USES
The zero conditional is a structure used
for talking about general truths —
things which always happen under
certain conditions
If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.
The zero conditional is used to talk
about things which are always true —
such as scientific facts and general
truths:
Wood doesn't burn if there is no air.
This is a scientific fact — wood needs air
in order to burn. No air = no fire.

A. READ. Read the text Density: sink and float for solids
Adapted from http://www.middleschoolchemistry.com/lessonplans/chapter3/lesson4
Density: Sink and Float for Solids
Key Concepts The density of an object determines whether it will float or sink in another
substance. An object will float if it is less dense than the liquid it is placed in. An object will sink if it is denser than the liquid it is placed in.
Summary Students will investigate a wax candle and a piece of clay to understand why the candle floats and the clay sinks even though the candle is heavier than the piece of clay. Students will discover that it is not the weight of the object, but its density compared to the density of water, that determines whether an object will sink or float in water.
Objective Students will be able to determine whether an object will sink or float by comparing its density to the density of water.
Materials 1 tea light candles in their metal containers Clay Water in cup
Explain
Water is made up of small molecules of oxygen and hydrogen. Water molecules are closely packed together.
Wax is made of carbon and hydrogen atoms connected together in long chains. Explain on the molecular level why wax is less dense than water.
Clay is made of oxygen and heavier atoms such as silicon and aluminum.

A BASIC COLOR WHEAL
This is the basic Color Wheel. The Primary Colors-
the colors that are used to mix the other colors and
cannot be made from any other color- are Yellow,
Red and Blue.
The Secondary Colors are Orange, Green and
Purple. The colors are mixed as follows:
Yellow + Red = Orange
Red + Blue = Purple
Blue + Yellow = Green
An easy way to remember the above is that the
Secondary Color is in between the two Primary
Colors that create it.
It is generally understood that all of the colors mixed
together make brown, though the type of brown
depends on the ratios of the colors being mixed.
Brown can also be created by mixing Complementary Colors. Complementary Colors are
those opposite each other on the Color Wheel.
Yellow + Purple = Brown
Green + Red = Brown
Blue + Orange = Brown

through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia,
Montenegro, Greece and Turkey for
the next two weeks. I won’t have
much (cheap/free) internet access

able to update the blog while I’m gone
and I will be even further behind on
replying to e-mails. (Sorry!) I will be
back with lots of photos.

A. READ. Read the text
There will be consequences
Chad is going to take a vacation, his options being New Zealand or Mexico. He can´t decide which destination is more exciting. As you read some information about New Zealand, think about a comparable description of Mexico.
If you go to New Zealand in search of natural beauty, you will love its fourteen spectacular national parks, which occupy 30% of its territory – more than five million hectares on the three islands!
If you like sports, the All Blacks rugby team will impress you. They are the most successful international rugby team in history. The team does a traditional Maori «haka» war dance before each competition.
If you are interested in indigenous people, you’re going to find the Maori fascinating. They came to New Zealand from tropical Polynesia around 850 A. D. The Maori language has no native writing system; when missionaries arrived in 1814, they found that no one there wrote. The Maoris believe in many gods that represent the forces of nature. The culture is rich in songs, art, and dance.

A. READ. Read the text
Adapted from Richards, Jack. Interchange Level 2. New York, Cambridge University Press, 2001 (Pp. 59 student’s Book)
Are you in love?
What is the difference between “having a crush” on
someone and falling in love?
You think you’re falling in love. You’re really attracted to a
certain person. But this has happened before, and it was just a “crush”. How can you
tell if it’s real this time? Here’s what our readers said:
If you’re falling in love…
You’ll find yourself talking to or telephoning the person for no reason. (You might
pretend there’s a reason, but often there’s not.)
You’ll find yourself bringing this person into every conversation. (“when I was in
México - ,” a friend begins. You interrupt with, “My boyfriend made a great Mexican
dinner last week”.)
You might suddenly be interested in things you used to avoid. (“When a woman asks
me to tell her all about football, I know she’s fallen in love,” said a TV sports
announcer.)
OK, so you’ve fallen in love. But falling in love is one thing, and staying in love is
another. How can tell, as time passes, that you’re still in love? If you stay in love,
your relationship will change. You might not talk as much about the person you are in
love with. You might not call him or her so often. But this person will nevertheless
become more and more important in your life.
You’ll find that you can be yourself with this person. When you first fell in love, you
were probably afraid to admit certain things about yourself. But now you can be
totally honest. You can trust him or her to accept you just as you are. Falling in love
is great-staying in love is even better!

GRAMMAR
Used to
We use 'used to' for something that happened regularly in the past but no longer happens. "Used to" expresses the idea that something was an old habit that stopped in the past. It indicates that something was often repeated in the past, but it is not usually done now.
Examples:
William used to watch TV all the time but now, he reads more.
Laura used to travel a lot in her job but now, since her promotion, she doesn't.
We use “used to” to talk
about past habits or to
describe actions that you
did repeatedly in the
past.

The way we were
Molly Hornby was a young girl in the 1960s. Read what she says about it.
“I was a young girl in the 1960s. My friends and I used to do a lot of things which shocked our parents. We used to do things our mothers never did. We cut our hair, we wore short skirts, we smoked, and went dancing. We danced to the music of Elvis Presley and the Beatles. We also got the chance to see the Beatles live at a concert once. It was amazing. My father went fishing once a week. He always wished that I would accompany him, but fishing was not my cup of tea. Instead my friends and I went for picnics in the surrounding area quite often. My boyfriend had a car, a 1960 Ford Falcon, so he always picked us up and we often drove to Brighton. We went to the pictures twice a week and I loved to watch films with Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor, especially the ‘Reflections in a Golden Eye’ starring both of them. I still love to watch this film. It’s my favourite. I can remember it all so clearly.”

