Abrimos esta edición a pocas horas del comienzo de una nueva estación que coincide también con el comienzo de una nueva legislatura de gobierno para nuestros pueblos. En este Juego de Tronos que estamos viviendo estos días, nuevos y numerosos ejércitos populares irrumpen con fuerza ante la muestra de debilidad de algunos de nuestros representantes institucionales sumidos en casos de corrupción e impunidad.

Es precisamente la sensación de hartazgo de la población la que está poniendo en jaque a reyes y gobernantes que ahora empiezan a sentir que pueden ser juzgados y condenados por los ciudadanos y o cambian su estrategia o perderán el trono. No nos cabe la menor duda de que los tiempos están cambiando y de que vivimos un momento histórico que marcará el rumbo del futuro venidero. Estas batallas son el preámbulo de la gran guerra que se librará en las urnas el próximo invierno. En esa mezcla de miedo y esperanza vivimos estos días deseando que, sea quien sea el que tome el Trono de Hierro, olvide viejas rencillas o estrategias que ahondan en lo que nos hace diferentes, busque el beneficio como colectivo de pueblos y nos lidere como un solo ejercito frente a un enemigo común, la precariedad, acometiendo los cambios que ahora más que nunca necesitamos: LIBERTAD en la cultura, IGUALDAD en la política y FRATERNIDAD en la economía.

Toca pues esperar una temporada para ver cómo se desarrollan los acontecimientos, disfrutando mientras del verano en nuestra hermosa ciudad. Para ello, proponemos hacer uso de nuestro mapa de playas que nos invita a disfrutar de nuevos lugares. Les toca el turno de presentación, a quienes sin duda representan por número y por historia la principal colonia asentada en nuestra ciudad, los británicos. Para corroborar esto último, nuestro historiador nos vuelve a ilustrar con su artículo sobre como dos empresarios emprendedores británicos en pleno s.XIX vieron en un pequeño pueblo de agricultores potencial como pueblo productor de minerales, presentándose ya al mundo como un enclave con preciados recursos. Así pues Marbella fue minera antes que hostelera y de ahí surgió la piedra que luego fue pulida en el diamante que ahora es.

We open this issue within hours of the start of a new season which also coincides with the beginning of a new government legislature for our people. In this Game of Thrones that we are living these days, many new popular armies emerging with force against the sign of weakness of some of our institutional representatives immersed in corruption and impunity.

It is precisely the feeling of dissatisfaction of the population that is challenging to rulers who are now beginning to feel that they can be tried and convicted by the citizens, a demand for a change in their strategy or a threat of loosing their throne. We do not doubt that times are changing and that we are living a historic moment that will set the course of the coming future. These battles are the preamble of the great war that will be fought at the ballot box next winter. We live in that mixture of fear and hope these days, hoping that whoever is to take the Iron Throne, will forget old grudges or strategies that delve into what makes us different, find the benefit as a group of people and lead us as a single army against a common enemy, precariousness, undertaking the changes that we now need more than ever: FREEDOM of culture, EQUALITY in politics and FRATERNITY in the economy.

It is time to wait for a while to see how events unfold, while enjoying the summer in our beautiful city. Therefore, we propose to use our map of beaches that invites us to enjoy new places. It is the turn of those who certainly represent by number and by history, the main colony settled in our city, the British. To confirm this, our historian continues to illustrate us with his article about how two British entrepreneurs in the nineteenth century saw in a small village of farmers, a potential as mineral producers, appearing as new enclave of precious resources. Thus, Marbella was into mining before hospitality and hence the stone which was then polished into a diamond emerged.

-¿Cómo se establece la colonia inglesa en la Costa del Sol?El interés del Reino Unido hacia Andalucía viene desde hace mucho tiempo. España y Reino Unido mantienen relaciones diplomáticas desde hace más de ¡500 años! Ese interés fue aumentando con escritores como Hemingway, que documentó sus viajes por Andalucía e hizo más accesible la cultura andaluza a los lectores británicos

Hablando del interés actual, se podría decir que básicamente surge como el del resto de colonias de ciudadanos del norte de Europa: vinieron a la Costa del Sol principalmente en busca del buen clima aunque hay otros factores que también ayudan: el coste de la vida, que es más económico aquí que en el Reino Unido, o la gastronomía, por ejemplo.

- Desde cuándo puede decirse que se establece esta colonia?Desde finales de los 60 y sobre todo, principios de los 70. Al principio llegaban como turistas y muchos empezaron a mudarse, ya que les gustó lo que vieron. La colonia británica ha ido creciendo desde entonces. Hay ciertos aspectos históricos, como el fin de la dictadura o la entrada de España en la Unión Europea, que favorecieron el proceso.

