingo and Stilts are regular residents. Its dynamics consist of circulating sea water ponds for salt concentration by evaporation. The birds feed on the fish and invertebrates whilst the salt production benefits from the mineral wealth provided by the birds.

Enclavada en el Parque Natural de Las Salinas de Santa Pola, la Finca Pantanet de Santa Fe está formada por grandes charcas o lagunas, protegidas entre carrizales y a las que llegan numerosos azarbes y acequias que fa-cilitan el drenaje de las mismas. En ellas encontramos especies altamente demandadas en la cocina local como el mújol y anguila, que son pescadas con artes de pesca tradicionales, como el trasmallo (rall) o la balanza.

RUTAS DE ECOTURISMO. Su privilegiada situación ha hecho que la Finca destaque sobre todo por la observación de especies como el flamenco, la cerceta pardilla, las fochas, etc. a lo largo de todo el año.

Los visitantes podrán disfrutar de un agradable paseo bordeando las charcas, escuchar los silencios y vislumbrar paisajes privilegiados como pocos en la provincia de Alicante.

Is located at the Natural Park of Salinas (Salt pans) in Santa Pola, The “FINCA EL PANTANET DE SANTA FE” consists of great lagoons or ponds surrounded by redbeeds, where several irrigation channels make easier their drainage. We can find there fish that are highly requested by the local cuisine, such as mullet and the European eel, which are caught using traditional fishing methods: “trasmallo” or “balanza”.

the Sierra and the Cape

The mountain is a cliff formation rising 144 m. above sea level. At its foothills is the Cape which marks the end of the Alicante’s bay. At its highest point is the “Torre Vigía Atalayola”, the current lighthouse.

Santa Pola’s cape is a unique specimen in Europe of Messinian coral reef, mainly made up of coral remains of the genus porites, stromatolites and halimeda seaweed.

This area has a very important environmental significance because it is one of the few examples of fossil reefs on the Mediterranean Coast, and contains a very interesting vegetation and fauna.

At its base is the 19th century former Headquarters of the Riflemen, known as “Torre d’en Mig”, in which lived 9 riflemen’s families. The Riflemen Corps was responsible for the coastal and borders safety and was created in order to “fight smuggling, prevent and attack it vigorously wherever it is produced and pursue it until its destruction”. Nowadays, these facilities house the Marine Research Centre.

La Sierra y el Cabo

La Sierra es una formación acantilada que se eleva a 144 m. sobre el nivel del mar. En sus estribaciones se encuentra el Cabo, que marca el punto final de la bahía de Alicante. En su punto más alto se encuentra la Torre Vigía Atalayola, el actual faro.

El Cabo de Santa Pola es un ejemplar único en Europa de arrecife coralino fósil de la era messiniense, formado principalmente por restos de corales del género porites, estromatolitos y algas halimedas.

Este espacio es de gran relevancia ambiental, ya que es uno de los pocos ejemplos de arrecife fósil del litoral mediterráneo, y alberga una interesante vegetación y fauna.

En su base se encuentra un singular edificio de principios del siglo XIX, el antiguo Cuartel de Carabineros, conocido como la Torre d’en Mig, en el que se alojaban 9 familias de carabineros. Este Cuerpo tenía como misión la vigilancia de las costas y las fronteras y fue creado “para hacer la guerra al contrabando, para prevenir o atacarlo vigorosamente en sus puestos de generación y perseguirlo en todas las direcciones hasta su exterminio”. Actualmente, su uso es el de Centro de Investigación Marina.

Los miradores de Gran Alacant están situados en la Avenida del Mediterráneo y en Avenida Escandinavia. Ambas zonas están acondicio-nadas para la contemplación del paisaje.

Desde el mirador de la Av. Mediterráneo se observa la belleza natural de las Dunas de los Arenales del Sol y la Bahía de Alicante, pudiéndose observar en los días más claros y nítidos Sierra Helada y el Peñón de Ifach, pun-to situado a 37 millas náuticas (68 km.) en línea recta.

Playas · BeachesLas playas de Santa Pola se caracterizan por su diversidad. Para todos los gustos y edades, con más comodidades, más variedad, más calidad de arena... El agua tiene una temperatura media de 24ºC en el mes de julio y de 18ºC en noviembre.

De entre los más de 11 kilómetros de playas de nuestra ciudad, se puede elegir la que más se adapte a cada persona: calas de fina arena y aguas cristalinas, al este; playas para toda la familia, con poca profundidad y tranquilo oleaje, al oeste. Para los que busquen zonas vírgenes, disfrutarán de las calas más solitarias y genuinas del cabo.

