Hunting snake Judith Wright / Australian poet (31 May 1915 – 25 June 2000) StandarSun-warmed in this late season’s graceunder the autumn’s gentlest skywe walked, and froze half-through a pace. The great black snake went reeling by. Head down, tongue fl ickering on the trailhe quested through the parting grass, sun glazed his curves of diamond scaleand we lost breath to see him pass. What track he followed, what small foodfl ed living from his fi erce intent,we scarcely thought; still as we stoodour eyes went with him as he went. Cold, dark and splendid he was goneinto the grass that hid his prey.We took a deeper breath of day, looked at each other, and went on. The Cockroach

Kevin Halligan Canadian poet and writer (born in 1964)

I watched a giant cockroach start to pace,Skirting a ball of dust that rode the fl oor.At fi rst he seemed quite satisfi ed to traceA path between the wainscot and the door,But soon he started to jog in crooked rings,Circling the dusty table leg and back,And fl ipping right over to scratch his wings –As if the victim of a mild attackOf restlessness that worsens over time. After a while, he climbed an open shelfAnd stopped. He looked uncertain where to go.Was this due payment for some vicious crimeA former life had led to? I don’t know,Except I thought I recognised myself.

Pike

Ted Hughes English poet (1930–1998)

Pike, three inches long, perfectPike in all parts, green tigering the gold.Killers from the egg: the malevolent aged grin. They dance on the surface among the fl ies.

Or move, stunned by their own grandeur,Over a bed of emerald, silhouetteOf submarine delicacy and horror.A hundred feet long in their world.

In ponds, under the heat-struck lily pads-Gloom of their stillness:Logged on last year’s black leaves, watching upwards.Or hung in an amber cavern of weeds

The jaws’ hooked clamp and fangsNot to be changed at this date:A life subdued to its instrument; The gills kneading quietly, and the pectorals.

Three we kept behind glass,Jungled in weed: three inches, four,And four and a half: red fry to them-Suddenly there were two. Finally one

With a sag belly and the grin it was born with. And indeed they spare nobody. Two, six pounds each, over two feet longHigh and dry and dead in the willow-herb-

One jammed past its gills down the other’s gullet:The outside eye stared: as a vice locks-The same iron in this eyeThough its fi lm shrank in death.

A pond I fi shed, fi fty yards across,Whose lilies and muscular tenchHad outlasted every visible stone

Of the monastery that planted them-

Stilled legendary depth:It was as deep as England. It heldPike too immense to stir, so immense and oldThat past nightfall I dared not cast

But silently cast and fi shedWith the hair frozen on my headFor what might move, for what eye might move. The still splashes on the dark pond,

Owls hushing the fl oating woodsFrail on my ear against the dreamDarkness beneath night’s darkness had freed,That rose slowly toward me, watching.

The three poems above show us how simple creatures can leave us in mere states of awe. Enjoy them, feel the terror, thjr thrill, the wonder.

“Go with the ow”In psychology ow is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity. It can apply to many areas of life, including work, sport, music-and education. “Science” is a word that conceals a great deal of data. For starters, it is not of Anglo-Saxon or Germanic origin, but of

Latin origin. Because of this, its etymology contains ideas we do not think about when we picture the word in our minds while

reading or saying it.The word in Latin being “scientia” it does mean “knowledge”,

yet the root of the word is the verb “scindere” and this last word means “to cut, to separate, to divide”. Now take a second

off the page to consider what it really is to know. (…) Ready? What did you come up with? Well, yes, to know is to detect

differences, attributes, similarities and the varied aspects of something, thus, the knowledge that the word science stands

for is knowledge that stems from separating, dividing and discerning.

In Spanish, the verb whose root is part of the word in question would be “escindir”. Still, when we say or read this last lexical item, we do not associate it with thinking and classifying but of cutting or separating material objects. Science, however,

is about classifying notions, dividing concepts, taxonomizing entities and distinguishing features.

