E= h
K= h –w
Kmax= h –w0

Si < 0 no podremos extraer
V0= h /e –w0/e

nuestro día a día

X-RAY TUBES
X-rays own their name to Roentgen, responsible of their discovery and not able to identify
them to any other known radiation.
They are electromagnetic radiation with between 10-9 –10-11 m
They are commonly produced in
relaltively simple devices known as
X-Ray tubes .
The electrons are accelerated with
a high voltage and allowed them to
collide with a metal target. X-rays
are produced when the electrons are
suddenly decelerated upon collision
with the metal target

X-RAYS
X-rays are produced when the electrons are decelerated upon collision with the metal
target; these x-rays are called brehmsstrahlung and correspond to the continuum
contribution in the spectrum.
If the bombarding electrons have sufficient energy, they can knock an electron out of an
inner shell of the target metal atoms. Then electrons from higher states drop down to fill the
vacancy, emitting x-ray photons with precise energies determined by the electron energy
levels.
These are called characteristic x-rays, and are
emitted from heavy elements.
The characteristic x-rays emission (two sharp
peaks in picture) occur when vacancies are
produced in the n=1 or K-shell of the atom and
electrons drop down from above to fill the gap.
•x-rays produced by transitions from the n=2 to
n=1 levels are called K- x-rays
• those for the n=3->1 transiton are called K-
x-rays.

X-RAYS
Lets describe the brehmsstrahlung contribution. Accelerated charges give off
electromagnetic radiation, and when the energy of the bombarding electrons is high enough,
that radiation is in the x-ray region of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is characterized by a
continuous distribution of radiation which becomes more intense and shifts toward higher
frequencies when the energy of the bombarding electrons is increased. The curves below
correspond to tungsten targets bombarded with electrons of four different energies.
IMPORTANT FEATURES
• For each electron energy there is a well
defined min
• The shape of the bremstrahlung spectra
depends (slightly) on the target nature and
also on the applied V
• But min only depends on V, being the
same for different targets. This critical value,
cannot be explained with the clasical theory

EXPLANATION
• X-rays are low-energy photons
The electron with kinetic energy E1 suffers a
collision with a heavy target. The energy lost in
the interaction is converted in radiation (x-ray)
energy is conserved
The interaction between the electron and the target is driven by the
Coulomb field. The electron transfer momenta to the target, loss
energy (deacceleration) and emits radiation. Being the target so
massive we can ignore this energy transfer and represent the energy
of the photon as
h =E1-E2 with wavelength hc/ =E1-E2
•Note that the amount of energy that the electron losses in the collisions could be different
each time.
• An electron will stopped only after many individual collisions
EXPERIMENTOS DE FISICA CUANTICA
X-Rays D. Cortina
The continuum spectra are the result of many
electrons radiating many discrete photons with
wavelengths ranging from min to infinitum.
Each value correspond to a different energy
loss during the interaction
In the case that the electron losses all its energy
in a collision E2=0 and then
hc/ min =E1
E1 can be expresed as eV, and in consequence eV=hc/ min mi = hc/eV
min correspons to the total conversion of the electron energy into radiation .
Clearly if h 0 min 0 and we found the agreement with the clasical theory.
min is a purely quantum phenomena
Bremstrahlung can be interpreted as an inverse photoelectric effect

X-RAYS DIFRACTION
Is a procedure used in cristallographie that determines the diffraction pattern of a
monocrystal by a “polychromatic or white” x-ray beam (i.e: bremstrahlung).
It was the first x-ray diffraction method used and has been largely used in many material
physics labs.
The Laue method is mainly used to determine the orientation of large single crystals
while radiation is reflected from, or transmitted through a fixed crystal.
The wavelength of X-rays is typically 1 A , comparable to the
interatomic spacing (distances between atoms or ions) in solids.
THE LAUE METHOD
The Bragg angle is fixed for every set of planes in the crystal. Each set of planes picks
out and diffracts the particular wavelength from the white radiation that satisfies the
Bragg law for the values of d and θ involved

THE LAUE METHOD
In the transmission Laue method, a film is placed behind the crystal to record beams which are transmitted through the crystal.

• varies with the scattering angle , being the peak always
at the same position
• The scattered radiation with ’ cannot be explained with the
classical theory that proposes atoms in target will oscillate up
and down the incident wave frecuency yielding the initial wave
frecuency.
• Compton explains the existence of this peak considering the
incident radiation a set of photons, each colliding individually
with electrons of the target and transfering to it part of the
original energy E’< E
EXPERIMENTOS DE FISICA CUANTICA
Efecto Compton D. Cortina
• Combining the result of two of the famous 1905 papers of Einstein, one can relates
the momentum of the photon p with the wave length
photoelectric effect E=h = hc/
special relativity theory E=pc
hc/ =pc
p=h/
In the situation of radiation scattered from a rest electron and considering some energy
transfer from photon to electron, the scattered photon should have larger wave length
(or less E).
You can follow in the text books a detailed study of this interaction , considereng both
particles as “relativistic” billiard balls (E and P conservation)

Efecto Compton D. Cortina
Compton formula
Compton wavelength ~ 0.0024 nm
IMPORTANT FEATURES
• The Doppler shift only depens on the
scattering angle (never on the initial radiation )
• It varies from 0 ( =0) for peripheral reactions
(the incident photon is almost no deflected)
to 2h/mc (for =180) for the case of frontal
collision (the scattered photon comes back
following the incident path)
• electrons eventhough inside the target are considered to be free. This is valid considering
that the kinetic energy gained during the collision is significantly larger than their Binding Energy
EXPERIMENTOS DE FISICA CUANTICA
Efecto Compton D. Cortina
With visible light ( ~400-700 nm) the effect is very small
With X-rays ( ~ 0.07 nm) the effect is visible
We have not yet explained the presence of a peak at incident wavelength position.
It corresponds to those cases where either the electron is deeply bound or the incident
energy is low enough and the electron cannot scape the atom-target. In this case the
collision happens between the photon and the atom itsel m has to be replace by the
atomic mass (~ 22.000 the electron mass for the graphite C) in the Compton Formula
and the shift becames really small (not even possible to measure)
This process is known as Thomson scattering (the physicist that developed the clasical
theory for the X-Ray dispersion). and corresponds to a singular case in which classical
and quantic results agree.
Indeed Thomson scattering dominates in the electromagnetic spectra range with large :
Visible, microwave , radio... .