- Cuál es su asentamiento mayoritario?La franja de costa que va desde Torremolinos a Marbella, incluyendo Estepona. Mijas es la localidad donde hay más ciudadanos empadronados, alrededor de unos 15.000.

En el cómputo general de Andalucía, entre todas las provincias hay algo más de 90.000 británicos registrados aunque podría haber miles más viviendo en la region durante el año.

- Cree que ha existido un intercambio entre ambas culturas, o simplemente se mantienen independientes? Hay mezcla?Depende mucho del lugar donde se asiente y de la edad de la persona que viene a vivir aquí, pero en lo general diría que ha habido una mezcla, lenta y no del todo completa, pero mezcla al fin y al cabo.

Hay ciertos lugares donde los ciudadanos británicos están realmente integrados y participan en la vida local como si fuesen uno más. Normalmente podría decirse que cuanto más alejada está la localidad de la costa mayor es la mezcla cultural. También es lógico pensar que los británicos que vienen a trabajar aquí tienen una integración social mucho más rápida que si se trata de jubilados.

How has the British colony established in the Costa del Sol?The UK interest in Andalusia comes from long ago. Spain and the United Kingdom have maintained diplomatic relations for more than 500 years! That interest increased with writers like Hemingway, who documented his travels in Andalusia and made Andalusian culture more accessible to British readers.

Speaking of current interest, one could say that basically this interest arises as many other colonies of citizens of northern Europe that came to the Costa del Sol mainly in search of good weather, although other factors also help: the cost of living is cheaper here than in the UK, or for example, the gastronomy.

- Since when has this colony been established in Andalusia?Since the late 60s and mainly, early 70s. Initially, they came as tourists and many began to move here, because they liked what they saw. The British colony has been growing ever since. There are certain historical aspects, such as the end of the dictatorship or the entry of Spain into the European Union, which favored the process.

- Where is the major settlement?The stretch of coast from Torremolinos to Marbella, including Estepona. Mijas is the town where there are more registered citizens, about 15,000.

In the overall result of Andalusia, there is more than 90,000 British registered in all the provinces, although there could be thousands more living in the region throughout the year.

- Do you believe that there has been an exchange between two cultures, or do they simply remain independent? Is there a mixture?It mainly depends on where the settlement is and the age of the person who comes to live here, but in general I would say that there has been a mixture, slow and not quite complete, but a mixture after all.

There are certain places where British citizens are truly integrated and participate in local life as if they were one more. It could normally be said that the further away from the coast line, the greater the cultural mix. It is also logical that the British who come to work here have a much more rapid social integration than if they are retired.



Sin embargo, la tendencia es que los ciudadanos británicos se agrupen y creen sus propias urbanizaciones. A algunos les choca culturalmente la vida de los españoles, pero el mayor obstáculo para su integración es, sin duda, el idioma. Hay que tener en cuenta que no se trata solo de multimillonarios, sino también de personas jubiladas: albañiles, mecánicos, profesores o abogados que vienen a descansar después de toda una vida de trabajo. En esas circunstancias, pocos tienen ganas de someterse al esfuerzo de aprender una lengua desconocida.

- Qué piensa que ha aportado una a la otra?Sin duda diría que ha habido un intercambio y una mezcla cultural a lo largo de los años que ha enriquecido a ambas culturas. Hay numerosos ejemplos.

Al vivir tanto tiempo una cultura junto a la otra, las costumbres se pueden llegar a entrelazarse, especialmente en esas localidades donde mayor es el número de foráneos. Por ejemplo se puede notar una gran mejora en la forma en que se atiende a los clientes, tanto a nivel institucional como a nivel privado, en los lugares donde ambas culturas se han mezclado. Sin duda los británicos han disfrutado mucho de la calidad de la comida andaluza y de la capacidad que tienen los andaluces de vivir todo con mucha intensidad.

- Cree que la crisis actual perjudica este intercambio, o, por el contrario, lo favorece?Obviamente la crisis actual no favorece directamente el intercambio cultural, ya que debido a la crisis muchos británicos han decidido volver a su tierra por diversas razones. No hay que olvidar que la crisis ha sido a nivel global, no solo en España.

La misma crisis en otras ocasiones ha favorecido la integración, por ejemplo en la forma de asociación de empresas británicas con españolas, ya que ha agudizado el ingenio de los comerciantes.