A. READ. Read the text and comment with your classmates what happened with all the
passengers?
Disaster Strikes Aboard Titanic
That encounter took place roughly four days out, at about 11:30 p.m. on April 14. Titanic was equipped with a Marconi wireless, and there had been sporadic reports of ice from other ships, but she was sailing on calm seas under a moonless, clear sky. A lookout saw the iceberg dead ahead coming out of a slight haze, rang the warning bell and telephoned the bridge. The engines were quickly reversed and the ship was turned sharply, and instead of making direct impact the berg seemed to graze along the side of
the ship, sprinkling ice fragments on the forward deck. Sensing no collision, the lookouts were relieved. They had no idea that the iceberg’s jagged underwater spur had slashed a 300-foot gash well below the ship’s waterline, and that Titanic was doomed. By the time the captain toured the damaged area with Harland and Wolff’s Thomas Andrews, five compartments were already filling with seawater, and the bow of the ship was alarmingly down. Andrews did a quick calculation and estimated that Titanic might remain afloat for an hour and a half, perhaps slightly more. At that point the captain, who had already instructed his wireless operator to call for help, ordered the lifeboats to be loaded.
Titanic, nearly perpendicular and with many of her lights still aglow, finally dove beneath the icy surface at approximately 2:20 a.m. on April 15. Throughout the morning, Cunard’s Carpathia, after receiving Titanic’s distress call at midnight and steaming at full speed while dodging ice floes all night, rounded up all of the lifeboats. They contained only 705 survivors.

EXAMPLE
Lady Diana
In May, Charles and Diana traveled to Japan for six-day
tour. There was much excitement in Japan, where more
people than in Britain had watched the royal wedding.
The dress Diana wore on arrival was printed with the
symbol of the rising sun. It was a very heavy schedule,
with twenty-nine engagements, and they were often
working for twelve hours a day.
In Kyoto, after watching a traditional tea ceremony, Diana
was presented with a kimono. The Japanese dressmakers
had overestimated her height and she nearly tripped while
parading in front of her amused hosts.

Telling about past experiences
Last July, one day when I was having dinner, a telegram arrived. It was from Pat, my best friend, who lives in Delicias. We used to go to the same school. She told me she was flying to Mexico City the next day.
So I went to the airport to pick her up.
When she arrived, she told me the purpose of her visit: she wanted to visit an exhibit at the Palace of Fine Arts. But this was an unusual event and she invited me to visit it with her.
Next morning, after we had breakfast we went to the painting exhibit and I understood. It was a fantastic experience. There were big, beautiful and colorful murals.
And the artist were not professional painters with years of study and practice, they were young Mexican children from different regions of the country. Through their paintings they tell local stories and legends in a very impressive way, full of love and ingenuity.
That day, I was very happy and proud to be a part of this wonderful country of ours.

My Scariest Experience
Rachel: Have I ever told you about the time I got hit by a car?
Andy: No. What happened?
Rachel: I was a university student and I was working part-time at the bookstore. I was walking to an early morning meeting, and it was still dark, and I was late, so I took a shortcut. Before I stepped onto the street, I looked both ways, and there wasn’t a car coming, but when I was about halfway across, suddenly a car came speeding around the corner.
Andy: You’re kidding! Didn’t the driver see you?
Rachel: I guess not. The car hit one of my legs and knocked me down really hard. Then I fell back and hit my head on the street.
Andy: Really? That’s terrible.
Rachel: Yeah. At first I couldn’t breathe, and that really frightened me. After a minute, though, I was able to stand up and walk over to the sidewalk. My leg and ankle and tailbone hurt, and my head was bleeding.
Andy: Did the driver stop to help you?
Rachel: No, someone called the University Police, but they didn’t come until after I left. Another student was driving by and offered to take me to the health center, so we didn’t call an ambulance.
Andy: Well, that was nice of him. I cannot believe the other driver left you. What did he doctor say?
Rachel: Well, he told me I had a broken ankle, and that I had to eleven stitches in my back of my head.

Example: I ran into my teacher at the movies last night. RUN + INTO = MEET He ran away when he was 15. RUN + AWAY = LEAVE HOME
2. Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object.
Example: He suddenly showed up. "SHOW UP" CANNOT TAKE AN OBJECT
3. Some phrasal verbs are transitive. A transitive verb can be followed by an object.
Example: I made up the story. "STORY" IS THE OBJECT OF "MAKE UP"
4. Some transitive phrasal verbs can take an object in both places. In this Phrasal Verb Dictionary, such phrasal verbs are marked with both * and +

GRAMMAR
When do we use modals?
Modal verbs are special verbs which behave differently from normal verbs.
They are different for three reasons:
First, they do not use ''s'' in the third person (e.g. He can drive. She could study English.)
Second, they use ''not'' to make modal verbs negative (e.g. They may not be here tomorrow.)
Third, they do not use modals in the past tenses or the future tenses (e.g. We will can play volley ball)
Definitions:
Can – ability, permission, possibility, request
Could – ability, permission, possibility, request, suggestion
May – permission, probability, request
Examples:
Can I go to the bathroom? (asking for permission)
When we want to talk about someone's ability (or inability) to do something. Example: "We can find your house without the map." "She can't have a new house in this moment.
162
May I go to the bathroom? (more politely asking for permission)
Could I go to the bathroom? (asking for permission with less certainty)
Modal Concept Example
May Permission May I come in?
Probability She may go to Cancun
next summer
Could Probability That could be him.
Past ability I could play the piano
when I was 8
Can Permission Students can bring
tennis shoes on Fridays
Ability They can speak
