Diego Rivera wasborn December 8, 1886,in Guanajuato inMexico, to Diego andMaria BarrientosRivera. Being a family ofrather modest means, they lived in Guanajuatountil 1892, when theymoved to Mexico City. Atthe age of ten DiegoRivera was doing well inschool, and, passionately fond ofdrawing from an early age, started takingevening painting classes at the SanCarlos Academy. Diego’s father was a municipalcouncellor in Guanajuato, and was aliberal and anticlerical man. Diego’s twoaunts, who lived with the family, wererather religious. Diego was interested inmilitary issues, and he was especiallyfascinated by the Russian army and theconflict it was facing;the Tsar and theOrthodox Churchversus MarxistRevolutionaries. In 1907 Diego gota travel grant, andwent to Spain. There he travelledaround, and he alsowent to France,Belgium, andEngland. It wasin these years Diego

Rivera became a revolutionary himself, and felt the call of his country. His friend,David Sternberg, the Soviet People’sCommissar of Fine Arts had invited himto Russia, and Diego was tempted to go,but in 1921 he returned to Mexico instead.

In addition to his painting activities, which by now was focused increasinglyon murals, Diego Rivera participated inthe founding of the Revolutionary Unionof Technical Workers, Painters andSculptors in the autumn of 1922, and laterthat year he joined the MexicanCommunist Party. In the years thatfollowed, Diego was engaged by The

(Soviet) Revolution, as his signature on themural The Agitator illustrates:

In the autumn of 1927 Diego took a trip tothe Soviet Union, as a member of an officialdelegation of Mexican Communist Partyfunctionaries and various workersrepresentatives, to take part in the tenthanniversary celebrations of the OctoberRevolution. Diego’s interest in the WorkersMovement clearly show in the mural below, which shows Frida Kahlo, Diego’s third wifeand longtime (1929 to 1954) partner, handingout guns to workers who have decided tofight:

New Film on Archbishop EmeritusPatrick Flores Released

American Archbishop Patrick F. Flores (born 1929) became thefirst Mexican American to rise to a high rank in the RomanCatholic Church in the United States. When appointedArchbishop of the Archdiocese of San Antonio in Texas, hebecame the head of the largest provinces of dioceses in thecountry. Throughout his life and career, Flores was greatlyadmired and well-liked, as he supported civil rights causes, actively helped the poor, and sought to bring together peopleand leaders of other faiths.

His education thus salvaged,Flores diligently applied himselfto his studies and completed athree-year program in two years. He managed to accomplish thiseven while studying Latin on theside. To earn money for his familyand himself, Flores worked in acantina, picking up empty beercans from the floor and sweepingup cigarette stubs. The workingenvironment coupled with hischores compelled him to want tomake the whole world a cleanerand more habitable place, andhe felt the best way he could dothat was by becoming a priest.

Intent on following his calling, after he graduated from Kirwan,Flores entered St. Mary’sSeminary in La Porte, Texasin 1949. He later attended St.Mary’s Seminary in Houston. He never wavered in his decisionto become a priest. Once againdisplaying academic ambition,he completed eight years’ ofseminary education in seven. When he completed his work atthe Houston seminary, he tookhis holy vows. He was ordainedinto the Catholic priesthood at St.Mary’s Cathedral in Galvestonon May 26, 1956, by BishopWendellin J. Nold. Now known as Father Flores,he celebrated his first mass atthe Guardian Angel inPasadena, Texas. Shortlyafterward, he was assigned to theDiocese of Galveston-Houston, where he served as an

In 2005, Galán Incorporated,a film production company, announced that it wanted toproduce a documentary aboutRoman Catholic BishopPatrick F. Flores. The chosensubject matter seemed highlyappropriate for a motion picture,as Flores is a charismatic figurewhose life and legacy offer thekind of drama and inspiration thatmakes for a compelling narrative. Flores rose from humblebeginnings to become America’sfirst Mexican-American CatholicBishop. In his early life, Floreswas a migrant worker and cantinacustodian but, after he enteredthe priesthood, he rose to thehighest levels in the churchhierarchy. Along the way, hiscareer was fil led withaccomplishment, controversyand even danger.

Early Life and Career Flores, the seventh of ninechildren born to Patricio andTrinidad Fernandez de Flores, was born on July 26, 1929, inGanado, Texas. Floresattended Ganado ElementarySchool, Pearland ElementarySchool and Christian Brothers’Kirwin High School inGalveston, Texas. In 1946,when he was in the tenth grade,Flores wanted to drop out of highschool when his father becameill and could not work. He waspersuaded against that route, however, when a nun convinceda bishop to finance his educationat the Catholic school.

assistant pastor in severalparishes.

Humble ActivistConcerned with the plight of thepoor and oppressed, Floresbegan displaying activistinclinations in the early 1960s,when he directed the ChristianFamily Movement in theGalveston-Houston diocese andthe Bishop’s Committee for theSpanish Speaking, a ministrythat encouraged bilingualcongregations. At the end of thedecade, in October 1969, Floresjoined forty-seven other Hispanicpriests to establish PADRES, anorganization that draws attentionto the problems of Hispanics inthe church. In between, hereceived his first pastorate, at theGuardian Angel Parish inPasadena, in 1963; in 1967,Flores became pastor of St.Joseph-St. Stephen Parish inHouston. In May of 1970, Pope JohnPaul VI made Flores theauxiliary to the archbishop ofSan Antonio. Later that year, hebecame a bishop, the firstMexican American to attain thathigh a position in the RomanCatholic Church. Beingbilingual, and coming from a poorbackground himself, Floresmanaged to develop a strongrelationship with theparishioners.

Also in May of 1970, Floreswas appointed chairman of theTexas State Advisory Commit-

ttee to the U.S. Commission onCivil Rights, and in July hebecame national chaplain for theLeague of United LatinAmerican Citizens. Even in such positions ofrespect and power, Floresremained humble and continueddirecting his activities towardhelping the less fortunate. In1972, he co-founded theMexican-American CulturalCenter in San Antonio andserved as its honorary chairman. He then helped form theNational Foundation ofMexican American Vocationsand the National HispanicScholarship Fund, whichhelped hundreds of young peopleto obtain a college education. The following year, he helpedraise more than $20,000 forearthquake victims in Mexico, and then he joined picketers ata supermarket who wereprotesting the stocking ofnonunion lettuce and grapes. Flores’ activities did not gounnoticed. Time magazinenamed him “an emerging leaderof America” in 1974. He gainedmore media attention in 1976when he helped establish“Telethon Navideno” (NativityTelethon), a broadcast event heldon the first Sunday of Decemberto raise money for indigent Latinofamilies. Proceeds paid foremergency rental finances, utilities, and medication for singlewomen with children, the elderly, the unemployed and the sick. By this time, Flores had spent

twenty years in the priesthood. However, as humanitarian as hisaims were, his activities were notwithout personal danger. InAugust of 1976, he visitedEcuador to attend a conference, but he ended up being held atgunpoint by the country’s armyfor 28 hours with 56 otherprelates.