Whatever the language, science is about knowledge, and the latter, in turn, is about establishing differences amongst

things. Our capacity to think allows us to come up with the right decisions when we teach ourselves to determine how things, people, relationships, political parties, attitudes and gestures differ from each other. My invitation, then, is for us to become the scientists of our lives and to start making decisions based

on our prior distinction of what’s right and wrong.Discerning allows us to choose well.

GREEN KIDS TIPS FOR VEGETABLE GARDENS

1) Vegetables can be grown on most soils (light, medium or heavy) provided they are well drained. Choose an open site, where plants can receive maximum sunlight.

2) Crops are grown on the flat, in drills or on raised beds. Choose the system that suits you best. Or maybe a combination of all three.

3) Vegetables are normally either sown directly where they are to mature (known as direct drilling) or else the seed is sown into a nursery bed or modules (multi-celled tray) and later on the young plants (transplants) are planted out into their final quarters.

Page 11: Lcb home page · MERCURY 650°C / -170°C 3. Venus is the 1st/2nd planet in the solar system. 4. A year in Venus is 116 days & 18 hours long / 112 days & 2 hours long 5. What amount

1111

4) A common mistake is to sow seed too thickly. As the seeds germinate and the young plants come through they should not crowd each other. The depth to which seed should be sown will vary depending on the size of the seed.

5) Transplanted crops are usually sown under protection (plastic tunnel, glasshouse or garden frame) into a container of some sort. These containers could be a seed tray, small pot or a multi-celled tray.

6) Keeping annual records outlining the crops grown, planting distances, varieties, dates of sowing, transplanting or harvesting etc. will add to the owner’s store of information year on year.

7) Vegetable growing can get confusing due to the large number of different types of vegetable that are available and the many different ways of growing them. If you are a beginner you’re better off to start small and grow something easy like cabbage, onion sets or beetroot. Look after them well and you’ll get a harvest!

Jurassic World This fi lm is about dinosaurs. It is awesome because it has action, romance and a lot more. This fi lm was fi lmed on an island which is a place where you have a lot of space. The Clan I saw The Clan. The movie is about a family that kidnapped people, borrowed money and killed them. The house was where the people were kidnapped. The public phone was a device that could be used to call families. Arquimides Puccio was the man who thought out the plans. They used different parts of the house where they could keep people kidnapped. The car was a machine that they used to transport the people to the house. Ricardo Monoukian was a millionaire who was kidnapped. Jail was the place where Alejandro and Arquimides ended.Sofía Quiroga

Dead in the Shadows

This fi lm is about a man that kills people. That happens when his family is not in the house. He kills a lot of people and he wins a lot of gold. Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans is a very good action movie. It’s about Perseo, a god who lives in Argos. One day the city wants to get the power the gods have. Hades, the god of hell, is the one who begins to attack Argos, and Perseo has to defeat him. With a lot of soldiers and a goddess, he kills Medusa, the monster that serves Hades. Then Perseo defeats Krachen, another monster that wants to eat Casiopea, and he saves the village where he was born.Agus Duro

Wreck it Ralph I think the movie is very funny because the characters tell jokes. That movie is perfect. In that movie there is a place where there are a lot of sweets and candies. My favourite character is a girl who has hair made of candy. I recommend it.Mechi Cepeda

Killer Klowns I watched “Killer Klowns” it’s a horror movie. This story happened in a town of the United States. It’s attacked by aliens shaped like clowns. The clowns are aliens who eat people and drink blood. There is a spaceship where there is a room where the bodies of people are put. Mike is the man who found the aliens and the ship and he told that to the police offi cers but they didn’t believe him. In a moment, Dave, one of the police offi cers believed Mike. The clowns have an unbreakable balloon where they put Mike’s girlfriend. Mike Dave and two guys follow the clowns. Manny is another police offi cer, he is a man who hates teens, that’s why he didn’t believe Mike. But a clown went to the police station and killed him. The clowns went with the balloon to the amusement park. They wanted to enter the circus but the guard didn’t let them in. Then the clowns disintegrated the guards with special cakes. They were waiting for Jojo. Jojo is an alien who is the king of the Clamms. The Jojo came, Dane clicked his nose with a police badge. This is a fi lm in which strange things happen.Luciano La Rocca
