Inquisitive individual who thrives in challenging situations as this allows him to think outside the box and generate creative and effective solutions to problems. A graduate from the University of Texas at El Paso with the goals of attending graduate school for a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology. All past mentors and employers would argue he is a thorough and hard working individual who carefully plans his tasks to deliver the most effective and concise results as possible. He is an avid reader, as he believes in self-‐education. Holds skills in:
• Careful and detailed planning of experiments • Ability to thoroughly document results for future reference • Molecular cloning (PCR, digestion, bacterial transformation) • Protein analysis via western blotting technique • Cell culture • BSL-‐2 training; ability to deal with pathogens such as Influenza, Mycobacterium
bovis and other potentially pathogenic microbes • Leadership and mentoring other trainees
Education The University of Texas at El Paso: Bachelors in Science (B.S) in Microbiology. Class of Spring 2015
Professional Experience Research work: May 2012-‐Present Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (Summer 2012): An El Paso Community College initiative designed to involve students in research for the course of 2 months to compile data for a poster presentation at the end of the summer in a scientific symposium at UTEP. Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement, RISE program (Fall 2012-‐Summer 2015): Dr. Aguilera from the University of Texas at El Paso directs a program dedicated to immersing students in undergraduate long research experience with the chance to attend ABRCMS and other national conferences, so as to expand their opportunities and experience in the professional scientific community. Past Employers/Mentors: Dr. Manuel Miranda: Neuroscience. Summer 2013 Dr. Hughes Ouellet: Pathogenic Microbiology. Fall 2013 to Fall 2014 Dr. German Rosas-‐Acosta: Virology and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Fall 2014 to Spring 2015
Key achievements and Skills developed: -‐Designing of various DNA constructs; knockouts, overexpression, complementation.. -‐Generation of a Mycobacterium tuberculosis knock out (∆glbN) and the characterization of the phenotypes associated with the knock out
-‐Best poster award in ABRCMS national conference -‐Generated data showing discrepancies in a protein-‐protein interaction between a viral Influenza protein (NS1) and host cellular factor (SUMO; Small ubiquitin-‐like modifier). -‐ Engineering of a plasmid designed for neuronal cell transfection -‐Participation in COURI, an undergraduate poster presentation event both under BRIDGES and RISE programs -‐Autoradiography (radioactive work) and multiple western blots from GST-‐Pulldowns -‐Proficiency in the maintain of a scientific notebook to detail the process and results of a particular experiment for the important aim of interpreting this data later for publications -‐A great speed in bench work without sacrificing quality and maintaining efficiency -‐Successful troubleshooting of experiments