Playas de PonienteWest BeachesPlaya el Pinet · Pinet BeachSe sitúa junto al Parque Natural de las Salinas, en el extremo sudoeste del término municipal de San-ta Pola. Es una playa virgen a la que sólo se puede acceder a pie.

Longitud: 3.590 m. | Servicios: Equipamientos básicos por tratarse de una playa calificada no urbana para la protección y preservación de sus características medioambientales.

Located next to the Salinas Nature Reserve, on the southwest side of the Santa Pola municipal area. It is an unspoilt beach which you can only get to on foot.

Playa La Gola · la Gola Beach Playa a la que únicamente se puede acceder a pie desde la playa del Pinet o Tamarit.

Longitud: 1.710 m. | Servicios: Equipamientos básicos por tratarse de una playa calificada no urbana para la protección y preservación de sus características medioambientales. Existe una zona delimitada para la práctica del kitesurf. En esta playa se realizaba la mayor parte del contrabando en época posterior a la Guerra Civil.

It is a beach where you can only get to on foot from the Playa del Pinet or Tamarit.

length: 1.710 m. | Services: Basic equipment of a non-urban beach for the need to protect environmen-tal features. There is a designated area for practising Kitesurfing. This beach was where the greatest part of the smuggling was carried out after the Civil War.

Playa Tamarit · tamarit Beach Longitud: 830 m. | Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas. En su límite oeste se encuentra el antiguo muelle salinero construido en 1897. Las vagonetas cargadas con sal eran desplazadas por las vías tiradas por animales, una vez en el muelle, las vagonetas eran descargadas en los botes (Gabarras) que transportaban la sal a los barcos anclados en la bahía.

length: 830 m. | Services: Provided with all the same services found in an urban beach. On its western limit we find the old salt quay built in 1897. The wagons pulled by animals and loaded with salt were moved along the rails, once in the harbour, the wagons were unloaded into barges (Gabarras) which carried the salt to the ships anchored in the bay.

Longitud: 600 m. | Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas. Aquí se ubica una escuela de windsurf y zona náutica de patines.El inicio de la construcción en Gran Playa y Playa Lisa comenzó en la década de los 60.

Gran Playa (Playa Accesible) · Gran Playa Beach (accessible Beach)Longitud: 1.060 m. | Servicios: Cuenta con una zona náutica de windsurf y patines, un chiringuito, restaurantes y una rampa habilitada para el acceso a embarcaciones. Dispone de una zona de atención a personas discapacitadas.

En los inicios del siglo XIX, toma cierta entidad el fenómeno del veraneo en las playas de Santa Pola. En Gran Playa y Playa Lisa se ubicaban numerosas barracas de esparto y junco, que fueron la habitación más popular para los veraneantes, en su mayoría ilicitanos.

El “Baño de las Sirenas”, situado en el actual puerto, era Centro Social de reuniones para los veraneantes más pudientes.

At the beginning of the 19th century, Santa Pola became a summer resort for the first time. A great number of sheds made of esparto grass and rushes were located in Gran Playa and Playa Lisa. These sheds were most popular for people who spent their holidays here, most of whom came from Elche.

The so-called “Baño de las Sirenas”, which was situated in the present harbour, was like a Social Centre for meetings of the richest holiday-makers.

Fue galardonada en la distinción temática de “Ruptura de Barreras Arquitectónicas y Atención a Personas con Discapacidades” por la Fundación para la Educación Ambiental en Europa (FEEE).

En el año 1900 fondeó en la bahía de Santa Pola el buque de la armada inglesa “Theseus” con las comisiones astronómicas inglesa y escocesa para presenciar el eclipse de sol. Su personal practicaba en la misma playa, un juego llamado foot-ball, ante las miradas expectantes de los santapoleros. Por ese motivo Santa Pola fue el primer lugar de la Comunidad Valenciana por donde se introdujo y se expandió el fútbol.

It was awarded “the Breaking of Architectural Barriers and Attention to Disabled People” by the Foundation of Environmental Education in Europe (FEEE).

In 1900, the Royal Navy vessel “Theseus” anchored in the bay of Santa Pola together with the English and Scottish astronomical teams commissioned to observe the solar eclipse. Its crew played on the beach a game called “football”, while the citizens of Santa Pola watched them with surprise. This is the reason why Santa Pola became the first place in the Valencian Community where this particular sport began and then spread.

Calas Santiago bernabeu · Santiago Bernabeu Coves

En la Cala III existe una zona de varada con canal de entrada y salida al mar debidamente balizado.

