Parish Mission Statement

Declaración de la Misión de Nuestra Iglesia St. John Neumann

“To strive together to be Christ for each other and our neighbor.”

“Esforzarnos juntos para ser Cristo el uno para el otro y para nuestro prójimo.”

A Letter From Fr. Sandy

Financial Contributions

Offertory will be reported next week.

Dear Parishioners,

This weekend, I am back from some time away. I’m grateful for the opportunity the past couple weeks to rest and reconnect with family and friends. I hope you are finding the same kinds of opportunities during summer’s slow-down.

One area of activity that summer has not slowed down this year is the ongoing work of our “Growing Together in Faith” Campaign. Summer is not the usual time for a campaign, but we found ourselves with the need to utilize summer months for a major portion of our quiet, “Advance Gift” phase. Volunteers have been working hard approaching families of the parish to make a personal appeal (having given themselves already) to invest in this game-changing goal for St. John’s.

With over 2000 families in our parish, it will not be possible to approach all families in this way before the culmination of the campaign. We hope to reach out to at least 450 households before we invite everyone who has not yet contributed to make a gift in August during the “Community Gift” phase. The main event of this phase will be a Commitment Weekend when we gratefully receive these gifts. After all Masses, we will have a way for families to make their pledge. The date for this weekend is August 25-26. This puts the culmination of the campaign after school starts once again, something we hope helps in our success.

Here are a couple ways you can help with this effort:

If you are called this summer to receive a visit from a volunteer to present an “ask” for a gift, please be open to the visit. You will not be asked to make a pledge at that visit; rather, it is meant to be a chance to explain the goals of the campaign and how a gift can be made. The volunteer will arrange

for the return of your pledge card about a week later—this can be returned in a sealed envelope to ensure privacy.

We are also seeking volunteers to help with the Community Gifts phase. These volunteers receive training in advance of Commitment Weekend. Their main work will be to staff tables during Commitment Weekend after all Masses, when families can complete cards to make a gift. We will need between 25 and 35 volunteers after each Mass. The more volunteers we can recruit, the easier it will be to ensure no one has more than one or two Masses to staff. If you are called about this kind of opportunity to volunteer, please be open to helping. If you are not called but are interested in volunteering, contact me ([email protected]) or Veronica West in the campaign office ([email protected]) to let us know.

We are more than forty percent to our goal of $5 million with approximately one hundred gifts given thus far. I am profoundly humbled by everyone who has given and volunteered thus far. I offer my thanks to them and to everyone who will give and volunteer. Together, we are growing in faith, and we can reach new heights as a Catholic parish by what we are hoping to accomplish in this campaign.

With best wishes and prayers,

Fr. Sandy McDonald

The Fuego volcano eruptions in Guatemala have resulted in the evacuation of villages and the rescue workers trying to reach those villages. The death toll is currently 70 people, but it is possible that thousands remain unaccounted for in the communities that are located on the foothills. Rebuilding and recovery will be difficult and long for this impoverished community. Please consider giving to the Fuego volcano victims in our Second Collection this weekend. If you choose to write a check, please write "Guatemalan Volcano" in the memo field. Thank you for your generous response to those in great need.

Second Collection Today for Volcano Victims

To everyone who participated in this year’s Vacation Bible School: the children, teens and adults. We had a fantastic time learning Bible stories, crafts, games, snacks, KIdVid and of course, songs, skits and dancing!!! The families also donated several large boxes of baby supplies for Birthright. And the Knights of Columbus and Columbiettes provided a great cookout for the families of all the participants.

We still have a few music CD’s left. They are $8. Contact Cherie Smith at 788-3252, ext. 321 or [email protected] for more information.

A Prayer by Fr. Sandy

O God of Jesus Christ, We remember… the Middle Passage’s brutal transfer to Gadsden’s Wharf, the human beings become chattel on the auctioneer’s block, the overseer’s whip and the backbreaking work, a war to break the chains and an Exodus with hope of a promised land, the promise of freedom stolen by Jim Crow, the lynchings, marches, and crosses that made a mockery of faith in your Son, monuments to a lost cause, the fire hoses, jails, dogs, and beatings of resistance, the mowing down of youth at South Carolina State University, the hatred that shattered welcome at Mother Emanuel. We remember the injustices of the past, and we know that these injustices are still with us in the poverty, the incarceration, the disparities of education, jobs, and income that have caused people of color in South Carolina to remain behind. In our remembering, O God, may Jesus Christ, who suffered the injustice of torture and lynching because of his stand for the good of others, be our guiding star to help us resolve to work for justice in our state and to heal the wounds of racism that afflict us so deeply. For from his death and resurrection, we draw the hope that injustice, sin, and even death are not ultimate. For you, our God, are a God of life, of life to the full for all your creation, and we claim our trust that if we are faithful to the ways of your kingdom, you will allow its justice to break forth into our times and in our state. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Father Alexander “Sandy” McDonald

The Heat is Here!

Please be on the look-out for heat health problems/emergencies. Check on neighbors and friends.

Heat Stress: A heat-related illness caused by the body’s inability to cool down properly. If your body can’t cool down correctly, the high temperature can damage your brain or other vital organs. Several things can affect the body’s ability to cool itself during extremely hot weather. When the humidity is high, sweat will not evaporate as quickly, preventing the body from releasing the heat quickly. Other conditions, such as age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn, and medicines/drugs/alcohol may all affect the body’s ability to cool itself.

Risk Factors: Anyone can develop heat stress. However, the following groups have higher risks for developing heat related health issues:

-Infants and children up to 4 years old -People 65 years old and older -People who are overweight -People who are ill or on certain medications. Prevention: Heat-related health issues are preventable if you follow a few simple steps. -Stay in an air-conditioned area during the hottest hours of the day. If you don’t have air conditioning in your home, go to a public place such as a shopping mall or a library to stay cool. Cooling stations and senior

centers are also available in many large cities for people of all ages. -Wear light, loose-fitting clothing -Drink water often. Don’t wait until you are thirsty. -Avoid unnecessary hard work or activities if you are outside or in a building without air-conditions. -Avoid unnecessary sun exposure. When in the sun, wear a hat, preferably with a wide brim. Air conditioning is the strongest protective factor against heat-related illness. Exposure to air conditioning for even a few hours a day will reduce the risk for heat-related illness. Information from the CDC

Youth Ministry Update

Hello St. John Neumann! Your youth minister just wanted to update all of you of some of the events that have happened and will be happening this summer. June 11 – June 15 middle school and high school students helped with the Vacation Bible School and VBS aftercare program. It was a successful week of watching over and having fun with the young kids. I am very thankful for the help our youth could provide. This summer we are planning events during the usual Sunday Night Youth Groups time period, but they are scheduled for every other Sunday. That way we can give a longer break to the high school youth during their summer break. The upcoming dates for Sunday Night Youth Groups are: June 24, July 1, July 15,July 29. Please mark your calendars and join us! We are also hosting a High School Small Group during the summer starting on June 27th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM and continuing weekly on Wednesday nights. It is a chance for high school youth to grow deeper in their faith through prayer, Bible studies, and recreation with other youth. We look forward to seeing you!