- Como británica, cuales son los valores que destacaría de Andalucía?El sol, el estilo de vida relajado y el “arte” de los andaluces a la hora de vivir y disfrutar de cada momento, especialmente del presente. La extensa y variada gastronomía es otro aliciente importante, así como la variedad cultural que presenta.

-Cuál es el trabajo de un consulado?En el consulado tratamos de ayudar a ciudadanos británicos que se ven inmersos en un problema. Desde a alguien que

necesita un pasaporte de emergencia para volver al Reino Unido porque se lo han robado a familiares de ciudadanos fallecidos. Hay muchos casos en los que no podemos ayudar por diversas razones; en esos casos intentamos dirigirlos al lugar adecuado donde pueden obtener la ayuda que necesiten, ya sean las autoridades locales o alguna asociación que ayude a gente con problemas.

En un día normal en el consulado podemos tratar con arrestos, hospitalizaciones, defunciones, personas desaparecidas, casos que necesitan ayuda social, etc.

- Cómo trabaja con las autoridades españolas?Mantenemos una estrecha relación con las autoridades españolas. Solemos estar en contacto a diario con oficiales de la Policía Nacional o la Guardia Civil y con trabajadores sociales de hospitales y prisiones. Para nosotros es muy importante cuidar esos contactos ya que va en beneficio mutuo de ambas partes.

- Qué consejos daría a aquellos ciudadanos británicos que piensen trasladarse del Reino Unido a Andalucía?Lo principal es que hagan una investigación exhaustiva del lugar al que se van a trasladar antes de hacerlo y que tomen la decisión consensuadamente. También es muy valioso que se informen de los servicios que van a tener disponibles en su nuevo lugar de residencia y de qué deben hacer para poder acceder a esos servicios. Una vez lleguen al lugar en cuestión es importante que hagan un intento por integrarse en la vida local y aprender el idioma, ya que ello será muy beneficioso a la larga y les dará muchos recursos a la hora de poder solucionar problemas.

However, the tendency is that British citizens are grouped together and create their own developments. Some are culturally shocked about the life style of the Spaniards, but the biggest obstacle for integration is undoubtedly the language. Keep in mind that it is not just about billionaires, but also retired persons: masons, mechanics, teachers and lawyers who come to rest after a lifetime of work. In these circumstances, few are eager to undergo the effort to learn an unknown language.

- What do you think each culture has contributed to each other?I would definitely say there has been an exchange and a cultural mixture over the years that has enriched both cultures. There are numerous examples.

For two cultures to live side by side for so long , customs can intertwine together, especially in those locations where there is a greater number of foreigners. For example, you can notice a big improvement in the way we serve customers, both institutionally and in a private level, in places where both cultures are mixed. Certainly the British have enjoyed the quality ofAndalusian food and the ability of locals to live everything with great intensity.

- Do you think that the current crisis has damaged this exchange, or, on the contrary, it has encouraged it?Obviously the current crisis has not directly encouraged the cultural exchange, because many Britons have decided to return to their homeland for various reasons. Do not forget that the crisis has been global, not only in Spain.

The same crisis in the past has favored the integration, for example in the form of associations of British and Spanish companies, as this has sharpened the wit of traders.

As a British, what are the values that stand out of Andalusia?The sun, relaxed lifestyle and the “art” of Andalusian people in the way they live and enjoy every moment, especially the present. The extensive and varied cuisine is another important incentive, as well as, the cultural diversity.

-What is the work of a consulate?In the consulate we try to help British citizens who find themselves in trouble. From someone who needs an emergency passport to return to the UK because it has been stolen from the families of deceased citizens. There are many cases where we can not help for various reasons; in such cases we try to direct them to the right place where they can get the help they need, either local

authorities or an association that helps people with problems.

On an average day at the consulate we can deal with arrests, hospitalizations, deaths, missing persons, cases that need social assistance, etc.

- How do you work with the Spanish authorities? We maintain a close relationship with the Spanish authorities. We tend to be in daily contact with officials of the National Police or the Civil Guard and social workers from hospitals and prisons. For us, it is very important to look after those contacts as it is of mutual benefit for both parties.

- What advice would you give British people who are thinking of moving from the UK to Andalusia? The main thing is to make a thorough investigation of the placewe are going to move to before you do it and take a decision by consensus.

It is also valuable to obtain as much information as possible of the services that are available in the new place of residence and what to do to access those services. Once they have arrived, it is important to make an effort to integrate into local life and learn the language, since this will be very beneficial in the long run and an advantage when problems need to be solved.