Deben su nombre a D. Santiago Bernabeu (presidente del Real Madrid durante más de tres décadas) quien veraneaba en una casa situada en la avenida del mismo nombre. Estas calas de fondo rocoso, fueron regeneradas en 1990 con arena de fondos marinos cercanos.

In Cala III there is an area for the exclusive use of boats, pedal boats, etc, with an entrance and exit channel to the sea clearly marked by means of buoys.

These coves are named after Mr. Santiago Bernabeu (Chairman of Real Madrid for more than three decades), who spent his summer holidays in a house located in the avenue which now holds his name. These rocky coves were regenerated in 1990 with sand which was brought from the sea bed close by.

Playa varadero · Varadero Beach

Longitud: 475 m. | Servicios: Dispone de todos los servicios de las playas urbanas y zona náutica de patines. Galardonada desde 1987 con la Bandera Azul.

Esta playa debe su nombre al varadero que está junto a la misma. Anteriormente se denominaba “Playa de los Ingenieros” debido a que los ingenieros del varadero vivieron en sus inmediaciones. Además, era el punto de concentración para la tradicional celebración de la tarde de la “mona de Pascua”.

Its name comes from the “Varadero” (dry dock) which is next to it. Previously it was called “Playa de los Ingenieros” because the engineers who worked in the dry dock lived in the surrounding area. Moreover, it was the meeting point for the traditional celebration of what is known as “Easter Cake Afternoon”.

Santa Pola del Este es una urbanización situada entre la playa y las estribaciones de la Sierra que empezó a urbanizarse en 1963 consiguiendo poco después la declaración de Centro de “Interés Turístico Nacional”.

Santa Pola del Este is a housing development situated between the beach and the mountains. Its development began in 1963 which later received the certification of “Centre of National Tourist Interest”.

Calas de L’Aljub · De l’aljub Coves

Longitud: 830 m. | Servicios: Playa no urbana con equipamientos básicos. Chiringuitos en Bancal de L’Arena y Cala de la Ermita.

Están situadas en una zona de protección especial, de alto valor paisajístico y medioambiental.

El Cabo de Santa Pola, con sus 144 m. de altura, es un ejemplar único en Europa, de arrecife coralino de la era messiniense.

Playa de la ermita · the ermita Beach

Playa no urbana situada frente a la ermita de la Virgen del Rosario. Esta cala es la que delimita el término municipal de Santa Pola.

Isla de Tabarca Santa Pola es el punto más cercano de la Península a Tabarca, única isla habitada de la Comunidad Valenciana, situada a tan sólo 3 millas del Cabo. Desde el puerto de Santa Pola, parten embarcaciones durante todo el año hacia la isla, declarada en 1964 conjunto histórico nacional.

Tabarca es un lugar único que atrapa con su historia, haciéndonos recordar que inspiró a artistas y atrajo a piratas. De hecho, para acabar con la piratería, la isla fue fortificada y poblada por habitantes de la isla de Tabarqah (Tabarka) situada en Túnez. De esta época (s. XVIII) quedan las murallas, las puertas de San Gabriel, San Miguel y San Rafael, la torre defensiva de San José, la Casa del Gobernador (restaurada como hotel) y la Iglesia. En el extremo oriental de la isla se encuentra el faro, del s. XIX.

Es además un auténtico paraíso marino (reconociéndose en 1986 como la primera reserva marina del país) de aguas cristalinas y espectacular fauna y flora que hará las delicias de los amantes de la práctica del buceo. La línea de la costa es recortada, formada por pequeños acantilados de escasos metros de altura, con playas de cantos rodados y una única playa de arena con aguas transparentes.

tabarca islandSanta Pola is the closest point from the Peninsula to Tabarca, the only inhabited island in the Valencian Community, just 3 miles away from the Cape. Boats leave throughout the year from the port of Santa Pola to the island, which was declared a National Historic Area in 1964.

Tabarca is a unique place with its own history, reminding us once, it was a place of inspiration for artists aswell as a sanctuary for pirates. In fact, to stop piracy the island was fortified and populated with people from the isle of Tabarqah (Tabarka), in Tunisia. From this period, (18th. Century) the walls, the gates of San Gabriel, San Miguel and San Rafael, the defensive tower of San Jose, the Governor’s House (turned into a hotel) and the Church, all still survive. At the far east of the island you will discover the 18th Century Lighthouse.

It is a marine paradise (regonised in 1986 as the first marine reserve in the country) with crystal-clear waters, its magnificent flora and fauna turn this island into a dream place for scuba diving. The line coast is irregular, made up of low cliffs of only a few metres in height, with pebble beaches and with a unique sandy beach with clear water.