La última tecnología en cirugía refractiva llega a Hospital Quirón Marbella

Con el láser excimer y el láser de femtosegundo se corrige la miopía, la hipermetropía y el astigmatismo sin los riesgos de un mal corteTambién se soluciona la presbicia y la vista cansada mediante cirugía láser, lentes intraoculares multifocales y lentes ICLEl servicio de oftalmología de Hospital Quirón Marbella pone en marcha una unidad de cirugía refractiva con la última tecnología para corregir la miopía, la hipermetropía y el astigmatismo con láser excimer y láser de femtosegundo. Según el doctor Nabil Ragaei Kamel, jefe del servicio de oftalmología, “ofrecemos técnicas indoloras, sin cuchilla y sin ingreso hospitalario, adecuando los más sofisticados medios diagnósticos y de tratamiento a las necesidades del paciente”.

Técnica láser excimer con femtosegundoEl láser femtosegundo evita el uso de cuchilla microqueratomo. “En lugar de cortar una capa superficial de la córnea mediante un proceso manual con cuchilla, se emplea un láser de última generación, el femtosegundo, que elimina los riesgos de un mal corte”, expone el jefe del servicio de oftalmología.

Esta técnica combina la exactitud y el control en la eliminación del tejido corneal mediante el láser excimer y las ventajas de aplicarlo directamente en el interior de la córnea en lugar de la superficie corneal, como se hacía anteriormente. “Se consigue la remodelación de la superficie corneal que corrige definitivamente los defectos de la refracción ocular empleando cirugía láser de principio a fin, sin cuchilla”, añade el doctor Nabil Ragaei Kamel. Es una técnica con sensor de movimiento, de manera que “se extrema la seguridad de la intervención”.

Además, es un procedimiento que se realiza de manera ambulatoria y con anestesia tópica (solo colirio).

The Department of Ophthalmology of Hospital Quirón Marbella has opened a Refractive Surgery Department using the latest technology to correct short-sightedness, long-sightedness and astigmatism

employing Excimer and Femtosecond Laser. The team also employs laser technologies, as well as multifocal intraocular lens implants and ICL lenses in the surgery for presbyopia or eye fatigue. Doctor Nabil Ragaei Kamel, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, states that “we apply painless techniques, without the use of a blade and without hospital stay required, adapting the most sophisticated diagnosis and treatment methods to the patient’s needs”.

Excimer Laser technique with femtosecondThe Femtosecond Laser technology avoids the use of microkeratome blades. “Instead of cutting through a superficial layer of the cornea by means of a manual process using a blade, a latest generation laser system is employed, i.e. the femtosecond, which eliminates the risks of a bad cut”, states the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology.This technique combines the preciseness and the control in the removal of corneal tissue using Excimer Laser and the advantages of applying it directly to the interior of the cornea instead of the corneal surface, as it was traditionally done. “We can remodel the corneal surface which definitely corrects eye refraction issues employing laser surgery from start to end, without blade”, states Doctor Nabil Ragaei Kamel. This technique uses a movement sensor, so “safety of this surgical procedure is extreme”. Additionally, this procedure is applied at outpatient surgeries using topical anaesthetics (only eye drops).

No fue el azar, eran tiempos de colonización, de extracción de riquezas en lugares menos desarrollados. Los protagonistas, británicos, el objetivo, la magnetita, materia prima ideal para los entonces más avanzados métodos de fundición. La Europa del Norte avanzaba rápido en la vorágine industrializadora, mientras Marbella era una ciudad pequeña donde la agricultura compartía espacio con la Ferrería de El Ángel, que llegó a ser pionera en el país con los altos hornos. Dos hermanos y empresarios de Glasgow, William y Samuel Senythe Malcolm, vieron las extraordinarias posibilidades del filón y la oferta a la baja de una ferrería que había menguado en su capacidad extractiva por la escasez progresiva de la madera como combustible y el consiguiente encarecimiento del precio del metal lo que provocó su pérdida de competitividad. Su propuesta era simple, explotar la mina del Peñoncillo, transporte en tren del mineral y embarque para su traslado a las Islas, por lo que se antojaba imprescindible la creación de una infraestructura que cambiaría el paisaje y que aún permanece en la memoria de la ciudad, un pequeño tren y un muelle de hierro.

José Ortega Munilla, padre del filósofo Ortega y Gasset, de visita a Marbella en 1891 describía la actividad fabril, En la playa prolonga sus tramos de hierro sobre el mar, el magnífico muelle construido por la sociedad inglesa que explota las ricas minas de hierro. Desde el puntal del muelle, el espectáculo es admirable. Dilátase en amplia curva el pueblo y los cortijos, que con sus blanquísimas casas llenan los rellanos que preceden a las estribaciones

de Sierra Blanca. En último término eleva sus crestas azuladas y grises la cordillera, y allá arriba se ven los movimientos de tierra que indican la existencia de las minas. El anteojo marino nos enseña allí, entre aquellas asperezas y fragosidades, el hormigueo de la población minera, y en el campo cristalino del catalejo destácanse las figuras de algunos hombres que trabajan en picos inaccesibles, colgados de la cintura por tirante cable, como arañas pendientes de su hilo.

En 1872, una vez finalizadas las obras, la explotación fue cedida a la Marbella Iron Ore Company and Limited y la ciudad comenzó a convivir con la minería, a recibir mano de obra de los pueblos cercanos, el representante de la compañía, Miguel Calzado, fue nombrado vicecónsul de Gran Bretaña, se solicitó un lugar de enterramiento específico para los británicos no católicos y el forastero comenzó a formar parte de la vida cotidiana. Sin embargo, en 1916 el filón se agotó y con dificultades continuó la extracción hasta 1931 cuando cerró definitivamente.

Con el tiempo el muelle de hierro fue desmantelado, las vías del tren difuminadas por el abandono y lo que pudo ser una colonia británica no fue más que un casi. No queda otro rastro que una pequeña calle nombrada Carril de la Mina y grandes fracturas a los pies de Sierra Blanca, que nos recuerdan que si la magnetita no se hubiera agotado Marbella seguiría siendo minera y no la capital internacional del turismo de sol, playa y golf tan al gusto de los británicos del siglo XXI.

It was not random, it were times of colonization, of extraction of natural resources in less developed areas. The protagonists, British, objective, the magnetite, ideal row material for then ,the most advanced method of founding. Northern Europe progressed rapidly in the vortex industrialization , while Marbella was a small town where agriculture shared spaces with the foundry of El Angel, who became a pioneer in the country with blast furnaces.

Two brothers and entrepreneurs from Glasgow, William and Samuel Senythe Malcolm saw the extraordinary possibilities of the profitable business and the underbidding of a foundry that had dwindled in its extraction capacity by progressive scarcity of wood as fuel and the consequent increase in the metal price which caused the loss of its competitiveness.

Their proposal was simple, exploit Peñoncillo Mine, rail transport of the mineral and shipping it to the islands, so the creation of an infrastructure that would change the landscape seemed essential and still remains in the memory of the city , a small train and an iron pier.

Jose Ortega Munilla, father of the philosopher Ortega y Gasset, in a visit to Marbella in 1891 described the manufacturing activity:…” At the beach extends its iron tranches over the sea, the magnificent pier built by the English company which exploits the rich iron mines. Since the piers strut, the show is admirable. Dilated in a wide curve, town and farms, with it very white houses fill the landings leading

up to the foothills of Sierra Blanca. At the end limit, raises the blue and gray crests of the mountain range and up there are seen earthworks that indicate the existence of the mines . The marine telescope shows us there, among those rough and fastness’s, the tingling of the mining population, and in the field of the Spyglass crystal the figures of some men working in inaccessible peaks, hanging from the waist by taut cables, as spiders pendent on its thread.

In 1872, after completion of the works, the exploitation was transferred to the Marbella Iron Ore Company and Limited and the city began to coexist with mining, receiving labor from nearby villages, the representative of the company, Miguel Calzado, was appointed vice consul of Great Britain, a specific burial place for no Catholic British was requested, and foreigners became part of everyday life. But in 1916 the mine was exhausted and with difficulties the extraction continued until 1931 when it finally closed.

Over the time the iron pier was dismantled, the railway blurred to abandonment and what could have been a British colony was no more than an almost. JAZMÍN. De acuerdo a la medicina ayurvédica, el Jazmín es una planta que representa compasión y amor y ha sido utilizada en la salud para colaborar a desarrollar inmunidad y reducir fiebres. Su fragancia dulce es conocida por ser uno de los afrodisíacos más poderosos. Si decides tenerla dentro de tu casa, ubícala en una ventana que apunte al sur.

BAMBÚ. Es una especie de pasto extremadamente versátil y tiene una larga historia en sanación. Conocida por reducir flemas y fiebres, el Bambú es una planta milenaria y una probada fuente de medicina. También es un símbolo de la suerte en el Feng Shui y se dice que incrementa la flexibilidad mental, el crecimiento espiritual, la buena salud, la alegría y la riqueza. Una gran ventaja es que el bambú dura mucho tiempo y no requiere de mayores cuidados.
